Our Belgium dealer, Jean Luc Claerens took us to an exciting estate in Metz, France. In the hen house I discovered an armoire that had been used to store horse harnesses. We discovered on the inside of the doors authentic racing results for two horses. We asked our craftsmen to make an exact replica, including the race records!

In 1969 Rudy van Thiel Sr. opened his first antique store in Delft, Holland. Almost 40 years later he and his son, Rudy Jr., operate one of the world’s largest sources for decorative antiques, vintage furniture, and one-of-a-kind items. Today, van Thiel & Co.’s focus is on finding and restoring decorative and functional items in styles ranging from country to elegant. Both father and son personally travel the world to buy unique “found items” and antiques. (We’ve included some interesting stories about their product searches on the following pages.) The van Thiel’s finds are shipped from their consolidation warehouses in Hungary, England, France, Holland and Egypt to the company’s unique 150,000 square foot restoration facility in Beijing, China. There, 250 craftsmen, each in his own workshop, carefully and tastefully restore and refurbish each piece using European materials and the accumulated know-how of famous European artisans. To ensure first-class quality, all restoration work is done under the personal supervision of the van Thiel family. Due to the nature of this program, many of the selections shown in this section of the catalog are available in limited quantities. Each item has its own unique personality and there will be slight variations in finish and size. We are proud to present this interesting resource exclusively to Sarreid customers through our partnership with van Thiel & Company. Tel: 252-291-1414

“The top must be somewhere”, Mr. Percy told me, stumbling through his packed storage space in Bury St Edmunds, England in 2002. The top, that is, of the bookcase he’d bought over 32 years before. Later in the day he found the top and I bought the completed bookcase. I liked it so much that we asked our antique restorers to make a replica.

Both cabinets came from a house clearing in Bixley, England. The cabinets must have been used in a store, since we found a large one filled with hundreds of dolls and two identical single door cabinets with great, intriguing blue interiors. Fortunately these were not filled with dolls. We liked them so much that we asked our great craftsmen to make an exact replica, including the blue color.

I visit Monsieur Bernard Heitzman every 6 weeks to buy almost his entire assortment of anything old you can imagine. In a village near Bourg en Bresse he bought a 19th century armoire in a great color and the interior still had the original wallpaper lining. We liked it so much we asked our restorers to prepare an exact replica.

I opened the door of a tiny store near Mechelen, Belgium and my heart started pounding. Madamme de Waveren had just bought a magnificent, early 19th century cabinet with rare turned shelf supports. She was not pleased that the piece she carried in two days ago was to go so soon. We made a replica with special gliders to create a great TV cabinet.

A. 24030 HOW TO IMPROVE YOUR FRENCH CABINET I notice an early 19th century Louis XV bonnetiere at a flea market near Joigny in Burgundy. Madame Verot asked a reasonable price but kept asking me about “un jumeaux” and finally I agreed. Just as I was leaving she pushed me in her truck to show me a mirror image of the same cabinet, which was supposedly included in the deal. At home I looked “le Jumeaux” up in the dictionary...twins! We liked it so much that we asked our great craftsmen to make an exact replica.

The Vrijdagsmarkt in Antwerp, Belgium has been an open auction for over 400 years. Among many other things the clothes of Rubens were sold here after his death in 1640. So it is there that we bought in 1996 a great 19th century pharmacy cabinet. We liked it so much that we asked our great craftsmen to make an exact replica in a double version, and had the patina copied by our antique restorers. The market is still there every Friday. Just do not buy your own cabinet!

If you don’t want to open the entire window but still want fresh air, just add a bunch of small windows! I found this amazing pair while climbing over piles of doors & windows in a wreckers yard in Auxerre, France. It was from the mid 19th century and I’d never seen one with so many hinges and windows. We used the set to make a great piece which turned out so well we asked our craftsmen to make an exact replica.

The bookcase was standing on the third floor of an old mansion near Verviers, Belgium. It was almost 11 feet high. How in the world did they ever get it out of the house! We struggled for 11 hours, so we had to add lots of sweat equity to the price! Now it is standing in our kitchen. It is such a great piece! If you have a high ceiling (not necessarily on the third floor), you will never regret buying it...

