Matt Witten will be celebrating the release of “The Necklace,” a fast-paced thriller starring an upstate New York waitress, with a return to Saratoga and a series of events at Northshire Bookstore and other area venues.

SARATOGA SPRINGS — There was a place in Saratoga Springs on the cusp of the dawn of this most recent century that stood on the east side of Broadway and just north of Congress Park where locals consumed mugs of gourmet coffee and nestled into wingback chairs. “’Breakfast At Madeline’s,’” says Matt Witten, recalling both the name of the Saratoga cafe – Madeline’s - and the title of his book published in 1998 that was written at least partially there.

he Improved Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks of the World (IBPOEW) has been active in Saratoga Springs for 96 years. Known as the “Black Elks” among its membership, the Frederick Allen Lodge No. 609 was chartered August 5, 1925.

The Lodge was named in honor of Frederick Joseph Allen who was one of the first Redcaps employed by the Union Station in Albany.

Mr. Allen worked there for many years, and later became Custodian of Saratoga Springs City Hall. The Mary A. Carter Temple No. 362, woman’s auxiliary was chartered September 17, 1925.

It is presumed that in the early years, meetings were held in member’s homes as there is no record of the organization in any one location. The “Ladies Elks Restaurant” is listed at 48 Congress Street in the 1929 city directory.

The Mary A. Carter Temple probably met there, as well as the Frederick Allen Lodge. Fortyeight Congress Street later became the location of the well-known Golden Grill. The first record of a formal location for the IBPOEW lodge was in 1940 at 101 Congress Street on the northwest corner of East Beekman Street. From 1942 through 1966, the lodge was located at 88-90 Congress Street, just west of the railroad trestle that once bridged Congress Street.

The Frederick Allen Lodge sponsored the Royal Antlers Junior Herd 326, for younger members.

Ernest Bonner, Exalted Ruler of the junior group, and member of the drill team, remembers practice sessions in the middle of Congress Street and on the third floor of City Hall. The Royal Antlers Junior Herd 326 award-winning drill team, organized and directed by Will Smith, traveled all over the country to perform in various competitions and march in numerous parades.

Mr. Bonner believes that The Drill Team was a very worthwhile activity that provided a focus and outlet for children, teenagers and young adults while also teaching responsibility and teamwork.

Street, devastating what little remained of the neighborhood that had already lost so much to urban renewal.

The Frederick Allen Lodge and the Mary A. Carter Temple relocated to 69 Beekman Street, in the building that once housed Fusco’s Restaurant. The Lodge became increasingly active in the ‘60’s and ‘70’s hosting several national and state conventions. Longtime local resident Mable “Biddie” Anthony fondly remembered events in the early days being held at Convention Hall on Broadway, before it burned in 1965.

In 1973, approximately 4,000 members from the New York State Association and Auxiliary of IBPOEW marched in the annual parade. The parade made its way through the city, from the east side recreation field, to Broadway, continuing on to the Lodge on Beekman Street. Membership in the organization has always been marked by families with multiple members from different generations.

In 1969, four generations of the same family were all members of the Elks organization, including Mrs. Z. Mary Evans, Escort of the Mary A. Carter Temple; her daughter, Mrs. Florence Sharp, Vice Daughter Ruler of the Temple; and Mrs. Sharp’s daughter, Mrs. Sherryl J. Moore, Recording Secretary; and Sherryl J’s daughter, Sherryl D. Moore, a member of the Rosebud Class.

Ms. Anita Turner shared her memories of the Annual Grand Elks Ball at the Casino in Congress Park, with Courtney Reid, for the

West Side Oral Narrative Project in 1999. Ms. Turner remembers that it was held the day after the Whitney Ball, and the organizers were able to utilize many of the same decorations and supplies. Because it was held in the height of the summer season, attendees came from many states and Canada. The Ball always began with the Grand Elks March, with people dressed in their best finery.

Despite the heat of August, many of the women wore mink stoles.

Ms. Turner remembers as a child watching in awe as people marched in. The Casino was always filled to capacity, and they were entertained by famous bands, such as the Cab Calloway Band, and the Duke Ellington Band. The Ball would continue to the early morning hours often followed by breakfast at Hattie’s, a ritual for many.

Ms. Turner observed “as time got on, like everything else, the older people died out, the younger people did not want to pick up that torch and carry it on as the older people had done.” Just after the New Year in 1989, the Lodge on Beekman Street was gutted by a fire. Through hard work and dedication, members were able to repair the damage done to the building and continue to utilize their Beekman Street location.

With 96 years of history and service in Saratoga Springs, the Frederick Allen Lodge No. 609 and the Mary A. Carter Temple No. 362, continue to host dinners and jazz fests while participating in the many neighborhood events of the Beekman Street Arts District.

How I Overcame the Vicious Cycle of Worry and Fear in my Life

Do you ever get stuck in the vicious cycle if worry and fear in your life? As a published author of a managing fear book, I struggled with fear and anxiety for over 20 years. Here is a brief summary of what I did to overcome cycle of fear and anxiety in my life: I got advice from the professionals. The first thing I did was to talk to various counselors since they know how to conquer fear and anxiety. Whenever I talked to the counselors, I would bring a notebook and take notes

so I would not forget the advice that was given to me.

I became an expert on dealing with fear and anxiety. I did everything possible to learn as much as I could in removing my fears and anxieties in my life.

I talked to professionals, read books, joined support groups, and learned from experiences.

I surrounded myself with helpful people. I made it a habit of surrounding myself with supportive people who understood what I was going through. This really helped me out when I was really struggling with my anxieties and stresses.

I learned how to manage my fearful thoughts. The key in getting the edge off of your anxieties is by managing your fearful thinking. Whenever I would get a negative and fearful thought, I would challenge that thought with positive statements and realistic thinking. I also made it a habit to focus on the facts of my current situation and not on my negative thinking.

I was persistent. There were times I felt like giving up because my fears and anxieties were so powerful and I didn’t know what

to do. I worried about what would happen and that just made my fears that much stronger. During those times, I would consult with a professional and I made it a point to learn from my experiences so that I would be better able to handle these situations in the future.

I did not make excuses. With a lot of practice, I became very good at reducing my fears and anxieties.

I realized that the answers to my problems were out there, however it was up to me to find those techniques that would get my life back on track. Making excuses would not improve my situation.

I realized that you can’t predict the future. I realized that there are always factors and circumstances that I cannot predict or anticipate that could make a difference in my stressful and fearful situations. A person may be 99% correct in predicting the future, but all it takes is that 1% to make a difference. The key

is to focus on the present.

I made the choice to get better. You have to make the effort to find the answers to overcome your situation. It will not always be easy, but you can overcome the cycle of fear and worry with hard work and a willingness to learn from your everyday experiences.

It is important not to give up.

Bob grew up in Troy, the son of the late Eleanor (Will) and Irving Millington. After graduating from Troy High School in 1964, he began a long career in sales.

He spent the last thirty-three years of his career as a sales engineer with Amada America., retiring in 2017. On August 9, 1967, he married the love of his life, Barbara (Rich) and together they settled in Saratoga Springs where they raised their family.

Bob was a loving man, who was always ready to share a story or a joke. He loved to make people laugh and always had a smile on his face. His first and greatest love was his family; willing to do anything to make them happy, always dedicating his time to be with his children, and proud of their accomplishments and the families they raised. grandchildren play sports, seeing their achievements, and watching them grow. An avid sports fan, he enjoyed rooting for the Orioles, Celtics and Giants, no matter their record. He also had a passion for horse racing and sharing his handicapping with friends and family. Never one to shy away from adventure, Bob loved to travel and explore new places. His free spirit often led his family to places they had never seen, while traversing 48 states and many countries.

Bob was predeceased by his parents, brother Richard and his nephew. He leaves behind his wife, his son, Robert Jr. and his wife Kerrin, grandson Trevor and granddaughter Maryn of Tolland, CT; his daughter Stacy Hyjek and her husband Robert, and grandsons Patrick and Jacob of Meriden, NH; his sister Patricia of Averill Park and many nieces and nephews.

Augustus “Gus” E. DeMatteo

SARATOGA SPRINGS — Augustus “Gus” E. DeMatteo, age 93, passed away peacefully on Monday, August 02, 2021, at Saratoga Hospital with his son by his side.

He was born on July 28, 1928, in Saratoga Springs, son of the late Gus and Anna DeMatteo.

Gus served in the US Army from 1950 to 1951 as a private.

Gus was a teamster for Local 294, then worked as a boilermaker at West Milton Nuclear for several years. He worked for the City of Saratoga Springs Department of Public Works for 30 years and retired as a motor equipment operator.

Gus belonged to the Italian American Club for many years and enjoyed the numerous cookouts and social events the club held. In his free time, he would go fishing and hunting with his friends and family. As a born and raised Saratogian, he had a passion for horse racing and could be found at the track most days in July and August. But most of all, Gus loved spending time with his son Tony, his grandchildren, and great-grandchildren, who were the light of his life and kept him going all these years. They all knew him and cherished him as their “Pop” or “Pop-Pop.” Gus was truly one of a kind.

He was a man who would do anything for anyone. He loved helping people and prided himself on that. Whatever anyone needed, he was always first in line to help, with no questions asked.

Whether it was plowing people out during snowstorms, running errands for people in need or checking in on his family, Gus was always there, no matter how big or small the task was.

Gus is survived by his son, Anthony DeMatteo (Patricia); grandchildren, Erin Dahlstrom (Jerad), Julie DeMarco (Tom),

Stephen Miller, 42, of Mechanicville, was sentenced to 1 year in jail, on the charge of criminal contempt in the first-degree, in connection with an incident in Northumberland.

Sabrina M. Carpenter, 27, was sentenced July 23 to time served and five years of probation on the charge of felony robbery, in connection with an incident in Greenfield.

Jessie Delossantos, 32, of Moreau, was sentenced July 23 to 1 year in jail on the charge of failure to register as a sex offender.

Patrick F. Phelan, 54, of Saratoga Springs, was sentenced July 23 to 3 to 9 years in jail for aggravated vehicular assault, and 1 year in jail for reckless endangerment. Sentences to run concurrently.

