Thatcham Historical Society

Thatcham Historical Society Thatcham Historical Society was formed in 1967 as part of the Parent Teacher Association of Kennet School with the aim of promoting an interest, not only in the local history of Thatcham and district, but also in historical matters in general. One way we achieve our aim is by arranging a regular series of talks by invited speakers throughout the year. We try to ensure that we have a wide range of subject matter in the talks by interpreting ‘historical’ relevance very freely. Past talks have covered reports of visits to the ancient civilisations of the Middle East and South America, aspects of industrial, transport and agricultural history, as well as aspects of the local history of Thatcham and District. The latter, where possible, are given by speakers who are involved in local research. Most talks are illustrated by slides and some have given members a chance to identify (or guess at!) the purpose of certain historical artefacts from local collections, which have included objects from Below Stairs of Hungerford. We also organise various trips each year to places of historical interest ranging from a day trip to a longer residential trip. Previous trips have included destinations such as Gloucester, Portsmouth, Rochester and Hadrian’s Wall.

Projects Another way in which we follow our aim is by initiating and encouraging research into the history of Thatcham and its surroundings. Currently we have a group working on the production of an inscription on Thatcham gravestones and Oral Histories to name a few. Other groups have created publications including ‘Thatcham over 2000 Years’ and ‘Journal of Thatcham Historical Society’. Becoming a Member The subscription fee is currently £7 per year. This allows you to attend all of the series of talks we arrange each year and includes refreshments at the meetings. It also includes the refreshments at our AGM and social evening. The cost of any excursions or visits would be extra. Visitors can also come along to any of our meetings at a cost of £1.50 per person per meeting. This also includes refreshments. If you are interested please come along to one of our meetings, you will be very welcome. You can join at any meeting, or just pay as a visitor. Where we meet Room e8/9, Rear Block, Kennet School, Thatcham. When we meet Usually 9 meetings a year at 7.30 pm on the last Monday of the month, excluding school holidays. Further information

was recently started by Andrew Hyde who is based in Mortimer. Having been given a hearing aid when he was a teenager, Andrew knows all about the various problems and inhibitions many of us have when it comes to loss of hearing. He well remembers how he would consign that ‘big’, cumbersome, behind the ear NHS aid that protruded from behind the ear - to a drawer not to be taken out unless really essential!

DESCRIBE YOUR BUSINESS: Our focus is to provide top quality hearing aids, personally selected for each individual. We understand the many pros and indeed possible cons which are relevant to each hearing aid. It is a pleasure to help each and every individual to the very best of our ability even if it takes several lengthy visits or appointments. We know that in the end it is vital to work through the possible complexities and get it right! We are proud of our reputation and genuinely want to help those with hearing loss regain their confidence in their ears. WHAT DO YOU OFFER? We offer a comprehensive service. This includes not only the selection of the aid but most importantly regularly check ups ensuring that you are still receiving full benefit. We understand that you must feel totally confident that we are bone fide. We are police checked and always carry ID.

Who are your customers? Our customers include all sections of the public from youngsters through to middle-agers and then to Senior Citizens. The aids of today encompass the latest in technology and have

progressed a long way in the last 20 years. They are very discreet and comfortable and you will hardly notice you’re wearing

WHAT IS THE KEY TO YOUR SUCCESS? I believe the key to our success lies in our motto: ‘Catch it Early’.

CAN YOU ELABORATE ON THIS? It is of paramount importance to check out any suspicion of hearing loss from as early on as possible and from a simple test we will have a bench mark which will guide us in the future. It may well be that you are not at the stage necessary to wear an aid and it gives me as much, or more satisfaction, telling someone this! On the other hand, if you do need some help from an aid, you will undoubtedly benefit by addressing the problem in an early stage, as your brain adjusts more efficiently, giving you maximum benefit.

ANDREW, WHICH PART OF THE JOB DO YOU LIKE BEST? “I like helping and serving .. and going the extra mile for people - it gives me a great satisfaction. With these aids you don’t need to go it alone! We are here to help you”.

CONGRATULATIONS to Rose and Gerry, who have over eighteen years of experience of running a most successful swimming school and who run classes at both Downe House and Brockhurst Schools locally - and other schools in the Bracknell area.

