There’s a challenge for every design. I believe design is driven through purpose. When I design something there’s always something to backup my reasoning. The challenge is to see the problem and find a solution.

Shots for Everyone Packaging System

HISTORY

Few spirits are as shrouded in myth and mystery as tequila— and for a good reason. While it’s possible—probable, even—that the Aztecs knew how to throw a real rager, tequila didn’t start out as the partier’s shot of choice. It didn’t even start out as the tequila we know today. The Aztecs prized a fermented drink known as pulque, which used the sap of the agave plant (this technique was also likely used by the Olmecs, an even older civilization dating back to 1000 B.C. that was based in the lowlands of Mexico). The milky liquid was so important to Aztec culture that they worshipped two gods known for their relationship to booze. The first was Mayahuel, the goddess of the maguey, and the second was her husband Patecatl, the god of pulque. Though the first documentation of pulque—on stone walls, of course—appeared around 200 A.D., the drink really caught on centuries later when the Aztecs received a surprise visit from the Spanish.

CHALLENGE 01

Accessiblity allows structured and usuable packaging

DESCRIPTION Create a packaging set of four to six glasses. Research an existing brand and create a design that was cohesive with the existing brand. The design should reflect on the brand and make the current voice speak to the target audience. Protecting the glass is very important as well as making it easy and functional.

POSITION The main focus of this project was to protect any type of glassware. Something that was visible and easy to carry. A small wooden box with engraved typography was enough to match the original brands look and feel. The box uses a sliding design to get the shot glasses out easily and fast. The brown distressed color evokes the sense of old mexico and what it took to harvest this very old and popular drink.

OVERVIEW

HISTORY

The fish is immersed into a blend of lemon, salt, aji amarillo peppers, and ground pepper. It is often spelled seviche or cebiche, depending on which part of South America it originates from. Ceviche is seafood prepared in a centuries old method of cooking by contact with the acidic juice of citrus juice instead of heat. The preparation and consumption of ceviche is practically a religion in parts of Mexico, Central, and South America, and it seems as though there are as many varieties of ceviche as people who eat it. It can be eaten as a first course or main dish, depending on what is served with it. Ceviche’s birthplace is disputed between Peru and Ecuador, and as both countries have an amazing variety of fish and shellfish, it could easily have come from the ancient Inca civilizations of Peru and Ecuador. Every Latin American country has given seviche/ceviche its own touch of individuality by adding its own particular garnishes.

Systems organize units into a coherent layout

DESCRIPTION Design a cookbook around an umbrella topic. Structure and research the topic thoroughly. Every page in the book should flow consistently from the table of contents to the chapter openers. Use photos to evoke what your topic is and go in depth to keep your viewer interested.

POSITION Images that portay the fishing culture that relate the topic of ceviche are among serif fonts and pastel color palettes. Most images are cropped and sliced in certain ways to display what cutting a fish can be like. The soft colors relate to the types of fish used for ceviche. The low opacity square elements are meant to make the splits in the image less noticeable and more practical.

Collage Mania Packaging System

HISTORY

Originally built in 1903, the space has changed surprisingly little over the many intervening years. It all began in the haight with the opening of Magnolia Pub & Brewery in 1997. The roots of this long, strange trip go back to the late 80’s, or maybe decades before that, depending on how you look at it. Dave McLean discovered good beer while in college in Boston. He also discovered the Grateful Dead, moved to San Francisco (to the Haight, of course), started home brewing, and decided to open a brewery. Always a fan of cask-conditioned ale, the deal was sealed after Dave took a couple of mid-90’s brewery trips to England after his time studying brewing science at UC Davis. He came back not just with a deeper appreciation for cask beer but also a new love for the English pub and the powerful sense of community and local pride that they cultivate. The original brewpub set out from day one to marry the hospitality and community of the great pubs of England with a quirky, artisan brewery shoe-horned into a tiny basement. Added to that was a love for the eccentricity, free thought, and independence.

CHALLENGE 03

Contrast leads the eye through the composition

DESCRIPTION Take an existing beer brewery and redesign their current packaging to have a better brand voice. The new packaging had to stand out and and make an impact in the market. Evaluate what your target audience was and why this redesign packaging was the solution

POSITION The magnolia brewery has a very distinct look and feel. Its located in the Haight and Ashbury district. I wanted the collages to have a big relation to the DADA movement because it was distressed and rebellious like the Haight street kids. Contrast was the main goal so when the package was far you can see exactly what it was. The matte black color gives a bold look that tells you not to mess around. After all the percentage of alcohol in this specific flavor is higher than most common beers.

Splash Paint Packaging System

HISTORY

Many modern paints are made using chemicals that are harmful to the planet and human health. No longer does “going green mean a sacrifice in paint or color quality. The eco-friendly paint market has grown and evolved: the paints we feature here perform like premium conventional paints (offering good coverage, vibrant colors, durability, and longevity) but without harmful odors, chemicals, or added solvents. For a quick primer on the definitions of paint toxicity and the like, see what is the Greenest Can of Paint? Increasing concerns about the impact of chemical paints on health and the environment have led to a growing market in non-toxic paints. Environmental regulations have forced conventional paint companies to significantly reduce their VOC content, and most of the large paint companies now offer one or more varieties of non-toxic paints. However, many of these still contain VOC solvents, chemical pigments and fungicides.

