What is Saxum International Foundation? Qué es Saxum International Foundation

Saxum International Foundation is a non-profit registered in Italy (Via Torquato Taramelli n.30, 00197 Rome;) (CF 97755970585) in accordance with the laws of Italy. Among other missions, the foundation is responsible for the establishment of an endowment fund for the current and future needs of the Saxum Conference Center, the Saxum Visitor Center and the Saxum Hospitality Training Center, as well as the worldwide fundraising campaign for the construction and development of the above.

Entre otras misiones, la Fundación es responsable del establecimiento de un fondo de dotación para las necesidades actuales y futuras de la Casa de Retiros Saxum y del Centro de Visitantes, así como de la campaña de captación de fondos a nivel mundial para su construcción.

Carta del Presidente Queridos amigos de Saxum:

450 participantes de más de 35 países para caminar juntos y dialogar acerca de la mejor forma de alcanzar este objetivo de primer orden. Saxum quiere ser un lugar de paz, de encuentro y un foro de análisis del contexto social para facilitar el diálogo entre las diferentes culturas que forman la sociedad de Tierra Santa.

A través de estas breves líneas, deseo acompañar la Memoria del desarrollo del proyecto Saxum en 2016 con mi profundo agradecimiento a innumerables personas; particularmente, a quienes -mediante su generosa respuesta, con sus esfuerzos- han posibilitado la consecución de los objetivos fijados en la campaña de promoción económica.

La primera Misa de acción de gracias celebrada en Saxum en el marco de la celebración de la primera edición de Holy Land Dialogues, ha sido el hito más importante de nuestro trabajo en el pasado 2016.

Mención especial exige el apoyo que han prestado numerosas instituciones en colaboración con Saxum Network, como la ACI (Association for Cultural Interchange, Inc.), la Fundación Cárdenas Rosales y tantas otras fundaciones de más de 20 países.

¿Cómo podemos seguir ayudando a Saxum? En primer lugar, con nuestras oraciones; formando parte del programa Amigos de Saxum y, por supuesto, colaborando económicamente en el sostenimiento de las actividades que se desarrollan en el Centro de Visitantes y ayudar así a los peregrinos de todo el mundo a vivir un encuentro personal con Jesús.

Aquel sueño que San Josemaría albergaba para Tierra Santa está próximo a cumplirse: pronto se finalizarán las obras de construcción y esperamos comenzar las actividades ordinarias en junio. Son muchos los que esperan este momento como la oportunidad de vivir una experiencia espiritual única, siguiendo los pasos de Jesús en su tierra.

Questa ultima iniziativa ha riunito 450 partecipanti di più di 35 nazioni per camminare insieme e dialogare sul miglior modo di raggiungere questo primario obiettivo che è la pace. Saxum vuole essere un luogo di pace, di incontro e di analisi del contesto sociale che contribuisca a facilitare il dialogo fra le diverse culture che fanno parte della società della Terra Santa.

Tramite questa breve lettera, vorrei dare il mio contributo alla Memoria sullo sviluppo del progetto Saxum nel 2016, prima di tutto, trasmettendo il mio più sentito ringraziamento alle innumerevoli persone che con la loro generosa risposta e il loro sforzo, hanno fatto possibile il raggiungimento degli obiettivi fissati per la campagna di raccolta di fondi.

La prima messa di ringraziamento celebrata a Saxum nella prima edizione di Holy Land Dialogues, è stato l’evento più importante del nostro lavoro dello scorso 2016.

Occorre ricordare anche il supporto ricevuto da tante istituzioni, alle quali va il nostro sentito ringraziamento, che collaborano con la Saxum Network, come la ACI (Association for Cultural Interchange, Inc), la Fundación Cárdenas Rosales e tante altre fondazioni che operano in più di 20 nazioni.

Come possiamo continuare ad aiutare Saxum? In primo luogo con le nostre preghiere; poi facendo parte del programma di “Amici di Saxum” e senz’altro collaborando economicamente nel sostegno delle attività che si realizzeranno nell’Area Multimediale ed aiutare così ai pellegrini venuti da tutto il mondo a vivere un incontro personale con Gesù.

