Anna Althea Hills Winter Sunshine in Laguna Canyon, 8” x 10,” framed oil on board Overview: Anna Althea Hills was born in Ohio, raised in Michigan, and attended Olivet College. She studied at the Art Institute of Chicago and Cooper Union in New York City, where she studied under Arthur Dow. She later furthered her studies at the Académie Julian in Paris. She travelled throughout Europe for four years prior to settling in Laguna Beach, CA in 1912. After arriving in California her palette became much lighter and brighter, reflecting the sun-filled landscape of her surroundings. She was an early member of the Laguna Beach Art Association, and served as president for six years, while raising funds for the creation of the Laguna Beach Art Museum. She won medals at the San Diego PanamaCalifornia Exposition, 1915; California State Fair, 1919; and the Laguna Beach Art Association, 1922, and 1923.
