The simple answer is that when the French explorer Champlain visited the north country in the early 1600s, in what is now New York State, he unwittingly stepped into a dispute between the two bitter rivals…. The Mohawks and the Huron… This encounter took place at what was to be a major crossroads of war for the next 160 years…Ft. Ticonderoga….
