By mid September 2014, Chesterfield Borough Council will have completed the first phase of the ongoing development of Chesterfield Theatres, funded by Arts Council England and Chesterfield Borough Council. The purpose of carrying out this work is to enable the theatres to deliver a wider range of events and generate additional income to support their ongoing development. The first stage of the development includes:

We would like to welcome you to Chesterfield Theatres – and the new autumn/winter programme. During the last few months, we have been doing work at both theatres to improve our facilities so that we can extend the range and quality of performances. At the Winding Wheel we have invested in a new stage and lighting, improved dressing rooms and improved theatre seating in the auditorium. Highlights of this season’s programme at the Winding Wheel include one of Britain’s leading orchestras the ROYAL PHILHARMONIC ORCHESTRA, the hit musical concert ROCK N ROLL HEAVEN, the new musical DREAMBOATS AND MINISKIRTS, and the celebrated FASCINATING AIDA. At the Pomegranate Theatre we are installing digital projection equipment for film and live broadcast events, additional seats, a new lighting control room, and we are refurbishing existing seats and carpets. Highlights of the new programme at the Pomegranate Theatre include John Godber’s delightful APRIL IN PARIS, the return of the Agatha Christie Company in BLACK COFFEE with Hercule Poirot, two superb ballets, SWAN LAKE, and THE NUTCRACKER, and from the million selling author, and writer of the most terrifying stage play ever presented, Susan Hill’s THE SMALL HAND. Also don’t miss our celebration of cinema to launch our new film programme at the end of September. Looking further ahead, make sure you book your tickets for this year’s pantomime CINDERELLA, which will star the queen of ballroom and Strictly Come Dancing winner CAMIILLA DALLERUP, and ASA ELLIOTT from ITV’s Benidorm.

Improved backstage and technical facilities at the Winding Wheel Improved seating layout in the Winding Wheel Auditorium Installation of digital projection equipment in the Pomegranate Theatre The Pomegranate Theatre is a delightful Victorian 589-seat proscenium arch theatre with adjoining bar, housed in the Grade II-listed Stephenson Memorial Hall. The theatre presents a programme of professional touring drama, music, entertainment, and a very popular pantomime. In addition it presents a regular programme of films and is also used by a number of local amateur groups.

The Winding Wheel is a Grade IIlisted entertainment and conference centre, built in 1923 as a cinema. It offers a diverse programme including West End musicals, comedy shows, concerts, illustrated talks and community events.

Improved technical facilities at the Pomegranate Theatre Theatre Restoration Levy As many customers are aware, in February 2014, Chesterfield Borough Council introduced a Theatre Restoration Levy of £1.50 per ticket on Council promoted professional events to fund ongoing improvements to the Theatres to make them fit for the future. We would like to thank you for your cooperation and support, as to date this has raised approximately £17,000. This money will go towards future improvements of both Theatres, including the foyers, bars, lifts, toilets and seating.

The venue has three rooms - the main Auditorium which seats up to 930 people, the adjoining Ballroom which can hold up to 200, and the Function Room which can hold up to 100.

Get Involved with the Theatres Arts, Education & Community The shows you see on stage are only part of what goes on here at Chesterfield Theatres. We aim to support our exciting programme with back-stage tours, post-show discussions and workshops. Here are a number of ways in which you or someone you may know can get involved.

Education We support visiting companies, performers, theatre and film events with tailor made In-School and Theatre Workshops for all ages (where available), Technical Workshops, Teacher Resource Packs (where available), Pre and Post Show Discussions, Back Stage Tours and Work Experience Placements. Pomegranate Youth Rally for Arts & Theatre (PYRAT)

Sewing Group The Sewing Group meets most Thursday mornings in the Pomegranate Theatre Bar. Originally set up to create costumes for Youth Theatre productions, members get involved in many arts projects using knitting and sewing. An all inclusive group with a shared interest in writing, this group aims to encourage and facilitate the development of new writing for performance and to provide opportunities for work to be presented. There are usually two performances each year in the Theatre Bar.