It is perhaps not a surprise - but is definitely a fine credit to them both - that they currently have several teachers working for them who they themselves taught to swim some thirteen years ago! Each child works to attain his or her best standard and with Gerry, Rose and Team each child is rewarded with a badge and a certificate. They are a family orientated swimming school and with their friendly approach to all the children, they achieve a great deal of confidence and a high level of swimming. “We are a professional, organised swimming school - with a very personal approach, which we believe is the key to our success.”

Caring Host Families Wanted

Being a host family for OISE Newbury Hall is a wonderful way to meet people from other countries and cultures. Our long-stay students come from a variety of countries, including those in Europe, and often even further afield. OISE Newbury Hall provides intensive courses which both prepare and support students throughout their GCSE and ‘A’ Level studies. A stable, comfortable and happy home plays a very important part in helping our students attain their goals, and for both students and our families, this stay is an enriching and warm memory which in many cases will remain with them for the whole of their lives. OISE Newbury Hall is a highly professional teaching organisation, and we have a full-time team of support workers to deal with student welfare, and any hosting difficulties that may arise. Locals Who Launch - Sarah Bennett

“I found it really hard to make sensible (but fun) choices when buying

baby products for my own youngsters. I was disappointed with the products on offer on the high street and wanted to be able to find things for my baby and toddler that were not always the same run-of-the-mill items. I decided then that there was an opening for mums of babies and toddlers to benefit from my research to buy sensibly priced, high quality essentials. Bambambaby was born from this idea.” Based in Newbury, bambambaby offers you a great new way to buy for your baby and toddler, They pride themselves on bringing you the most innovative, stylish, quality products around - and all at great prices! The product range includes items suitable for mums to be - through to babies and toddlers. Bambambaby can also help you host a party in your own home - where you and your friends can try the latest collection. Parties can be geared to suit every stage of a baby’s development, from newborns to weaning and potty training. Perhaps it might be a perfect opportunity to fundraise for your pre-school, toddler group or favourite charity? Also, as a thank you will receive a discount on your own bambambaby purchases. In addition, during June if you host a party you could be entitled to a FREE massage, manicure or pedicure at a top beauty salon! Please ring to find out more details.

Once you have filled these throughout the grid you can start guessing words and reveal other letters. It may help to cross off the letters beneath the grid to keep a track of which letters you have used. Please send in the completed puzzle by 14 July. Advertiser’s Profile

Oaktree Floors is a small family business, run by Dave Bamford and supported by his wife, Jo. They are based in Hungerford but cover a wide area including Newbury and Thatcham. Dave recognises the importance of the personal touch. Your house is your castle and your flooring compliments your castle! Wooden flooring gives the house a special warmth and atmosphere. And of course, your furniture is also transformed. From the very first phone call enquiry to the finish of the job, you have Dave’s assurance that you will receive only his professional (and of course) personal attention. Dave brings old floors back to life - or will fit a new hardwood floor - in this case he can advise you on the best wood to buy at the best price! In both cases he will have much pleasure in helping you achieve traditional perfection. See page 47 for more details.

Our Counsellor, Bruce Bamber

The Last Chance Saloon This is my third and final reflection on being a man. I’ll start with a fact: In 2005 in England and Wales a total of 3,223 men committed suicide. This is more than the total number of people who died in road accidents and three times the number of female suicides. What could this mean?

Over recent

decades the conventional wisdom has been that men have had most of the power, the privilege, the opportunities, the money and the freedom. There is no doubt that in general this has been the case and the women’s movement has been important in tackling women’s oppression. Historically, oppression has led to people joining together, uniting against a common enemy and finding strength in a shared purpose. Suicide, on the other hand, has nothing whatsoever to do with mutual support. It is the extreme result of isolation. This is what the statistics point to: Men are suffering from isolation; incapacitating, paralysing and sometimes terminal isolation. On the one hand there is an image of how men are (supposed to be); working together, playing together, bonding and achieving together. But there is another dark and hidden reality; that of men’s solitude. This is rarely spoken about and is often experienced as failure and weakness on the man’s part, thus plunging him into yet deeper despair. The oppression for men is often on the inside and can lead to withdrawal rather than strengthened connections with others. Isolation is a prison and perhaps the main problem with being in prison is that nobody else sees you behind the high walls and barbed wire. Many men, according to the statistics choose to escape through suicide. Many others simply settle for an impoverished and painful existence. This is not how it has to be. Bruce Bamber can be contacted on 07769 783424. ursula@thatchamconnections.co.uk 0118 9886070Please www.thatchamconnections.co.uk see page 41

Douai Park Tennis There can be few tennis clubs in Berkshire which have as many courts as those at Douai Park Tennis Club – or as lovely a setting in the heart of the Berkshire countryside opposite Douai Abbey in Upper Woolhampton.

