Flotilla Sailing in Turkey
Medsail Holidays has teamed up with its Turkish FlotillaSailing partner who have over 25 years experience of sailing holidays in the Mediterranean, to offer bareboat and flotilla sailing in two of the best cruising areas inTurkey. We have nine type of charter yachts in our fleet: eight Aloa’s 27 , two Comets 1050, one Gib’Sea 33, two Oceanis 331, and Oceanis 361, one Sun Odyssey 36.2, Sun Odyssey 40.3, one Oceanis 381 and one Bavaria 41 Holiday. The Aloa 27 and the Comet 1050 are equipped with a tiller, which makesthem easy to sail and offersmore space in the cockpit area. Both Bavaria’sand Oceanis’are equipped with a steeringwheel.Theyachtsall have a dinghy for transport(and/orfun¡).Allour yachtsare equipped with a VHF for contact with our base or the leadboat.Besidesthere is good GSM coveragealong the Turkishcoast and Greek Islands.Youcan chargeyour mobile phone on board with a 12 V standardlighteroutlet.
Advantages of Flotilla Sailing A flotilla consists of a group of yachts ( around five and maximum ten boats) which all follow the same itinerary. During the day you sail independently but you can always refer back to the lead boat. We all depart from the same harbour or bay and meet again all together in the evening. Every morning a briefing takes place in which the cruising plan of the day is discussed, a weather report is given (when necessary!) and where you get useful tips about that day’s cruising. This is where we are “at home”! Once on your way you can contact the lead boat by VHF, an easy-to-handle sender/receiver radio transmitter. The flotilla leader also gives technical help if necessary. Even experienced sailors often choose to go with a flotilla because of the social advantage of sailing in a group.
What experience do I need? To join a flotilla at least one person on board must have enough sailing experience to be able to safely navigate a yacht of this size. If you can easily sail an open sailing boat on a lake, this should be sufficient experience for sailing in the Gocek area.
If you feel doubtful about your sailing ability you might take a course in your own country before leaving to refresh your knowledge. Also we can sail with you for half a day or a day to introduce you to the yacht. In this case, let us know beforehand!
Flotilla from Gocek One of the big differences to most of the other flotilla companies is that there is no strict program. As a change to all those strictly scheduled, never varying itineraries our slogan is: “Let’ be flexible!” Another ... is the international character of our group. For a start we plan our program according the inquiries we get in a certain period. If we have more one-week bookings the route will be going more or less around the Gulf of Fethiye. But do we get more two-week bookings, we will plan instead a longer route which “one-weekers” can join at any stage during its duration (we can organise your transfer.) You have the option to join the flotilla programme of another company if we do not have enough inquiries for a particular week of the season to fill our own The itineraries may as well go in western as in eastern direction, sometimes even to some of the nearby Greek islands like Rhodes or Symi ... but will always be discussed with the group.
Lunch in the cockpit
Flotilla Program There is a great choice of itineraries along this beautiful coast, still one of the last unspoiled shores of the Mediterranean. Every single day we will ask our guests what they might prefer (a quiet bay or a harbour place, long or short distance...) and just let see where the wind blows us! On request and in mutual agreement with the group we can also offer night (evening) sailing, a great experience on a full moon night! Daily distances generally vary between 10 and 40 nautical miles, which makes a daily average of four and half hours of sailing a day. WHEN TO SAIL...

