OUR SCHOOL Elian’s Brittish School is located in the outskirts of Castellón. The ratio of our classes is 20 pupils of different cultures like Moroccans and Syrians. We are surrounded with nature and cultural monuments like the Mare de Déu de Lledó church, the Sant Roc chapel or the Magdalena castle. Our school is equipped with lots of facilities such as a swimming pool, a basketball, padel and tennis court, a football field and a fitness center. Inside the classrooms we have digital boards as well as regular boards, tablets for the children and access to computers. Moreover, for those who don’t live near our school, we offer transport services and hot lunch services in the school dining room. Finally, in case of any accidents we have a medical team available. Due to the fact that the students are leaving nursery school to get into primary school and because of the good relationships between the children and the teachers; we have decided to make a magazine so you and your children can remember the great moments they have spent here, at Elian’s British School. In this magazine, we also introduce some activities and recommendations, for the parents as well as for the children, to take in consideration during

the

summer.

FOR THE PARENTS

THE IMPORTANCE OF LEARNING ENGLISH AT SCHOOL English is the predominant language in the world. It is estimated that more than 500 million people speak it in a native way. This is the reason why it is important to teach English at school when the children are little. On the one hand, the smaller the child is when he begins to study, the easier it will be and more benefits it will bring. This is because when the kids are little, they learn the language in a natural way and so they do not have to make a voluntary effort to learn it, because they acquire it as they develop. It will also increase the chances of getting the job they want when they are adults. Being bilingual or having a good level of English is a skill that today’s society greatly appreciates. On the other hand, the child can have access to two different cultures. This enriches their education and enables them to look at the world with an open mind. In this way, the child can communicate with people of other nationalities, having access to a globalized world. It is also important to note that the more languages they know, the easier it is to learn a new language. Besides, young children are not usually shy about speaking in a different language.

To sum up, we are convinced that childhood is a good time to start talking and practicing English without fear of making mistakes, acquiring selfconfidence for the future. BY PAUL A GARCÍ A BALL ESTER

WAIT FOR YOUR CHILD The year is over, and the little students are now going to spend the whole day at home. That means that you, the parents or someone you trust, are going to become their “teachers”. There is something that you have to take very seriously: to respect their pase. This is a pillar of our school

because

we

take in consideration the needs of our pupils and

understanding

the rhythm that a child has is fundamental. This doesn't mean that you have to literally walk as slow or as fast as your child does, it means that you have to understand the limits, goals, needs and wants that he or she has and act with them in mind. For example, we don't teach 3 years olds how to do math equations because they're not ready for it. You have to keep in mind the level of development your child has and act accordingly. We’re sure you have your child’s best interest at heart, so we want to help you become the best “teacher” you can be this summer. When answering their questions, try using words and expressions they already know. When making questions yourself, wait until your child finishes expressing themself.

THE IMPORTANCE OF ARTS EDUCATION Nowadays, the importance of arts education is often underestimated by many people who have the belief that the school has to develop mathematics and linguistic skills. Traditional education is based on this concept: science, maths or literature play an essential role in our lifes. But, what about arts? Multiple investigations have shown that art education are important too, even necessary for the correct development of the students. In kindergarten for example, art is a language used by children to express how they feel through imagination. The arts give children the opportunity to explore and create, giving them a new vision Kids with artistic skills are more motivated than others and because of that, they can adapt to their reality easily. Also,

the artistic education helps children to improve their self-esteem, to share their

feelings

or

to

think

about

themselves. Moreover, it is important to emphasise the great advantage of education arts: through it we can leave stereotypes, obstacles and prejudices. So, when we talk about artistic education, we refer to subjects such as plastic arts, music or theatre. From our school, we try to offer a lot of interesting activities that improve artistic skills of our students. During this year, we have carried out a painting workshop based on the figure of Picasso, a small band with instruments of percussion, or a performance of “The Little Prince”. We hope that the children have improved their artistic skills and they continue to enjoy and learn with them, we will always try to provide them the tools to make it! BY MI REI A CAM AÑES RO YO

WHAT'S NEW IN EDUCATION As you know, in this school we use the new technologies with our students to help them learn. This has many benefits, even in young learners like your children. Firstly,