Margaret Gilmore, Chairman, writes: This year we’ve improved the quality of the six courts considerably and we’ve more than doubled in size but there’s still plenty of room for more members – wherever you live, however good or bad you are at playing tennis, and whether you want to play seriously or for fun. Members are given a code for the combination lock and can turn up and use the courts almost anytime. Why not come and try us out at one of our DROP IN SESSIONS? Anyone can turn up for these – you don’t need to bring a tennis partner as we’ll try and find some one of the same ability for you to play with. We hold them every Tuesday at 9am, Wednesdays at 6.30pm and Saturdays from 8.30am. (These are free to members and £2 for non-members.) We also run holiday tennis coaching clubs for children and regular Fun Days which are either very cheap or free. The club is run by a growing committee of enthusiastic volunteers. Family Membership is £75, single adults £35 and children £20. There is a one off joining fee of £25. We are affiliated to the Lawn Tennis Association and our coaches are licenced and

CRB checked to work with children. Members of the club can enter our annual ballot to buy tickets for Wimbledon – this year we were allocated tickets for Centre Court and Court Number One. Because of the large number of courts at Douai we do at times allow other clubs to use them for tournaments – Cold Ash Tennis Club is our most regular user to date. For more information go to o u r w e b s i t e o n www.douaitennis.org or email membership@douaitennis.org or phone 07710 000499. Wimbledon is nearly here! For many of us this is a highlight of the summer

LOCAL RESIDENTIAL CLEANING SERVICES

Hate Housework?

We Love It!

Local Resident, Phil Ryder, has recently taken on a myhome franchise covering the Thatcham area. Phil recognises that ’time’ is precious and that everyone needs to spend valuable time at home - sometimes, without having to do the cleaning! Phil, heads up a team of highly-trained, fully insured, cleaning professionals who have undergone a strict vetting process, including police checks.

myhome’s cleaning service is tailored to meet the individual needs of each client, so before Phil can prepare a personalised quotation, he will visit the client at their property to assess their requirements and discus any special requests. Phil explains ‘Most customers opt for a fortnightly clean as the service is so thorough. But our service is flexible and our one-off cleaning services are also great for people in a variety of situations - moving into a new home, vacating rental accommodation and undergoing the dreaded inventory check - or in emergency situations such as after parties, are due, or after the builders have been in’.

Gardner Leader

The Value of Conveyancing Searches Charlotte Anns, Conveyancing Solicitor at Gardner Leader in Thatcham, takes a closer look at the types of searches undertaken in the conveyancing process when acting for a purchaser of a property. My role when acting for a purchaser is to find out as much information as possible about the property they are buying and the surrounding area, to ensure that they are satisfied that there are no issues that will affect their decision to buy. One way to ascertain this information is through carrying out a number of searches before contracts are exchanged. From 14 December 2007, all properties marketed in England and Wales require a Home Information Pack (HIP) which, in addition to an Energy Performance Certificate (EPC), Sale Statement and evidence of title, contains both a Local Authority and a Water and Drainage Search. In addition to these searches, I recommend to purchasers that for their own protection an Environmental and a Chancel search be carried out in relation to the property that they are purchasing. The Environmental Search examines whether the property is situated on or near land that may be contaminated by, for example, past industrial processes or waste disposal. The purpose of this search is to identify from available data whether there are current or potential contamination risks because a purchaser could be responsible for costs in relation to cleaning up the site in the future. The search also identifies other environmental issues that may spoil the use or enjoyment of the property, such as whether the property lies on a flood plain. Chancel Repair Liability is an ancient interest that allows the Parochial Church Council to require owners of former ecclesiastical land to meet the cost of repairing the church

chancel. Such land is not necessarily situated in close proximity to a church building. The Chancel Repair Liability Search confirms if the property is situated in a historic parish which continues to show a potential liability. If a potential risk is identified, a Chancel Repair Indemnity Policy can be purchased. This policy would mean that should a purchaser become liable to pay the costs of repairing the parish church chancel, then the costs would be covered by the policy. In July 2007, Thatcham was hit by unprecedented flooding which affected a significant amount of properties in the area. Flood searches are therefore becoming increasingly relevant for those people buying properties in the area. The information contained in the search is based on Environment Agency data and provides analysis as to whether a property is in or within 250m of an area affected by flooding, whether the property is close to flood defences or within a specified flood zone. The detail provided of flooding potential therefore provides valuable information to purchasers. Charlotte Anns is based in Gardner Leader’s Thatcham office and handles all aspects of Conveyancing (sales and purchases) including remortgages, transfer of equity and probate sales. She will be more than happy to explain the details of any searches that may be required for a potential property purchase. Book Review

