LOCATIONS AND HOURS OF OPERATION
We are excited to announce that SBA is the first dermatology office in Houston to offer Cellfina™, the new breakthrough technology for cellulite. This FDA-cleared, minimally invasive treatment shows great improvement on depressed dimples on the buttocks and thighs with results lasting at least 2 years and a 96% patient satisfaction rating at that 2-year point!
Welcome to The Skinny – our magazine devoted to giving you all the inside information to keep your skin healthy and beautiful. Open House is just around the corner. Our 18th Anniversary Open House will be on September 26 at our Katy office, and we can’t wait for this year’s event! Over the almost 19 years our practice has been open, I can only remember a couple where we were introducing so many new technologies in the same year. 2015 is one for the record books, we’ve introduced: Cellfina™, Kybella™, M22 Q-Switched Nd:YAG laser, Restylane® Silk, UltraShape®, and MDRejuvena™, our newest product line. You’ll find articles on all of these new offerings in this Skinny issue.
You may think you are alone, but in reality cellulite affects 85% of women over the age of 21. Cellulite is more common in women with a family history and certain ethnicities. It typically occurs with increasing age and increased fatty tissue. These predisposing factors are impossible to change, so there is no way to prevent cellulite. Cellulite can occur if you are below, at, or above your ideal weight. Areas of skin affected by cellulite have thick collagen bands oriented vertically to the skin called septae. Septae pull down on the skin surface which makes the skin and underlying fatty tissue appear dimpled.
Our Katy practice will celebrate its 2nd anniversary in mid-October, and our second hometown is booming! We so appreciate the warm reception our practice – medical, cosmetic and research – has received. With the growing demand for our dermatological services, we were thrilled to welcome a new doctor, Kenne Ogunmakin, M.D., to our Katy team in August. Meet this Texas native below. Our digital presence has grown too! Now we have the SBA Online Store, and our website is mobile-compatible, making your on-the-go interactions with us easier and more convenient. Now when you order products online, you can feel at ease knowing that you are receiving genuine Revision®, MDRejuvena™, SkinCeuticals®, SkinMedica®, and other popular items directly from our store. You not only earn Brilliant Distinctions® points on SkinMedica products but also rack up loyalty points from our online store which can be used toward discounts on future online purchases. Our online store has been well received since its soft launch earlier this summer. We already have many customers, and we look forward to serving even more of you through this new channel. When it comes to new, don’t think we’ve forgotten about our first home in the Galleria area. After 15 years, our St. James Place office is getting some rejuvenation of its own. Plans are complete, and construction will begin soon to update our look. We’re adding more treatment rooms, revamping our product displays and creating patient product consult rooms for those wanting advice on skin care.

GALLERIA/HOUSTON: 1900 St. James Place, 6th Floor Houston, Texas 77056 Ph. 713.850.0240 Hours of Operation: Monday – Friday: 8AM – 5PM Saturday: 8AM – 2PM
Meet Dr. Ogunmakin New to the office, but not to Houston, I am happy to be back home and to start practicing at SBA! I am Nigerian-American, born in England, but I was raised 100% Texan. I completed all my studies locally, starting with undergraduate at Rice University and then finishing Magna Cum Laude at the University of Texas Medical Branch. Even my residency was completed in state at Texas Tech University, where I served as chief resident. Medicine is my passion; it’s a field with never-ending advances where you never stop learning. There is continuous research and development of new techniques, procedures, and treatments. Dermatology in particular gives me the opportunity to perform surgery and cosmetic and medical procedures while researching breakthrough therapies! Suzanne Bruce and Associates turned out to be a fantastic fit for me. Not only does SBA allow me to stay where my heart is, but also gives me the freedom to pursue all the areas of dermatology that I love. I get to put on my investigative hat for my medical patients and research studies while gaining access to the newest and hottest technologies and techniques cosmetically. I am very excited to meet all of my new patients in the Katy area. I look forward to taking the time to get to know my patients and develop a diagnosis and treatment plan for their skin, hair and nail concerns. I don’t believe in taking life for granted and can’t wait to immerse myself into the Katy community!
Swelling and bruising are expected after Cellfina. We advise our patients to wear a compression garment for the next 2 weeks to help reduce swelling, while bruising can take 2-3 weeks to fully subside. Our patients resume a light exercise regimen within a week. Results can be seen within a month but continue to improve over time.

at Suzanne Bruce and Associates Our lives are busy, and making time to work out and be healthy isn’t always easy. You might make just enough time to get your cardio in, but sculpting your body through aerobic or weight exercises can require a huge time commitment. Often times, it doesn’t even matter how many exercises you can squeeze in. Your fat cells remain stubbornly loyal to you, much to your dismay.