Secondly, the pupils that are more advanced on their knowledge have the chance to do simple research on their tablets or the class computer and learn more. In addition, the Internet is a very helpful tool that our teachers know and use daily to communicate with you, the parents. Using the school webpage and the class facebook page, the teachers share the activities they did at class with pictures of the children without showing their faces, of course. Moreover, the teachers share more personal information about your child with you through the WhatsApp group and personal conversations using that App. In conclusion, new technologies are very useful in education and are essential in today's world. Computers, tablets and mobile phones are a part of your children's life at home and it should be a part of their lives at school. BY CRI STI NA EQUI ZA S Ă NCHEZ

THE IMPORTANCE OF THE CREATIVITY Nowadays we are living in a changed world. The technology has progressed and it makes our life more easy. Such as adults we have to find news methods to develop the creativity of our children. On the one hand, we should give to our children the tools that they could use to make differents things. Consequently, we should show them some examples like

materials and objects that they could use to make their idea in the reality life. If they want build a cabin in their room, we would lend some cardboard box and blankets. Then, they could take some different objects to decorate the cabin. Also they would have developed their personality because they use the materials that they want On the other hand, we should give to our children the tools to use the news technology. To tell the truth, today’s children know how use a computer o a tablet and that is an advantage because we only have to give some advices to protect themselves about the dangers of the net. In conclusion, such as teachers and parents we have to train to improve the creativity and imagination of our children. For that, we will show them they

need.

ENVIRONMENT Every country in the world has problems with pollution and damage to the environment. But it is necessary to find a solution and take measures to improve that situation. In the task of care and preservation of the

environment the children are fundamental. For a few years to the current moment, the energetic development, the technological advance, the globalization, the advance in science or agriculture has been enormous. With it, also it has increased the mistreatment to the ecosystem, for what the persons we are necessary to take care of everything what we have been destroying and ill-treating little by little. In this respect, the children and girls represent the future, for what it is necessary to teach them to develop sustainable practices to be generous with the environment, to be able to preserve the world since we it know till then. They will be the persons in charge of putting into practice from ecological policies worldwide like to carrying out small gestures in favor of supporting the ecosystem. For these reasons our center prioritizes environmental education and this brought different organizations that gave talks and did some workshops with children. The teacher said to the children that they should bring different materials that they took as a house to reuse them the children brought boxes of carton, bottles of plastic, old socks, etc. First they created a few wastebaskets with the different colors (yellow, green, blue and orange for the organic residues) with the recyclable materials that they had brought, representing this way the containers of recycling. Once realized the teacher divided to the class in small groups to which it gave different residues that they had to place in the corresponding containers. Secondly we arouse the pupils of why we have to recycle and the consequences of not doing it, by means of a series of videos and images. Finally we did two models in which a city full of pollution was represented, whereas in another city cleans, there were in use materials recycled in both models.Children liked these activities a lot. HAVE A HEALTHY LIFE Nowadays many children have overweight because they use junk food like chips, processed baked, desserts, candies, sweets, etc. Sometimes some parents don’t have time to make food for their sons because they have to work and therefore they feed them with processed food or sandwiches.

On the one hand, it’s very important that both, schools and families, increase healthy food and teach the children to eat fruit and vegetables, because it provides them the energy and vitamins that their body needs. Besides, it is necessary to provide children hot lunch as legumes, soup, etc. even if they don’t

like

it,

because

it

helps

them

to

have

a

balanced

diet.

On the other hand, besides taking care of the feeding it is important that children do exercises. If they don’t like practice general sports like football, basketball, etc. they will do dance, handball, go to the swimming pool, do karate, etc. Apart from this, at weekends they can go with their families to hiking or cycle improving their health and the relationship with their parents. To sum up, it is necessary that children lead a healthy and active life to avoid future health problems and it should be taught since they are small so they can learn the importance of eating well. RECOMMENDATIONS FOR PARENTS It’s very important that families besides school help the children with their personal, social and emotional development. Therefore, these are some recommendations that parents can take into account this summer.