Quel sogno che San Josemaría aveva per la Terra Santa è quasi compiuto: tra poco finiranno i lavori di costruzione e ci auguriamo di iniziare le attività ordinarie a giugno. Sono tante le persone che aspettano questo momento per avere l’opportunità di vivere una esperienza spirituale unica, seguendo le orme di Gesù sulla terra.

Letter from the President Dear Friends of Saxum, Through these brief lines, I wish to address you in this annual report of the activities developed by the Saxum project in 2016. I extend my deep gratitude to those countless people who have made possible, through their generous efforts, the achievement of the economic goals of our fundraising campaign. A special mention must be made regarding the support provided by numerous institutions in collaboration with the Saxum Network, institutions such as the Association for Cultural Interchange (ACI), the Cárdenas Rosales Foundation and many other local foundations of more than 20 countries. The dream that St. Josemaria had for the Holy Land is about to be fulfilled. Saxum is soon to be finished and we expect to begin ordinary activities in June 2017. Many people are waiting for this moment as an opportunity to live a unique spiritual experience: to follow in the footsteps of Jesus on His land. During the past year, we have continued to promote the Saxum Project in different countries, while developing various initiatives to contribute to an environment of peace in this part of the world. Initiatives like Friends of Saxum, The Trail to Emmaus and, especially, the first edition of Holy Land Dialogues. This last activity brought together 450 participants from more than 35 countries to walk together on pilgrimage and discuss how to attain peace in the Holy Land. Saxum wishes to be a place of concord, encounter, and a forum for analysis of the social context in order to facilitate a dialogue between the different cultures which coexist in the Holy Land. Moreover, the first Mass of Thanksgiving celebrated in Saxum as part of the first edition of Holy Land Dialogues was the most important milestone of our work in the past year.

MISSION MISIÓN

Saxum is a project created to deepen the knowledge of Jesus in the Holy Land, so that pilgrims can love Him more, thus perpetuating the tradition of many pilgrims who experience a transformation in their hearts after their visit.

El proyecto Saxum es un proyecto creado para profundizar en el conocimiento de Jesús en Tierra Santa y para que los peregrinos puedan tratarle y amarle más, perpetuando así la tradición de muchos peregrinos que experimentan una transformación en sus corazones después de haber venido.

Saxum is located in the hills of Judea, in Abu Gosh, from where the beginning of the path that Jesus traveled with the disciples of Emmaus can be marked. The project also seeks to promote understanding and the relationship between the different cultures present in the region.

Visitor Center

The Visitor Center will be an orientation and information center for tour guides and visitors to the Holy Land, where interactive multimedia resources will highlight the Christian heritage and the Jewish roots of the faith. The resources aim to foster a deeper knowledge of other faiths and provide a solid foundation for understanding the holy sites.

Consiste en un centro de orientación e información para visitantes y guías turísticos de Tierra Santa, que ofrece recursos interactivos y multimedia que ilustran la herencia cristiana de la fe, así como sus raíces judías. Esos recursos interactivos tienen como objetivo ayudar a profundizar en el mutuo entendimiento con otras creencias religiosas, así como ofrecer un buen fundamento para comprender mejor el contenido de las visitas que hacen los peregrinos a los lugares santos.

The Visitor Center will be an orientation and information center for individuals and groups visiting the Holy Land. The center will offer visitors:

- State-of-the-art technology, touch-screen tables, a model and map of Jerusalem throughout the ages, as well as videos about the Holy Land, its geography, the Bible, and the main events in the history of salvation that took place in the region.

- A chapel where visitors will be able to attend daily Mass, receive the sacrament of Confession, and pray in a silent, peaceful place.

In addition to offering information and services for pilgrims, the Visitor Center also aims to contribute to the ongoing and vitally important education of tour guides, who accompany thousands of pilgrims each year to the holy sites and have a significant impact on the pilgrims’ experience.

The audio-visual materials of the Visitor Center and the courses for tour guides will be offered in collaboration with Polis, the Jerusalem Institute for Languages and Humanities (www.polisjerusalem.org), which particularly specializes in ancient and Semitic languages.

Conference Center A place for spiritual retreats and conferences inspired by the teachings of Saint Josemaria Escriva, founder of Opus Dei, where faithful from all over the world who desire a renewed encounter with Jesus Christ and the Gospels can experience a new conversion and deepen their desire for holiness and evangelization. The Conference Center will be a peaceful and comfortable place suited for spiritual retreats, workshops, and conferences.