The day of your procedure, your physician will mark the cellulite dimples. After a local numbing agent is used, the Cellfina device is applied to the skin over the dimple, and using suction, the dimple is pulled into the device. A specialized hand piece releases the dimple, and the procedure continues until all dimples have been released.

NEW at The Body Shop: UltraShape®!
by April Harrison, MPAS, PA-C
by Maria Martinez, Aesthetician
Recent research into how our faces age has helped cosmetic dermatologists in conjunction with medical device manufacturers improve the equipment and techniques to treat facial aging and laxity and restore a younger look to our patients. Today we use treatments that are less invasive than the knife to improve our appearance as we age. Many of our patients prefer a nonsurgical option because they don’t have time for the downtime, they want a more natural look and/or they are concerned about the potential side effects of general anesthesia.
As a practice, we have been contouring the body and reducing stubborn fat for 10 years. Over the many years that I have been working at SBA, we have seen a surge in new and increasingly effective technologies to contour the body and destroy fat cells. Most recently, our favorite treatments have been CoolSculpting® for fat reduction and VelaShape® for tightening and shaping. Over time these treatments get improved upon as we introduce complementary combination treatments such as the Zwave™. The newest addition to our fatfighting arsenal is UltraShape.
What causes our faces to droop and wrinkle? Aging and sun exposure cause our skin to get thinner and more lax due to the loss of collagen. Aging also causes our underlying support structures – fat, muscle and bone – to recede. We lose fat, muscle and bone as the years go by. As a result, the face loses volume and sagging skin develops around the eyes and jawline causing our face to lose its smooth, fresh appearance. So how can you lift, tighten and tone lax, sagging skin? At our practice, Ultherapy is our “go-to” treatment. Ultherapy is the only FDA-cleared procedure to non-invasively lift the eyebrow, neck, and under-chin as well as improve décolletage lines and wrinkles. Ultherapy relies on your body’s own collagen-building process for natural, noticeable results. It deposits focused ultrasound energy deep beneath the skin at the optimal temperature to (1) cause the existing collagen in the skin to contract and (2) trigger the production of fresh, new collagen (neocollagenesis) to help plump up and further tighten the skin over time. It also incorporates traditional ultrasound imaging, which allows us to see the layers of tissue we are treating, ensuring the treatment energy is delivered to where it will be most beneficial. Is Ultherapy safe? Ultrasound has been used safely throughout the medical field for more than 50 years, and Ultherapy has been established as safe and effective in clinical studies and in more than 350,000 treatments worldwide. In our office alone since 2011, we have safely performed over 1,100 treatments and have seen good results with few side effects. What are the side effects? The beauty of Ultherapy is that there is minimal downtime and no redness, peeling or blistering. Some patients experience minor swelling, tingling or tenderness to the touch afterward that can last a few days. The skin might appear flushed at first, but the redness should disappear within a few hours. Other less common post-procedural effects may include temporary bruising or temporary numbness on small areas of skin. Is Ultherapy right for you? A good Ultherapy candidate has mild to moderate skin laxity where the skin begins to feel and look less firm. Examples include a lowered eyebrow line, loose skin on the neck, sagging under the chin, and lines or wrinkles on the chest. How quickly will you see results? Results are seen right away – a lifted brow, more defined jawline, and tighter skin under the chin and on the décolletage. But that is just the beginning. Because Ultherapy stimulates new collagen, results continue to emerge over six months following the procedure. How long does will Ultherapy last? Unfortunately, no long-term longitudinal clinical studies have been conducted, so there is no scientific answer. Since the procedure produces your own collagen, how long the results last really depends on you. Your natural aging process will dictate how long your visible results will last. We recommend a good skin care regimen to enhance and continue collagen stimulation (see home skin care article on pg. 6). How many treatments are needed? The number of treatments you will need is based on the degree of your skin’s laxity, your biological response to ultrasound energy and your individual collagen-building process. Most of my patients have two Ultherapy treatments spaced 4 to 6 months apart. To keep up with the aging process, I recommend a maintenance treatment every 1 to 2 years. How do you get started? Call today to schedule an Ultherapy consult. If Ultherapy is right for you, your procedure will be performed shortly thereafter by one of our experienced board-certified physicians, certified physician assistant, certified nurse practitioner or registered nurse.