POLICE Shamiek A.H. Shorter, age 25, Schenectady, was charged July 25 in Saratoga Springs with misdemeanor DWI, aggravated unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle, criminal possession of a weapon, operating a motor vehicle without inspection certificate, and moved from lane unsafely. He was sent to Saratoga County Jail in lieu of $5,000 cash/ $10,000 bond.

Kyree N. Graham, age 24, Albany, was charged with two felony counts of criminal possession weapon, and Amir L. O’Sullivan, age 22, Watervliet, charged with felony criminal possession of a controlled substance on July 23 in Saratoga Springs. Graham is accused of unlawfully possessing a loaded .38 caliber Firestorm revolver and O’Sullivan of allegedly physically interfering with officers investigating the scene, and possessing MDMA. Nicholas W. Kislowski, age 18, Ballston Spa, and Mitchell L. Madigan, age 18, Saratoga Springs, were each charged in Saratoga Springs July 20 and 22, respectively, with felony robbery in connection with an alleged incident June 1 on Schuyler Drive just

BLOTTER 5 off of Lake Avenue, where a 16-year-old boy had been robbed of personal property by a group of five “younger” people, according to Saratoga Springs Police. The victim suffered an arm injury as a result of the robbery.

John Mackey, 22, of Saratoga Springs, was charged July 23 with misdemeanor DWI, refusal to take a breath test, and four driving/vehicle related violations after being involved in a property damage accident on Beacon Hill Drive.

Thomas Crandall, 26, of Ballston Spa, was charged July 24 in Saratoga Springs with misdemeanor DWI, and speeding.

Francisco Rivera, 23, of Troy, was charged July 24 on Caroline Street with resisting arrest, harassment, assault w/intent to cause injury to a police officer as a felony, and disorderly conduct.

Terence Pittman, 46, of Amsterdam, was charged July 23 in Saratoga Springs with aggravated unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle, and following too closely.

Michael Clark, 59, of Lexington, N.Y., was charged July 24 in Saratoga Springs with misdemeanor DWI, aggravated

DWI, aggravated unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle, and three driving/ vehicle violations.

David Govia, 53, of Saratoga Springs, was charged July 24 with coercion in the thirddegree, a misdemeanor.

Daniel Pitman, 29, of Amsterdam, was charged July 25 in Saratoga Springs with criminal possession of a controlled substance.

Leslie Cade, 29, of Schenectady, was charged July 26 on Caroline Street with falsely reporting catastrophe or emergency to official agency, a misdemeanor.

Justin Feinman, 24, of Colonie, was charged July 25 on Caroline Street with disorderly conduct, obstructing governmental administration, and resisting arrest.

Lindsay Feinman, 20, of Albany, was charged July 25 on Caroline Street with obstructing governmental administration, possession of a forged instrument as a felony, and resisting arrest.

Loriel Dickson, 34, of Troy, was charged July 25 in Saratoga Springs with resisting arrest and disorderly conduct.

Justin Harris, 33, of Greenport, was charged July 19 in Saratoga Springs with two felony counts grand larceny, misdemeanor assault, petit larceny, and criminal obstruction of breathing.

Joseph Deschenes, 50, of Saratoga Springs, was charged July 21 with misdemeanor menacing and felony criminal possession of a weapon.

Aristeo Alvarado, 46, of Saratoga Springs, was charged July 21 with criminal possession of a controlled substance.

WILTON — Wilton Wildlife Preserve & Park is continuing to host Nature Craft Hours under the pavilion at Camp Saratoga every Tuesday throughout August and September. This program runs from 4 – 5 p.m. and is geared for children of all ages.

Each Tuesday will feature a different and creative naturethemed arts project. Activities are TBA but have included sun prints, natural tie dye, seed medallions and more. Please note, there is a craft supply fee of $3 per participant. Participants should park in Parking Lot #1 located on Scout Road directly across the street from the pavilion. Registration is required. Space is limited.

SARATOGA SPRINGS — The Racing City Chorus, with their A Cappella “Barbershopstyle” singing, performs consecutive Thursday evenings on Broadway through Aug. 26.

“The Chorus will be entertaining crowds from all walks of life who love to hear barbershop a cappella harmony being sung on Broadway,” says Racing City Chorus President Rusty Senecal. “One of the most rewarding things we do is sing to audiences and experience the positive responses it creates in youngsters and adults.”

The Racing City Chorus is a men’s singing organization that

meets regularly to practice, perform, socialize, and have fun.

They currently have over 25 singers from all walks of life and all parts of the Saratoga Springs/ Capital Region. The main purpose of the Racing City Chorus is to get out and sing for the community. For more information, visit www.racingcitychorus.org or call 518-504-7464.

proceeds will benefit BSBPA community activities.

City Eyes Earlier Closing Time Under Development: Six-Story Building at

SARATOGA SPRINGS — Citing public safety concerns occurring during the early morning hours, the City Council on Aug. 3 adopted a resolution it hopes will ultimately result in the 2 a.m. “closing time” of bars. State law currently allows establishments to remain open until 4 a.m.

“Through the analytics and arrests and what we’re hearing through the police department, the hours between 2 and 4 a.m. are unquestioningly posing a public safety threat to the community-at-large due to the

volume and intensity of the people coming to enjoy our nightlife,” said Public Safety Commissioner Robin Dalton, regarding the measure that asks the Saratoga County Board of Supervisors to enact a resolution for submittal to the State Liquor Authority.

The SLA has the power, upon receipt of a resolution by the county board of supervisors, to restrict current hours for sales of the on-premises of consumption alcoholic beverages, according to the resolution.

“We cannot let this public safety threat go on. I am personally worried about the safety of my police officers every night when

they go out, especially between those hours and the safety of the people coming to enjoy our nightlife,” Commissioner Dalton told the council, as city Mayor Meg Kelly held up what she said was a stack of 52 fake ID cards that were presented to one bar in one night.

The council approved the resolution, which will now go to the county Board of Supervisors, which next meets on Aug. 17.

Regarding any changes that may be implemented in the future, Dalton said “I think it’s important for us to work with the businesses that might be affected to offset any financial loss, or the perception of financial loss they might have.”

Saratoga-Capitol District Parks Region Announces $97,750 in New Grant Funding for Critical Projects SARATOGA SPRINGS — Friends of Saratoga Spa State Park is among four recipients of grant funds awarded this week.

The Saratoga-Capitol District Parks Region was awarded nearly $100,000 in new funding through Park and Trail Partnership Grants program. Funding will be disbursed to four of the regionals friends’ groups to build programming capacity, produce educational content, and develop key infrastructure projects. The full list of awards include: • Friends of Saratoga Spa State Park ($75,000) - To restore the Coesa spring house, provide interpretive signage about the Coesa Mineral Spring, and to install a historically accurate replica of the original granite fountain.

• Friends of Fort Crailo ($6,500) - To harness the capacity to draw broader awareness to the Friends of Fort Crailo and Crailo State Historic Site by strengthening the board makeup, developing a strong membership plan, and creating a website.

• Friends of Grafton Lakes State Park ($9,506) - To build capacity through membership, volunteer, and donor development, and to fund a series of activities including hiking, mountain biking, summer film series,

fundraising events, promotional materials, and other initiatives.

• Friends of Bennington Battlefield ($6,750) - To add professionally produced audio files via QR code to recently installed interpretive panels providing diverse accounts of the Battle.

“These grants speak to the thriving partnership between State Parks and Historic Sites and our individual Friends groups.” said Regional Director Alane BallChinian, in a statement. “As community focused non-profits, our Friends groups are able to execute on unique projects that meet the needs of our patrons, made possible with the Park and Trail Partnership

grants. This funding will change the capacity and landscape of our sites for generations to come” The New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation oversees more than 250 parks, historic sites, recreational trails, golf courses, boat launches and more, which are visited by 71 million people annually. A recent study found that New York State Parks generates $5 billion in park and visitor spending, which supports nearly 54,000 jobs and over $2.8 billion in additional state GDP. DRAWING LINES: NY REDISTRICTING COMMISSION SEEKING PUBLIC COMMENT THROUGH MID-AUGUST

SARATOGA SPRINGS — Public input sessions will be held until mid-August across the state in the first-ever public redistricting process where average New Yorkers have the opportunity to weigh-in on their district lines.

Redistricting is the process by which new congressional and state legislative district boundaries are drawn, and new boundary lines are drawn every 10 years that decide congressional, state Senate and state Assembly seats.

This time around, those lines will be drawn by the Independent Redistricting Commission – which was created in 2014 by voters in New York State to determine

redistricting after the completion of the 2020 Census.

Members of the commission held a meeting virtually on Aug. 2 that focused on the Capital Region and the Mid-Hudson Valley.

“On Aug. 16, the Census Bureau will release New York’s redistricting census data, which will be used to draft our initial set of lines,” explained David Imamura, during the Aug. 2 meeting. Imamura, an attorney, is chair of the 10-member New York State Independent Redistricting Commission. This week’s meeting included members Elaine Frazier of Albany, Willis Stephens, Jr., John Conway III, and Ivelisse Cuevas-Molina.

The Commission is actively soliciting input from communities, and stresses that as it embarks

on the process of drawing the future district lines of New York State, feedback and guidance from the residents of New York “is of the utmost importance and at the core of the Commission’s goal to fairly and equitably redraw Congressional and State Legislature lines.”

Upcoming virtual meetings welcoming live public input will be held 2 p.m. Monday, Aug. 9 (focusing on the Southern Tier of N.Y. and Central N.Y.), and 2 p.m.

Thursday, Aug. 12 (Finger Lakes

and Western NY). “We also will be having a catch-all session in mid-August, prior to drawing the lines,” Imamura said. That session date has not yet been announced.

Materials such as letters and maps may also be submitted separately from the meetings, via the commission website.

Timeline: Public feedback is currently welcome, in advance of the release of census data. After the Census Bureau releases its data on Aug. 16, the Independent Redistricting Commission, or

IRC, will start drawing its “initial set of lines.” Those will be released

by Sept. 15, and one month later the public will be asked for their input on the proposed lines, Imamura said. Potential modifications will subsequently be made and the completed proposal will be submitted to the legislature in January, 2022. Election Primaries next take place in June 2022.