“Oh! It is so narrow since it had to fit between the kitchen door and the Aga stove, love!” I could not believe it, but the cabinet Mrs. Aberstone was selling at the Ipswich flea market in 1989 came out of her grandmother’s kitchen. It had been standing for over one hundred and fifty years, cozy and warm right next to the stove! We bought it, kept it in the family, and asked our great craftsmen to make an exact replica.

Rule number one for antique dealers: never buy at auction if you have not seen the item in viewing. In a small auction room in Lyon, France nobody was bidding for this great 19th century bedroom set, which included a fabulous armoire. Forget the rules: raise your hand and buy! It was the finest armoire and we decided to make an exact replica.

“Do you like my gentleman’s wardrobe, lad?” Once you are in the hands of an Irish tinker, there is only one escape... Buy! Every time you try to get an agreement on one item they add another. So, in order to buy a great, over 150-years-old wardrobe, I had to buy nesting tables, Regency bed steps, a bottle stand, and a cheval mirror. Well, I have to say I like the Irish and the wardrobe came out great. So great that we asked our best cabinetmaker to make an exact replica.

Emmanuel loves to stroll through our warehouses of unrestored antiques. He has a great eye and great ideas. Twice a year he selects antiques, telling us how to restore them and what to change. That’s how he picked a 19th century Bacon cabinet with a great old bleached patina. And typically, when Emmanuel saw a bucket filled with almost 100 year old keys my father bought in Spain, a new hardware look was born! We liked it so much that we’ve made an exact replica. Thanks Emmanuel!

Buying antiques in India means having to deal with some very wealthy guys. They control the market and a network of small pickers. We approached some of them directly and they were surprised and hesitant. After years of work, keeping promises and building up friendship, we succeeded in buying direct from them. The places we go are not romantic and soon we got the name “the back street boys”. We a bought a pair of 19th century court yard doors and had our craftsmen create an armiore.

David Chester took me to an old school just outside of Sheffield, England. In the kitchen, I discovered a custom made 19th century kitchen island, complete with marble insert. Monsieur Pasqual, an 80 years old dealer near Dijon, France bought the serving stand out of Brasserie la Choulette. He had lunch there for 53 years. An early 19th century table de cuisine, probably holding in the past great polished copper casseroles. “I will pay now and pick it up in an hour,” I said to Monsiuer Bersaut at the flea market in Lille. Someone must have overheard me because when I returned the Louis XVI style French Bahut was already “collected”. Lille has one long street so I called two other dealers and started looking. An hour later we found the sideboard tucked behind a car. Since then I always leave a code name for the goods to be collected. We liked it so much we had our great craftsmen make an exact replica.

On Friday I visit them to see their bounty which usually entails bargaining for an hour, loading for twenty minutes & wine drinking for two hours. People really underestimate my job. In 1987 we discovered a small antiques shop out of a barn in Sauillieux, France. We bought a superb, over 230 years old solid walnut “bahut” in Burgundian style. I would not call it cheating. On the contrary, some dealers are so creative that the results can be great. I am talking about using great old parts to build a new piece of furniture. 23391 THE “THAT THING” THING PINE 5 FIXED SHELVES 24”w x 19”d x 60”h

I bought “that thing” at the flea market in Lille, Northern France. I had no idea what it was but liked the shape and old patina. We used it for years as a side table. Two years ago I found a photo in a Scandinavian book and I learned it was a kind of step ladder. Do not use it for that purpose! But put one on each side of your sofa.

I did not realize what great things I had bought when I made an offer, in 1997, on the content of a storage place near Lyon, France. When we started emptying the place we found the original rack in bits and pieces. One of our restorers put it carefully together and we liked it so much that we asked him to make this exact replica as well.

24017 GARLIC TABLE SOLID ELM WOODEN TOP WITH DECORATIVE LEGS 91”w x 20”d x 31”h

I had to take a deep breath on the farmers market near Camaresa in Catalonia, Spain. The huge pile of fresh garlic was impressive, but the table underneath was breath-taking. I could not believe I was looking at an early 18th century tresetle table with fine, detailed carving, being used as an Ajo stand. It took me a while to convince Senor Paletta to sell the table, and I had to wait until market was over. We liked it so much, we asked our craftsmen to make an exact replica.