INSPIRATION INSPIRACIÓN «ANOTHER CHARACTER ON THE SCENE…»

San Josemaría Escrivá de Balaguer, fundador del Opus Dei, deseó visitar Tierra Santa durante su vida para seguir, también en eso, los pasos de Jesucristo. Su deseo de visitar Tierra Santa se extendía también a todos sus hijos espirituales en el Opus Dei y a sus familias y amigos, y quería que todos tuvieran la oportunidad, durante su vida, de «rezar, arrodillarse y besar el suelo que Jesús pisó», según nos relata el Beato Álvaro del Portillo.

St Josemaria Escriva, the founder of Opus Dei, longed to visit the Holy Land during his lifetime to follow in the footsteps of Jesus Christ. His deep desire to visit the Holy Land also extended to all his spiritual children in Opus Dei and their families and friends, all of whom he wished could have the opportunity in their lifetimes «to pray, kneel upon, and kiss the soil which Jesus trod upon», as Blessed Alvaro del Portillo related.

«SAXUM, THAT IS WHAT YOU ARE» In 1939 St. Josemaría started to call Blessed Alvaro del Portillo «Saxum» -Latin for rock- because of his fidelity and fortitude. By naming this conference center after him, the organizers wish to show their gratitude towards Blessed Alvaro del Portillo for his life of service to the Church. There is more history behind the name: in 1994, Blessed Alvaro del Portillo, the closest collaborator and first successor of St. Josemaría, went on a pilgrimage to the Holy Land in thanksgiving for his 80th birthday and 50th anniversary of his priestly ordination. On March 23, 1994, just a few hours after having returned to Rome from his pilgrimage, God called Blessed Alvaro to his presence. He had celebrated his last Mass on earth in the Church of the Cenacle (ad Coenaculum) in Jerusalem. That same year, inspired by St. Josemaria’s wish and in memory of Blessed Alvaro del Portillo, the faithful of Opus Dei, together with cooperators and friends, began the search for and planning of a future Conference Center and Visitor Center in the Holy Land.

«SAXUM, SÍ QUE LO ERES» En 1939 San Josemaría había comenzado a llamar al Beato Álvaro del Portillo, Saxum –roca en latín– por su fidelidad y fortaleza. Al dar este nombre a la casa de retiros, los promotores desean manifestar su agradecimiento al Beato Álvaro del Portillo por su vida de servicio a la Iglesia. En 1994, el Beato Álvaro del Portillo, el más estrecho colaborador de San Josemaría y su primer sucesor, hizo la peregrinación a Tierra Santa en acción de gracias. El 23 de marzo de 1994, tan solo unas pocas horas después de haber regresado a Roma desde su peregrinación, Dios llamó al Beato Álvaro del Portillo a su presencia. Había celebrado su última Misa en la tierra en la Iglesia del Cenáculo (ad Coenaculum) en Jerusalén. Ese mismo año, inspirado por el deseo de san Josemaría y en memoria del Beato Álvaro del Portillo, fieles del Opus Dei, junto con algunos cooperadores y amigos, comenzaron la búsqueda y planificación del futuro proyecto Saxum. 22

HOLY LAND DIALOGUES

A single format in the Holy Land Holy Land Dialogues combines the pilgrimage and visit to the Holy Places with a series of conferences given by experts who try to shed light on coexistence and the dialogue between people of different religions in the Holy Land. Participation is open to people from all around the world interested in living a complete and unique experience in the Holy Land.

HOLY LAND The participants in HLD will follow an itinerary that includes the main moments and routes in the life of Jesus, in order to leave sufficient time for prayer and reflection in the Holy Places. The pilgrimage starts at the Saxum Visitor Center that offers a historical, geographical, and theological explanation of the main events of the History of Salvation. In this way, participants can begin their pilgrimage and recognize the key routes and places in history from Abraham to the present day. This invites them to be more aware and to live a deeper experience of faith.