Saratoga County: “Strongly Encourages” Vaccinations, Will Not Mandate Masks

BALLSTON SPA — The Capital Region in general, and Saratoga County especially, has seen an upswing of COVID infection rates over the past few weeks.

On July 29, Saratoga County Board of Supervisors Chairman Todd Kusnierz announced the formation of the Saratoga Health and Readiness Planning (SHARP) Task Force, which was tasked to analyze guidance issued by state Department of Health and the CDC, and make recommendations for the community.

“We had a meeting with senior staff here at the county (on Aug. 2) and we expect to have a full Task Force meeting – we’re shooting for the end of this week and hold a public event to update our county residents,” Kusnierz said this week.

“The county is strongly recommending our residents follow CDC guidelines. However, the county is not going to do mandatory requirements for masks. At the end of the day the most effective way to protect yourself, your loved ones, the people you interact with, is to get vaccinated - so we are strongly encouraging anyone who has not been vaccinated to do so. “ The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has tagged Saratoga County as having a “substantial” level of transmission and as such recommends the wearing of masks indoors, whether or not a person has been vaccinated. According to Saratoga County data this week, the fully vaccinated population accounts for 1.5% of overall county infections to date. Of the 168 deaths in the county, all were unvaccinated.

Approximately two-thirds of the county’s population – just

over 150,000 of the approximately 230,000 Saratoga residents – have received at least one vaccine dose. According to the state’s Vaccination Zip Code Tracker - Saratoga Springs, Ballston Spa, Clifton Park are each above the 70% threshold for vaccination rates, while Victory Mills (46.7%), Porter Corners (48%), and Corinth (52.5%) are the three municipalities with the lowest vaccinated zip codes, according to the state.

The city announced Aug. 3 it has begun appointing members to the COVID-19 Memorial Committee. The group will be tasked with creating the language and placement of a memorial for those who have lost their lives to the pandemic. Among the members are: Charlie Samuels, Tara Gaston, Susanna Combs, and Dr. Robert Donnarumma, chair of Emergency Medicine at Saratoga Hospital.

250th Anniversary: County to Celebrate Battle of Saratoga continued from front page...

“This is going to be a big deal. It’s a huge opportunity for the county. We’re going to ensure that it’s a big deal and the county and the surrounding communities are going to benefit from it,” says Todd Kusnierz, supervisor of the town of Moreau and chairman of the Saratoga County Board of Supervisors.

The American Revolution – in which Saratoga County played a significant role - will be observed as a 250th anniversary commemoration across the country from 2025 through 2033. Federal and state anniversary commissions have been or are in the process of being created. Two weeks ago, the county Board of Supervisors adopted a resolution to establish the Saratoga County 250th American Revolution Commission.

“Two key aspects of this

effort are the educational impact, and the economic impact,” says Kusnierz. “We will involve schools and teachers to help encourage them to educate our children on the events that took place right here in our own backyard, and the importance it had on the world.

The other component is the economic impact that this will have on the county. We estimate tens of thousands of visitors, including international visitors, will come in to our county over the course of this celebration – especially in 2027 – and that will have a major impact on our local economy.

Cultural and heritage tourism is a key driver of tourism dollars. “ The Battles of Saratoga – which took place in September and October 1777 - were a turning point in the Revolutionary War, resulting in the surrender of the Army of British General John Burgoyne to American General

Horatio Gates following the success of the Americans at the Battles of Saratoga, “Certainly Schuylerville, the town of Saratoga, the town of Stillwater are very critical players in this celebration. For our area particularly it will be the Battles of Saratoga and the ultimate surrender of Burgoyne here,” said Tom Wood, longtime supervisor of the town of Saratoga, who had previously served as its historian.

Wood, along with Kusnierz and Stillwater Supervisor Edward Kinowski are part of the 13-member commission – a number chosen in honor of the 13 original colonies. Additional members appointed to the commission by Kusnierz include Saratoga County Historian Lauren Roberts, and persons representing county education, veterans’ services, the Saratoga National Historical Park, and others. The Commission will

be active through the end of the calendar year 2033. Members of the commission will receive no salary or compensation for their services.

“Although the big events happened here in the town of Saratoga, and in the town of Stillwater, we want this to be a county-wide celebration, to involve all of Saratoga County,” Wood said. “There were Revolutionary War things that happened throughout the county and those will all be integrated into the celebration, and we’ll also will be communicating with other counties, as they likewise will be creating Revolutionary War 250th anniversary commissions.”

Varying themes will be established for each year of the anniversary to enable other historic sites and groups in the county to plan events in conjunction with the themes. The commission will also coordinate with both state

and federal revolutionary war commissions recently established to help mark the national milestone, Kusnierz says.

“The focus will be on the anniversary of the Battle of Saratoga – that was the turning point of the American Revolution, and dare I say one of the most influential battles in world history. That celebration is going to take place in the fall of 2027. Obviously, this is a big event and we wanted to get the ball rolling.”

The county will be investing funds to help organize and publicize events, and the Board will begin discussing its level of investment in the fall when the 2022 budget process gets underway.

State and/or federal funds may also play a role. The county will also look to form a non-profit that to collect donations that may also be used to help with the events and celebrations, Kusnierz added.

SARATOGA CAN CODE

Saratoga TODAY SARATOGA SPRINGS — CanCode Communities is bringing their coding programs to the Saratoga community for the fall semester at SUNY Adirondack.

Back in 2016, Annmarie Lanesey was running a software business with her husband and was having a hard time finding developers and software engineers in the Capital Region. So, she founded CanCode Communities, originally Albany CanCode, which is a 501(c) (3) community-oriented organization that introduces people from Upstate New York and across the country into the tech field.

“A light bulb went off,” said Lanesey, Founder and CEO. “I started to realize that there are people in our communities for

these high paying jobs, but they have no idea that they have the aptitude for it.”

“As a woman in technology, all throughout my career I have been working in a predominantly male dominated industry,” added Lanesey. “Diversity has always been a part of my passion, bringing more people into the tech sector.”

After receiving calls from employers and other organizations outside the Albany region asking if they could share their model, the organization began a rebranding to add affiliates to their network. Their first expansion was in Kingston last year, and the four new affiliates this year include Saratoga, Herkimer, New York City, and Berkshire County.

Although, they have already had a presence in Saratoga for approximately two years now.

“Saratoga is unique in the sense that it is part of the Capital Region, but its also has its own distinct characteristics,” said Lanesey. “We thought that since we are doing this rebranding that Saratoga deserved its own CanCode Community. We are excited about our expansion with our partner SUNY Adirondack, where we will deliver our classes.”

The technology classes are actually training classes intended to build the workforce for employers in the region.

There are several different technologies that they train for: Front-End Web Development, Python for Data Analytics, SQL, JavaScript Frameworks and Fundamentals, and a few others like Microsoft technologies.

In addition, employer mentors – working community members in software technology – are brought into the classroom to talk about what it is like to work within their companies.

Currently, there are two classes running at SUNY Adirondack, Python for Data Analytics and Front-End Web Development. They will be running another cohort of classes starting in November. These classes are completely free to the unemployed and underemployed who meet the eligibility requirements, under a grant from the New York State Department of Labor. They are about a semester long, and meet twice a week for three hours a night.

Suit Up: Mark Thomas Men’s Apparel Coming to Broadway

Saratoga TODAY SARATOGA SPRINGS — Mark Thomas Men’s Apparel, a locally owned upscale menswear business out of Albany, will be opening a second store in downtown Saratoga Springs.

Owner Kerry Fagan has signed a 5-year lease for a 2,000 square foot storefront at 385 Broadway next to Druthers Brewing Co. The space is in a newly constructed building where The National, a men’s clothing store owned by the partners at Saratoga National Golf Club, once stood and offers 69 apartments above the commercial space.

Mark Thomas Men’s Apparel will take up 1,100 square feet of the space, while Olde Saratoga Coin will be moving to the other 900 square feet. C2 Architects and Greco Construction will be handling the buildout, with plans to make a movable divider or set of barn doors between the stores.

“I’ve been looking for a place for several years, and this was a huge opportunity,” said Fagan.

Vapor at Saratoga Casino Hotel to Reopen on Sept. 30 SARATOGA SPRINGS — Saratoga Casino Hotel has announced that they will reopen on Thursday, Sept. 30 after being closed for nearly eighteen months.

Vapor closed in March 2020 due to the pandemic and although they could have reopened earlier this year, Saratoga Casino Hotel chose to keep the entertainment venue closed so they could renovate the space.

Vapor will reopen this fall with a new look and new dance floor, and will continue to showcase live entertainment every weekend featuring top-performing local bands with no cover charge. Special events including tributes and national acts will be scattered throughout the

entertainment calendar. Shows originally scheduled for 2020, Material Girls and Michael Grandinetti, are now on sale for

new fall dates. Material Girls, a tribute performance to Madonna, Cher, Lady Gaga, and Adele will appear on Oct. 8, and illusionist Michael Grandinetti is scheduled for Nov. 19. The Sandwich Generation is Growing, and So Are Its Responsibilities one of them, here are a few steps you can take to protect your loved ones and prepare for the financial responsibilities ahead.

cross the United States, millions of middle-aged adults struggle with the dual responsibilities of raising a child and caring for an aging parent. They are members of what is commonly called the sandwich generation. In fact, a 2018 Pew Research Center analysis of Bureau of Labor Statistics data found that 29% of adults have a child younger than 18 at home, and 12% of parents with a child at home provide unpaid care for an adult as well.

The rise of the sandwich generation is a byproduct of two powerful trends: (1) women giving birth later in life, and (2) the increasing longevity of the U.S. population. When you combine these factors with a growing number of young adults living with their parents, it’s easy to see why so many middle-aged Americans are concerned about the future. If you are

Talk to your parents about the kind of care they’d prefer, and discuss it with your siblings. See which, if any, family members have the capacity to help provide care and which home would be the most accessible. In case external help is needed, research local resources to see what is available—and at what cost. Most importantly, consult an attorney and make sure you have all the legal documents needed to make sudden medical and financial decisions if the need arises.

Evaluate your resources.

