Celebrate Success! 2012

his year marks the 17th anniversary of the Saskatoon Achievement in Business Excellence (SABEX) Awards as part of the Celebrate Success! Awards Gala. These awards honour businesses in our community that exemplify top business performance, quality, and achievement across several award categories and include the presentations of the SABEX Awards, the Award of Innovation, the Strategic Alliance Award, Community Leadership Award, and the Business for Peace Award. This year’s award winners will be honoured at the 2012 Celebrate Success! Awards Gala on May 17th, 2012 at Prairieland Park. Over the years, this event has become a prestigious evening that takes many hours of planning and dedication. The committee works hard to incorporate the business awards program of the long standing SABEX Awards with the glamour of a high profile celebrity event. This year’s event theme is based on the look and feel of vintage Sinatra and the “Rat Pack” era. Join us on May 17th to see who takes home the hardware!

“Being a SABEX Award recipient has given us great exposure in the Saskatoon business community. The media attention we have received due to these prestigious awards has helped reinforce our brand and image, driven increased traffic to our boutique and has contributed to our overall success”.

“Chambers of Commerce worldwide have long championed the relationship between peace and business. Business deals are sealed with a handshake, and lasting business relationships are created when handshakes are made in good faith between partners desiring mutual benefits for one another.” -International Chamber of Commerce

The Greater Saskatoon Chamber of Commerce proudly joins the International Chamber of Commerce and the Business for Peace Foundation in selecting an area nominee for the prestigious global Business for Peace Awards. Chambers of Commerce worldwide have always promoted the benefit of peace through trade. In today’s complex world, building strong and lasting business relationships are more important than ever, and such relationships are best established through mutually rewarding ethical business practices. The inaugural Awards were given for the first time in 2009 in Oslo, Norway - the home of the Nobel Peace Prize, with honorees chosen by a prestigious Award Committee consisting of past Nobel Prize winners in Peace and Economy. The 2009 Business for Peace Awards were given to seven outstanding business people from China, the Middle East, Africa, Europe and the USA. This year, ICC and local chambers of commerce will be assisting in the global nomination process through searching for outstanding business people who have been able to achieve material business success while acting in an ethically responsible manner. The 2009 recipients ranged from the founder of a seed company in Uganda to a Chinese entrepreneur at the edge of renewable energy technologies. The president of General Electric, Jeff Immelt, was also honored for showing how a multinational corporation can meet and embrace the tougher ethical demands of today. The aim of the global nomination process is to accelerate the development of ethical business practices through increasing awareness of the strengths of the ethical business case. The vision is to inspire and encourage business people to foster peace and stability to the benefit of humanity.   The Greater Saskatoon Chamber of Commerce is proud to be joining in the worldwide search for next year’s Business for Peace Honorees. 2012 Hall of Fame Inductee

Ken Achs Ken Achs, a sports enthusiast, former drag racer and inductee to the Canadian Motorsport Hall of Fame has a life-long association with Saskatchewan. While he is an international developer and holds major business interests outside the province, he has continued to maintain a strong Saskatchewan presence with the corporate headquarters, his residence and significant business activity in the City of Saskatoon. After the successful operation of his own automobile parts and auto body business, Ken Achs established Mid-West Development Corp. and began the business of developing, constructing, marketing and managing properties in the Saskatchewan market. Mid-West rapidly expanded its operations in the commercial and residential sectors. In 1980, Ken Achs established Nexus Holdings Inc. to develop and retain commercial properties. Both Mid-West and Nexus were established as 100% Saskatchewan-owned and -operated companies and continue in that tradition, notwithstanding the major expansion of the Mid—West Group, now encompassing several companies to other jurisdictions. The automotive division has also expanded to include Mid-West Meidl Collision. The corporate group headquarters, like its principal, remain in Saskatchewan. Over the years, the names Mid-West and Ken Achs have become well respected in the development and construction industry. Ken’s hands-on approach to every aspect of his business ensures quality control of all projects developed for resale or for the Nexus portfolio of MidWest properties. As a major holder of commercial property in Saskatchewan, under the watchful eye of its principal, Mid-West has worked to develop not only quality structures, but much of the character of Saskatoon, both historic and modern.

The Cupcake Conspiracy The Cupcake Conspiracy opened its doors in the beautifully restored King George building in downtown Saskatoon in November of 2009. We specialize in peanut and tree nut free cupcakes for business functions, weddings, birthdays and every day indulgences. We taste tested, tweaked recipes and worked hard to find our favourites. We currently offer 17 flavours every day in the store in addition to the flavour of the week. We’ve added several new flavours in the past year due to customer demand. The cupcakes are all made fresh daily from scratch. We’re firm believers that quality is very important and customers will never get a day old cupcake at our shop. We try to forecast the correct number but some days we’re off a little bit and have extra cupcakes. Leftovers get donated to local charities including The Friendship Inn, Ronald McDonald House, EGADZ, and the Crisis Nursery. Our marketing goal is to increase sales each year in the next few years by 15%. We capture the target market by using social media and other non-traditional media forms to market our products and services. This is a unique approach in Saskatoon and has been working extremely well for us. We’ve hired several new staff members and are looking to be expand to a second location in the next five years. Our goal is to remain local. We want to ensure the quality of our products and believe this will be done by keeping the operation within the city of Saskatoon. We’re excited to be a part of the downtown core and are looking forward to a bright future in Saskatoon.