Lesson number one in our family: “Do not always believe the auctioneer’s story”. I didn’t think that lot 147 was a 150-years-old table, or that it was Scandinavian. I was pretty sure it was made of old wood and four 19th century columns. It didn’t really matter, it was a great table, the price wa fair, and I was happy to buy it. Actually we liked it so much that we asked our great craftsmen to make an exact copy.

On my way to a flea market near Salamanco in 2002 I stopped at a farm to buy some home made olive oil. Signora Agueda was selecting olives but I was more interested in the table she was working on. Some French cabinetmakers in the late 19th century had a real sense of humor. They started making furniture with a smile - to get you over your morning grumpiness (which according to my wife I need). Over 30 years ago I bought my first chest in this style on a trip through France. Later I bought more of them and also collected photos. So I asked one of our best craftsmen to make an an exact replica in this happy style. Put it in your bedroom and you’ll wake up with a smile!

Buying antiques in Sweden is a special job. Although I speak Dutch I still do not understand one word of what they say. The Dutch word tafel (table) is bord in Swedish, and bord in Dutch is a plate. A chest of drawers in Swedish is Byra, but if you order a Byra in Holland you get a nice cold Heineken! Anyway, I was very excited when I bought an early 19th century chest of drawers in Gustavian style. We liked it so much that we asked our craftsmen to make an exact replica.

24746 THE SWEDISH LESSON CHEST SOLID ELM 43”w x 15”d x 37”h

Back in 2007 I hesitated when I saw the charming little armadietto in Signora Tancia’s antique store near Pescara, Italy. The patina was obviously wrong, a dark brown paint probably from the fifties. But the cabinet itself was definitely older. The paint helped me get a low price and when the cabinet arrived in our workshops it turned out to be early 19th century. We liked it so much that we asked our great craftsmen to make an exact replica... without the paint!

I bought the cabinet off the truck of Monsieur Buzas in the French Jura. It was 19th century, in faux bamboo style made of elm and pitch pine. Later we discovered a love letter dated 1878 behind the drawers. We kept the chest and the letter in the family and later decided to make an exact replica.

Inspired by the simple lodge style popularized by Queen Victoria at her Scottish Highland estate, this chest is made of antique pine trimmed with hand carved pilasters and bun feet. My french gypsy network informs me twice a year that a house with antique parquet floors will be demolished. That means go there fast, make a deal and remove every piece of solid wood by hand. The floors are often 150 years old. A special team of great antique restorers makes them into table tops, each of them with a unique character.

23079 ALL THE CREDIT TO THE FLORIST TABLE IRON FRAME W/SOLID WOOD TOP 59”w x 39”d x 20”h

The idea to make tables out of brick maker’s boards came not from us but from a great florist on the Kloosterstraat in Antwerp, Belgium. The problem was then to find the brick boards! It was a lucky break when I saw a pile of 700 of them last April behind a barn near Waremme. Each board is now hand cleaned with a custom made base.

Every village in France has its annual attic sale. Selling is less important than socializing. While drinking my share at the puce, I noticed a great top of an over 100 years old butcher block. I made an offer which was accepted only if I added in two glasses of wine. Our craftsmen made an exact copy and added a low base to create this great table.

25756 THE FORTY POUND AND SIX OUNCE TABLE IRON BLACK VERSION 51”w x 31”d x 16”h

My father and I have good brakes and rear view mirrors on our cars. We stop anywhere we think we can discover something old and unique, scrap metal yards included. So in 2006, on the road from Leeds to Newcastle, I noticed a pile of iron things. Mr. Thungsham explained to me that a foundry used them in the 30’s, casting train parts. To get a price, he put one on the scales, the first furniture I ever bought by weight. We liked them so much that we asked our blacksmith to make an exact replica.

It’s amazing that from time to time we can still find these over 80 years old hand made flour bins, with the original hand wrought handles. It was fun to come up with the idea of adding a custom made iron base and hand cut glass top to convert them into a great collectors cocktail table.