Before determining a course of action, make sure you know what resources are available. Can your parents pay for care on their own?

Do they have long-term care insurance? Do they own any whole life insurance policies with living benefits that they may be able to use to pay for care? Can other family members contribute financially? Is public assistance a viable option?

Protect your children’s lifestyle and future.

While caring for a parent is a huge responsibility, it’s important to make sure your children’s needs and your own retirement needs are also met. If you haven’t done so already, set up a college fund and make funding it a priority. If your place of employment offers

Community Care Pop-UP: “Emergency and Safety Kits” SARATOGA SPRINGS — Youth² - Youth Helping Youth has partnered with Rebuilding Saratoga to host a charity drop off event to support safety in our local community. Explore a Career in Horse Racing: Amplify Horse Racing Education Tours Available at the Track

Sundae on the Farm Agriculture Scholarship Winners SARATOGA COUNTY — The Saratoga County Agricultural Promotion Committee announced the winners of the Sundae on the Farm Agriculture Scholarship.

The award was handed out at the Saratoga County Fair during the conclusion of the 4-H Dairy Show. Peter Bardunias, Senior Vice President, Community Advancement for The Capital Region Chamber, and member of the Agricultural Promotion Committee presented the awards.

The scholarship is intended to alleviate costs associated with further education endeavors in the agriculture industry.

Hannah (Lainey) Koval: Lainey grew up on Koval Brothers Dairy Farm in Saratoga County, and whether it was showing her cows at the fair, helping her parents in the barn, promoting local dairy products, or being a part of her local 4-H or FFA program, Lainey was always submerged in

agriculture. She attends Cornell University for Agricultural Science with plans to concentrate in Business Management so she may, hopefully, return and work on her family’s dairy farm.

Michael Theobald: Michael came into the world of agriculture later in life through a flower nursery in Saratoga Springs. The owners themselves had an overflowing passion for the nursery business, which watered his own growing love for Agriculture. The experience helped him settle on

pursuing an education in agriculture. He is attending SUNY Morrisville with his major in Agricultural Science.

Blake Wadsworth: Agriculture was the base of some of Blake’s earliest memories. His day-to-day has always revolved around agriculture; from feeding calves to watching his dad milk cows before school in the morning.

He is attending Cornell University.

When not in school, he spends much of his time working on local dairy farms doing herd work.

SARATOGA SPRINGS — Amplify Horse Racing, a nonprofit promoting education and careers in the thoroughbred industry, will be hosting five days of educational tours at Saratoga Race Course, in collaboration with the New York Racing Association (NYRA) and New York Thoroughbred Horsemen’s Association.

The Amplify Saratoga Tours are great for middle, high school, or college students who are looking to explore careers in this vibrant sport, learn more about the horses and people of racing, and ways to be involved.

The tours will begin at 8 a.m.

and include a visit to the stable area to watch morning, training, learn from industry professionals, and visit a barn. There will be a break for lunch, and then the tour will reconvene at the races to visit the saddling area, learn more about industry jobs and thoroughbred aftercare, and watch the races.

The tour will end around 4 p.m.

It is free to register and will be limited to eight registrants per tour. Open to ages 12-15 (parents and guardians are welcome to participate). Available dates are Aug. 11, 13, and 15.

Building and Remodeling Post Pandemic Take a Page Out of Silver Linings Playbook

ow is a good time to build or remodel as interest rates are at historic lows hovering around 3% depending on your credit score. Building and remodeling inquiries are also on the rise as the housing shortage continues. The pandemic has affected the supply chain of goods and services in virtually every sector of commerce.

Building goods and materials are no exception. But the good news is that it’s still very doable whether you are considering building a new home or a remodeling project. There are many scenarios playing out in a seller’s market as well. Building new and remodeling are trending because many people find themselves dissatisfied with the current real estate inventory. When people buy a home that is not exactly what they want they will most likely want to remodel it. For others this is the best time to take the leap and build from scratch. This ensures that you will get most, if not everything, on your wish list. Chances are that regardless of your preference, you may need to work with a builder.

Building and remodeling are still thriving post pandemic but just know that the lead times are growing. As a society we’ve all had to make various adjustments throughout this pandemic. But the silver linings continue to show through. We’ve reimagined what a classroom, workplace and community all look like. We have learned to change our habits and expectations in almost all facets of life. We along with our clients have also had to make some adjustments in building and remodeling homes regarding client selections and lead times. Cabinets, counter tops, appliances, flooring, and plumbing fixtures are all taking extended times for delivery. Simply put it takes a bit longer now to build or remodel a home now. Our industry has reset pre-pandemic build times on a typical house from 150-180 days to now needing 60–90-day extensions in many cases due to supply chain lag times. For example: Most Cabinet brands made in the USA were arriving in a five-week timeframe. Now we’re looking at approximately 15 weeks for delivery.

Appliances that were once delivered in five to six weeks are now requiring 12–16-week lead times. We’re working closely with clients to reset expectations and ensure that materials are ordered immediately to make those extensions as short as possible.

Another challenge we worked through was the increased price of lumber at the height of the pandemic. Thankfully lumber prices are coming down slightly now. Although they may not come down to pre-pandemic levels it’s reassuring to see the prices trending downward. We will continue to work with our clients to plan for the increase or redesign and/or adjust selections to stay within budget.

Ugh - Slugs!

ummer of 2021 will not be remembered fondly by farmers and gardeners.

A slimy slug.

July was one of the top 5 wettest on record. It hasn’t been very sunny or warm either. This has slowed the ripening of tomatoes and other vegetable crops.

Even the annual flowers have been slow to put on their show this year.

There are a couple of critters that love “the wet” though: slugs and garden snails. They both like to munch on many of our favorite ornamental and vegetable plants. In the past, slugs and snails have been difficult garden pests to control.

In the past, there was only one bait made and the active ingredient was metaldehyde. Metaldehyde was nasty stuff and was for use around ornamental crops but never vegetables, fruits or berries. It is also toxic to animals so I would never even consider using it. Metaldehyde has now been removed from the market...thank goodness!

There were also a variety of “old school” slug and snail control techniques. One option was plucking and drowning the slugs in soapy water. You’d need to wear gloves since slug slime isn’t something that you can wash off easily.

There was also the dish sunk into the ground and filled with beer. The idea was that the slugs and snails are attracted to the beer (true) and would drop into it and drown. This method never worked well for me. I’d catch a few but it seemed like a terrible waste of beer.

Another method was placing grapefruit rinds upside down in the infested area. The slugs and snails are attracted to the grapefruit rind and you’d find them under there in the morning and then drown them. It worked but you’d need dozens of grapefruit rinds if you wanted to catch enough slugs to make a difference.

I never had much success with any of these methods in a year like the one we’re having this year. The demand for something safe and effective safe slug control finally led to a natural mineral-based slug control that is not only very effective but is totally safe to use in the berry patch and vegetable garden.

It is iron phosphate.

I’m most familiar with the iron phosphate slug and snail bait called “Slug Magic” but there are others available. Just make sure that the active ingredient is iron phosphate.

This stuff works great and is harmless to dogs, cats and all the wildlife except slugs and garden snails. You just sprinkle it around (according to the instructions on the package of course) and the slugs actually prefer it to the plants. It works fast too.

Sprinkle it on in the evening (slugs feed at night) and by the next night you won’t see slugs around. Once they nibble a little Slug Magic, they stop feeding and crawl away to die. It really is almost like magic!

he Fasig-Tipton 100 Year Saratoga Sale auction celebration for selected yearlings will take place August 9-10 Monday and Tuesday evening at 630 p.m. On the grounds of the Humphrey S. Finney sales pavilion on George Street in Saratoga Springs with a kickoff ribbon cutting. This years selected yearling sale offering the best of the North American yearling crop will be one of historical significance. Due to last year’s pandemic shut down of the 2020 Saratoga Sale and the fact that the horse industry itself has maneuvered through a lot during these restrictions, it will be a celebration of genuine joy this August. The President and Chief Executive officer of Fasig Tipton Co., Boyd Browning summed up the excitement, “All of us at Fasig-Tipton are eagerly anticipating our 100th Saratoga Yearling Sale! We hope to have the

sale of a century and erase the disappointment of not being able to conduct our sales last year due to COVID.” Manuel Hernandez, Plant manager from Fasig-Tipton relished the same mantra, “We are so happy to be reopening and to welcome everyone back to Saratoga for this historic sale.

I also would like to thank my crew for all their hard work to get everything ready for the sale.” The skill and care that the horse industry has shown throughout this past year has been a model to follow for any industry. With fortitude and grace, they come to this celebratory kick off of 100 years with a grateful attitude. The fact that people will be able to watch in person is just a small blessing that will have huge rewards. Economically and socially, this will be a win. And in horse racing that is the word of the day! The ultimate goal is to WIN.

Back in the 1940s, Clarence Knapp, former Saratoga Mayor stated, “When I was young, I was strong in conviction, that Saratoga was the most beautiful place in the world. My conviction is stronger today.” This very well could be what The Saratoga Sale is creating on this historic year for horse owners, breeders, consignors, and observers. With the closure of the 2020 sale, this current year’s 100th selected yearling sale will be sure to be a beautiful evening with a major significance of magical proportion and commitment to quality.

This harkens back to the WWII years, when due to cargo transport limitations imposed on breeders, the Saratoga Sale was suspended from 1943-45. One can imagine what it felt like on the reopening of this sale in 1946.

The dark green barns creating a cinematic backdrop right out of a film set. The moon high in the sky watching over patrons as they wander the barns with hundreds of stalls, row after row, down dirt paths. Viewing these majestic equine animals, looking into their mystical eyes, peeking out from their stalls one after the other, awaiting their turn to be sold by the auctioneer to the highest bidder. Perusing their breeding lineage for any recognition of stardom knowing that this may be the one that will eventually win a top Stakes Race or possibly become a rare Triple Crown Winner. It is like being in a microcosm within a moment that all the onlookers are connected by one thing, this thoroughbred force of nature. The equus animal and human bond. We don’t understand why, but we are drawn to it. Ultimately, this is why this Saratoga Sale is a moment of moments that will be one for the history books.