Positive & negative space considers a rhythm of balance

DESCRIPTION To create an all green sustainable powder paint packaging system thats easy to pour and has a cohesive brand throughout. Make it easy for the consumer what it is and it can compete with other paints in the shelves There was an interior and an exterior paint line along with the brushes.

POSITION Array was the sub-brand name chosen to be the new line for Benjamin Moore. Powdered paint is getting popular among millenials who love using sustainable and green products. The design was made specifically to pour the paint easily and able to conserve it in a smart way. In the line, there is exterior and interior paint. The target audience is laid back millenials who love the earth and have an average budget.

Learn The Chakras Visual System

HISTORY

These are the major points that have been identified as critical by multiple spiritual traditions. The chakras are important centers of energy that appear throughout your body. For thousands of years, keeping the chakras in balance has been linked to maintaining mental and physical well being. Through chakra meditation, you can improve the balance of your key chakras and bring your health and mental attitude into a more peaceful state. Because chakras are part of an intimately connected system, there is only so much work you can do on singular chakras. It’s better to meditate on all of them to bring the entire system into balance. With time and experience, you’ll get better at detecting individual imbalances and directing your meditation to focus on particular chakras.

Proximity connects items to form a unit

DESCRIPTION To create a conference based on a word given. Make a promotional piece to get people excited for the event. The project included 3 posters, a website, and a booklet. These items included all the tour dates for the events and the information needed.

POSITION The seven was a conference based on meditation. I used the seven chakras to drive my concept. Each concept already had a symbol, but was too busy and complicated. I decided to make a system of shapes that interprets what each chakra was. The book explains which symbol stands for each chakra and also where the chakra is located in the body. Conference dates and guest speakers are included.

The Pollinators Visual System

HISTORY

The pollinator population of an area is a great indicator of the overall health of an ecosystem. There is evidence that populations of native and managed pollinators are in decline, and the loss of benefits derived from them is being felt by the agricultural community. Human activity such as urbanization can lead to habitat fragmentation or destruction. Changes in agricultural practices and the use of broad-spectrum pesticides can disrupt or destroy long-established pollinator habitats. Other factors leading to pollinator decline include disease, and the spread of invasive plant species. Insects and other animal pollinators are vital to the production of healthy crops for food, fibers, edible oils, medicines, and other products. The commodities produced with the help of pollinators generate significant income for producers and those who benefit from a productive agricultural community. Pollinators are also essential components of the habitats and ecosystems that many wild animals rely on for food and shelter.

The website followed the same system and helped relate it to the the book and video.

POSITION The word pollination inspired this book. I visually described the concept of pollination by using emphasis and contrast to guide the viewer. To make it more personal I created a note style composition across the book. Charles Darwins notes were important throughout history, so it was necessary. I chose spring colors to represent the time of year when pollination occurs.

True Lovebirds UX/UI

HISTORY

If you’re a millennial dating in 2017, chances are you or someone you know is on some kind of app. Often on multiple apps at once, users can swipe through dozens of profiles every minute and plan multiple dates, whether in hopes of a love match or a hook-up. Decisions to meet arise from limited information: A convenient location; a sultry glance captured in pixels; a mutual interest in “banter.” In 2014, Tinder users were spending as long as 90 minutes a day on the site. But fake profiles abound, sexual predators use the sites, and some common online dating behavior— like meeting alone after scant acquaintance, sharing personal information, and using geolocation—puts users at risk. Dating companies are being pushed to better protect users, but some seem reluctant to do more— or even to talk about whether there’s a problem. Sixteen percent said that there were problems with personal information security. It can be weird feeling — like you’re putting information out there that you don’t necessarily want to.

DESCRIPTION To design an application that would be intuitive and could flow easily from screen to screen. Research was a big component. Figuring out the user personas and doing interviews with possible users was required. Process and revises were included throughout the the semester. Finally transferring our screens to invision.

POSITION Dating apps are a popular way of finding new relationships. It’s difficult to start a relationship offline or online. Embr is a social/dating app that matches users based only on their answers to five random questions without a photo exchange. Users get to know eachother based on personality first, therefore avoiding initial appearance bias.

Football Life Rebrand System

HISTORY

The demise of the Deltas continues San Francisco’s bad history of professional soccer. The San Francisco Deltas recently completed a fairytale expansion year with a North American Soccer League championship. Unfortunately, the team’s success on the pitch could not overcome its struggles off the field. A former tech company CEO, Helmick tried to combine the best practices of the Bay Area startup tech industry with a community-first vision for the club. The Deltas planned to bring tech-inspired innovations to its games, including a virtual reality fan experience and Artificial Intelligence (AI) ticketing that was never fully realized. Despite the team’s outreach and ambitions, they struggled out of the gate. After 4,400 fans attended the opening match at Kezar Stadium, the team went through a period of games averaging just over 2000 fans through the first half of the season. Helmick wrote a mid-season blog post warning about the team’s financial issues and challenged fans to help fix the team’s problems with attendance as well as possibly attract more outside investment.

Balance assigns the visual weight of objects, colors and space

DESCRIPTION

The project required to choose an existing airline, sports team or taxi service brand to redesign. There was a brand guidelines book and mockups to visually show how the brand would work across all systems.

POSITION

I chose the Sf Deltas Football Club for this rebranding project. It was a good opportunity to make them look more recognizable as a football club. The logo concept came from the windmill in ocean beach where they trained everyday. The waves represent the ocean, red symbolizes the iconic Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco, and circular logos are popular among established football clubs. This new logo portrays their statusa professional football club.