21341 COCKTAIL TABLE WITH GLASS MADE OF AN OVER 80 YEARS OLD TROUGH HANDMADE METAL FRAME, GLASS TOP 58”w x 29”d x 22”h

Almost weekly I come to the front gate of our Beijing facility to see a small truck, loaded down with great antiques. The dealers sometimes travel 800 miles or more to gather a load of fantastic over 100 years old furniture. It’s all unloaded and then it takes an hour to agree on a price. That’s how I bought a great 19th century daybed. We carefully restored it, and since the matting was in poor condition, replaced it with an iron sheet. This replica makes a great cocktail table.

25742 THE ANTIQUES BY THE TRUCKLOAD TABLE

It took three days to empty the house on Old Newton Road just outside Glastonbury, England. The attic was the biggest job. It was so packed that we had to gamble making our final offer, not knowing what we would find. One of hundreds of surprises was an old colonial trunk, over 130 years old, filled with an entire Marklin train set. We sold the train, but kept the trunk, making it into a great coffee table. We liked it so much that we asked our craftsmen to make a replica.

My guess is that this stand, which I bought as a pair, was made to support a long wooden top, and that the combination was used in a colonial kitchen a hundred years ago. With all the antiques we buy, almost every week, you sometimes have no clue what the item is. More important is that the exact replicas of the originals make great end tables, so don’t worry about what they were, just enjoy them.

25197 VINTAGE SIDE TABLE SOLID ELM 23”w x 16”d x 30”h

To buy a good mid 19th century table with fine carving and original patina in the Fujian province of China is no longer easy. I was lucky to buy the original three years ago. But the real lucky part is to work with the craftsmen in our workshops who can make an exact replica with the right patina. Just give them a week or so and some fine reclaimed wood and they will do it!

“Elle est belle”. That’s how Monsieur Posart described in 1998 an 18th century solid walnut “table ecrivant”. He was right; the table was incredibly elegant with rare, fine carved legs. “Elle est belle” sounds better as “hot legs”!

24040 HOT LEGS WRITING TABLE SOLID WALNUT, IRON CABRIOLE LEGS, ONE DRAWER 51”w x 28”d x 31”h

To make a good wrought iron base in combination with cast brass ornaments is not easy. We worked for years to create a unique forging department, bought all kinds of antique samples and found the best craftsmen available. In addition, we go to Hungary and France to buy over 100 years old floorboards to make a top worthy of the base. We hope you will enjoy the result for many years!

The French call it a table bascule? The tilt-top table was used in wine cellars when the vigneron was tasting. After use the top was folded and the table put against the cave wall. Unfortunately they are difficult to fine nowadays. Therefore we took an original and asked our antique restorers to make an exact replica.

Bamboo was incredibly en vogue in the Victorian Europe. Shiploads of canes were imported to Paris and London for tables, halls stands and curio cabinets. The trend trickled down to the lower classes who created bamboo inspired pieces. In 2003 I purchased this table from a dealer in Ispwich. A Blacksmith must have been inspired a a hundred years ago by Asian spirits. We like it so much that we asked out great craftsman to make an exact replica.

‘Not for Sale’ signs always entice us to make an offer. So we were lucky enough to convince the lady in a small store near Seine Maritime in the Haut Normandy to sell us a fantastic, late 18th century solid walnut table in Louis XVI style, complete with the original white marble top. We are proud to have such good craftsmen that they were able to make an exact replica which ‘is’ for sale!

We still travel many old colonies to find great antiques and love to see the Spanish, Portuguese, Dutch and English influences. On my first antique buying trip to India in 1978, I was surprised to find an almost 150 years old serving table in an English regency style. The table stayed in our family for years and we recently asked our great craftsmen to make an exact replica using the exact same tools used to craft the original one hundred fifty years ago.

25747 THE “TABLE WITH A STORY” TABLE ELM WOOD FINISH 36”w x 17”d x 34”h On my last 2008 trip to Sweden Mr. Arnborg had a mystery table. What was it? A)plant stand, B)cake stand, C)store table. Well? None of the above! Mr. Arnborg explained to me the stand on top of the table was used to hold five candlesticks for reading or needlework during the long, dark winters. We liked it so much that we asked our great craftsmen to make an exact replica.

25758 THE FUNNY TABLE ELM WOOD FINISH 18”w x 14”d x 29”h

It was a funny table with a twist that I bought on a flea market in Montceau les Mines in the French Burgundy in 2003. Never had seen one before so Monsieur Gravin explained to me it was made in the 20’s for the local flower store. He had four of them, all different heights. We liked it so much that we asked our blacksmith to make an exact replica. It took him a while to figure out how to do the twist!

