REINVENTION OF THE

SCA CAMPUS During the past two decades SCA leadership and family has turned an abandoned pie factory into a bustling community art center. The pie freezer became a 410-seat theater. Coolers morphed into a gallery, conference room, art studio, and 55-seat performance space. The shipping dock transformed into a lobby and deck. The production line became a pavilion and garden. As we continued to grow, our programming expanded to fill those spaces. In summer 2020, we were pushed outside to a part of the SCA Campus that, until recently, had a singular use: the parking lot. We quickly realized that this large outdoor space is hyper flexible and can be used for a multiplicity of purposes including concerts, films, art, farmers markets, children’s classes, special events -and sometimes parking too. The new Plaza is the final piece of the SCA puzzle. With the completion of this renovation (or reinvention), the SCA has transformed every inch of the old pie factory. Lot line to lot line -- it is now a community art center serving folks of all ages from all walks of life. Our Plaza renovation project was made possible through the generous support of these SCA family members, including a special lead gift from the estate of Bill Galligan, a longtime Saugatuck resident who had a deep love for the community, for arts & culture, and for the SCA. Bill spent five seasons as the Farmers Market Manager at the SCA, spending countless hours in the parking lot -- in the rain, under the sun, during warm days and cool ones -coordinating Market vendors and guests. WE QUICKLY REALIZED THAT THIS LARGE OUTDOOR SPACE IS HYPER FLEXIBLE AND CAN BE USED FOR A MULTIPLICITY OF PURPOSES INCLUDING CONCERTS, THEATRE, FILMS, ART, FARMERS MARKETS, CHILDREN’S CLASSES, SPECIAL EVENTS -- AND SOMETIMES PARKING.

SCA [NOW] BRINGING ART INTO THE CLASSROOM

The SCA has long been a curator of multidisciplinary educational programming for K-12th graders. Through the eyeopening pandemic experience, we realized that these programs no longer have to be tethered to West Michigan (hosted at the SCA or at schools). We challenged ourselves to reshape, reformat, and humanize the virtual educational experience … enter SCA [NOW] Classroom Conversations, the merger of connection and creativity. SCA [NOW] is a connectivity hub for highly-interactive, interdisciplinary learning that promotes positive socialemotional impact through a deep dive in creativity; exposing students to a wide range of professional creatives and hands-on experiences. Each episode of SCA [NOW] includes videos and accompanying program materials that creatively meet students’ needs as well as those of the teachers who share them with their classes. During our old “in-person” model the SCA served approximately 5,000 students per year. This new DIGITAL model allows us to break the location-based restraints and substantially grow our outreach. Allowing students near and far to meet professional working artists, designers, actors, musicians, chefs, dancers, and more -- real world role models who will inspire them to take action to make the world a better place!

Hey hookers, I’m Dixie Longate, America’s Favorite Tupperware lady. I’m from Mobile, Alabama, born and raised. What can I say, I’m a southern girl through and through. I started selling the fantastic plastic crap in 2001 and I have never had so much fun drinking for free in my life. Within a year, I was one of the top sellers in the nation because, well, me and some plastic bowls, and a bunch of drunk women somehow equals lots of sales. - Dixie

WEDDINGS

THERE’S LOVE IN THE AIR LET’S TALK RENTALS WITH TERESA PALAZZOLO ZERFAS AND RECENTLY MARRIED COUPLE REBECCA AND RYAN ADOMAITIS

The SCA is proud to be more than just an arts center -- here, memories are made and magic happens. Couple name: Rebecca and Ryan Adomaitis Wedding Date: September 28, 2019

LEARN MORE

Tell us about your wedding at the SCA: We had an excellent experience working with Teresa. She was so helpful in answering the many questions an anxious bride has and worked with us to make our day just what we had envisioned. What was the most valuable part about hosting your wedding at the SCA: We loved the SCA as it provided outdoor and indoor accommodations. We wanted an outdoor wedding but loved the safety net of the indoor option in case of inclement weather. The architecture, gardens, and gallery makes for a venue full of interest for our guests, instead of one large room, we had multiple areas to enjoy and people could pick the space that felt most comfortable when the evening cooled off. What about Saugatuck/Douglas made your wedding extra special? Saugatuck is special to us as it was the site of our second date - and many more to follow. We love to explore the dunes and lakeshore with our pup Remy. We also rented a local Air BnB and had a great time celebrating downtown with friends after the wedding was over.

Meet Teresa: Teresa has been the SCA’s Rental Coordinator since 2010. Contact her at teresa@sc4a.org

FRESH LEARN MORE TUESDAY 10AM - 2PM FRIDAY 9AM - 3PM Fresh Local Food: A young woman fills her bag at the 2020 Market at SCA.

