THE OFFICIAL NEWSPAPER OF QUEEN MARY STUDENTS’ UNION

ISoc vows to keep the faith Zoe Cantley News Editor

On the 17th of last month a statement was released on Islamic Society’s (ISOC) Facebook page expressing unhappiness with the current facilities available to carry out prayer and plans to protest. The purpose of the protest was outlined in this statement as ‘in order to bring to the university’s attention the fact that this predicament can no longer continue and that they must respond with utmost urgency, to provide: a suitable venue that can accommodate 500+ students that attend the service; catering for both male and female student/ staff and that this venue be made permanently available once a week, every Friday afternoon, at the agreed time-slot.’ Currently, there is a MultiFaith room in the Student’s Hub that caters to all religious groups, offering anyone who wishes a place to worship. QMessenger has spoken to students, asking their opinions on this room and many believe it to be a ‘cop-out’ and inadequate. Arguably, this is an issue of space and a lack of facilities. In more general terms, the University’s official stance on space is that there is none, with no free rooms available. The issue of space is becoming an increasing problem, affecting students across the board, religious or otherwise. We are one of the most multicultural universities around, situated in the vibrant, diverse East End, with a particularly strong Muslim presence. As a result of the large quantity of Muslims at Queen Mary, the small Multi-Faith room is not big enough for all Muslims in attendance at the University to pray together, and this is especially a problem during Friday prayers.
