Romans called it Serdika, in the Middle Ages it was Sredec, ant it got its current name in the Turkish times, after the famous church dedicated to the Supreme Wisdom. A walk through the centre of this city is like descending into the depths, through many cultural layers: Thracians, Roman, Byzantine, Slavic, Ottoman, New Bulgarian...