UltraShape is the first painless treatment that helps destroy fat cells and contour treated areas. It is the first and only FDA-cleared procedure using focused pulsed ultrasound for abdominal circumference reduction. This mechanical disruption causes the immediate destruction of fat cells. A treatment series consists of 3 visits, spaced 2 weeks apart, that last approximately an hour and half each. Clinical trials showed an average reduction of 1.3 inches in abdominal
circumference after 3 treatments, with some patients losing up to 2.5 inches. Depending on the thickness of the fat layer, we may recommend more than one series or a combination treatment with another device to help you reach your desired goal. We are also performing the UltraShape procedure on bra-fat, flanks and thighs “off label,” meaning the FDA has not cleared the device for these areas yet.
Maria Martinez, Aesthetician Joined SBA in 2001 Maria has been a practicing, licensed aesthetician since 2005. Maria is bilingual in Spanish and English.
Our combination treatments give the best, most aggressive results, and so far we have found that the VelaShape along with the UltraShape can give some pretty magical results. Called Supermode UltraShape, this combination treatment starts with destroying fat cells with the UltraShape. We then use Velashape to tighten and reduce the size of the remaining fat cells, further contour the treated area, and speed healing. Over 300,000 patient treatments have been safely performed worldwide with UltraShape. Come in for a complimentary consultation, and let us design a customized treatment plan to help you achieve a slimmer silhouette.

Double Chins Beware… Kybella™ is here!
Rejuvenating Home Skin Care is Essential!
Many of us have a problem area on our body, where it seems that no matter how much weight we lose, it just does not get better. For some, it is the arms or love handles, but for others it is our submental fat, commonly referred to as a double chin. Because our looks are often what give a first impression, many with a double chin are extremely self-conscious and go to great lengths to hide it.
At Suzanne Bruce and Associates, one of our core principles is that what you do at home to your skin is an essential part of your program to prevent and reverse skin aging. No matter what procedures you do in our office – microdermabrasion, peels, BOTOX® Cosmetic or Dysport®, fillers, lasers or skin tightening – using a good anti-aging skin care regimen will enhance your healing, recovery time and overall results. Even if you opt not to do procedures, you can achieve impressive results with just a good cosmeceutical regimen from our office.
by Tracy Katz, MD
Tracy Katz, MD Joined SBA in 2012 Dr. Katz has been practicing dermatology since 2012. A graduate of The University of Texas at Austin and The University of Texas Medical School at Houston, she completed her dermatology residency training at the University of Kansas School of Medicine.
If this is you, I bring exciting news! Kybella™ is the first and only FDA-cleared injectable treatment that contours and reduces the fullness of a double chin. Up until now the only way to reduce a double chin has been through surgical procedures, such as liposuction or a platysmaplasty. Many of us do not want to have these procedures because of the risks of general anesthesia, potential scarring, cost, and fear of an unexpected outcome. Kybella is an in-office, non-invasive procedure. You are totally awake, and the procedure itself is quick, about 15-20 minutes. So how does it work? Kybella is made from deoxycholic acid, a natural substance made by our body to help break down fat in the intestines. Kybella is administered directly into the fat under your chin and works by destroying the membrane of the fat cell through a process called lipolysis. Your body then eliminates the cell remnants naturally. The number of treatments depends on the severity of the condition. Typically 2 to 4 treatments spaced about a month apart are needed. Still, some patients may need up to 6 treatments. The most common side effects are temporary swelling, bruising, pain, numbness, redness and areas of hardness in the treatment area. After each treatment you will see your double chin get smaller, and the contour of your jawline will improve along with it! Our Center for Skin Research participated in the FDA trials. That study and others showed that patients receiving Kybella reported feeling happier, younger, and better about themselves after treatment. Is Kybella right for you? If your double chin bothers you, then Kybella could be for you. Come in for a consultation or ask your provider about it when you are in the office. You can also visit us at Open House on Saturday, September 26 in Katy!
The Myth Behind “Duck Lips” by Jennifer Peterson, MD
As a natural process of aging, the lips lose structure and volume, which results in thinner, rolled-in, finely lined, and/or flat lips. Other changes include fine lines around the mouth and blurring of our lip border. Some patients are apprehensive about trying lip filler due to concerns about it producing an unnatural, “Real Housewives” and/or “duck lip” effect. The truth is that “duck lips” (lips that look excessively pouty and stick out a little more than natural) or over-inflated lips occur when a lip filler procedure has been done incorrectly or purposefully to get that look. Treating lips is a real art form and requires a delicate, experienced approach to create a balanced, natural appearing lip. Most people don’t even realize how many people have had their lips worked on because it can be that subtle. Restylane® Silk is our “lipstick in a syringe,” It contains hyaluronic acid, just like its big sister Restylane®, but is composed of smaller particles of hyaluronic acid. These smaller particles allow Restylane Silk to provide a natural, hydrating