Fasig-Tipton is the oldest auction company in North America. In 1917, The Saratoga Sale began annually with the exception of the mentioned WWII closure and the current pandemic shut down from 2020. This timeline brings this auction house to the 2021 hundred years yearling crop to be auctioned this week. According to Clark Brewster, Thoroughbred Horse Owner, “When major stakes races are run in this country, and for that matter around the world, one often sees entrants that were purchased from the Saratoga yearling sale. More than any other yearling sale, Saratoga stands out as the venue with the best

offerings to purchase a champion. It’s 100-year history is a testament to that consistent excellence.” The prestige, the excitement wrapped with the tradition of The Spa is something irreplaceable. This year’s sale may be the biggest celebration yet.

There are many selected sale offerings from the best of the North American yearling crop that is anticipated to bring in millions of dollars this season. Over 200 yearlings will be auctioned. The great Man o’War sold as a yearling at the 1918 Saratoga Sale. Of the 13 Triple Crown past winners, two of the three offered at public auction were sold at a Fasig-Tipton sale. The Triple Crown 2015 American Pharaoh was sold at the 2013 Saratoga Sale. The anticipation for the upcoming sale doesn’t get more thrilling than that, knowing a future star may be sitting in the auction barns this week. Which one will be a Kentucky Derby entry or a Traver’s winner of the Midsummer Derby here at Saratoga Racecourse? There will always be a surprise horse with exceptional quality. This is what makes it exciting. There is value in what is sold here.

The legacy of this sale is rich in tradition. Starting with this 100 Year catalogue, Hip No. 1, will be a Dark Bay or Brown Colt from Empire Maker who sired 15 crops and 65 Winners including Royal Delta, champion Breeders’ Cup ladies Classic. In addition to Pioneer of the Nile, Emollient, Grace Hall, Bodemeister, Mushka and Acoma.

Look for Hip No. 10, a Chestnut Colt from Justify who was the horse of the year champion, Kentucky Derby, Belmont,

Preakness, Santa Anita Derby winner. His first foals are yearlings of 2021. The list goes on and on in the full catalogue of exceptional quality that will be viewed in the 100 Year edition.

With the pandemic economic recovery still looming in our minds, our small business community has been on an upswing and feeling economic vibrancy on their doorsteps. One restauranteur, Bob Lee, owner of the treasured Wishing Well Restaurant on Route 9 and the Brook Tavern on Union Avenue, only blocks away from the Fasig-Tipton pavilion, stated that, “Saratoga is fortunate to have six weeks of world class racing every summer, and sales week is the busiest, most exciting time of the meet. We’re glad it’s back.”

His words ring true to all of us in the horse industry in addition to the natives and tourists of Saratoga Springs. We are certainly happy that this tradition is back and in full swing.

There will be electricity in the air on Monday evening.

There will also be a feeling of gratitude to the consignors, the owners, the buyers and to Fasig-Tipton who make it all possible with these high-quality horses. As Hip No.1 is led from the walking ring through the doors of the auction pavilion, the gallery will be crowded with a group of horse worshipers singing out their litany of adoration, waiting for this defined moment. The lead up is a rite of passage in Saratoga’s social scene but more importantly, this year it will be more than that. It will be a moment of gathering in a world where we don’t take it for granted anymore. We will savor it and simply say “We’re glad it’s back.”

n 2015, Katie Rhodes began training for her first marathon. Constantly hungry from her busy schedule, granola bars became her go-to snack until she took a closer look at the ingredients she was putting in her body.

Most traditional granola bars are highly processed and packed with sugar. Looking to keep herself both full and healthy for her training, Katie decided to make her own granola bar using healthier ingredients and the Charlie Bar was born: a dark chocolate, apricot, and almond bar. Not long after, friends and coworkers began placing orders for bars and the personal venture became a business: TogaNola was formed. “With a mission to provide clean energy for everyone who aspires to be a better version of themselves,” says Rhodes.

In the past 6 years, TogaNola has expanded its range beyond its now 5 flavors of granola bars, adding granola clusters and “protein bombs” in a variety of flavors, like Maple Almond Butter and Blueberry & Ginger Sunflower Seed. All TogaNola products are free of gluten, dairy, and soy, and several flavors are vegan, so there are many options to accommodate dietary restrictions of all types. The business is committed to using locally sourced ingredients, compostable packaging, natural sweeteners (such as local honey and maple syrup), and small-batch baking.

Whether it’s a hike on a warm summer morning or skiing on a cold winter day, granola is the perfect snack for all types of adventures. Rhodes can attest to that herself: TogaNola granola bars and clusters have

accompanied Katie on countless trips including a single season round of the 46 High Peaks last winter.

“The bars are hearty and easily transported in a mess free package. They don’t freeze solid, even in the freezing winter temperatures in the Adirondacks, which is crucial to support Katie on her big hikes,” says husband and co-owner Ken Rhodes.

TogaNola got its start selling at local farmers’ markets and has recently expanded to include an online store and partnerships with local businesses. Katie and Ken are excited to be joining the Saratoga Farmers’ Market as an opportunity to interact directly with their customers and meet other local vendors.

TogaNola’s next adventure? Handmade, locally sourced dehydrated meals to fuel trips that span multiple days. INGREDIENTS: *Ingredients currently available at the farmers’ market

• 6 oz vanilla greek yogurt*

• 1/2 banana, sliced

• 3/4 cup blueberries*

• 1 Tbsp wheat germ

• 3/4 cup strawberries*, sliced

• 1/3 cup TogaNola Granola Clusters*

INSTRUCTIONS: 1. Layer 1/4 cup strawberries, 1/4 cup blueberries, 1/3 container yogurt, 1/3 tablespoon wheat germ, 1/3 of the sliced banana, and about 2 tablespoons of granola in a large bowl.

2. Continue to build the parfait, repeating the layers until all of the ingredients are used completely.

Flash Back Friday Hello my Foodie Friends !

Part of the American summer road trip can include visits to roadside diners. What is your favorite childhood memory of summer food? I have so many childhood memories of eating with my family. My father was a

He loved stopping at a local diner as part of our day’s exploration. My father loved diners! The reason being that diners are best known for their history, tradition, an extensive menu selection, large portions of comfort foods at fair prices, quick service served with diner spirit and hearty meals. Chefs and cooks showcased their occupational skill and skillet set through offering huge portions of comfort food classics, while no- nonsense but friendly waitresses served as unofficial family to customers with their welcoming ways. Locals, many with townie and patriotic tendencies, interacted through face-to-face spoken words instead of through technological devices. Truck drivers sat at the counter after long days and nights of life on the road. White collar America, some as business travelers walking briskly over from the adjacent hotel, took that well-deserved break from another anticipated day in the rat race to lighten the day with some home-cooked food. Landscapers and construction workers with clean hands, for now, were hungry, immediately decisive on what to order, and needing to get to work soon. They wasted no time ordering food while showing a close camaraderie as if they were brothers.

INGREDIENTS • 1-3/4 cups all-purpose flour

• 1 large egg, room temperature

• 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

• 2 tablespoons brown sugar

• 1/4 cup peanut butter

• 1/2 cup chopped ripe banana

• 3 teaspoons baking powder

• 1-1/2 cups 2% milk

• 1/2 teaspoon salt

• 3 tablespoons butter, melted

• 1/2 cup semisweet chocolate chips • Maple syrup, optional

INSTRUCTIONS 1. In a large bowl, whisk flour, brown sugar, baking powder and salt. In another bowl, whisk egg, peanut butter, milk, melted butter and vanilla until blended. Add to flour mixture; stir just until moistened.

2. Fold in banana and chocolate chips.

3. Preheat griddle over medium heat. Lightly grease griddle.

4. Pour batter by 1/4 cupfuls onto griddle. Cook until bubbles on top begin to pop and bottoms are golden brown. Turn; cook until second side is golden brown. If desired, serve with additional bananas and syrup.

FREEZE OPTION: Freeze cooled pancakes between layers of waxed paper in an airtight container.

To use, place pancakes on an ungreased baking sheet, cover with foil and reheat in a preheated 375° oven until heated through, 5-10 minutes.

Applications for Choreographers SARATOGA SPRINGS — Nacre Dance Group is accepting applications for choreographers for Nacre Dance Group’s 6th annual “So, You Think You Can Choreograph?” performance.

This program is Nacre Dance Group’s annual competition designed to highlight upand-coming choreographers in modern dance. For the 2021 competition, selected choreographers will be asked to create a piece in-the-round at The Universal Preservation Hall on Saturday, Nov. 6.

This is a great opportunity for choreographers to present their work before a large audience.

Squeeze Coming to SPAC SARATOGA SPRINGS — Squeeze, featuring Chris Difford & Glenn Tilbrook have announced a 24-date headlining adventure - interspersed with 18 support dates for Daryl Hall & John Oates – that will be staged on Aug. 15 at Saratoga Performing Arts Center.

GLENS FALLS — The Hyde Collection has announced a rare opportunity to view a rare European treasure before it returns to Europe on Aug. 22.

The Hyde Collection is exhibiting an oil sketch by the great 17th-century Flemish painter, Anthony Van Dyck (15991641). Reportedly discovered in a barn in Kinderhook, New York, the old panel was acquired

by Hudson, New York collector Albert B. Roberts. After years of private research that engaged Bender Grosvenor, host of Fake or Fortune, Mr. Roberts’ convictions were vindicated when art historian Rev. Dr. Susan Barnes published the panel as an authentic work by Anthony Van Dyck in the March 2021 edition of the

eminent art history publication The Burlington Magazine.

The panel is a preparatory sketch for the Flemish artist’s St. Jerome that is now at the Museum Boijmans van Beuningen in Rotterdam, The Netherlands.

During its final month in upstate New York, the panel hangs in the company of the region’s finest collection of contemporaneous works at The Hyde Collection. Anthony Van Dyck’s Study for St. Jerome will be on view as part of The Hyde Collection’s exhibition Finding Van Dyck until Aug. 22. The Hyde Collection, located in Glens Falls, is open Thursday through Sunday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Upbeat on the Roof Presents: Sun is Poison on Aug. 12 SARATOGA SPRINGS — The Frances Young Tang Teaching Museum and Art Gallery at Skidmore College’s Upbeat on the Roof concert series continues Thursday, Aug. 12, at 6 p.m. with Sun is Poison.

