Looking Back and Forward
As we make our way through 2013, we reflect on the past 60 years and realize that the vision started many years ago has had a lasting impact for hundreds of graduates. We realize that this vision is to raise our children in the way of the Lord as a covenant community; we are all responsible for helping each child reach their full potential, even more relevant today in our often-conflicting and rapidly changing culture. We realize that learning is also very different than it was 60 years ago. I first trust that this newsletter will help highlight some of the varieties and styles of learning and teaching that are happening for 21st century students. Secondly, it will reinforce the fact that the education that happens at Sarnia Christian School is still relevant as it was 60 years ago, preparing and challenging children to transform our world for the honour of God and to the betterment of society. FOUNDATION. CHALLENGE. PREPARATION.
Here are just a few of the many areas that our students have been exploring:
Every Wednesday in February, students have been developing their gifts in hands-on ways. The activities of Discovery Days cover a wide range of interests, such as ukulele-making, woodworking, gymnastics, candle-making and geo-caching.
Grades JK/SK Language: We are learning sight words. Our new words are: at, come, here, will, jump, up, look and you. Creation Studies: We started our new unit on Friendship. In this unit we are learning how to be good friends and build each other up with encouraging words. Grades 1 & 2 Recitations: Students are saying their poems and stories they have been memorizing at home. Raz Kids: Each student has been given a Raz Kids account. Raz Kids is an online levelled reading library. Parents can use this resource for them to read at home independently. Grades 3 & 4 French Plays: Our French plays, “Les Trois Petits Cochons” will be presented in class. Students will memorize their parts to the best of their ability and find costumes they may want to use. Music: Students play their recorders at school each Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday. We have accepted an invitation to play for the Seniors’ Coffee group at Living Hope Christian Reformed Church. Grades 5 & 6 Band: Students have received their festival piece as well as a couple other pieces to work on. We will be playing at Living Hope on Sunday, February 24. Language Arts: We are continuing to read our fractured fairy tale on Rapunzel. It is very interesting and exciting! Grades 7 & 8 Bible: Students have started researching for their charity projects. A main goal of these projects is to get students to think beyond themselves and to widen their understanding of how to help and care about others. Geography: We are continuing our study of the desert and different issues and problems with the desert life and how they can be combated.
This amazing opportunity is possible because Sarnia Christian School is blessed with a talented and supporting community that is willing to lead these special activities. On behalf of our students, thank you to all those who have contributed to this event’s success.
to the senior boys’ basketball team for winning the Woodstock District Christian School Basketball Tournament on January 29!
Hark! The Herald Angels Sang
On December 19, the voices and musical talents of students filled the gymnasium much to the delight of friends and family in the audience.
Cool New Spaces – Inside and Out Recently, our school property has seen some wonderful improvements. Many more are planned for the near future.
• We are working with Architect David Gilchrist and Sarnia Christian School alumnus Ruth Burkhart to transform the inside of our building into one that truly facilitates 21st century learning for our students. We hope to show our community the initial plans at our Spring Membership meeting. • Students love their new outdoor classroom! What was once asphalt is now a stone and brick space for students to learn in an inspiring open-air environment. If you have not yet seen it, stop by and check it out. • We recently found out that the Lambton Christian School Society will be receiving up to $64,084 from the Government of Canada. This is made possible with the support of Economic Action Plan 2012 through the Community Infrastructure Improvement Fund. This funding will help to renovate our community gym (including a new floor and upgrades to our roof) as well as support past and future improvements to our outdoor community play areas; this includes asphalt, gates, removal of the old playground, kindergarten play equipment refurbishments and a new running track.
This funding is certainly a tremendous blessing, but more assistance is needed to ensure that our facility is properly suited for 21st century learning. If you would like to make a donation, please call 519-383-7750. Gym (before)

Grade 7 & 8 Students Eager for Cultural Trip of a Lifetime! Students are counting down the days to their thrilling (and educational) Ottawa/Montreal trip, coming up May 27–31. Through the efforts of many parents and students, and with tremendous support from the community, all of the required money was raised through a spaghetti dinner and students offering their services. Highlights of the trip will include the National Art Gallery of Canada, the Canadian War Museum, Parliament Buildings, the Biodôme and Old Montréal.
Membership Generosity Continues A big THANK YOU goes out to all of the members of the Lambton Christian School Society! Our school community raised more than $44,000 that will help students in a multitude of ways. One especially generous gift has resulted in an entire class being equipped with iPads! If you would like to learn more about becoming a member, please contact the school.
Battle of the Books!
This is an academic competition where students are required to read ten books. After reading and practicing, students will participate in a battle with other schools teams. During the battle they will be required to answer detailed questions about the books. This year's battle will be on April 3.