Un formato único en Tierra Santa Holy Land Dialogues combina la peregrinación y visita a los lugares santos, con la asistencia a una serie de conferencias o mesas redondas que pretenden aportar luces sobre la coexistencia y el diálogo entre personas de distintas religiones en Tierra Santa. La participación está abierta a personas de todo el mundo interesadas en vivir una experiencia completa y única en Tierra Santa.

HOLY LAND El itinerario que siguen los participantes en HLD selecciona los principales momentos y recorridos de la vida de Jesús, con el fin de dejar mayor espacio a la oración y reflexión en los lugares santos. La peregrinación comienza en el Centro de Visitantes de Saxum que ofrece una explicación histórica, geográfica y teológica de los principales eventos de la Historia de la Salvación. De esta forma, los participantes pueden comenzar su peregrinación y reconocer las rutas y lugares claves en la historia desde Abraham hasta nuestros días, con el fin de invitar a ser más conscientes y vivir una experiencia más profunda de fe. 24

STI (Social Trends Institute) The Social Trends Institute (STI) is a non-profit international research center dedicated to the analysis of globally significant social trends. To this end, STI brings together the world’s leading thinkers, taking an interdisciplinary and international approach.

STI (Social Trends Institute) Social Trends Institute (STI) es una organización internacional de investigación sin ánimo de lucro dedicada al análisis de las tendencias globales más significativas. Para llevarlo a cabo, STI trata de reunir a los principales líderes del pensamiento actual desde una perspectiva interdisciplinar e internacional.

Currently, STI’s areas of priority study are Family, Bioethics, Culture & Lifestyles, Governance, and Civil Society. Findings are disseminated to the media and through scholarly publications. The individuals and institutions that support STI share a conception of society and the individual that commands a deep respect for the equal dignity of human beings, and for freedom of thought, as well as a strong desire to contribute to social progress and the common good. The first edition of Holy Land Dialogues took place from 6 to 12 November 2016 and was attended by more than 430 people from 30 different countries.

During this meeting, a Mass of Thanksgiving was celebrated for the first time in Saxum, presided by the apostolic administrator of the Latin Patriarchate of Jerusalem, Archbishop Pierbattista Pizzaballa, accompanied by the Apostolic Nuncio in Israel, Giuseppe Lazzarotto.”

«The Road to Emmaus» Altobello Melone (1490–1543)

«The road to Emmaus» is an initiative of the Saxum Foundation which is supported by the Israeli Ministry of Tourism and the Jewish National Fund (KKL). It is a hiking trail that passes through the forests and greenery of the Judean Hills. It is about 30 kilometers in length, and can be walked easily from Jerusalem, at a slight downhill slope without any difficulty or particular skills required.

Visit, pray and... WALK Saxum invites the pilgrims to leave on foot and live a special stage of their pilgrimage touring «The road to Emmaus»: the path that the disciples of Emmaus walked next to Jesus. Being a 30-kilometer road, it can easily be included in the itinerary of a pilgrimage. In turn, Saxum Visitor Center will be the information point for walkers, where they will receive information about the place, quotes, and reflections.

The experience of the guides On November 24, a field trip was organized in collaboration with the Yad Ben Zvi Institute as part of the ongoing training courses for the guides in the Holy Land. More than 40 professional guides of different religions walked the road to Emmaus under the direction and explanations of a teacher from the Polis Institute, Henri Gourinard. The day followed the following objectives:

COURSES FOR TOUR GUIDES CURSOS PARA GUÍAS

Providing permanent training for the tour guides of the Holy Land is one of the objectives of the Saxum Visitor Center. It is intended to make a valuable contribution to the Christian formation of professional guides of Israel in order that they can improve their service to the pilgrims. Polis - The Jerusalem Institute of Languages and Humanities, together with the Saxum International Foundation, are responsible for delivering historical knowledge, and they serve as the didactic basis of these courses. The Saxum International Foundation has participated in the development of courses meant for Israeli professional guides organized by the Yad Itzhak Ben Zvi Institute of Israel about some aspects of Christianity. In January of this year, a session was given about languages spoken in Palestine in the first century and languages that Jesus Christ could have spoken. Christophe Rico, director of the Polis Institute, took care of more than 50 students of different religions.