effect to the lips, similar to wearing your favorite lipstick. Because Restylane Silk contains such small particles it does not augment or create large volume to the lips. Instead, it restores the lips to their youthful appearance. Patients report their lips appear, slightly fuller, well hydrated, and with less lines after having Restylane Silk. Restylane Silk is also great for filling in the fine lines around the lips (perioral lines), which form from repetitive moments like sucking on a straw or smoking. Most patients will develop these lines around their lips, and it is best to begin treating them early. Restylane Silk not only lessens the appearance of fine perioral lines but also reestablishes structure which is lost due to repetitive movements. Finally, patients over time may notice that the corners of their mouth (oral commissures) begin to sag and turn downward, giving a “droopy” downturned look. We have the ability to bring the corners of the mouth up to a more neutral position with a combination treatment of Restylane Silk and Dysport® or BOTOX® Cosmetic. We highly recommend taking a look at a photo of yourself in your 20’s and even bringing it to a consultation. The photo gives you a good idea of how your lips looked when you were younger and can help establish what the end goal is between you and your provider. In the end we want to help you obtain a natural, age-appropriate lip that is balanced to your facial structure. Make sure you feel comfortable with your provider’s aesthetic sense and you both understand your goals. Like in all things medical or cosmetic, it’s all about great communication and an experienced injector; with that you are sure to have a fabulous result!
by Suzanne Bruce, MD
There is a difference in the results you can achieve using a drug or department store regimen vs. our physician-dispensed cosmeceutical regimen, such as Revision®, SkinCeuticals®, SkinMedica®, or our newest line, MDRejuvena™. Not only are the products that we dispense stronger than those that are offered over-the-counter, but also the knowledge, technology and personal service offered in our Seeing Is Believing program will get you quicker, more reliable results. When we select which lines we are going to carry, we look carefully at the products and choose companies that have science and research behind their active ingredients. The most recent line we have chosen is MDRejuvena. Its star active ingredient is Phytochromatic MD™ Complex, a naturally-derived, plant-based ingredient. This liposomal complex contains copper that is bound to the water-soluble chlorophyll molecule, chlorophyllin, which allows for slow release of copper in the skin. Copper is needed for a number of important enzymes that have various functions in the skin. As your skin ages, changes in the copper-dependent enzymes can result in fine lines and wrinkles, loss of firmness and uneven skin tone. Providing your skin what it naturally craves results in the appearance of healthier and more radiant skin. Texture, wrinkles, uneven pigmentation, roughness and pores are improved. Another star product we have chosen to carry is Total Defense + Repair, a new sunscreen from
SkinMedica. This game-changing supersunscreen goes beyond ultraviolet (UV) protection to defend against harmful infrared rays while supporting the skin’s ability to restore itself. What sets Total Defense + Repair (TD+R) apart is SOL-IR™ Advanced Antioxidant Complex. This trio of potent antioxidants is what enables this super-sunscreen to protect against infrared radiation and help rejuvenate your skin. TD+R is the perfect sunscreen to pair with your TNS Essential Serum® because both products include powerful, but different, antioxidant blends in addition to the growth factor blend in TNS Essential Serum. Try this wonderful new sunscreen to add a layer of protection and correction to any regimen. To get you started or keep you on your path to healthier, more beautiful skin, call to schedule a free consultation with one of our patient care coordinators or aestheticians. They are skin care experts who can help select the best regimen for you and teach you how to use it. As part of your Seeing is Believing program, they will take a baseline complexion analysis photograph of your skin to serve as a basis for comparison. After 8 and 16 weeks they will see you again and repeat the photos to show you the progress you have made.

Treating Blotchy Skin & Melasma
by Jennifer Peterson, MD
At SBA we strive to stay on the cutting edge of technology. We have just begun offering a q-switched (QS) Nd:YAG laser at both our Houston and Katy locations. QS lasers are most commonly used for improving the appearance of small sun spots, dark colored seborrheic keratosis, flat brown birthmarks, and melasma. Unlike other lasers which treat dark spots along with the surrounding skin, QS lasers can deliver narrow beams of laser energy, 2 to 5 mm in diameter, to target discrete lesions and allow the surrounding skin to remain untreated. Our QS lasers are a great option for you if you want to improve multiple dark sun spots on large body surfaces such as the arms, legs, back, etc. Following the procedure, the spots of treated skin will be red, slightly swollen, and crusted similar to a bug bite. You will be encouraged to apply a healing ointment to the skin for the next few days to a week. Typically 1 to 2 treatments are needed to improve small sun spots or dark keratosis. Recently, a specialized technique using QS lasers administered at low energy levels has been shown to improve melasma. A series of painless treatments are performed and no numbing cream is required. Learn more about this exciting new treatment option at our Open House in Katy on September 26.
Center for Skin Research 2015 has been an incredible year for our research division! Katy has been a fantastic community and has really embraced us.