A lo-fi solo project of Ballston Spa’s Will Seifart, Sun is Poison creates immersive works that meld the mechanical sounds of drum machines and synths with banjos, guitars, and honest and poignant lyrics. Sun is Poison will be making its Upbeat debut.

The Upbeat on the Roof concert takes place on the Tang lawn near the campus

outdoor volleyball courts. Visitors are welcome to bring blankets, chairs, and coolers, and are advised to arrive early as capacity is limited. Sembrich Hosts LiveStream of World Premiere Opera HARMONY with a Champagne Toast

BOLTON LANDING – The Sembrich will host a live-stream of Seagle Festival’s world premiere opera HARMONY with a champagne toast at 7 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 14. The evening will include a live introduction by The Sembrich’s Artistic Director Richard Wargo, a champagne toast, and a live-streamed screening of Seagle Festival’s world premiere event.

HARMONY, by Robert Carl and Russell Banks, is set in Keene Valley and includes numerous Adirondack references. The opera tells the story of young

composer Charles Ives, his love for highclass harmony Twichell, and the interference of Twichell family friend Mark Twain in their Betrothal – based on true events.

Annual Celebration of The Life Of David Cassidy in Spa City Aug. 16 SARATOGA SPRINGS — The David Cassidy Memorial Legacy Group hosts a celebration of the life of David Cassidy Monday, Aug. 16 at Putnam Place.

The event will kick off with an hour long “mix & mingle” at 3 p.m., followed by the Celebration of Life event from 4- 8 p.m.

Cassidy was a one-time resident of Saratoga Springs and is best known as a singer as well as an actor in the 1970s TV show “The Partridge Family.” The vocalist, composer, author, producer, director, actor and Broadway/ theatre entertainer was an avid horseman and philanthropist.

Cassidy died in November 2017

at the age of 67.

The event will feature the David Cassidy Remember Me Awards ceremony, as well as serving to honor 70’s Long Island based band Danny Calvagna & 45 RPM. Calvagna lost his life to COVID-19 and DCMLG will offer a special tribute.

In addition, videos showcasing three band, Sly Fox & The Hustlers, RBones Revival and Twice Removed will be shown on the big screen, and a silent auction will be held to raise money for various charities that Cassidy held dear to his heart including: The National Museum of Racing and Hall of Fame, The Thoroughbred

Retirement Foundation, Friends of Saratoga County Animal Shelter and Columbia Greene Humane Society.

The event will continue into the evening with a live performance by Joe’s Boys, performing a variety of David Cassidy’s solo work, music from the Partridge Family and “good time rock n’ pop” songs from the 60’s, 70’s 80’s and beyond. They will be joined by special guest, Vance Brescia.

SARATOGA SPRINGS — There was a place in Saratoga Springs on the cusp of the dawn of this most recent century that stood on the east side of Broadway and just north of Congress Park where locals consumed mugs of gourmet coffee and nestled into wingback chairs. “’Breakfast At Madeline’s,’” says Matt Witten, recalling both the name of the Saratoga cafe – Madeline’s - and the title of his book published in 1998 that was written at least partially there.

“I was in a time in my life when I was thinking: what do I really want to be writing?” Witten says. “I started out as a playwright and had three plays that were published around the world, but my favorite thing to do would be to put my feet up, have a cup of tea and read a mystery. I thought: Why don’t I try writing a mystery?

So, I wrote what I knew.”

Around the same time, he was hired to write an episode for the television series “Law & Order.” It went well. He was hired to come on staff and subsequently packed up his Saratoga Springs residence and his family and relocated to Los Angeles.

This month, Witten will return to Saratoga Springs with his soonto-be-released book “The Necklace,” and for the first time in a long

time stage a book-signing event in this local community. Events will take place in-person at Northshire Bookstore and at the Ballston Spa Public Library, as well as virtually at Saratoga Springs Public Library, and other area locations.

“The Necklace” is showcased as a fast-paced thriller starring a small-town waitress from upstate New York who fights to prove that the man who’s about to be executed for killing her daughter is actually innocent. The real killer is still free and as the clock ticks down, the woman takes on the FBI in a heart-pounding crusade for justice. “The Necklace” – which has been optioned for film

by Leonardo DiCaprio - is set in Lake Luzerne, where Witten spends the summer months.

“The story of ‘The Necklace’ was something I was just passionate about,” Witten says, explaining the novel was inspired by a local newspaper article he had read published here nearly a decade ago. “I read this article about a woman who was raising funds to witness the execution of guy who had killed her daughter.

The story just stuck with me, and nine years later I wrote the book.”

Witten wrote a number of books under the Jacob Burns mystery novel series and worked writing for television shows for

about 20 years - Law & Order, House, Pretty Little Liars, and CSI: Miami, among them.

“It was fun, but it was writing somebody else’s vision. After about 15 years I got tired of it and started writing pilots, which was great, and I got paid well, but they never got made, which is a very common thing,” he says.

“Like NBC will order 100 drama pilots to be written and they’ll only shoot 8 of the pilots and only 4 of them will make it to air. It was a little discouraging in that way, so I decided I was just going to go back to what I love best. My favorite thing is to read psychological thrillers. And this particular story (which became ‘The Necklace’) just drew me in.”

He has also written ‘The Necklace’ as a screenplay, which was bought

by Leonardo DiCaprio’s company.

While there is a consideration in thought of what the market will find enticing, Witten said he mostly writes about something he finds appealing with the hope that others will, too.

“I have tried on occasion in my career to write something that I thought would be commercial, but those different occasions did not work out. For me, with ‘The Necklace,’ I started out with the beginning and the end. I knew what the beginning was, and I knew who-done-it. In general, everything else I find out along the way,” he says. “As I’m writing, I’m five to ten pages ahead of myself. I’ll know what happens five to ten pages

from now, but I might not be too sure what happens twelve or fifteen pages from now. So, I’ll write in the morning and in the afternoon, or in bed at night I’m thinking, ‘Oh, OK I know what I want to write for the next five or ten pages.”

Reflecting on his Saratoga days and the medium in which he works, he acknowledges it’s been a long time gone and a lot has changed.

“With ‘Breakfast at Madeline’s,’ it was something I loved. My book was about a wannabe writer with two young sons and a wife who taught at ACC. It was fun to write. I wrote

“My first book signing was at the mall in downtown (Saratoga Springs) a couple of blocks over from Madeline’s and there were about 200 people there. It was such a good feeling, and all kinds of funny things happened. Dee Sarno – who was the head of Saratoga Arts Council - was very gracious that I had a character in there who was the head of Saratoga Arts Council, even though I kind of lampooned the Arts Council.

Just a joyful experience. And there were also two guys who worked at Madeline’s, each of whom came up to me privately and said: ‘It’s so cool you based the murderer on me,” Witten says with a laugh.

“Two different guys. So, I told them both: yes! I wrote three more books at Saratoga. One was after I was kind of ticked off at the elementary school principal at Division Street school, so I killed him off.” In subsequent books, a variety of residents and officials were also similarly “killed off,” with the creative use of a pen.

Much has changed in the world since the time Witten spent his days writing in Saratoga’s cafes, but some things have also remained. “What hasn’t changed: You just try to write a good story.”

ast week we looked at the early years of the Whitney cousins and their achievements prior to the Second World War. In this final installment we will see them at war and in the political arena. We will read of their great racehorses and the profound effect the Whitney family had on Saratoga, their adopted summer home.

WAR, POLITICS AND A RACEHORSE FOR THE AGES The 1940s would complicate the lives of the cousins, as it did so many Americans. The unprovoked attack on Pearl Harbor by The Empire of Japan brought our country into the Second World War. Jock and Sonny were quick entering the fray.

Jock joined the Army Air Forces where he served as an intelligence officer on the staff of General Ira Eaker, rising to the rank of Colonel. In 1944 he was taken prisoner by the Germans. In route to a prisoner of war camp, he was able to escape his captors. For meritorious service during the war Jock received both the Legion of Merit and the Bronze Star.

During the conflict Jock did manage to marry for a second time. In 1942 he wed Betsey Cushing, formerly the daughterin-law of Franklin D. Roosevelt. Along with Babe and Millie she was one of the glamorous Cushing sisters. They captured fame as socialites of the era, who through their beauty and charm ascended to the top of American Aristocracy.

Sonny also served with distinction during the war. On the outbreak of hostilities, he resigned as Chairman of the Board of Pan American Airlines. Without hesitation, he like Jock joined the Army Air Forces. Sonny served in both

India and the North Africa Theatre. As an intelligence officer with the Ninth Air Force, Cornelius Vanderbilt “Sonny” Whitney in government service. he was heavily involved with the planning of the Ploesti air raids. For his contributions to The firm J.H. Whitney & Co. invested in new ideas that the war effort Sonny received both the Legion of Merit and could not get bank approval. It became a resounding the Distinguished Service Medal. financial success. Jock and sister Joan’s Greentree Stable The war ended in 1945. The cousins came home to the states.

Two years later Sonny entered government service. Harry Truman was President and he liked what he saw in the newcomer to politics. “Give ‘em hell Harry” offered Sonny the position of Assistant Secretary of the Air Force. Sonny accepted the post. In 1949 he switched gears and headed over to the Commerce Department. There he served Under Secretary through 1950. During that period Sonny’s racing stable was riding high. His three-year-old colt Phalanx became a star during the 1947 racing season. To Sonny’s delight Phalanx won the third leg of the Triple Crown, the Belmont Stakes and was named as American Champion 3-Year-Old Colt. Four years later Sonny took all the marbles.

His colt Counterpoint gave him and Hall of Fame trainer Syl Veitch their second Belmont Stakes success. He continued his superb campaign with a win that Fall in the prestigious Jockey Club Gold Cup. For his efforts Counterpoint was named Horse of the Year for 1951. The following year the champ gave Sonny one final gift. He romped home in the Whitney Stakes here at the Spa in the last start of his career.

was reaching dizzying heights in the forties. In 1942 the barn sent out a three-year-old colt named Shut Out. He promptly took both the Kentucky Derby and Belmont Stakes. He also notched the Travers Stakes here at the Spa later that summer. Devil Diver was a force to be reckoned with on the racetrack for the years 1943-44. The Greentree Star dominated his opponents during that stretch. He was named Handicap Horse of the Year for both seasons. Devil Diver was enshrined in horse racing’s Hall of Fame in 1980.

