About the Process Draft 1: This first version spells out the title of the book, Gross, in Lego. The toys are an important motif in this story, so it was a natural choice to start with. Unfortunately with the use of a photograph it read too much like a biography or memoir. Draft 2: The second version captured the disjointed nature of the protagonists’ relationship, while introducing a sense of humour to the story. In the end, it was decided that the drawing combined with the typeface looked too juvenile for the subject matter. Draft 3: Drawing on the hand-stamped Lego pattern of the previous draft, the final version has a more adult feel to it. It hints at the darker elements of the story without losing the previous design’s quirkiness. The 144 dots represent the 144 objects found in the protagonist’s stomach during his autopsy.
