Quilting - This is NOT Your Grandmother’s Flower Garden

The hexagon, a six sided figure often called a one-patch in the quilt world, has been a part of popular designs for over 200 years. In the early 19th century it was used in what was called a mosaic quilt. In the 1930’s, we became familiar with it in “Grandmother’s Flower Garden” quilts. Today this little hexagon is knows as a “hexie”. In this class we will explore the hexagon, learning to use it in English Paper Piecing, which is trending now as a hand piecing method. We will work with the basic hexagon designs, and will add some of the new, “fussy cut” patterns. However, we will also learn to machine piece the hexagon, using a couple of different methods, in a few different sizes. Enjoy learning to make any number of designs with these techniques. The finished piece may be anything from a candle mat/ table runner to a pillow, or even a quilt. There will be time in class to do some relaxing hand piecing, with machine piecing accomplished at home using the instructions provided in class. We will discuss materials needed in the first class. Access Linda’s website at www.huntersstars.com for photos of previous class projects and other quilt information. Limit 18. (STI-001) Tuesdays, (8 weeks) Begins 3/14 12:30-2:30 PM Fee: $58 SC: $49 NO CLASS 4/11 & 4/25 Room 278 (Binner Educational Center) Instructor: Linda Hunter Linda Hunter has taught quilting for over 35 years, conducts lectures and workshops and is a quilt appraiser certified by the American Quilter’s Society.

PLANETARIUM From Earth to the Universe (Grade 3-Adult) The night sky, both beautiful and mysterious,

has been the subject of campfire stories, ancient myths and awe for as long as there have been people. A desire to comprehend the Universe may well be humanity’s oldest shared intellectual experience. Yet only recently have we truly begun to grasp our place in the vast cosmos. To learn about this journey of celestial discovery, from the theories of the ancient Greek astronomers to today’s grandest telescopes, we invite you to experience From Earth to the Universe. Directed by the young Greek film-maker Theofanis N. Matsopoulos, and featuring a sweeping soundtrack from Norwegian composer Johan B. Monell, viewers can revel in the splendor of the various worlds in the Solar System and the ferocity of the scorching Sun. From Earth to the Universe then leaves our home to take the audience out to the colorful birthplaces and burial grounds of stars, and still further out, beyond the Milky Way, to the unimaginable immensity of a myriad of galaxies. Along the way, the audience will learn about the history of astronomy, the invention of the telescope, and today’s giant telescopes that allow us to continue to probe ever deeper in the Universe. During your visit, as always, you’ll earn the brilliant winter stars, planets and constellations you’ll see on cold winter nights. (SPE-090) Tuesdays, (2 weeks) Begins 2/7 7:00-9:00 PM Fee: $19; Maryvale Student Fee: $10 Planetarium-across from Room 142 (Middle School) Instructor: Paul Krupinski Maryvale Graduate; Director/Owner, Mr. K.’s Mobile Dome Planetarium; Show Presenter/Technician, Strasenburgh Planetarium; Planetarium Director/Astronomer, Challenger Learning Center of Lockport.

Observing Einstein’s Outrageous Universe: Hearing the Universe with Gravitational Waves (Grade 3-Adult)

A century ago, Einstein put forth his theory of gravity. For the first 50 years it was an exotic theory with many untestable predictions thought to be irrelevant to our Universe. Beginning 50 years ago with the discovery of quasars and the cosmic microwave background (CMB), it has become clear that we live in Einstein’s Universe where the extraordinary is now the ordinary and his theory is in full bloom. Join us at the Maryvale Planetarium for a two-week short course about Einstein’s outrageous universe. This unique class is based upon a three-day short course attended by the instructor at the Kavli Institute for Cosmological Physics (KICP) at the University of Chicago on September 19-21, 2016. Learn about gravitational waves, first predicted by Einstein in 1916. Listen to the collision of two black holes, which collided on September 14, 2015, confirming Einstein’s predication of gravitational waves 100 years ago. Learn how LIGO, the Laser Interferometer Gravitational wave Observatory, which was recently turned on and within days “heard” two black holes merging, opened a new window for studying astronomy. During your planetarium experience you’ll meet Orion, Sirius, Betelgeuse and Rigel, as well as other brilliant constellations and current planets visible in the skies of Western New York. (SPE-089) Tuesdays, (2 weeks) Begins 1/10 7:00-9:00 PM Fee: $19; Maryvale Student Fee: $10 Planetarium-across from Room 142 (Middle School) Instructor: Paul Krupinski Maryvale Graduate; Director/Owner, Mr. K.’s Mobile Dome Planetarium; Show Presenter/Technician, Strasenburgh Planetarium; Planetarium Director/Astronomer, Challenger Learning Center of Lockport.