These cruising areas have ideal sailing conditions with steady day breezes. The islands are each very different and allow a good day’s sail between them. On the flotilla routes there are many beautiful anchorages for lunchtime swimming and attractive harbours for overnight mooring.
ITINERARIES Gocek –Kalkan -Kekova –Gocek passing from St. Nicholas island, the pictoresqe harbours of Kalkan and Kas, the Greek island of Kastellorizon with a visit to the blue cave and finally two days around the beautiful area of Kekova with its sunken city. Gocek –Ekincik -Bozburun –Gocek passing from Ekincik, the delta of the Dalyan river with it’s famous turtle beach, Marmaris and surroundings, Rhodes or Symi and back to Gocek.
Welcome drinks party 3
Sailing through the fantastic Lycian coast Lots of sun, warm turquoise water, a nice breeze and many quiet small bays and inlets, with the pine forests reaching down to the sea, are the main “ingredients” of a cruise along the Lycian coast. There is a great choice of itineraries along this beautiful coast, still one of the last unspoiled shores of the Mediterranean. Our home base is Gocek, situated in the far north-west corner of the Bay of Fethiye. Over the past years Gocek has developed into a well-known, lively town which attracts yachtsmen from all over the world. It became one of the most popular charter bases along the Turkish coast and provides a variety of facilities like souvenir shops, markets, restaurants, hotels and pensions and all these within a short walk. One of the big advantages is that it is only a half hour drive away from Dalaman International Airport, in short: an ideal starting point for your sailing holidays.
Göcek and surroundings Leaving Gocek you enter an unique archipelago of various islands, small bays and inlets with the pine forests reaching down to the sea. Also historically the area is of great interest. The whole region once belonged to the Lycian Civilization (around 700 B.C. – 500 A.D.) and you can visit the well-known kings’ tombs in 7Tomb Bay), the ruins of the ancient city of Lydea, just a short walk up from the Bay of Kizilkuyruk. From later periods there are several remains from Roman and Byzantium times such as Cleopatra Bay where you find the ruins of a Byzantium Monastery and of where it is said that Cleopatra herself 7used to have her bath)! If you leave the archipelago of Fethiye Bay you can sail out on the open sea in eastern direction to Kalkan, Kas, the island of Kastelorizon and Kekova or in a western direction to Ekincik, Marmaris or even cross over to the island of Rhodes.
SAILING IN THE AREA The area offers no particular difficulties for relaxed
sailing. There are no tides, no currents and no high waves. During the summer months the “meltem” is blowing (starting from June and dying off in October), though not as strongly as around the Aegean islands. This provides the sailor with a steady and regular afternoon wind around 4/5 Beaufort. The water temperature is all summer long perfect for swimming, snorkling and diving and never gets below 19 degrees C! Our two-week flotilla program in 2005 will take the eastern route to Kekova, while the one-week program will be around the Gulf of Fethiye.

They are all provided with the standard charter equipment like hand GPS, deepsounder, speedometer and log, furling genoa, sun awning, bimini, basic navigation and safety equipment, cooking utensils, crockery and cutlery, bed linen, pillows and sleeping bags or anything else you basically need on your trip! Our Charter Yachts and the crew are fully insured by Allianz
The Aloa 27 (single cabin) The Aloa 27 (single cabin) was originally a French yacht that has been redesigned for sailing in the Mediterranean by the Dutch designer Frans Maas. It is easy to handle and proves to be a good sailing vessel. Given its size, it has spacious accommodation for a maximum of 5 people. Also the cockpit has a very practical design: you can sit and lie comfortably, not something you can say of every yacht of this size.
Accommodation The accommodation is simple but adequate. In the fore cabin there is a double bed situated behind a sliding door. On the starboard side there is the toilet and a small sink, while on the opposite port side is a wardrobe. The saloon has two benches. The one on the starboard side can be converted into a double bed with a fold-away table in the middle. There is also an extra berth (under the cockpit) where you might stow luggage or even use as a bed for a fifth person. The galley has a two-ring gas stove and an ice box. (Ice is available in all the harbour places and can be delivered to the boat) Tip: do not bring hard suitcases but soft luggage bags that can be stowed away easily.
Equipment on Board Tiller, compasses, Garmin GPS, Icom VHF Radio, Autohelm depth sounder and log, basic navigation equipment, maps, binoculars, life jackets and life lines, rescue harnasses and all the basic safety equipment (fire extinguisher/fire blanket). The boat is equipped with a holding tank and comes with a dinghy. For more details click on “inventory list” below.

Accommodation The yacht has a comfortable pantry with a 3-ring gas stove plus oven and a fridge (the fridge works when the boat engine is running). Between the saloon and the fore cabin there is a toilet with shower. The interior of the Comet 1050, with its comfortable corner bench, makes sitting inside more attractive than in the Aloa, which is an advantage in early spring or late autumn. There is a double bed in the fore cabin, a convertible double bed in the saloon plus a single bed on the port bench, and another double bed in the aft cabin. So there is space for up to seven people.
