“Chambers of Commerce worldwide have long championed the relationship between peace and business. Business deals are sealed with a handshake, and lasting business relationships are created when handshakes are made in good faith between partners desiring mutual benefits for one another.” -International Chamber of Commerce

The Greater Saskatoon Chamber of Commerce proudly joins the International Chamber of Commerce and the Business for Peace Foundation in selecting an area nominee for the prestigious global Business for Peace Awards. Chambers of Commerce worldwide have always promoted the benefit of peace through trade. In today’s complex world, building strong and lasting business relationships are more important than ever, and such relationships are best established through mutually rewarding ethical business practices. The inaugural Awards were given for the first time in 2009 in Oslo, Norway - the home of the Nobel Peace Prize, with honorees chosen by a prestigious Award Committee consisting of past Nobel Prize winners in Peace and Economy. The 2009 Business for Peace Awards were given to seven outstanding business people from China, the Middle East, Africa, Europe and the USA. The 2010 nominees came from United Kingdom, USA, Israel, Mexico, Malaysia, India and Nigeria. This year, ICC and local chambers of commerce will be assisting in the global nomination process through searching for outstanding business people who have been able to achieve material business success while acting in an ethically responsible manner. The 2009 recipients ranged from the founder of a seed company in Uganda to a Chinese entrepreneur at the edge of renewable energy technologies. The president of General Electric, Jeff Immelt, was also honored for showing how a multinational corporation can meet and embrace the tougher ethical demands of today. The aim of the global nomination process is to accelerate the development of ethical business practices through increasing awareness of the strengths of the ethical business case. The vision is to inspire and encourage business people to foster peace and stability to the benefit of humanity.   The Greater Saskatoon Chamber of Commerce is proud to be joining in the worldwide search for next year’s Business for Peace Honorees. Urban Donlevy and the Donlevy Family As Entrepreneurial leaders in Saskatoon, Urban Donlevy and the Donlevy family have created a number of leading edge and innovative Saskatchewan based companies over the last 60 years. The Donlevy family began their entrepreneurial endeavors with Mercury Graphics. All six children found themselves growing up in and helping out with the family business. This instilled the familiy’s entrepreneurial spirit. Not long after graduating from The University of Saskatchewan, Ryerson University and Harvard University, Urban purchased the family company and embarked upon a corporate innovation strategy that created a series of leading edge specialized business entities. Subsequent to the sale of Mercury Graphics to the employees, Urban continued with varied entrepreneurial interests. Growing up with the family patriarch involved in the Cosmo Club, the Donlevy family instilled the family value of community betterment in their children. This value was expressed by Urban, as he became a part of many different volunteer organizations within Saskatoon. Urban led the team that started the first Kinsmen Telemiracle in 1977. Since being a part of the founding of Telemiracle, Urban continued in the Saskatoon and Saskatchewan volunteer community with various leadership positions including the Saskatchewan Prevention Institute, and St. Paul’s Hospital Foundation and board. Urban and the Donlevy families continue to prove their resilient entrepreneurial spirit and sense of community contribution. The Greater Saskatoon Chamber of Commerce and the Celebrate Success! Committee congratulate Urban Donlevy, and the Donlevy Family on their commitment to Saskatoon and the Saskatoon Business Community. Their contributions have made Saskatoon and Saskatchewan better.

All leftovers are donated to local charities including the Friendship Inn, Ronald McDonald House, EGADZ and the Crisis Nursery. Every Thursday, the Cupcake Conspiracy hosts the fundraiser Cupcakes & Dreams where cupcake prices are dropped to $2.25 and icing shots are $1. The VerEco home was designed by Dr. Rob Bumont, an internationally recognized green home consultant and a team of engineers, architects, builders and trades people from Saskatchewan and across the country.

Sarcan Recycling Sarcan Recycling is a division of the Saskatchewan Association of Rehabilitation Centres (SARC) and was set up to handle the non-refillable beverage container recycling contract in Saskatchewan. In May 1988, SARC was awarded the exclusive contract to collect and recycle non-refillable beverage containers in Saskatchewan. Previously, only refillable containers were allowed in the province. SARC established its recycling division Sarcan, which began with 32 depots set up in its original Member Agencies. Initially, only soft drink and beer cans were recycled under a deposit system that provided a five cent refund on each can. The system has expanded to include all ready-to-serve beverages packed in aluminum, bi-metal (steel) and all types of plastic and glass non-refillable containers, milk containers, used paint and obsolete electronics. Sarcan operates 71 receiving depots throughout Saskatchewan, two processing centres and one administrative office. They employ over 600 adults of whom 70% are persons with disabilities or persons previously receiving social assistance. This results in a reduction of more than $1.5 million annually in social assistants payments, which is an added benefit to the province. All of Sarcan’s employees earn competitive wages as well as benefits and a pension plan. As Sarcan expands with new initiatives such as milk containers, used paint and obsolete electronics, so too does our workforce. They look forward to Sarcan’s future growth and opportunities for employment.