Non Fiction

Journalist Hadley Freeman is deputy fashion editor of the Guardian and a contributing editor to Vogue. In The Meaning of Sunglasses: A Guide to (Almost) All Things Fashionable she gives the reader the benefit of her experience from a life on the fringes of the fashion industry. This encyclopaedic book covers everything that has been fashionable in the last few decades, from Accessories to Yoga. Her light hearted and critical tone makes her first foray into publishing informative and entertaining. Given her journalistic background it is not surprising that the result reads like a series of witty magazine editorials. Perfect for dipping in and out of; for a bit of light relief or as a guide to sprucing up your wardrobe. Her strong opinions on subjects such as unwearable fashions and unsympathetic style Hadley Freeman icons (see ‘Moss, Kate, and how she ruined your wardrobe’) are refreshingly normal for an insider. To Water or Not to Water…?

W

ater is a precious commodity but without it, our gardens would be in a sorry state. If you have a water meter or a hosepipe ban, here are a few tips on the best ways to irrigate your garden while protecting the water reserves. All plants need water, but fruit, vegetables, containers and new plants have the greatest need. Watering your garden must be done correctly to prevent wastage and to keep your plants alive. Established plants shouldn’t need watering, especially if they are native to your area. Newly planted areas, however, do need to be kept damp, but this can be avoided if you plant only in early spring or autumn, giving the new plants time to build a strong root system before summer arrives. Fruit and vegetables will usually produce a crop of sorts without extra watering but obviously the yield will be bigger and

healthier if you do drench them regularly. However, if it's the leaves that are to be harvested, the plant shouldn’t be allowed to dry out. If there’s a drought, you should be able to get away with just one good soaking two weeks before harvest time. The knack of conserving water while keeping your garden healthy is a combination of factors that can be summarised in two parts: reduce water loss from your garden and make the most of the water you have. Keep weeding! Weeds take precious moisture away from your plants, and this includes your lawn. And while on the subject of lawns, it’s recommended that you do not water your lawn at all as they require a huge, regular soaking to be effective. Grass will turn brown in particularly dry times, but will soon recover once rain comes. Efficient and effective watering is most

important for plant growth during the summer. Early morning or evening is best as there is less evaporation. If you have to use a hose, choose a good quality rubber one with a trigger and rose attachment. The trigger will allow you to control the water flow while the rose will provide the small droplets necessary to penetrate the earth more effectively without breaking up the surface crust which helps retain moisture. Endeavour to apply water just to the base of the stem of specific plants, leaving the rest of the soil dry. This will limit weed growth and ensures the water reaches precisely where it’s most needed. Never just sprinkle everything with water as this will encourage roots to grow near the surface where they will be prone to severe damage if drought hits. It’s better to water less regularly and more thoroughly, giving each plant a proper soaking so the water reaches right down to the roots. ‘Ponding’ or ‘puddling’ is an effective way of keeping the water in the area for which it’s intended. This just means building a little earth wall around the base of the plant which works as a dam, preventing the water running across the surface of the soil. Collecting and recycling water is very important now. Water butts are easier to access if you mount them on a platform of bricks so you can fit a bucket or watering can under the tap. You can buy kits to link several butts together so rain is diverted when one container is full. Another trick is to recycle ‘grey-water’, which is water that has been used for washing. Soap and detergent is harmless to plants but don’t use it if bleach or disinfectant has been added. If you have an aquarium, use the water from this as it also contains a cheap, natural fertiliser. Collecting grey-water is easy if you set up a special system and preferable to carrying buckets up and down stairs all the time. See www.reuk.co.uk/Greywater-DiverterValve.htm for further information. For a more advanced scheme, if you have the space and the money, you might consider building a special rain-tank in your garden. Take a look at the Rainwater Harvesting website for further details www.ukrha.org.
