Message from the Vice Chancellor for Development Over the past year, you have likely seen UALR alumni featured in our marketing campaign UALR Grads at Work. They have all earned degrees, are succeeding in their chosen fields, and are active citizens in our community. But it was only a few years ago that they were in the classroom and, not unlike many of our students today, working as they struggled to make ends meet financially. More than 80 percent of our student body requires some form of financial aid, and unfortunately much of that aid is in the form of student loans. Private philanthropy, usually in the form of scholarships, relieves the financial burden students experience while earning their degrees. Our students work hard to add value to their lives through their education, and we appreciate the generous financial support our donors provide by establishing endowments that continue to help our students today, tomorrow, and for generations to come. Today’s students are tomorrow’s Grads at Work campaign stars, and this 2011-2012 Endowment Report introduces you to eight. I hope you enjoy Linda, Ashley, Amanda, Ron, Lizzy, Lucia, Tamra, and Keith’s stories. Bob G. Denman Vice Chancellor for Development Office of Development

Ashley’s Opportunity

Amanda’s Opportunity

Miller Exum, the nspired by the help she he late state senator Lfirstinda I mother of two, sits for her was able to provide to the T and party chair Bill actuary exam this fall as family of a profoundly sick Gwatney loved politics. So she completes requirements for a Bachelor of Science degree in mathematics with a minor in statistics thanks to the Damerow Endowed Mathematics and Statistics Award for 2012.

“Furthering my education has offered me great personal satisfaction, but most importantly, it has shown my two young daughters how important education is, and with hard work and dedication you can grow, learn, and be assured of a better tomorrow,” she said. Exum, who lives in Hot Springs, took an independent study course this summer in nonparametric statistical methods to fulfill requirements for the minor. She is particularly interested in actuary science, a field she said is dynamic and challenging. “Traditionally thought of as an insurance professional, the skills and talents of an actuary are also used in financial, transportation, energy, and environmental agencies, so prospects of employment are very favorable,” she said.

does Ashley Baker, a Navy veteran who chose to use her G.I. Bill benefits to enroll at UALR because of its strong working relationship with veterans and its dynamic Department of Political Science. Her quest to graduate and train as a Navy officer has been helped by her selection to receive the Bill Gwatney Memorial Endowed Scholarship. “This scholarship will provide the essentials needed to stay in school such as daycare, gas, food, and books,” she said. With a degree in political science, she will be able to enroll in the Navy Officer Candidate School and possibly qualify to become a Navy pilot. “After my naval career, I plan on returning to politics and running for office,” she said. “I love this country and truly believe that one person can make a difference.” So did Bill Gwatney.

child, Amanda Cox began her quest to become a nurse by enrolling in UALR’s Department of Nursing. “Throughout my college experience, I have been able to work a full-time job and thought that I would be able to continue working through the nursing program,” she said. “When I entered my second semester, I found this not to be possible for me. I had no choice but to stop working full time. This left me relying completely on loans.” Then she received a Rockefeller Scholarship just before starting her second year in the nursing program. “When I received the letter that I was awarded this scholarship, I felt a huge load lifted off my shoulders,” she said in a letter of gratitude to Lisenne Rockefeller, who represents the Winthrop Rockefeller Foundation. “If it were not for you and your compassion for giving students the means and support to complete their degree, I do not know how I would be able to make it through my last year.” Cox’s goal is to become an intensive care nurse who can help care for families and “children whose lives have been interrupted and turned upside down by a disability.”

Ron’s Opportunity rowing up in a crimeG ridden pocket of southwest Little Rock, Ron

Wilkerson saw education as something unachievable. After a rough journey through the public schools, he finally dropped out with a dismal grade point average of .08. After eight years of marriage to a loving and supportive wife who is a human relations professional, Wilkerson was motivated to try again in 2006, going to night classes for construction management at UALR while working 40 hours a week and helping to raise their 1-year old son. This year, he was honored to receive the Kirk Davis-AGC Scholarship. “It is the help and benefits which you provide that allow hard-working students such as me the opportunity to succeed in increasingly difficult economic times,” he wrote to the donors of the scholarship. Wilkerson has maintained his status as an honor student since he has been at UALR. Only twice in his college career has he failed to achieve a perfect 4.0 GPA. Already an employee in the facility and construction department at a regional bank, Wilkerson said his degree will give him a leg up in his career when he graduates in 2013.

Lizzy’s Opportunity “Lizzy” Eberle ELittlelizabeth loves to learn. Raised in Rock, she completed

high school at a boarding school in Chattanooga, Tenn., which sparked an interest in experiencing new and different places. “I have attended other universities and community colleges, but never felt it was the right time to pursue a degree,” she said. As a result, her eclectic job history includes stints as a retail clerk, apartment manager, and theater performer. Two years ago, she tried again to find a calling. She found it at UALR’s Department of Geology, where she now is a junior pursuing a geology degree with a minor in environmental geology. She was selected for the Fay S. Pfeifer Scholarship. “Your gracious gift gives me hope that my dreams of a career in geology will happen and include opportunities for travel and further education,” she told scholarship trustees. The scholarship allowed her to attend a field camp in Colorado, near Silverton and Durango, where she studied rock exposures and other geological elements. She serves as vice president of the UALR Geology Club, organizing events.

Lucia’s Opportunity

B

orn and raised in Nigeria, Lucia Okaro was pushed by her parents to go above and beyond the bar set by her three older siblings. “This scholarship will allow me to continue on that path and indeed lessen the financial burden on my parents,” she said in a letter to Jerry Adams thanking him for her receipt of UALR’s Paul Williams Memorial Scholarship. The junior international student majoring in management information systems said the scholarship will help her meet her graduation date in 2014. She is a member of the Golden Key Honor Society and an executive member of the University Program Council. She also works part time in the university’s Office of Development. “With my intended major, I hope to further expand my knowledge by pursuing a double master’s degree in business administration and marketing and later go on to become a software developer,” Okaro said. “I want to express my sincerest gratitude for giving me the opportunity to achieve my academic goals.”

Tamra’s Opportunity

Keith’s Opportunity

s a teacher at Little amra Creed of Benton A Rock Central High Tbecoming always dreamed of School, Keith Richardson a writer. Thanks to a scholarship from the William G. Cooper Jr. Honors Program in English, Creed is on her way to pursuing a career in English and creative writing. “This scholarship not only helps me academically and financially, but it will also encourage me to continue to give 100 percent to my studies,” she said. This fall starts her second year as a Cooper Scholar. “Thanks to the generosity of people like you, I have been able to attend school without constantly thinking about the financial aspect of earning my degree,” she said. “I was able to go to Europe at the beginning of the summer with Dr. (Paul) Yoder, the program’s director, through the study abroad program.” She said her travel abroad, “was the best experience of my life.” “I am also thankful for all the things I have been able to do at UALR and for all the teachers who have taught me well,” she said. “I am honored to have this opportunity.”

goes beyond his duties teaching the facts and figures of civics and human geography. As a faculty sponsor of Central’s Gentleman’s Club, he mentors boys to become men. Richardson also mentors students involved in the Memory Project, where civics students are interviewing their elders about how civil rights have changed in their lifetimes. The project has led to a book, “Beyond Central, Toward Acceptance,” and a website that stores student essays created from the interviews. This year, Richardson was named Central’s Teacher of the Year, all while pursuing a graduate degree in education. He was aided this year with a Gene Campbell Scholarship from UALR. “I am very fortunate to have this honor bestowed upon me, and I will do the best I can with the opportunity you all have given me,” he told scholarship board members. “This will allow me to explore ways to better educate future students. Your investment will not be wasted.”
