01_ARCHITECTURAL DESIGN THESIS Redevelopment of Rome suburbs: Project of an urban park and a city public library at the “Alessandrino” district.

Vuoti urbani sconnessi

The thesis aims at the rehabilitation of the so called “Città Alessandrina,” area located in the eastern outskirts of Rome, that lies between the disctrict of Centocelle and Tor Tre Teste. The area is characterized by the presence of many “gaps” unconnected to one another. Those gaps have to be reordered: this turns out to be the great potential of this area. A new system of connection and distances of those gaps is the basic element of the masterplan, together with the construction of new facilities including a library, a cultural center and a covered market. all these facilities are inserted into a linear urban park. This mending is favored by the existence of ancient Alexandria Aqueduct: the archeology, over the centuries, has preserved the nature of urban void of these places, born with no rules, is not designed nor designed to exploit those who are their potential. Thus was born the project, a master plan designed not in a timely manner and articulate but dictated by the presence of ‘Agro Romano, who creeps to voluntarily’ within the city.

Vuoti urbani riconnessi

The public library provides access to a new neighborhood and directs the inhabitants of the area, walk through the cars along the aqueduct, from Togliatti to the park of Tor Tre Teste, the public library at the cultural center. The building, through the underground architecture, exploiting the morphological characters of the area, encouraging the inclusion of the Roman town and inside of respecting the need to enhance the urban voids.

2007_4 Star Superior Hotel, Via del Porto Fluviale, Rome The project area is located in Ostiense district in Rome, nearby the Tevere river and the Ex-Gasometer. The district is famous for its many areas in which lie the “archeology” of what, in the early twentieth century, was the largest industrial center of the city. All this area is undergoing urban renewal. The project involves the construction of a a Star Superior Hotel, including 304 standard double rooms, 7 suites, a stylish restaurant open to the city, a convention center, a spa, a pool and 5 shops, all with related services. The idea of this architectural design is to separate the building into two distinct parts: a two floors basement containing the majority of services, and a tower that rises up to 22th floor, containing all the rooms. The two parts are connected through the 3rd floor, which has, with its adjacent roof, an area dedicated to the spa and to the pool.

The tower wants to remember Ostiense’s Industrial archeology, first of all the Gasometer, and Industry evolution: the steel coating makes the prospects in constant motion by the hand of man, as the industry is. The basement instead wants to remember, in opposition to the tower, the static architecture of Rome.

“The line has revolutioned our view of the pictorial surface by changing the idea that form is no more than a patch of colours.” ALEKSANDR RODCHENKO, 1921

“Che figura mi fai fare?”: Figuration exercises During the three phases of the one-week workshop I experienced several transitions between different levels of representation, from the linear and bidimensional language of signs to space compositions, then to plastic shapes to use for architectural design.

Below the starting image: Sheet of notebook, 1919, Aleksandr Rodchenko

2007_Achitectural design Workshop: “Che figura mi fai fare” FIRST PHASE: Work with and on “sign” We started in group the first phase of the workshop by choosing one of the four Rodchenko’s sketches. Through observation, interpretation and imagination we have extrapolated an architectural concept from the simple lines of the sketch, which represented the plan of a town with a harbor, and the strong border line between land and sea.

SECOND PHASE: Work with and on “space compositions”: Starting point of the second phase of the workshop is the “first phase sketch” made up by another group participant. Transition between “urban planning” to the “design of an object”: the concept of a bench used as a staging area in an urban context is transformed to the entrance to a subway station, a place of passage and rest.

THIRD PHASE: Work with and on “plastic shapes”: During the third phase we had to develop the design of another group, a suburban “central-pole” destined to a exchange node for public transport. The aim is to create a place that attracts people thanks to its many activities: so we can find shops, offices, restaurants, a public park and other services.

2008/2009_Visual communication and branding

The perception of an image or a text and their communicability are two basic elements for their effective functioning: these are two examples of graphic exercises done during different university courses. These exercises were used to learn the rules governing “graphic design”, such as the development of brand image through visual communication. Below we can see the logo design for the “Casa della danza”, which takes its inspiration from ballerina’s feet, giving rise to a simple sinuous shape celebrating dance. With the logo we can see designed the business cards which show their particularity because of the correspondence between the shape of the logo and the card. Finally the poster for the inaugural event of the “Casa della danza”. The left page shows the design for a model of “Information Totem” to be carried out on the occasion of a show on the Architect Pietro Aschieri: during the show the buildings designed by him are marked with a totem.

Sketches & draws

The design of atelier-houses for graduate students at the Bauhaus campus in Weimar is made up of two blocks of four. The basic architectural concept is the different exposition of public and private atelier-houses’ zones. Each of them is developed on two levels. The ground floor is more public, and includes the common areas such as the kitchen, the lunch and the study area. These common spaces are the most flexible ones and are adaptable to every need. The loft floor, which is the sleeping area, is more private. This kind of plan makes it possible to open and join all the common areas for any shows and exhibitions.

Gran Prix de Rome “Premio Piranesi 2009” Subject of the competition is the creation of a “new generation Museum”, located where the roman emperor Adriano’s architecture are. The Museum concept is based on three exposure modes: “Material mode”, characterized by a classical museum project, which involves the design of an architectural shell and the location of a collection of physical artifacts, original or reproductions (VillaAdriana); “Immaterial mode”, characterized by an installation project based on the relationship between urban space and a Hadrian monument (Piazza di Pietra); “Identitary mode”, characterized by a visual communication project and corporate identity for the museum.
