MULERIDER ATHLETICS TOGETHER WE CAN The 2012-2013 athletic year was one to remember as our student-athletes posted many outstanding accomplishments. As a department, SAU finished the athletic year fifth in the GAC All-Sports Trophy; a four-spot improvement from the previous year. Galvanizing that jump was the SAU football team finishing 8-3 and earning their first post-season berth since 2003. Additionally, the Mulerider baseball team captured their second straight GAC baseball championship and third consecutive conference championship in as many years. Moreover, our men’s cross country team produced the GAC Male Runner of the Year to go along with the Steve Browning Director of Athletics

team’s third-place finish in the conference meet. A testament to our department-wide success last year, our volleyball, softball, men’s basketball, men’s and women’s cross country, and golf teams all competed in post-season conference tournaments. As a result of the team’s successes, numerous Muleriders earned honors for their individual performances, and in the classroom 125 student-athletes earned grade point averages of 3.00 or greater. Indeed, we had a great year athletically in 2012-13, but an accomplishment we received as a department speaks volumes to where our department is heading; both on and off the field.

Conference: Southern Arkansas University is a member of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division II and the Great American Conference.

In April, Mulerider Athletics was presented with the NCAA Division II Award of Excellence for Community Engagement for their “Muleriders in Magnolia” initiative that saw the studentathletes at SAU engage in over 1,300 hours of community service. This community service award is the equivalent of winning a national championship! As we move forward, we continue to look for opportunities to improve Mulerider athletics through facility enhancements, increased scholarships, and other methods. We cannot be successful in our efforts, however, without you. Please help us strengthen Mulerider athletics by joining the Mulerider Club at the highest level possible. Your support will have a direct and positive impact on the lives of our student-athletes. We hope to see you at many Mulerider athletic events this year. Thank you for supporting the Muleriders!

Muleriders in Magnolia The NCAA Division II Award of Excellence for Community Engagement serves as the Division II National Championship for community engagement. The Muleriders were chosen for the national recognition in 2013 as a result of the “Muleriders in Magnolia” campaign. “Muleriders in Magnolia” is an on-going community engagement activity that was established in an effort to connect Mulerider athletics back to the community of Magnolia. It became clear to many in the athletic department at Southern Arkansas, including Director of Athletics Steve Browning, that the community of Magnolia is one of the biggest supporters of Mulerider athletics, and that the relationship needed to be reciprocated. One of the chief goals of the program was to not only get athletes out in the community, but to do so in a unified effort. Prior to this program, several teams did their own community engagement, but “Muleriders in Magnolia” allowed that to continue with a unified front for the athletic department. For the calendar year of 2012, “Muleriders in Magnolia” saw a total of 132 student-athletes participate in community service activities on nine separate occasions. Organizations that student-athletes went to in the Magnolia community included: Central Elementary, Eastside Elementary, Magnolia Health and Rehab, McNeil Head Start, South Arkansas Youth Services, and Wee Care. Student-athletes spent time decorating Magnolia Health and Rehab with Christmas decorations and they also interacted with youth by engaging in various recreational activities.