Tell us about why Green Koi chose to support the Saugatuck Center for the Arts: One of our missions at Green Koi is to support other local businesses. On top of the SCA being a great organization, the arts have always been very important to my business partner and me. From a young age, I always felt drawn to utilize art to express myself. Another significant factor has been the welcoming environment I always feel at the SCA. As a gay man, I have always deeply appreciated having a safe space to be freely oneself. Green Koi is an artistic expression in itself, we created something out of what was an eyesore in the community, now it’s something to be proud of. The SCA gives that same thing to the community. We both are giving an opportunity to the people in this community to experience something that they may not have had access to otherwise.

The Market at Saugatuck Center for the Arts hosts an array of vendors - from local farmers with home-grown produce, to hand-crafted gifts, to fresh-cut flowers. We had the opportunity to catch up with David Setzke, the owner of Green Koi - and the premier sponsor of the SCA Markets, to chat about why he loves the Markets at the SCA.

What makes the SCA Markets different from other markets that you have attended? Throughout the last two years, I have visited the Market at different points in the pandemic. In these times where things were dark and confusing, the SCA provided a comfortable safe space that could almost seem “normal”. The ability to pivot and navigate through different restrictions while still bringing joy to the community sets them apart. What is your favorite find at the SCA Markets so far? Isabel’s Pizza. It’s the best wood fire oven pizza I have ever had in my life. I went to the Market all the time, just for that pizza.

031

CON’T

FRESH Fall Blueberries: Whatever the season, the vendors at The Market at SCA bring the freshest goods and the most beautiful spreads.

IN THESE TIMES WHEN THINGS WERE DARK AND CONFUSING, THE SCA PROVIDED A COMFORTABLE SAFE SPACE THAT COULD ALMOST SEEM “NORMAL”. THE ABILITY TO PIVOT AND NAVIGATE THROUGH DIFFERENT RESTRICTIONS WHILE STILL BRINGING JOY TO THE COMMUNITY SETS THEM APART. I also have a soft spot for fresh flower bouquets. I used to be a part owner in a flower shop business, and I know how much hard work and dedication someone put into growing those flowers, selecting those specific ones for the bouquet, and arranging it all. Tell us about how your business relates to the artisans and farmers at the Markets: We’re growing a crop that takes a lot of care and nurturing to bring to flower, pass stringent testing requirements, and then it goes through a rigorous and creative process to become a final product and make it to our shelves. A lot of love goes into this - the growers and artisans that are behind these products are a rare breed of passionate individuals. Green Koi is the premiere provisioning center catering to the West Shore community. The Koi fish is sacred in Japanese culture. It represents the magical, the eternal. Our intention is to create a rare experience, one of transformation, and of heartfelt joy. From the moment one enters the store to interactions with the care team, to taking the product home, guests will raise their expectations of what a provision center can and should be.

COME SEE WHAT ALL THE FUSS IS ABOUT DURING AN EVENING OF SONGS, STORIES, SEXINESS, AND SASS BY THE DIVA HERSELF. “Statuesque singer Meghan Murphy, who has hair the color of merlot and a big voice that can be brassy, soulful, or plaintive as the occasion merits... The results are funny and heartwarming without getting cynical or schmaltzy, owing to Murphy’s considerable charisma, jolly shamelessness, and, at times, vulnerability. Highly recommended.” -Chicago Reader

34 SAUGATUCK CENTER FOR THE ARTS

“Meghan (Big Red) is the most versatile and organic vocalist in Chicago. There’s not a genre she can’t sing and make it sound as if the song wasn’t written expressly for her. So many singers can be put into categories, “pop singer,” “cabaret singer,” “rock singer,” but Meghan covers every genre her vocal chords take on and does it seamlessly.” -Windy City Times

GYA

“GROWING YOUNG ARTISTS” (GYA) CELEBRATES THE COMPLETE STUDENT, GIVING THEM SPACE, TIME AND RESOURCES TO SELF-REFLECT AND EMPOWERING THEM TO CREATE WITH VOICE AND AGENCY.

Maybe you’ve taken in a musical at the Saugatuck Center for the Arts. Maybe you’ve perused an exhibit in the gallery, strolled through the garden on a summer afternoon or enjoyed a virtual performance in the past year. Would it surprise you then to learn that you’ve only just scratched the surface when it comes to the SCA’s mission and impact within the local community? Coequal with their drive to entertain and engage the people of Saugatuck-Douglas and surrounding communities, is their commitment to providing unfettered access to the arts for all and transforming lives in our region. Nowhere is that commitment more evident than in the Growing Young Artists (GYA) program. For the last 10 years, GYA has been a project-based, summer school curriculum initiative serving K-8 and migrant children in Fennville Public Schools find their voices and realize their potential.

access to the arts for all and transforming lives in our region: A member of the SCA Joy Squad explains a lesson to a group of GYA students in Fennville Middle School.