In the early 1950s Greentree captured headlines in sports pages across the country. A brilliant thoroughbred named Tom Fool would take Greentree to the top of the horse racing universe. He was named Two-Year-Old Colt of the Year in 1951. In 1953 as a four-year-old he reached his peak crushing all opposition. Tom Fool ran the table. He took the New York Handicap Triple, then America’s supreme test for older horses for only the second time in its long history. To Jock’s elation he added the Whitney Stakes to his resume here at Saratoga. It was the fifth time a Greentree runner took the race. Tom Fool swept horse racing honors for the year 1953. He was named Horse of the Year, as well as best sprinter and handicap horse. In 1960 the champion was inducted into the Horse Racing Hall of Fame. Tom Fool stands high on the list of the greatest racehorses that ever competed on the American Turf.

The Whitney’s Greentree Stable raced several champion racehorses including Racing Hall of Famer, the great Tom Fool.

The cousins were lions in the world of business and finance and left an indelible mark on their favorite pastime, “The Sport of Kings.”

In 1956 Jock entered government foreign service. His close friend President Dwight Eisenhower offered him the position of the United States Ambassador to Great Britain... Who better for the diplomatic post than an American of British descent that could trace his roots to the Mayflower. John Hay Whitney, along with his elegant wife Betsy brought their brand of American dignity and style to the Court of St. James’s. The year 1961 marked the end of the Eisenhower administration. With that Jock boarded a flight from London to New York and made his return to the private sector.

1958 WAS A VERY GOOD YEAR Sonny Whitney was a busy man in the fifties. He was the owner of numerous flourishing business concerns. In 1950 he took the time from a busy schedule to establish the National Museum of Racing and Hall of Fame. He led a group of the sport’s most well-known personalities in making the conception become a reality. The following year the museum opened at the Canfield Casino in Congress Park. In 1955 it was moved to its present location on Union Avenue. A major turning point in the life of Sonny occurred in 1958. He wed Marie Louise Schroeder in January of that year. The union proved to be the happiest of his four marriages and would last until his death thirty-five years later. It was at this time that Sonny introduced Mary Lou to his Saratoga estate known as Cady Hill. She instantly became enamored with the property. With a keen eye, Mary Lou noticed that Saratoga, except fora short racing season, was pretty much a ghost town. The lake houses, where late night gambling and world class entertainment once flourished were a thing of the past. The Grand Hotels that had lined Broadway went the way of the wrecking ball earlier in the decade. Lodgings and restaurants were few and far between. Saratoga needed a benefactor, someone who had social standing, flair, a bigger than life personality

and connections with all the right people to bring about change. Add to that the Whitney mystique and Mary Lou was the perfect candidate. With Sonny’s blessing, his bride set out to energize and help create an atmosphere that would forge Saratoga into a world class destination.

PUBLISHER AND ART COLLECTOR The year Sonny wed Mary Lou, his cousin Jock entered the newspaper business. He spent a good portion of the next decade as the publisher of the New York Herald Tribune.

Jock was also busy building one of the largest private art collections in the world. He amassed world class paintings by the Great Masters of the Seventeenth Century and those of the Impressionist Movement of the late 1800s. After Jock’s death, the magnificent collection was disbursed at his wife Betsey’s discretion. Many of the notable works were bequeathed to their favorite museums, the National Art Gallery and The Museum of Modern Art. Jock’s beloved Greentree reached a milestone in 1968. Stage Door Johnny took the 100th running of the Belmont Stakes. It was the fourth time the celebrated stable took the race. It also marked the last of seven wins in Triple Crown events for Greentree. The stable continued to race quality horse until 1982. During that year Jock passed away. It spelled the end for Greentree. It’s famed salmon pink with black striped sleeved silks were retired. The stock was sold off and horse racing had lost one of its greatest names.

HELLO MARY LOU. WE LOVE YOU Mary Lou embarked on her venture to enhance Saratoga.

The Whitney Gala at the Casino in Congress Park became her trademark event. She enticed the rich and famous to attend the annual August charity ball. It became the main attraction if the racing season. Mary Lou was soon anointed as “The Queen of Saratoga.” She along with Sonny were among the early benefactors of the Performing Arts Center

in the Spa State Park. The amphitheater brought Saratoga to the forefront of the summer music and dance scene.

The Philadelphia Orchestra and New York City Ballet took center stage to open the season. Then it was time for the great entertainers and rock bands to perform in front of packed houses. Mary Lou also worked with Saratoga dignitaries and businessmen to further the development of the downtown area. Another project that she innovated was the formation of the National Museum of Dance and Hall of Fame. Mary Lou had a special interest in the welfare of the backstretch employees. Along with John Hendrickson, she worked tirelessly to better the conditions for those who made their living on the backside of the track. To chronicle all her achievements in the rebirth and promoting of Saratoga would require much more attention than is available here.

THE END OF AN ERA In 1992, at the age of 93 Sonny passed away. He and his cousin Jock were the last of the Whitney line to live the life of celebrity. They carried the family name to even greater heights than their ancestors. The cousins were lions in the world of business and finance and left an indelible mark on their favorite pastime, “The Sport of Kings.” We will never see the likes of them again. Saratoga is a better place for having felt their presence here as a part of its storied past.

FINAL REMARK This weekend will mark the ninety-third running of the Whitney Stakes. The historic event has cemented its place as one of horse racing’s most sought after prizes. Many of the sport’s most well-known stars have their names inscribed in the annals of the race. Count War Admiral, Discovery, Equipoise, Tom Fool, Kelso, Carry Back and Dr Fager among them. It is a lasting tribute to “The Fabulous Whitney’s of Saratoga.”

eek five of the 2021 racing season at Saratoga Race Course beginning August 9 is actually highlighted by action off the racetrack as the yearlings sales at Fasig- Tipton take place for an astounding 100th year.

This year the famed Fasig-Tipton catalogue of Select Yearlings at the Saratoga Sale listed 210 yearlings.

They will be auctioned on Monday and Tuesday, August 9 and 10 in the Humphrey S. Finney Sales Pavilion on East Avenue. Sessions will begin each evening at 6:30 p.m. and are open to the public.

The public is invited into the auction hall and can watch the action outside at the bar area where the public mingles with the elite to watch the bidding on numerous televisions. The public gets to view each yearling as it enters the sales ring where bidding can top $1 million for the sales topper. If you have never gone to these auctions, you should make

a point to go and see the action. Admission and parking are free and food and drink are available for purchase.

Due to Covid there was no sale in 2020 (the first time since World War II that the annual Saratoga Sale was not held) but the 2019 sale saw 135 yearlings sell over the two nights for an average of $411,459. More than half the yearlings sold in that sale went for $350,000 or more so keep your hand down lest you unwittingly come to own an expensive thoroughbred.

After 100 years this year for the first time you can pay for your yearling purchase with cryptocurrency.

On the track the stakes action actually hits a mid-meet lull with a mere 8 stakes races, only 2 of which are graded. Both of the week’s graded stakes races are run on Saturday August 14 with the highlight the Grade I Fourstardave with a purse of $500,000 at a mile on the grass.

The other graded stakes race on Saturday is the Grade II Saratoga Special for two-year-olds at 6 ½ furlongs. The rest of the week has minor stakes for New York breds and sprinters.

Saturday’s Fourstardave is a new stakes race by Saratoga standards having first been run in 1985 as the Daryl’s Joy and then renamed the Fourstardave in 1995. Fourstardave himself was dubbed the alliterative nickname of “Sultan of Saratoga” after

winning a race at Saratoga every year from 1987 to 1994. Fourstardave is one of only a few thoroughbreds buried at Claire Court on the Saratoga backstretch. The gelding started 100 times in his career and has several places in Saratoga on and off the track named after him.

The race itself is one of the few graded turf races at a flat mile which on the Saratoga course leads to a very short run into the first turn. An inside post position is therefore a big advantage. The race has been won by some tremendous horses including Hall of Famers Lure and Wise Dan the latter winning it twice. Among the 15 horses nominated for this year’s renewal 5 are trained by Chad Brown and 2 by meet leading trainer Michael Maker. One possible entrant is European star Lope Y Fernandez. Stakes winners

Raging Bull and Rinaldi are also possible starters.

Saturday also sees the running of the Saratoga Special for two-year olds at the elongated sprint distance of six and one-half furlongs.

The Saratoga Special has been run in one form or another since 1901 and has been won by numerous champions many of whom went on to win classic races.

Wednesday highlights horses bred in the State of New York going a distance of ground. The Evan Shipman Handicap is run once around the mile and an eighth Saratoga dirt oval and offers a purse of $100,000. The Evan Shipman is named after the famed racing columnist for the long defunct New York Morning Telegraph. Shipman was considered one of the world’s authorities on thoroughbred and harness racing and breeding. A colorful character, Shipman was a friend of Ernest Hemingway and a chapter is devoted to Shipman in Hemingway’s novel - A Moveable Feast. The Wednesday card also offers the Mahony - a race for three-year-olds on the grass at five and one-half furlongs for a purse of $120,000.

On Thursday the filly counterpart to the Evan Shipman is run. The Saratoga Dew Handicap at the same mile and one-eighth distance on dirt for New York bred fillies offers the same $100,000 purse as the Shipman. Saratoga Dew was a New York bred

filly who won an Eclipse Award as Champion Three-Year-Old Filly in 1992. Trainer Rudy Rodriguez has trained three of the last four winners of this race.

Friday offers a restricted stakes named after Tale of the Cat at 6 furlongs for older horses with a purse of $120,000.

Sunday completes the week with the filly counterpart to the Mahony – The Galway. At the same distance of five and one-half furlongs but this time for three-year-old fillies it offers the same purse of $120,000.

ajja Thompson has been a horse racing fan since he was a child, but he never knew that he would make a career in the sport. Now, Thompson has evolved into the leaders in New York Thoroughbred racing, especially here in Saratoga Springs.

