Build. Grow. Inspire. 2018-2019 ANNUAL REPORT

At The Discovery School, we believe in opening our minds and hearts so we can discover the knowledge and ideals to build a better world. Our prepared and unique learning environments support our students through a gradual evolution from pure Montessori, to a blended curriculum, to International Baccalaureate over the course of our students’ academic career. The 2018-19 school year was one of great significance to our school community. Through the leadership of our Board of Trustees and and all our Build. Grow. Inspire. investors, we actualized an ambitious strategic plan to enhance our campus with the construction of the I.D.R.E.A.M. building and open our inaugural Middle School program. We also thank Alexis Kane for her stalwart stewardship of this work as our Capital Campaign Coordinator. This auspicious occasion was widely celebrated by our students, founders, alumni, parents, grandparents, our talented faculty & staff, and our entire Jacksonville Beach community. The Discovery School Be The Bridge Annual Fund was also widely supported and a huge success. We thank Razan Farmand, and the entire Discovery Fund cabinet, for their incredible leadership, creativity, and support. Thank you for believing in Discovery! It is because of gifts like yours that our teachers are provided personalized professional development opportunities that deepen their practice and agency in positively impacting all of our Discovery children. As a school, we are committed not only to our mission, but to the high ideals of ethical and active governance, sound planning, and cultivating an inclusive and vibrant community that promotes knowledge, creativity, independent thinking, and mutual respect. In 2020 we will be celebrating our 30th anniversary and as we prepare to celebrate that momentous milestone, we have worked diligently to be poised to look to the future and steer our efforts toward providing a globally minded education and a connected community. It is only through generous support like yours that we are able to instill a lifelong love of learning in our students. On behalf of the Board of Trustees and all of us at The Discovery School, we thank you for your investment in our children and are pleased to share our 2018-19 Annual Report. We value your trust and commitment as we continue to work to ensure our beloved school is able to serve the larger community for many years to come.

With gratitude,

KIM BEDNAREK Head of School

Daring students to dream big!

OUR MISSION

We open our hearts and minds so we can discover the knowledge and ideals to build a better world.

History in the making WHEN WE MELD IMAGINATION WITH COMPASSION AND ACADEMIC EXCELLENCE, THERE’S NO LIMIT TO WHAT OUR STUDENTS CAN ACHIEVE.

At The Discovery School, our teachers never lose sight of the fact that the student sitting before them might one day discover a general vaccine for cancer, dance at the Met, capture a World Cup, or unite a community through public service. Each and every day, we encourage creativity, independent thinking, empathy, and problem solving – the very tools our students will need to live a full, rich life – and perhaps make powerful, positive changes in the lives of others as they follow their own path. This environment helps shape their confidence and competence through an overarching belief that our students should be able and ready to change the world. We believe that childhood is sacred, not to mention adventurous, creative, curious, imaginative, innocent, playful, and filled with wonder. Through independent learning, collaboration, and focus, we empower our students to ask big questions and see the world in a new way. We know that there is great value in not only being resourceful but reflective, self-aware but selfless, confident but kind; qualities that motivate our students to become their best selves. Our focus is not just to prepare these bright bring young minds for the future, but more importantly, to enable our students to create it, and leave their own, unique and irreplaceable mark on the world.

Fostering an environment of exploration

IN 2020, WE CELEBRATE THREE DECADES OF SHAPING SUCCESSFUL STUDENTS.

Founded in 1990, The Discovery School is a progressive, independent school located in Jacksonville Beach serving children ages 18 months through 8th grade. The School’s beautiful six-acre campus is adorned with a myriad of natural features such as a canopy of mature Live Oaks, natural pathways, and an inner courtyard that lends a village-style atmosphere. Discovery is proud to be accredited by the Florida Council of Independent Schools, the American Montessori Society, and the International Baccalaureate Primary Years Programme.

OUR VISION? TO CULTIVATE AN INCLUSIVE AND VIBRANT COMMUNITY THAT PROMOTES KNOWLEDGE, CREATIVITY, INDEPENDENT THINKING AND MUTUAL RESPECT.

The Discovery School is proud that our students’ educational path is rooted in a renowned educational philosophy, Montessori, and advances to a globally recognized program, the International Baccalaureate Primary Years Programme. In both curricular frameworks, children must actively engage in the learning process rather than participate passively. Allowing students to be involved in their own learning develops the whole child as an inquirer, both within and beyond the classroom.