After more than 40 years of antique buying you are still often surprised by what you find. Look at this funny table that Rudy Jr. bought in 1998 near Tianjin. It’s an over one hundred year old colonial table with great turned legs and stretchers. We liked it so much that we asked our best restorers to make an exact replica and copy the great patina. Put them as a pair in front of your sofa, they’ll look great!

A lot of our designs we could never make if we didn’t have the original. Like this incredible elegant early 19th century hexagonal table. I bought it in 2003 on an auction in Amsterdam and it will always keep its history secret. We liked is so much that we asked our great craftsmen to make an exact replica.

I am always amazed to see our blacksmith forging a flat piece of steel into the most incredible shapes. So when I showed him a photo of an 18th century bell bracket and a little sketch of a table, he handed me his hammer staring at me like: “why don’t you try it yourself ”. The base is inspired by 19th century French provincial tables, all hand wrought iron. The top is made of 19th century recycled ceiling boards. In the early eighties, Francois Dumont convinced almost every bistro owner in the south of France to replace their wobbly, old tables with nice new ones. We loaded a truck with the old “worthless” hand-wrought ones, and exported them all over the world. We asked our black smith to make as exact replica of the one we have, in honor of Francois.

September is vendange time, when the farmers in our village harvest the grapes. Monsieur Scoteaux invites all the pickers and neighbors for a “petit vin” in the barn set with long tables and old benches. I found five of the same benches at a flea market in “our” Burgundy. We asked our antique restorers to make an exact replica.

Over the years we must have sold several hundred antique Dagobert chairs. The original was a folding campaign chair in solid bronze made by St. Kloy in the seventh century and improved by Abbe’ Suger in the 12th century. You can still see this chair in the Louvre in Paris. This one is a detailed replica of a chair I bought at an auction at Hotel des Ventes in Lyon, France in 2004. Our craftsmen did a great job. Dagobert would be proud.

We used a set of almost 80 years old radiators to create this crazy chair. Heating not included!

Sometimes an antique dealer’s heart starts pounding when he discovers a great piece behind a pile of junk. Do not show too much interest! Stay calm! In the case of this original piece it was not easy. The pile was in a barn near Lookeren, Belgium and hidden was an early 19th century wooden bench, probably from Sweden. We like to think that our poker faces helped in the bargaining. It was a real challenge of our antique restorers to make an exact replica, including the great finish!

On a buying trip in Hungary it poured rain for three days. I bought better shoes and the pair of stools I used when trying them on. They were almost 150 years old and hand decorated in the style of the area. We called them “the cute stools”. It took our best painter two weeks to find a way to make exact replicas of which he can be very proud!

Stools like this one are at least 60 years old. The hand made frames are covered with rattan peel. Traveling to villages I try to pick only the best ones. We carefully clean them leaving the great old patina.

It was fun to visit Mr. Vanderbruggen, a great antique restorer in the Dutch City of Haarlem. We could talk for hours about how to get a stain out of mahogany veneer or restore a gilded gesso mirror. Although almost 80 years young, he still surprised me when he announced his retirement. I bought his entire workshop, a great relief to him. I still have the little old bench he used for cutting wood, and I like it so much that we’ve made an exact replica. Thanks, Peter!

Antique and vintage furniture can be covered by many layers of paint, reflecting changing tastes and times. The trick is to carefully strip off the layers till you have reached (parts of ) the original paint. That’s exactly what happened to this old ceiling panel I bought in Bishop’s Stortford, East Anglia, England. We converted it into a mirror frame and liked it so much that we asked out great craftsmen to make an exact replica.

25744 THE GREAT STRIPPING ACT MIRROR

“C’est un glace tres charmante” declared Monsieur Adelais in 2001 at the Saint-Chamond flea market in France, referring to the mirror as if it were an attractive lady. That explains his sadness when I accepted his price and bought this great, late 17th century French mirror in Louis XV style. I loaded it up immediately so he could get over over his divorce fast. After restoration we liked it so much that we asked our great craftsmen to carve an exact replica out of solid wood!