Chesterfield Theatre Friends Chesterfield Theatre Friends was formed in November 2007 to help ‘preserve, promote and protect the future of Chesterfield Theatres' with the immediate goal of raising funds to support the 2009 celebrations of 60 years of civic theatre in Chesterfield. Since then, they have also become involved in the creation of a dedicated archive store for the Theatre. A combination of peoples’ memories and digital recording of physical materials which has come together to create a community archive which will be published online in September 2014. Stage Presence To celebrate the completion of the refurbishment work at the Pomegranate Theatre, and to mark the launch of the archive, Chesterfield Borough Council present Stage Presence at the Chesterfield Museum and Art Gallery from Sat 13 Sep - Sat 22 Nov 2014. Stage Presence is an exhibition exploring the past of Chesterfield's theatre. Entry is free and the exhibition can be visited during museum opening hours which are 10am-4pm Mon, Thu, Fri and Sat.

Paul Holman Associates are holding auditions for 2 teams of 8 junior girl dancers aged 8-12, maximum height 4’ 10” to appear in this year’s Pantomime, Cinderella, which stars Strictly Come Dancing’s Camilla Dallerup and Benidorm’s Asa Elliott. Hercule Poirot returns to the stage in Agatha Christie’s Black Coffee, now starring Jason Durr from ITV’s hit series Heartbeat in the role of the famous Belgian sleuth. Since Heartbeat Jason has appeared on television in Lewis, Midsomer Murders, and Miss Marple. Last seen on stage in the West End production of Noel Coward’s Volcano, Jason has also starred in Sherlock Holmes, Macbeth, and Losing Louis. Jason will be joined by Agatha Christie Company regulars Gary Mavers who is best known for playing heart-throb doctor Andrew Attwood in Peak Practice and Ben Nealon, perhaps best loved for his role as Capt Forsythe in the ITV drama Soldier Soldier. Also included in this year’s cast are Deborah Grant, who has starred in numerous television shows including Not Going Out, Peak Practice and Bergerac, Oliver Mellor, who for 4 years has played Dr. Matt Carter in Coronation Street, and Georgina Leonidas whose credits include playing the cursed Katie Bell in the last two Harry Potter movies.

A quintessential English country estate is thrown into chaos following the murder of eccentric inventor Sir Claud Amory, and the theft of his new earth shattering formula. Arriving at the Estate moments too late, one man immediately senses a potent brew of despair, treachery, and deception amid the estate's occupants. That man is Hercule Poirot. In the first play ever written by Agatha Christie we are introduced to a character who went on to become the most famous detective of all time and the only fictional character ever to receive a full-page obituary in the New York Times.

Andrew Raftery is a retired Consultant General and Kidney Transplant Surgeon who worked at the Sheffield Kidney Institute. In 1983 he became Director of Transplantation in Sheffield. Since retirement he has taken up acting and has appeared in six plays at Sheffield’s Crucible theatre, including An Enemy of the People with Sir Anthony Sher, and Lives in Art, a play written for the 40th anniversary of the Crucible opening.

Comic Opera. At the age of 21, Frederic has finally served the full length of his apprenticeship with the pirates. Shortly after leaving, he meets Mabel, the daughter of Major-General Stanley, and the two young people fall in love. Frederic finds out, however, that he was born on 29 February, and so, technically, he only has a birthday each leap year. The pirates claim he must return and serve his apprenticeship for another 63 years. Will Mabel wait for him? Amateur production.

The Story of Sheffield’s Castles

Most people are only vaguely aware that Sheffield had two castles. This fully illustrated talk throws new light on Sheffield's castles, looking at the evidence we have of what they looked like, their lords and how the castles came to be built and destroyed. The talk includes the story of the excavations that have taken place and the artefacts that have been discovered. It concludes with the proposals for the redevelopment of the castle site following the demolition of the Castle Market.

One Night of Queen is a spectacular live concert, recreating the look, sound, pomp and showmanship of arguably the greatest rock band of all time. This show will “rock” you!

Mike Storr presents a humorous talk which takes an affectionate look at some of his favourite music hall laughter makers. He will cover how music hall began and he will also speak about some of his favourite characters, how they started in show business and then samples of their acts. Characters he will introduce include Robb Wilton, Stanley Holloway and Bernard Miles to name but a few.

Probably the most entertaining group to come out of the 60s and 70s. Their musicianship, their harmonies and of course their humour makes them what their peers call them “The Guvnors”. They are supremely talented, a showbiz phenomenon, and the best tonic the NHS could give the population. They are the only group to have toured with the Beatles and twice with the Rolling Stones.