The Cupcake Conspiracy The Cupcake Conspiracy was started by cousins and best friends, Kim and Christian Butcher. Their doors opened in the beautifully restored King George Hotel in November of 2009. They specialize in peanut and tree nut free cupcakes for business functions, weddings and every day indulgences. After Kim and Christian traveled the world they saw an opportunity and niche in Saskatoon for the Cupcake Conspiracy. Every recipe has been tested, tweaked and perfected to find favorites. Currently, 17 flavors are offered daily, including an additional flavor of the week. The cupcakes are made fresh daily from scratch. The Cupcake Conspiracy firmly believes quality is very important and customers will never get a day old cupcake. All net proceeds are donated to local and national charities. The marketing goal for the next few years is to increase sales by 15% and expand to a second location. This goal is being met by using social media to market their products and services. This is a unique approach in Saskatoon and it has been working extremely well for the Cupcake Conspiracy. The goal is to remain local by buying from local vendors and keeping the operations within the city.

Wine 4 You Wine 4 You is a retail store selling wine and beer kits, and in-store wine and beer making service. Customers choose a wine or beer kit, pay for the kit and the service, perform a few easy steps to start making the process, and return in a few weeks to bottle their finished product. Wine 4 You takes care of the rest of the process. The wine belongs to the customer and Wine 4 You supplies the expertise and equipment to care for it. With each kit producing 30 bottles of wine, it’s a great way of having wine on hand for special occasions or quiet evenings at home. Wine 4 You has been open for little over one year. The in-store wine making service they provide for customers is a new unproven idea in Saskatchewan. It is possible to make excellent wine with little effort and wine lovers are discovering that Wine 4 You is the best place to make their wine. Wine 4 You is open, inviting and a beautiful place to make and buy wine kits. A stunning glass wall runs the length of the room revealing wines in various stages of production. The immaculate environment is an instant reminder of the importance of cleanliness to the wine making process and a testimony to the attention given to each wine order. Known as a destination for high quality wine and exceptional service, Wine 4 You is the first place people think of when deciding to make wine.

Text2Car Saskatoon residents know plenty about the cold Canadian winters. Text2Car allows you to get into a warm car miles away. The same goes for air conditioning on those hot summer days. 18 years ago Vince Hardy and his wife moved to downtown Winnipeg and had to park their car in an old converted barn house about two streets away out of car starter reach. Hardy drove his car to a service bay, told the technicians to take the vibrating motor out of a numeric pager that was in inventory and connect the wires to the existing car starter He went to his office phone and dialed the pager, within seconds his car started! The idea was great but it never took off until constant urging from his wife and new technologies did Hardy decide to create Text2Car. It allows you two send a message to start your car just before the movie or hockey game ends! The vehicle-installed Text2Car device is the size of a deck of cards and has a built in GPS receiver. The receiver allows for additional features such as mobile and online vehicle location maps and will tell you if your teenager is speeding via text messages to your phone. Also, alarm text messages are received in case of theft or a break-in. The device works in any vehicle and Text2Car offers free unlimited to-vehicle commands for the first year.

Innovative Residential Since 2008, Innovative Residential has become Saskatoon’s largest private sector provider of affordable ownership housing. The company has implemented radical new modular construction techniques while developing unique home owner assistance programs in partnership with all levels of government. Innovative Residential has been recognized as an expert in the field with best practices that are now among the most successful in Canada. Representative from the three levels of government, major financial institutions and numerous private and community-based organizations have recognized the company’s commitment to excellence in an area of the market that has been under served. The ability to provide affordable home ownership to low and moderate income residents is reinforced by a continuous ability to adjust to an ever changing environment. This market has been neglected by traditional developers, but Innovative Residential has realized explosive growth by capitalizing on this untapped segment. In the past four years, Innovative Residential has expanded from four employees to more than 70. This growth has been achieved while meeting one of Saskatoon’s greatest needs by providing homes for approximately 600 people in just the past two years. Innovative Residential provides an unprecedented level of customer support in an area typically reserved for government and non-profit agencies. Providing these key support services has lead to strong relationships within the government and the community, and this has provided a solid foundation for the company to implement a family of financial assistance programs unlike any other company in Canada. Notably, they have been recognized at the national level for the relocation and renovation of 78 units at McNab Park.

They are the primary sponsor for various races like the Saskatchewan Marathon, and plan race events like the Broadway Mile, the Brainfreeze Half Marathon. They also offer various running clinics. Being a full service running store, Brainsport offers consumers a variety of products, including running shoes, racing flats, track spikes, running apparel, electronics and nutritional supplements. Brian Michasiw opened Brainsport in the summer of 1991 for two reasons: His passion for running and the desire to share this knowledge on to consumers and to offer to people a place where they could find a shoe that fit their foot correctly. Brainsport also operates its sister store Pedestrian, located at 702 Broadway Avenue, which is a shoe boutique of fashionable shoes, hikers, sandals and orthopedic shoes. By having two stores that serve different needs of people Brainsport has been able to diversify its business model to target a larger market segment. Sponsoring the community events and groups such as Bridge City Boogie, Saskatoon Track and Field Club and the University of Saskatchewan’s Cross Country Running Team, Brainsport is committed to community. Wednesday July 13, 2011 will mark the 20th Anniversary of Brainsport and the 1000th Free Run Club. From the beginning as a small running store that could barely survive to growing into Saskatoon’s centre for running events, Brainsport has grown leaps and bounds and is a genuine Saskatoon success story of entrepreneurial spirit.
