Healthcare costs are a significant concern for many Americans, particularly for those approaching retirement. One increasingly popular way to manage medical expenses is to save into a Health Savings Account (HSA). If you have access to an HSA, read on for details on how you may use it to optimize your healthcare savHealthcare ings.

Concerned About Expenses in Retirement? How HSAs Can Help

The funda-

mentals of using HSAs In order to have access to an HSA, you generally must be covered under a high deductible health plan (HDHP) and have no other form of health coverage. Medicare participants cannot make HSA contributions. High deductible health plans require you to make larger out-of-pocket payments to meet the plan’s deductible amount. The minimum deductible is $1,350 for an individual or $2,700 for a family. The total out-of-pocket maximum (including deductibles, co-payments and co-insurance, but not premiums) can be as high as $6,650 for an individual and $13,300 for a family.

Since HDHP plans come with larger up-front costs, they generally offer a HSA to help participants manage their medical expenses. In 2018, individuals can contribute up to $3,450 annually to their HSA while families (two or more covered under the same plan) can make an annual contribution of up to $6,900. Contributions can either be made on a regular basis (such as monthly deposits into your account), at various times during the year or even all at once. All HSA contributions for 2018 must be made by April 15, 2019, the tax filing deadline. The advantages of using HSAs HSAs offer three key benefits. First, they provide a flexible source of savings to cover a variety of out-of-pocket qualifying medical expenses. Examples include prescription drugs, x-rays, urgent care, dental care, eyeglasses, eye surgery, or even your insurance deductible. Check with your tax professional or visit

Guardian of the Farm

Jag is the official outside dog. His job is to alert us of burglars and keep assorted wildlife from moving into the yard. Some days, he is better at his job than others. He does a fine job with burglars. When a vehicle drives down our road, he is alert and ready. If the vehicle turns into our driveway and he does not recognize it immediately, he barks viciously. In this way, he has done a remarkable job of protecting us from the Fed Ex man and the mailman. He has become a bit lax lately when it comes to protecting his yard from wildlife. For years, he has chased any rabbit or squirrel he sees. During all this time, he has never caught one unless someone has shot it for him. Since the weather has been so hot during for the past week, Jag seems to have developed the attitude of “why bother.” Sunday afternoon, he was resting in his chair on the porch (my chair) while two squirrels chased each other around the yard. He watched with only mild interest and made no effort to drive them off. I pointed at them and told him to go get them. He looked at me as if to say, “If you want them, you go get them.” I could understand if he did not see them. If a person points their finger, he looks at their hand. Pointing does not compute unless it is a gun. When I point a gun, he understands exactly where I am aiming and is convinced I am going to shoot something for him. He is also convinced I will never miss a shot. It is nice that he has so much faith in me. Since I was not going to shoot anything, my wife, Jag, and I watched the squirrels play as though they owned the place. By dusk, the temperature outside had dropped to a tolerable level. My wife and I were on the porch again, enjoying a cool breeze as the last rays of sunlight faded in the west. I pulled up another chair as Jag was still lounging in mine. I could see no point in kicking him out as he had things well under control from his vantage point. My wife spotted three deer down at the lake about a hundred yards away. They slowly grazed up the hill toward the house. If they stopped to browse on my apple trees, there was going to me trouble. If the dog would not chase them, I would go chase them myself. Fortunately, they grazed right on by, heading toward the bird feeders. I pointed at them and told Jag to get them. He pretended not to see them. By this time, they were fifty feet away. We enjoy watching the deer, but I draw the line at feeding them bird seed. If we let them get away with it once, in a week we would have fifty head of deer eating everything in the yard. When I stood up, the deer ran a few steps. Jag could no longer pretend to not see the deer and may have thought I was going for a gun. Like the trusty watch dog he is supposed to be, he jumped down from the chair, ran off the porch and across the yard half-heartedly chasing the deer. He was proud of himself when the deer ran away as he strutted back to the porch. I cannot say as I blame the dog for being a bit lazy when the weather is so hot. I am a bit that way myself. We will just have to accept the fact, on hot days, guard duties are only performed at a marginal level.