Pierced fretwork like this was used a hundred years ago to decorate house-fronts in the North of Sweden. I bought five boards of it on my last trip near Hudiksval, Sweden. They cut all the woodwork by hand, in the same way as the Hudiksvaller carpenters a hundred years ago. We made a great mirror from it and liked it so much that we asked our antique restorers to make an exact replica.

Madame Scoteaux knocked at the door of our house in the French Burgundy asking if I wanted to buy a table and some other things in her barn. The table was OK, but the mirror we found was great! We liked it so much that we asked our carver to make an exact replica but the real challenge was to copy Madame Scoteaux’s paint job!

Signor Bartello used them to frame two doors in his almacen antiguo near Valladolid, Spain. Early 19th century pierced panels that almost two hundred years ago were used to decorate a house- front. He was surprised when I asked him for a price. He expected to sell everything but not these pieces of wood. I already knew they were going to make a fabulous mirror frame. We liked the final result so much that we asked our great antique restorers to make an exact replica.

My first office in the Postelstraat in Holland was a great 17th century building with huge beams and fireplaces. The owner collected hand blown glass, fantastic carvings, bronze mortars, the place was like a museum. I took pictures and notes and asked our restoration department to make a replica of a set of 17th century coat of arms shields.

23408 THE SURPRISE BOX RACKET ELM, LEATHER LEATHER HANDGRIP, SNARES OF ROPE 19”w x 3”d x 54”h

You can find the original 18th century Italian candle stand in the entrance of my uncle’s house. My father sold it for a bargain price to him, but after all he is a tax counselor, so you never know! Fortunately we asked our head blacksmith, who usually only restores old irom items, to make an exact replica.

Although we buy very seriously we still like to bid on surprise boxes at local auctions. The auctioneer throws everything he does not like in boxes and you can buy them in the blind. Sometimes we get lucky, like when a box included an over- sized racket. We asked our antique restorers to make an exact replica and the results are amazing!

How much is that old torn painting? I asked Madame Ponsart at 6am on the flea market of Clermont Ferant, France. The price was crazy low. OK, it was in bad shape, but still 18th century. I bought it and sent one of my men to pick it up. What a surprise when he returned with a great, almost 200 years old easel, which was included in the price. Forget the painting, it was the easel that was the bargain. We liked it so much that we’ve made an exact replica.

We were lucky in 1989 to buy a matching set of four French garden containers from a local flea market near Beaune in the French Burgundy. They are still in our garden in France and it was a friend who encouraged us to ask our craftsmen to make exact replicas. We recommend to put them inside for the winter.

22342 GARDEN FLOWER POT WOOD CONTAINER 19”w x 19”d x 26”h (size may vary)

Plants stands like this were very popular in France 200 years ago. They usually were filled up with Oleander plant and moved for the winter to the orangery. (tres chic!) Although now a days it is not easy to find old ones, I’m sometimes still lucky. So this one is an exact replica of a pair I bought this summer at a market near Montceaules-mines in French Burgundy. The finish is our own idea, designed for in-house use or under a roof. Oleander not included!

25741 “YOU WISH YOU HAD AN ORANGERY” CONTAINER ELM WOOD FINISH 24”w x 24”d x 31”h

My wife Ellen was very excited when she discovered a garden planter at a flea market near Givry in the Burgundy region of France. Inspired by the orangeries of Versailles, the French had them made in the 19th century. You can open the sides to get the heavy pots out or to air the roots. We were even more excited to discover that three more were still standing in the dealer’s truck. Of course Ellen kept one for her own garden. But we also asked our craftsmen to make an exact replica.

In the early 19th century you did not travel with Samsonite. Your luggage was hand made by a local craftsman and, if you could afford it, was brass studded and covered in real leather. That’s how our great craftsmen are still doing it. A solid frame of reclaimed wood, painted interior covered in real leather, and each nail placed individually. Just do not use it for traveling since the service for handling your luggage has changed as well!

In the 19th century luggage was no better treated than your Samsonite! So that’s why they covered their trunks with canvas and leather. At an auction in Antwerp, Belgium we bought a set of eighteen suitcases, supposedly owned by one person since they we all covered in the same canvas. We sold them all in one week since they made great coffee and side tables. We liked the idea so much that we asked our craftsmen to make exact replicas.
