Into the Mystique: The Architecture of the Spectacle Cirque du Soleil Training Center New Orleans, Louisiana Fall 2013 Cirque du Soleil seeks to create a new image for a hypothetical new training center in New Orleans. Three training gyms are suspended from the megastructure to mimic the disbelief and mystique of a Cirque du Soleil performance. The organization is derived from a sense of passage, threshold, and enclosure that progressively reveals the secrets of the Cirque du Soleil spectacle to public visitors. Visitors are drawn in by the suspended volumes and the translucent nature of the lighted training studios. They then enter from the public ampitheater and progress into the depths of the building workshops to observe how Cirque shows are put together. From there, visitors ascend to the public plaza where they are immersed in the spectacle and receive glimpses into the training areas. Visitors then pass the training pool and ascend to the viewing platform. From the top of the building the spectacle is inverted, with the view to the city being the ultimate spectacle. The large megastructure relates to the Crescent City Connection bridge beyond as well as the tall ships that pass the site on the Mississippi River.

French Quarter Public Library

The library’s role in society is changing as technology and media are replacing the need to consult physical books for information. What makes a library relevant today is its ability to transcend its role as a storehouse for books and to incorporate social functions. The book, thus, serves primarily to acknowledge the importance of the past. The books are contained within loadbearing, cast-in-place concrete walls “floating� above the main spaces on the ground level. These fragmented concrete volumes divide the book areas into separate collections and bridge across the spaces below becoming monumentalized objects, like the books themselves. The ground floor has an open plan and the public spaces flow into one another. These spaces of interaction fill the voids between the solid masses, allowing some of the rooms to become multi-height volumes. In effect, the library becomes a lively environment for social exchange and information transfer, but also acknowledges the book and monumentalizes it as an artifact to be admired and remembered in a digital age.

The Culinary Institute specializes in teaching Creole cooking to locals residents and aims to become a community resource in an effort to revitalize an area of New Orleans that has suffered from significant blight. The project strives to bring community and students together by attempting to allow for connections between community spaces and teaching spaces. A ribbon of greenspace winds through the project, connecting a series of courtyards. By allowing the greenspace to wind inside, outside, and around the project, a constant connection to the source of food that is being cooked or eaten is created. The process of food entering and leaving the building in a more traditional sense is illustrated by the louver system that shows where food enters and is distributed to the different kitchens.

BIM Sustainable Habitat Home Prototype New Orleans Spring 2012

AINABLE HOME: NEW ORLEANS

A sustainable habitat home prototype was designed for a typical New Orleans lot. Sustainable strategies include raising the building off ground level to protect the home from the potential of flooding in New Orleans, a roof that slopes to the south to shield the building from harsh southern sunlihgt, a water storage container underneath the home that allows water from the sloped roof to be collected and then used as part of the passive cooling strategy. The water collected is then pumped through a “water wall� feature that cools air on the north, and provides a relaxing atmosphere for occupats to enjoy the outdoor porch, typical of New Orleans shotgun houses. The cool air enters the home through large sliding glass doors that allow indoor space to connect with the porch and cool air can enter and leave the building through stack venhilation. A screen wall with vines allows occupants to grow their own vegetables and provides a nice astetic from the outside. The project was created using Autodesk Revit modeling software and was a finalist within a studio-wide competition. Group Members: Jamie Ball, Ali Carroll, Sarah Cumming

Magellan Street Community Garden New Orleans Spring 2013

The vision for the Magellan Street Garden was not only to expand the capacity for growing crops, but also to provide an environment that would be conducive to teaching local youth about the importance of gardening and healthy eating. The design stemmed from an investigation of drainage, where water is collected from the roof above the outdoor classroom, is channeled to a series of constructed wetlands, and then is directed to irrigate a series of raised planter beds. A team of students designed and constructed the project over the course of a semester taking part in all aspects of the design and construction process.

Mission Guatemala Lemoa, Guatemala January 2011 At trip to Guatemala with the Tulane University Wesley Foundation focused on the construction of a community-centered church and classroom complex in rural Guatemala. Construction tasks involved the moving of dirt to level floors, the application of stucco to the exterior of the church, and the painting of the church exterior. The typical construction method was stacked CMU blocks.

Disjunctive Urbanisms Colon, Panama Spring 2014 Borders define landscapes and nations and as such help define both the individual and collective identities of the people who occupy a particular set of boundaries. The nation of Panama offers a complex set of border relationships and a range of movement across physical and symbolic boundaries, which ultimately shape and influence Panamanian national identity. From the international crossing of goods and people through shipping and transport along the Panama Canal, to the boundaries that exist between the former United States Canal Zone, civilian communities, military bases and the remaining Panamanian territory, to the divisions that separate wealthy enclaves from the remaining working-class communities in Colon and Panama City, Panama is a landscape historically and contemporaneously disjointed in both its image and identity. Colon, a port of entry on the Atlantic end of the Panama Canal, offers an opportunity to assess movement and interaction across national, political and socioeconomic borders. The Colon Free Zone, a large commercial hub and entry point, is in a constant state of influx and outflow as people and capital move into it from outside the nation of Panama. The Colon Free Zone, however, also borders an underserved community of locals. As a walled, segregated, and expanding center with controlled access, the contrasting spatial results inside and outside the walls of the Colon Free Zone can be linked to distinct social subjects and social identities. Colon also borders the historically American Canal Zone. This juxtaposition of nationality and the ultimate imperative of high-level security measures on military bases results in the disjuncture of physical space and the separation of “opposing� social subjects existing on either side of these barriers. While the United States military has left Panama and the Canal Zone was reverted back to the Panamanians in the 1990s, there exists high potential for re-integration between these distinct zones of political influence and, furthermore, a high potential for the reconstruction of national identity.

Acadia National Park Maine Spring 2011 This Yoga Retreat is located in the middle of a steep, south-facing slope in Acadia National Park in Maine.The facility is a retreat center for groups that are dropped off in the wilderness to meditate, reflect, and enjoy nature. The architecture of the building seeks to enhance the idea of slowing down and reflecting. By curving the path, the building not only more closely follows natural movement along a steep slope, but prevents occupants from travelling directly from point A to point B. Instead, they must slow their movement by taking a slightly more indirect path and guests are encouraged to enjoy the natural beauty that surrounds.
