For the year of 2009, Nathan’s Famous has chosen to focus on the strength of the company, and it’s ability to implement a sound business model every year. To convey the foundation and steadiness of the company, I chose to dissect and reveal the history of the original Nathan’s Famous Nickel Hot Dog Stand in Coney Island, New York. The loud chaotic cover references the overwhelming signage of the original stand, and the structured interior of the report represents the organization of the inner-workings of the company.


2. FLOUR POT | IDENTITY

The Flour Pot Bakery Pot strives for a healthy diet with high quality, natural ingredients and environmentally friendly practices. The bakery’s interior space is inviting and warm with natural lighting and eclectic funky displays advertising baked goods. This identity system was designed to convey the unique and handmade qualities of the bakery. The hand-drawn type was inspired by the wiry Christmas lights arranged throughout the dining area. I chose to design a menu that could be carried home without hassle. I placed all menu items on a baguette carry-out bag so that customers could carry the menu home easily while simultaneously being able to enjoy a Flour Pot baked good. An alternate menu for lunch is available for guests who dine in.

3. MY CLUMP OF CONNECTIONS | MAPPING

My fascination with the random and ridiculous data that exists in my cell phone inspired me to map it out. I wanted to be able to visualize the relationship between the people I talk to on a day to day basis to those individuals that I talk to on occasion—or in some cases never at all. To visualize all of my personal connections, I created this physical map out of string and yarn to bring to life this metaphor of linking individuals to myself and to each other.

Oak Park Stage is an up-and-coming progressive theatre located in a suburb just outside of Chicago. The theatre needed a fresh and modern identity to express them as a whole. I designed this visual identity system for the theatre to capture the attention of a young, stylish and edgy demographic. The package includes letterhead, business card and envelope as well as a newspaper ad, magazine ad, promotional poster and a set of tickets.

Deranged Exotic Hot Sauce Co. specializes in finding uncommon ingredients from around the world to concoct new and exotic flavors of hot sauce. This catalog portrays the essence of the product – something that is rare, bizarre, loud and flavorful.

The Department of Recreational Sports at the University of Florida distributes a magazine every semester. For fall 2009, the goal was to create a fresh new feel for the magazine, to motivate the students to take part in Recreational Sports at the University of Florida and to get them excited for the brand new year. I accomplished the fresh feel for the magazine by using a simple palette of bright colors against black. I designed very organized and easy to follow tables to enhance the clean feel of the magazine.

Liberty Books Publishing Company required a new visual system that would express the subject matter of their books while at the same time standing strong aesthetically. I redesigned the covers of the books “The Illustrated Man” by Ray Bradbury, “Galapagos” by Kurt Vonnegut and “Sophie’s World” by Jostein Gaardner using a new and consistent design system throughout. Each of my cover designs depends on type to set the mood of the book. The system works conceptually as it speaks of the content. The use of dynamic type-treatment, accents of color and white space allows for the covers to thrive visually.


8 . M O N S T E R S | I L L U S T R AT I O N

These illustrations were constructed out of cut paper and magazine clippings. I designed a book of various monsters that are cute and playful yet awkward and a little bit off-kilter. I was inspired by a visit to Gainesville’s Kanapaha Botanical Gardens where I discovered a number of extremely strange yet beautiful plants with bulbous odd shapes. My discovery and fascination with these erratic forms prompted me to express the juxtaposition of something visually captivating and “pretty” with something that is bizarre and eccentric.

The overall style of my packaging communicates sexiness, sensuality and boldness. Kama Rice, Tea, and Incense are high-end gourmet products infused with aphrodisiacs from the most obscure corners of India. These products have the ability to instill feelings of passion, happiness, and sexual desire.

Cardstock is a game that consists of a deck of 52 cards. This game contains all of the same rules that a typical deck of cards holds, however in this game four different paper colors substitute the four different suits, and two different paper types (smooth or textured) substitute the colors black and red in a traditional card deck. The purpose of the game is to promote the knowledge of different types of paper.