38 SAUGATUCK CENTER FOR THE ARTS

“The SCA has impacted hundreds of students’ lives through multiple weeks of well-planned, high-quality hands-on, art-focused lessons designed to address inequities in learning,” says SCA Education & Exhibitions Manager Whitney Valentine. “Through [GYA], we strive to celebrate students’ natural assets.”

EMPOWER +CREATE

Further than scholastics: Whitney Valentine, the SCA’s Education and Exhibitions Manager, has led the GYA program for the past 8 years.

Taught by a variety of young professionals recruited by the SCA who work alongside school staff, other community organizations and a visiting artist-in-residence, GYA uses the arts and the natural world as a conduit to teach the entire spectrum of core competencies.

But the program goes further than scholastics, providing students a more nuanced, yet equally as critical set of skills. Social-Emotional Learning (SEL) encourages the formation of healthy identities, management of emotions, feeling and expressing empathy, creating supportive relationships, and making responsible, caring decisions. GYA celebrates the complete student, giving them space, time and resources to self-reflect and empowering them to create with voice and agency. This is a key component of the SCA’s driving mission to shift the paradigm of education and focus on individualized, comprehensive teaching approaches that aim to close achievement and opportunity gaps through constructive and lasting personal development.

THIS IS A KEY COMPONENT OF THE SCA’S DRIVING MISSION TO SHIFT THE

“If it was up to me, I’d spend far more time focusing on SEL and mental health in the classrooms,” says Valentine. “It’s an equity issue. Our Growing Young Artists lessons emphasize communication skills, self-awareness, relationship-building and ways to express emotions. I am unapologetic about this. Students need to feel seen, recognized, heard and supported right now. They need to feel love. Our program allows each student to have the spotlight and uses art to process big ideas and big feelings. By centering learning around art-making we can encourage individualization while also celebrating the community as a whole.”

PARADIGM OF EDUCATION AND FOCUS ON INDIVIDUALIZED, COMPREHENSIVE TEACHING APPROACHES.

39

Supplementing the traditional teachers and instructors each summer is the Growing Young Artists’ artist-in-residence, a bilingual creator who works to instill in the students the value of sharing their stories and voices. 2021 will see Chicago muralist and musician Sandra Antongiorgi working with students to create a mural in downtown Fennville reflective of their personal journeys. “This summer, we are focusing on the theme of community; after all it is what we all innately seek, long for, and desire,” notes Valentine. “We are all a part of many communities: families, friends, culture, classmates, colleagues. We know that can be in overlapping communities and some different communities. But sometimes we don’t feel like we belong.” The culmination of the program is a community fiesta with food, drinks, music, and a vibrant public display of the students’ art projects. While 2020 was an obviously muted affair, Valentine and others hope that with proper protocols in place, 2021’s celebration will be a festive return closer to normalcy. Growing Young Artists’ impact is tangible, says Valentine. “Each summer there are countless stories of transformation, some quiet and others unmistakably loud. I think the mere fact that we have a record of increased attendance, students wanting to be at school, being excited to come back speaks volumes.

We’ve seen students, specifically from migrant families, who take such care and pride in their work, their sketchbooks, and projects that they travel with them.” The overwhelming success of Growing Young Artists has seen it go from a once-a-week arts enrichment program supplementing Fennville’s Migrant program to supplanting the summer school model. And that is something that the SCA would like to expand into other schools and districts. For the first time, in 2021, the SCA will broaden its reach, taking the GYA program to the Paw Paw School District. “We’ve found something that works, that’s very affordable and implementable,” says SCA Executive Director Kristin Armstrong. “It is different, and you’ve got to believe that art is an excellent delivery model, but if you can get your head around that and if you can be innovative and flexible, we know it works. If you’re a school that’s already doing project-based learning or you’re really committed to social-emotional learning, this makes sense to you because you realize that the old models where you’re teaching to the test don’t address those things.”

LEARN MORE

There is a recognized need, not just in West Michigan, but across the nation, for holistic educational models that offer all students, regardless of their background, equal opportunities. And summer after summer, GYA is proving just how integral the arts are to creating kind, creative, engaged and confident students. The true legacy of GYA is its potential to impact change well beyond classroom walls. “My hope for our program is that students who participate in it truly feel like they belong, that they are accepted, listened to, and supported,” says Valentine. “When we plant seeds of support early on and give students agency in their choices and words, it can completely shift their futures; their own, their families’, and their communities’. I believe small change occurs in small classrooms, in small communities and can create BIG impact.”