EL AL AIRLINES

While the Saxum International Foundation is making the Saxum project a reality, we feel the need as one of our missions to establish continuity so that many people may continue to go to the Holy Land, thus fulfilling the desire of Saint Josemaria. That is why we have a collaboration agreement between the Saxum International Foundation and the Israeli airline El Al.

Dentro de las misiones de Saxum International Foundation de hacer realidad el proyecto Saxum, también sentimos la necesidad de establecer los cauces para darle continuidad en el tiempo y ayudar para que muchas personas puedan cumplir el deseo de San Josemaría de ir a Tierra Santa. On November 25, the Saxum team was able to meet with the CEO of El Corte Inglés Travel to establish a framework of collaboration with the following objectives:

- To make the Saxum Visitor Center known to the customers of Viajes El Corte Inglés.

ARGUMENTS A collaboration agreement has been established between the Saxum International Foundation and the organization Arguments in order to improve the communications department of the Foundation. Arguments is made up of a group of young media professionals who are responsible at Saxum for telling Saxum’s story across various media platforms via content creation and strategy.

ACI: Association for Cultural Interchange, a non-profit organization registered in the U.S., is the main promoter of this project and is the owner of the land and future headquarters of Saxum. To build it and develop its activities, it relies on the collaboration of all those who understand and appreciate the impact the Saxum project will have, and with this object in mind, it has signed agreements with foundations and charitable organizations from several countries. www.culturalinterchange.org ••• Cárdenas Rosales Foundation has signed an agreement as co-owner of the Saxum project with ACI and manages promotions and donations for the project in Spain. www.cardenasrosales.org ••• Saxum International Foundation, headquartered in Italy, also cooperates with ACI in the worldwide campaign for donations and helps design the program of activities for Saxum. www.saxum.org ••• The Saxum Foundation, the Cárdenas Rosales Foundation, and the ACI (Association for Cultural Interchange) have asked the Prelature of Opus Dei to provide for the spiritual needs of pilgrims who wish to participate in such activities.

The fundraising campaign of the Saxum International Foundation is an ambitious search for economic resources around the world to carry out our missions and vision. The goal is to obtain $60 million for construction and equipment, with an additional amount for an endowment fund that will sustain the project and its ability to aid pilgrims. The fruits of this campaign will help pilgrimage to the Holy Land become an experience that will transform the hearts of the pilgrims and revitalize their faith.

La campaña de captación de fondos de la Fundación Saxum es un ambicioso esfuerzo de búsqueda de recursos económicos en el mundo entero que es llevada a cabo para cumplir nuestra misión y visión. Con la meta de conseguir $60 millones de dólares correspondientes a la construcción y equipamientos y una cantidad adicional para la creación de un fondo de dotación que garantice la sostenibilidad del proyecto y la concesión de ayudas a grupos de peregrinos, los frutos de esta campaña ayudarán a transformar la experiencia de las personas que peregrinan a Tierra Santa en una oportunidad de transformar los corazones y revitalizar la fe.

Building and Construction Finance the purchase of the land and the construction of Saxum

1. Edificios y Construcción – Financiar la compra del terreno y la construcción de Saxum.

Resources and Development Finance the facilities and equipment of the administration that will take care of the conference center; the development of educational resources in multiple languages; and the acquisition of the necessary technological tools for the Visitor Center

THE ENGINE BEHIND SAXUM The enthusiasm and energy of Mons. Javier Echavarría, Bishop Prelate of Opus Dei drove the Saxum project forward until the he passed away. A memorial Mass for the eternal rest of his soul took place on Friday, December 16, 2016, in the Basilica of Gethsemane (Jerusalem). “We are very saddened by his death and by the fact that he was not able to see the project finished. But, at the same time, we are confident that now, from heaven, he will be able to keep helping us even more than before.”, Alejandro Bertelsen, General Director Saxum.Ltd.

EL MOTOR DETRÁS DE SAXUM El entusiasmo y energía del que fue prelado del Opus Dei, Mons. Javier Echeverría, impulsó el proyecto Saxum hasta el día de su fallecimiento en diciembre de 2016. Pocos días después de su fallecimiento, tuvo lugar una misa de funeral en sufragio por su alma en la Basílica de Getsemaní en Jerusalén. “Estamos muy tristes por su muerte y por el hecho de que no le fue posible ver el proyecto terminado.