Flaman Group of Companies The Flaman Group of Companies is a Saskatchewan based company with 5 divisions: agriculture, trailers, rentals, grain cleaning and fitness equipment. With 10 corporate stores, over 100 rental dealers and 30 fitness dealers in Canada, Flaman is a strong and growing company. The Flaman Group of Companies was started in 1959 by Frank Flaman on his farm in Southey, SK. When he needed to purchase some grain bins he decided to purchase a larger quantity to qualify for dealer pricing. These grain bins were rolled into a tidy profit and the Flaman Group of Companies was off and running. As Flaman grew so did the needs of their customers, this lead to the creation of each division. The foundation of the company was agriculture but soon customers wanted more. Each division serves a unique need and market segment. Over the course of Flaman’s over 50 year history, the Flaman name has become synonymous with quality products, reasonable prices, and outstanding customer service. Through steady expansion and innovation, the company has transformed from a rural-based reseller of grain bins that operated off of the family homestead, to a Western Canadian retail powerhouse, with locations across the prairies, a vast and diversified product fine, and an ever growing base of loyal and valued customers. The Flaman Group of Companies is a company founded in Saskatchewan, family owned and operated and rooted in Saskatchewan family values. These values are what drive’s Flaman - customer responsibility, achievement of sales and making things better.

SABEX Environmental Sustainability Award

Sun Country Farms Sun Country Farms, owned by Kent Rathwell, is a bird food manufacturing facility in Langham, SK which produces 15 millions pounds of birdseed each year. It also markets bird feeders made from recycled materials. Sun Country Farms focuses on environmentally sustainable methods by purchasing wind generated energy to operate their bird food manufacturing plant and encouraging responsible business practices to protect the natural habitat of the bird population.

Confederation Inn The Confederation Inn is a full service hotel with 42 guest rooms, a large restaurant, and a banquet room that is capable of hosting groups of up to 300 people. Sustainability became an area of focus after the Inn was purchased in 2006 by Brian Sawatzky, a former science teacher. He is highly motivated to provide normal hotel services (to house, feed, and entertain clients), while at the same time, keeping the welfare of future generations in mind. In practice, this means lowering the Inn’s greenhouse gas emissions and resource use as much as possible, while also maintaining the clients’ comfort. Not only is there a large “feel good” effect from doing business in this way, but a “green” business strategy is also accompanied by real, tangible results of reduced natural gas, electricity, and water/sewer bills. Therefore, adopting sustainability as a central value has reduced environmental impacts and helped the Inn’s bottom line. The Confederation Inn is truly a unique business in Saskatoon, having placed sustainability at the heart of all that it does. The sheer volume and variety of ways their employees have found to lower their greenhouse gas emissions showcases what it possible and has positioned them as leaders in the community. They are truly “early adopters” of new and creative ways to reduce greenhouse gas emissions through reductions in natural gas, electricity, water, and waste.

Sarcan Recycling Sarcan Recycling is a division of the Saskatchewan Association of Rehabilitation Centres (SARC) and was set up to handle the non-refillable beverage container recycling contract in Saskatchewan. In May 1988, SARC was awarded the exclusive contract to collect and recycle non-refillable beverage containers in Saskatchewan. Previously, only refillable containers were allowed in the province. SARC established its recycling division Sarcan, which began with 32 depots set up in its original Member Agencies. Initially, only soft drink and beer cans were recycled under a deposit system that provided a five cent refund on each can. The system has expanded to include all ready-to-serve beverages packed in aluminum, bi-metal (steel) and all types of plastic and glass non-refillable containers, milk containers, used paint and obsolete electronics. Sarcan operates 71 receiving depots throughout Saskatchewan, two processing centres and one administrative office. They employ over 600 adults of whom 70% are persons with disabilities or persons previously receiving social assistance. This results in a reduction of more than $1.5 million annually in social assistants payments, which is an added benefit to the province. All of Sarcan’s employees earn competitive wages as well as benefits and a pension plan. As Sarcan expands with new initiatives such as milk containers, used paint and obsolete electronics, so too does their workforce. They look forward to Sarcan’s future growth and opportunities for employment.

Christie’s Il Secondo Christies Mayfair Bakery opened for business on 33rd Street in Saskatoon in 1932 and has been operating as a bakery for over 80 years. The Muzzolini family has been operating the business for the last 50 years As the bakery continued to become busier and busier, customers asked for an east side location. Expansion was a goal of Tracey and Blair’s, along with having a larger seating area to offer authentic Napoletana style pizza and a genuine Italian experience, thus in 2010 Christies ll Secondo was opened on Broadway and 10th Street. The name ll Secondo has dual meaning; it was Christies’ second location and it also was the vision of the second generation of Muzzolini’s, Tracey and Blair. Since opening, Christies ll Secondo has seen tremendous success and many of the company’s initial goals have already been met validating the decision to expand as well as the direction and philosophy of the company. Christies Bakery tries to be a big part of the community it serves through support of community events, education of customers and staff. Educating staff and aspiring bakers is a big part of the company’s mandate, as Tracey teaches many classes across Canada and the USA for the Bread Baker’s Guild of America. Aspiring bakers come to Christies where they gather valuable experience and education. Giving knowledge back to these people helps further the quality of people in the baking industry.
