Japanese manga is very popular in Asia and even in the U.S. today. There

are many genres of manga ranging from romance and drama in realistic settings to horror and action in a supernatural world. We read comics and manga to escape into an alternate reality whether it is that of the human world or another world. The manga focused in this anthology all have a common theme that brings a multi-dimensional factor into play: spirits.

What are spirits? In the manga we’ve chosen, spirits are supernatural

forces—like ghosts, demons, and souls—that intermingle between the human world and the realm of their origin. They can become allies or enemies of the human characters, and some are known or unknown to the human world. Spirits are more of the unknown because humans cannot see them and are unaware of their existence or presence. So, this idea of the supernatural unknown world captures the attention of the audience.

The manga we are presenting in this anthology include Bleach, Blue Exor-

cist, Death Note, Inuyasha, Neuro: Supernatural Detective, and Yu Yu Hakusho. All of the six manga have three themes in common: encountering spirits in the human world, seeing or entering through a gate/portal between the spirit world and human world, and a collision between humans and spirits. We feel that these three topics define our focus of this anthology and wholly represent the impact

of spirits in Japanese manga.