I’ve still got it With applications sent out to various school districts, Annie had been packing her household for weeks getting ready for the inevitable move. When she accepted a teaching position at a rural district, she set out on her own to Mason City, Iowa to find an apartment; picking a place without the assistance of her parents - without her dad’s help. I was so proud of her and at the same time found myself wallowing in a bit of self pity. She’s all grown up now, maybe she doesn’t need her dad anymore. Then came the call, “When can you come help me move, Dad?” she asked. I smiled. Maybe I’ve still got it - this Dad thing. “We can come down Sunday, after church.” I told her. I called U-haul to reserve a trailer and found out that there weren’t any U-haul stores open along our route to pick up on Sunday. We would have to get the trailer in Duluth and pull it down to Winona. I priced multiple options; whether to bring it back to Duluth, taking advantage of the local rental discounts, or pay more to drop it off in Mason City or Waterloo. I told the operator I would have to check some things and call back. We would need the trailer for two days. A local rental would be $60 for two days, $90 to leave it in Mason City, or $119 in Waterloo; which would be handy as I could use the trailer to help our oldest daughter, Sydney, with a project. You know that old adage; two birds, one stone. I called U-haul back. The kid on the line confirmed the various prices being held in the “quote” file for a one-way rental. “And how much if I return it to Duluth?” I asked. “$139,” he told me. He threw down the gauntlet - I accepted his challenge. The Uhaul sparring began. “It can not possibly be more to return it to Duluth.” I said. He confirmed, “Yeah, it is. It will be $139.” “There is no way. If I pick up and return the same place, it’s a local rental at $30 per day.” I explained. “That’s not what my screen says.” He replied. Frustrated, I said, “Well, clean your screen because it’s wrong.” He started babbling on, trying to explain the logic behind the pricing structure, then said, “Oh, you’re right. It would only be $30 per day.” Ugh. “And to leave it in Mason City?” I asked. He confirmed, “$90 if you leave it in Mason City, Iowa.” I crunched the numbers quickly to calculate the difference in additional fuel cost to return the trailer to Duluth. “Okay, let’s reserve the trailer to be picked up in Duluth, Minnesota, and dropped off in Mason City, Iowa, by noon on Tuesday.” I said. He repeated the order, gathered some additional information, then said, “...and your total will be $146.” “It was $90 to Mason City.” I reminded him. “Well, the price went up.” He replied. Visit to find out how the story ends.

JUNE 20, 201 8 (Financial cont’d from pg 1) about-publication-969 to learn what expenses you can cover with an HSA. The second benefit HSAs provide is a tax-efficient source of funds. With an HSA, you can: • Deduct the value of any contributions to an HSA from your income taxes, even if you don’t itemize deductions; • Exclude from your income any contributions made to your HSA by your employer; • Accumulate earnings (interest, etc.) on savings in the account on a tax-free basis; and • Receive tax-free distributions to pay for qualified medical expenses. The third key feature of HSAs is that the money doesn’t have to be spent by a specific deadline. Funds can continue to accumulate in the account and be used at a later date, including retirement. The longer you contribute to a HSA, the more likely it is that you will accumulate meaningful savings which you can invest in other areas.

A retirement supplement Keep in mind that once you retire (and reach at least age 65), you can enroll in Medicare to help cover your heath expenses. Be aware that you will still need to pay premiums, including for Part B, the Part D prescription drug plan and Medicare supplemental insurance policies. In addition, Medicare generally doesn’t cover long-term care expenses, so you may need to purchase some form of long-term care coverage. Visit coverage/prescription-drugsoutpatient.html to see a list of what costs are covered. Your HSA savings are available for you to use on a tax-free basis to pay Medicare-related premiums and even to pay premiums for long-term care insurance. This is in addition to other qualified out-of-pocket expenses you may face in retirement.
