Safety at the Guild of Students 

Aberystwyth Guild of Students is committed to a high standard of health and safety compliance and performance

This commitment should be at all levels and is essential in developing a positive safety culture in the workplace based on involvement, not enforcement.

The Guild also seeks to ensure that on leaving the Guild, Students take with them good practices and a positive attitude to health and safety

Health and Safety Law Health and Safety at Work Act 1974 Section 2(2) – safe plant and systems of work, safe handling of articles, Provide information, instruction, training and supervision, maintain safe access and egress, Provide healthy work environment. Section 7 absolute duties on employees – take reasonable care of their own and everybody else’s H&S – Co-operate with employers so they can discharge their duties under the Act. February 2008

Health and Safety Law Risk Assessment Risk assessments are a way of making activities safer by identifying the possible hazards and minimising the risk. HAZARD - Anything that can cause harm e.g. Machinery, electricity, working at heights RISK - The chance (high or low) that the hazard will harm somebody February 2008

Fire Every organisation must risk assess for fire and put in place procedures for evacuation etc. If you are working in someone else’s property 

Acquaint yourself with fire exits

Acquaint yourself with fire fighting equipment

Acquaint yourself with evacuation procedures

Fire Drill 

The Fire Alarm sounders are a classic BELL sound

Tested every Tuesday

If sound carries on for over 10 seconds full evacuation will follow

What do I do if I hear the Fire Alarm ? 

Assist in the evacuation of customers

Close all doors and windows to prevent fire spreading

Lock tills, cash boxes or safes if possible

Leave the building by the nearest available exit

Report to the designated assembly points

Means of Escape 

Acquaint yourself with the nearest fire exit

Do not obstruct exits

Move away from the building -fire can cause explosions

Do not block access for the Emergency Services

Do not re-enter the building until advised to do so

If you discover a fire… • Sound the alarm by breaking the nearest call point • Call for assistance • Turn off gas and/or nearby electrical appliances • Attack fire with appliances provided but without taking personal risks • Check the extinguisher is the correct type for the fire

Top tips for correct handling… 

Avoid manual Handling if possible

Always bend the knees when lifting

Always hold the object as close to you as possible

Never twist when lifting

Try to use the large muscle groups of the legs to exert the force

Use mechanical assistance if possible

Working at Height 

Never use ladders for long periods of work, only access or short duration

Always get someone to steady steps , ladders etc.

Make sure equipment is suitable for work. Stepladders should be checked weekly

Try to keep three points of contact at all times

Noise at Work 

If you cant speak to someone at approximately 1 metre it is likely the levels are above the legal limits Prolonged exposure to noise can lead to permanent hearing loss, Tinnitus, stress etc. If you are instructed to wear them you must co-operate

Electrical Equipment  All office equipment should have been tested  Can be recognized by sticker  Any electrical equipment which is suspected as being a hazard should be reported to the Premises Supervisor.  The equipment will be taken out of circulation and tested

Accident Reporting  Accidents should be reported promptly  Report any near misses, where someone may have been hurt if the circumstances were different e.g. loose carpet tiles etc  Report forms are available in all departments  Report through the line management structure