Thompson became the Executive Director of the New York Thoroughbred Breeders in December.

After working for the New York Racing Association in the Communications Department and Human Resources since 2011, Thompson pursued the opportunity after Jeffrey Cannizzo became Senior Director of Government Affairs for NYRA. Thompson has taken the reigns of the NYTB that promotes and advances the state’s Thoroughbred breeding and racing industry through its incentives, rewards and other programs.

He also leads a program that has grown over the past decade under Cannizzo and the Board of Directors’ guidance as horses like two-time international Grade 1 winner Mind Your Biscuits, 2018 Whitney winner Diversify, and last year’s Belmont and Travers winner Tiz the Law reflect the program’s success.

“This was a great opportunity,” Thompson said.

“Jeffrey Cannizzo and the Board really ushered a great heyday for the New York-bred program with

Mind Your Biscuits and Diversify. The program really took a step above to become the best state and regional program.”

Before developing a career in horse racing, Westbury, NY-native grew up being a fan of the sport with his family, including his uncle, Larry Stewart, who is a breeder in Williston, Fla. and helped produce multiple graded stakes winner Get Funky.

“He used to take me to the track, and we initially went to Belmont, Aqueduct, and OTB,” the 36-yearold Thompson said. “When we moved to Florida, we went to Gulfstream Park and Gulfstream Park West.”

Through his teenage years, Thompson continued buying and studying the Daily Racing Form while following the New York and Florida circuit.

Eventually, those study habits were redirected to history and philosophy at Florida State.

Thompson considered law school after graduating from Florida State. However, he opted working for Verizon Marketing in South Florida as a way to make and save money, but he didn’t find the job as satisfying and was looking for a career change.

“I thought about the student loan debt,” he said. “That was the deterrent for me as to work for a couple of years. I really wasn’t enjoying it. I had thought about what I could do.”

Since Thompson still enjoyed going to the track, Stewart suggested a career in horse racing. Taking that suggestion, Thompson applied to positions at NYRA. “Obviously, I didn’t have the experience to become a trainer. I was definitely interested in the business end,” Thompson said. “I sent out some letters and Julie Levine, recruiter for NYRA, contacted me for an interview. Pretty much from there, everything took off.”

For nine years, Thompson worked in the Communications Department by writing stories, notes, and recaps before becoming a Recruitment and Employee Engagement Specialist. Also over the last couple of years, he has served as Vice President for the Turf Publicists of America.

One of Thompson’s memorable experiences during his time with NYRA was seeing the turnout for recent Hall of Fame inductee and Triple Crown winner American Pharoah’s gallop over the Saratoga track just a couple of days before the Travers in 2015.

“That is one moment that I will never forget,” he said.

“It was a gallop one-time around the track and 20,000 people came for the workout. That shows the love from Saratoga and the surrounding communities just have for racing in which American Pharoah can draw 20,000 people.”

As executive director, Thompson is still connected to NYRA as a member of the Board of Directors. Beyond that, he also enjoys working with breeders and farm

owners that include Old Tavern Farm, Song Hill Farm and McMahon of Saratoga Thoroughbreds, as well as legislators and other facets of the horse racing industry, to promote the program.

“There is a lot of excitement and buzz going into the sale,” he said. “That will be the highlight of the program and it will display the best-of-thebest of yearlings. From what I have heard from bloodstock agents, it is the strongest book of the sale that they have seen.”

“I like the challenge to promote and grow the program not only at the New York-bred sales, but also attracting farm owners and working with the legislature to show the agricultural impact that farm owners and breeders make to the state with jobs and land preservation,” he said.

Within a decade, Thompson has watched his career evolve in a similar way that the New York-bred program has developed successfully.

Though, he knows there are variables that made it happen.

Along with the agricultural impact, Thoroughbred racing in New York is responsible for 19,000 jobs and more than $3 billion in annual economic impact, which includes 2,600 jobs and $250 million in the Saratoga Springs region.

“People may show up to the races on a Saturday,” he said. “But behind that, it’s the person who ships the horse from the farm, it’s the farrier who shoes the horse, and it’s the feed company that sends the feed. Those are the jobs created from the racing industry and done right here in Saratoga and throughout the state.”

One of Thompson’s highlighted events in his position is the Fasig-Tipton New York-bred yearling sales scheduled for Aug. 15-16. After last year’s sales were canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Thompson believes there is a lot to look forward to this year’s sales.

“I have been blessed. Of course, there is hard work and a little bit of luck,” he said. “Things have fell into the right place for me to have that opportunity to help lead the New York Thoroughbred Breeders and help contribute to the New York-bred program. I have definitely worked hard to get to this moment, and I will continue to work hard and do my best to make sure the New York-bred program remains the best in the country.”

SATURDAY, AUGUST 7 WHITNEY DAY: Three-time Grade 1 winner Swiss Skydiver is set headline Saturday’s Grade 1, $1 million Whitney which offers an automatic berth to the Breeders’ Cup Classic. The filly, victorious in last year’s Preakness Stakes and Alabama, will try to become the first female to capture the Whitney since Personal Ensign in 1988.

To do so, she will have to defeat Maxfield, considered the top older horse in training, and Knicks Go, the Pegasus World Cup winner. The blockbuster Whitney Day card will also include the Grade 1, $500,000 Longines Test for sophomore fillies and the $1 million Saratoga Derby Invitational, the second jewel of the Turf Triple series for sophomore males in its first running with Grade 1 status.

Whitney Day will also feature the Grade 2, $250,000 Glens Falls for fillies and mares on turf, and the $120,000 Fasig-Tipton Lure.

SUNDAY, AUGUST 8 SARATOGA OAKS INVITATIONAL: Sunday of Whitney weekend concludes with three graded stakes highlighted by the upgraded Grade 3, $700,000 Saratoga Oaks Invitational, the second leg of the Turf Triple series for sophomore fillies. Team USA Lax Visits Saratoga

Saratoga TODAY SARATOGA SPRINGS — Team USA Men’s and Women’s Lacrosse geared up in their red, white, and blue to practice in Saratoga this past week.

The Saratoga Youth Lacrosse Association hosted the teams at their lacrosse complex for practices on Aug. 2, 3, and 4 in preparation for their exhibition games in Lake Placid on Aug. 3.

These practices and exhibition games, as Skip Lichtfuss, Director of National Teams & High Performance for USA Lacrosse, explained, also served as an “exploration tryout camp” for the national team. The United States will field both a men’s and women’s national team at the 2022 World Games, a multisport Olympic-style event, in Birmingham, AL next summer.

These practices in Saratoga were the first co-training sessions with both the men’s and women’s teams on the same field at the same time, as they are adapting to the new “sixes” style of play.

“Sixes” is fast-paced version of lacrosse played with fewer players (6 v. 6) on a smaller field (70 x 36 meters), and a condensed game length (four 8-minute quarters).

This is the style of lacrosse that will be played at the 2022 World Games.

Lichtfuss compared the adoption of the new style of lacrosse to the addition of 3 v. 3 basketball in the Olympics and rugby 7’s; it will keep the rules of the game consistent across the men’s and women’s teams and the style of lacrosse consistent across countries.

“It will allow for a better showing of the sport,” said Lichtfuss. Adding that the new style and these practices are a

“great way to expose younger players to lacrosse.”

Some players on the team are collegiate-level athletes and some are pros in the PLL (Premier Lacrosse League). They come from across the United States to play on the teams, but one player in particular got the chance to return to her hometown.

Amy Moreau, who sported #43, is a rising senior at the University of Massachusetts Amherst and graduated from

Schuylerville High School in 2018.

She grew up playing on the fields at the Saratoga Youth Lacrosse Association complex and has now come full circle to practice there as a part of Team USA. “Coming back here to play with USA across my chest has been

a surreal experience,” said Moreau.

The Saratoga Youth Lacrosse Association is a 501(c)(3) organization that provides Saratoga’s youth with an opportunity to play one of the fastest growing sports – lacrosse. To learn more about USA Lacrosse visit usalacrosse.org.

Boys Basketball Summer Camp Spend the week working on drills and scrimmages in preparation for the Championship Friday Awards Ceremony.

This camp is for ages 5-14, and runs from August 9 to August 13 from 8:45-11:45 a.m. at East Side Rec (226 Lake Ave). Fees are $80 for city residents and $90 for non-city residents. After August 2, fees increase to $105 for city residents and $115 for noncity residents.

Players will need to bring water and sneakers. They will each receive a tee shirt. Coordinator is Tony DeVizzio, SSHS Basketball Coach.

Boxing Summer Camp This is non contact camp to learn proper boxing technique and conditioning. Light contact is available for those wishing to take it to the next level.

Skaters need to come prepared with their own mask, water, helmet, pads, and skateboard. Coordinator is Benj Gleeksman.

Saratoga TODAY SARATOGA SPRINGS — Saratoga Cub Scout packs held a bike rodeo this past weekend, where the kids learned about bike safety from local law enforcement.

On Saturday, July 31 Cub Scout Packs 12 and 16 held a joint bike rodeo at the American Legion on West Avenue. Kids completed a bike safety course, and then received a bike safety talk from officers with the Saratoga Springs Police Department. It was also a recruiting event for aspiring girl and boy scouts.

The course consisted of weaving and maneuvering, short radius turning, speed control, changing direction, changing lanes, mounting and dismounting, and more, with the older Boy Scouts in attendance as the designated pit crew.

“If they grow up knowing how to be safe on a bicycle, then they will know to be safe when driving a car,” said John E. Koch, Cub Scouts Unit Commissioner, about what the kids were learning during bike safety day.

In the bike safety talk the scouts and aspiring scouts learned important tips on how to wear a helmet properly, how to adjust their bike, and more. Sergeant Evan Fort and Officer Glenn Barrett with the Saratoga Springs Police Department and Deputies Jared Gardner and Nick Hess with the Saratoga County Sheriff ’s

Office spent some time riding around on their bikes with the kids afterwards.

“We use bikes for public relations, getting out into the community more,” said Officer Barrett. “Patrolling on bikes and on bike paths lets us interact on a different level. If you ever see us out, stop and say hello.”
