INTRODUCTION

If you had told me 12 months ago that SBC would be hosting the biggest sports betting trade event in the US this week, I doubt that would have been very believable. While we successfully run very big and successful sports betting conferences in Europe, the regulations in the US were not conducive for that model to work on this side of the Atlantic.

How things change. And how quickly things change. The ruling of PASPA as unconstitutional acted as a starter pistol for many states to implement (or activate existing) sports betting regulations and those states have been making the running and the headlines ever since.

But other states are now following up and exploring the possibilities around sports betting and the diverse range of models that are available to try out, depending on its current gambling infrastructure. There certainly is no one-size fits all solution here, but there should certainly be a willingness to learn from the experience of others.

Our goal has always been to give the sports betting industry an event it could call its own, where operators can come to find out about some of the latest trends, find out about the latest products and catch up with friends in the industry. We hope you feel at home.

Good to see you. As you will you be aware, there is a lot to take in at an SBC event and Betting on Sports America is no different.

The intention is that no matter which element of the business you are involved in, there will always be something happening on the agenda that will be of interest to you. Welcome to the inaugural Betting on Sports America event. Sports Betting Community (SBC) has been producing events for the sports betting industry since 2009. SBC organizes the largest trade shows and conferences dedicated to sports betting and also has an array of publications which focus on the industry.

I’m very pleased to be working with SBC as their new Community Director and we’re very happy to see you here. Frankly, having started as an event organizer and publisher for the iGaming industry in 1995, I never thought we’d see the day when sports betting was legal in the US. But, in 2011 when the New Jersey voters passed a referendum to legalize sports betting, the pendulum began to swing. With a seven-year legal challenge and what was to become a change of heart by many of the professional sports leagues, things looked like there may be a shift. With the 2018 Supreme Court ruling, progress can now be made.

SBC has brought you an amazing array of speakers, exhibitors and sponsors in this launch. You’ll also experience great networking events including the first time Hall of Fame Awards for some very deserving individuals. We’re just getting started so we hope you’ll find that the quality of this event speaks volumes for what you’ll see in the future.

This is your event so your feedback to guide future efforts is critical. Let us know what you like, what you don’t like, what you want to see that’s not here this time around. Seek out an SBC staff person if you need help.

The opportunities offered by sports betting are not just being experienced in the gambling industry, there are also major opportunities (and threats) for the world of sporting entertainment. Given the slightly fractious relationship between some leagues and the gambling operators both before and since the repeal of PASPA, there is still some bridge building to be done to get everyone pushing in the same direction.

However, our experiences in Europe show that sports and sports betting can be complementary in so many ways: from sponsorship, data fees and media rights, through to fan engagement and integrity monitoring.

It may feel like we have a long way to go, but just look at how far we have already come in less than 12 months.
