Greatest upset in American horse racing On August 13, 1920, during the Sanford Stakes at Saratoga, Man O’War suffered the only defeat in his legendary career. He lost at the wire to a horse named Upset – a name that established the word in the lexicon of sports defeats.

Horses of Course Other than sparkling mineral springs, Saratoga is best known for horses and racing. Signs of this passion are everywhere in Saratoga – from horse head bike racks downtown to posters, jewelry and fine art in the many gift stores, to a lovingly restored and very popular carousel in Congress Park, in the heart of Saratoga.

The most obvious evidence of this devotion to all things equine, of course, is the Saratoga thoroughbred racecourse itself – referred to simply as “the flat track.” It’s America’s oldest, dating to 1864 (opened during the Lincoln administration) and still attracting crowds of up to 50,000. The sport’s best horses and their riders live, work and play in Saratoga for six weeks during the summer. Thirty six days of racing take place

-- including the famous Travers Stakes race -- starting in late July and ending, always, on Labor Day.

It’s the Cooperstown of the horse industry, including an annual induction ceremony for horseracing’s finest.

1700 gaming machines and Vapor Night Club for late-night entertaining and special events.

Just up the street, on Union Avenue, the National Racing Museum honors horses, owners, trainers and jockeys with colorful and interactive displays, including a mechanical racehorse that gives you a chance to experience what it’s like to ride.

Racing’s other half – harness racing – has a home at the Saratoga Casino and Raceway. Standardbreds compete for significant money here and the backdrop is a busy casino with

If the business of horses had a third half, it would be the sport of polo, which is gaining in popularity every year. Saratoga Polo has big plans for expansion beyond

its pastoral field just west of downtown, with Adirondack Mountain views, to include a clubhouse, on-site lodging and a host of upscale amenities. Patrons of polo can delight in a day of high intensity competition, “stomping the divots” between chukkers, and always a guaranteed fun day in the summer sun.

Golf in Saratoga is like a microcosm of golf in America. In a single weekend you can air it out on a mountain course in the foothills of the Adirondacks, play a meandering valley course or be thoroughly challenged by a links-style course that rewards course management, patience and accuracy. Fifteen top rated courses are in the area, including top-ranked Saratoga National. The golf course at Spa State Park which opened as a 9 hole track in 1935, now offers a full 18 holes of championship golf and a 9 hole executive course.

The birth of the potato chip .. In 1853, a great moment in American cuisine occurred with the birth of the potato chip at Moon’s famed Lake House restaurant in Saratoga. Whether it was by accident or as an inspired piece of cooking is unknown. However, patrons recognized a good thing when they tasted it!

relatively few people know that the potato chip was born right here in Saratoga Springs, and those who do may have heard the urban myth that a gentleman named crumb was the inventor – which seems too good to be true. But it is true. George crumb invented the potato chip out of frustration with a dissatisfied customer not happy with French

fries. It’s a long story – best discussed perhaps over a club sandwich and chips. (By the way, the club sandwich was born here too). Saratoga is so much more than sandwiches and chips. Fine dining establishments can be found on Broadway, off Broadway, down the hill from Broadway, around the lake, in pockets of Saratoga

Museums in Saratoga seem to be around every corner. The National Museum of Dance, the National Bottle Museum, the Tang Museum at Skidmore, the New York State Military Museum, the Saratoga Automobile Museum and many more. Plus, don’t miss Grant’s cottage, the General Phillip Schuyler

House, Saratoga National Historical Park and the Saratoga Monument and Saratoga National Battlefield Park, site of the turning point of the American revolution.

The battle that changed history Flush with his victory at Fort Ticonderoga, General John Burgoyne was confident he could stop the American rebellion once and for all. Instead, on October 17, 1777, after days of terrible fighting, he surrendered to the Americans at Saratoga – ranked as one of the 15 most decisive battles in world history.

Queen of the Spas

518.584.1531 • www.discoversaratoga.org

The history of Saratoga Springs begins with water – and the city’s unique world class mineral springs are still a top reason to come to Saratoga – to “take the waters” – taste test nearly 20

different carbonated springs or just relax with a mineral bath, a soothing massage, loofah scrub or seaweed wrap – visitors and guests love Saratoga’s famous spas. Saratoga’s natural springs have always

been considered to have extraordinary healing powers. Saratoga’s distinctive bottled waters are still shipped all over the world – easily recognized in their bright cobalt blue bottles.

Next time you watch a performance at the beautiful Saratoga Performing Arts center, ask yourself this question “do I hear a waterfall – or not?” Based on a difference of opinion about hearing this lovely natural phenomenon, manual valves usually turn off the waterfall for the Orchestra – but not for ballet performances.

There’s no finer home for the arts than Saratoga. One of the most exceptional performing arts spaces in the country is here in Saratoga – each year the Saratoga Performing Arts center is the summer

home of the New York city Ballet and the Philadelphia Orchestra; in addition, “SPAc” hosts rock concerts, contemporary dance events and a variety of festivals, including the Saratoga Jazz Festival and the Saratoga Wine

A Great American Downtown Victorian Streetwalks And Architectural Marvel

Few downtowns in America are as vibrant, thriving, historically significant or architecturally beautiful as Saratoga’s. It’s the perfect mix of independently owned shops and national retailers, with enticing boutiques, cozy bookstores, charming antiques and outdoor outfitters. Downtown Saratoga is a recent winner of the “Great American Place” and “America in Bloom”

awards and it’s easy to see why – vast flower beds are on nearly every corner, lovely Congress Park bursts with blooms in the heart of downtown, signage is clear and helpful and parking is free. Saratoga is an eminently walkable community and any stroll down Broadway (Saratoga’s Main Street) to North Broadway or through Congress Park to Union Avenue allows you

to enjoy a pleasing mix of lush greenery, architectural diversity and upscale historic homes.
