My first day as a teacher cadet, in the actual classroom, was full of a lot of different emotions. Nervousness of course was first, and then worry came along after I met all of the students that I would spent the next 20 days teaching and mentoring through their 3rd grade year. When I first walked into the room the first thing I noticed was how the classroom was set up. No wall was left uncovered and every chair or table also had some sort of decoration to it. I even felt like I was back in first block with Miss Love because of all the random Elvis trinkets that scattered the room. The students all sat in rows of four or five in the middle of the room. This morning whenever they came in most of them gave me a friendly smile and said hello. They then proceeded to start on their morning work. This was a mixture of math and language arts problems that they did every morning to help start their day. After they finished with this they took lunch count, which was a count to see who wanted what for lunch. Miss Robbins told me that they would then send this to the cafeteria and this helped the lunch people know what to make and what not to make for the day. Right in the middle of my field time the students go to activity time. Today their activity was music. The music teacher, Ms. Mitchell, asked me if I would like to stay with the students today and see what goes on in her class. I gladly accepted. This was a lot of fun for me because I got to see how the children reacted with a different teacher and with me being there to watch. The best part was the music teacher asked me to help her out with directing on the songs that children were learning. I really enjoyed getting to work with the students in a more laid back environment to start off with. Once I got back to the class with the students they transitioned into language arts. Today they learned about phonics sounds and today it was the “hard letter r. They all seemed to understand the concept pretty well and used a story which the picked out this sound in words from. My favorite thing out of

the whole day was getting to learn what a small school Hickory Grove Sharon is. All of the teachers knew each other really well and popped into class numerous times just to ask a question or say hello. Any student that would come in to deliver a paper or something, Miss Robbins would know their name immediately. The best part was when one of the assistant principles walked into the classroom and could talk to each student and know their names. I really felt like the school is kind of like one big family. I really enjoyed that and hope that I can teach at a school like that one day.