At that age, it is fundamental that children learn to control their own emotions, talk about their feelings and learn how to interact with others have empathy, because all of these things can help improve their self-esteem. On

one

side,

some

books that parents could read it if in the school hasn’t worked are: Emotionary, the color monster and the little prince. Emotionary is a guide where are represented all the emotions and can help the child to know them and develop their emotional intelligence.

The color monster is a book of a monster that has trouble to distinguish emotions. In the course of the book, the monster is learning to differentiate the basic emotions. Also, the book account with a records that parents can use with his kids. The little prince talks about one prince that leaves on his planet, and he decides to travel to other planets where he learns many different things.

One movie recommendation that parents can see with his kids is Inside Out. The film is about a girl who does things that the emotions (Joy, Sadness, Fear, Disgust and Anger) that are in her mind tell her. This film is very funny and

interesting for the children because it could help to recognize basic emotions. On the other side, it is necessary that children develop their creativity and imagination too, for this reason one of the best ways to do this is by playing. Children must play with other kids, but it isn’t always necessary that they play with other children, they can also play at home alone. Parents

can

THINGS TO REMEMBER

TRIP TO THE SCHOOL FARM The last 7th of October, our class traveled to a school farm near Castellรณn because the two teachers think that it is very important that children were in contact with nature. At 8 o'clock we went up to the bus, and we stay there half past hour until arriving to the school farm. In that half hour the children were singing a lot of songs. When we arrived at the school farm, the first thing that we could do was visited the different animals like cows, sheep, horses, pigs, donkeys, goats, chickens and chicks while the farmer explained things about them.

When we finished visiting animals, the children had a snack and played a game where one of the group had to represent an animal without speaking and the other companions had to find out the animal. Then, the children could feed rabbits, ducks and sheep. At lunchtime, we could go to the dining room, and we ate spaghetti. Later, we did a mask with plastic plates with the animal that they liked the most. The last thing that we did was see how the farmer milking a cow and how the children liked it so much, the next day in class we did an activity for the children

imitated the milking of a cow too. For this, we used gloves that we filled with milk and we tied. Then, we made small holes into gloves so that the milk left. Finally, the teacher distributed the child containers that they could pour the milk there. At last, we had to go back to school around six, but the important thing was that the children had a great day and had a lot of fun. BY NEREA RODRÍ GUEZ R ODRÍ GUEZ

TRIP TO MORELLA Last February our school visited the amazing town of Morella. We decided to travel there because of the possibility of enjoying the snow. Unfortunately, our wishes didn’t come true. However, the teachers prepared a lot of funny and interesting activities for the pupils. We arrived at 10 o’clock and we went to have a snack. After that, we had planned a visit to dinosaur museum of Morella. There was a useful experience because we were studying dinosaurs in our class. Children asked a lot of questions like “how dinosaurs became extinct?” or “which dinosaur was the

most

dangerous?” Our guide called Alba

After the visit of the museum it was time to lunch. It was recommended to the parents that the picnic would contain a sandwich, a bottle of water and a piece of fruit. So, every child had a picnic like this, and we went to the “Alameda”, a beautiful park located outskirts of the town. There, the pupils could enjoy the nature: they played freely through the little forest near the park. Moreover, the teachers suggested them to play traditional games like hide-and-seek, jump rope or steal the bacon. At 16 o’clock we went for a stroll to know more about Morella. The children could discover its traditions, for example “the Sexenni”, which is a special party celebrated every 6 years and it commemorates a religious promise. One of child of the class told us that he had visit Morella last year and he got the most out of “the Anunci”, the pre-party of “Sexenni”, in which the inhabitants dressed up, made original floats and threw tones of confetti. Finally, when we arrived at the entrance of the castle, our guide was waiting for us. Alba showed us all the curious corners of it and she explained too stories about the battles that took place there. At 19 o’clock while we going away, it started to snow! Kids were amazed and all of them wanted to stay more time in Morella. But, our trip was finished and we had to return. All of us had a great day! BY MI REI A CAM AÑES RO YO

CARNIVAL The children waited impatient For East carnival day, which began the morning of February 18.

First we did the decoration of the class with globes, every child I inflate a globe and later, with felt-tip pens, they decorated it representing the head and the face of a personage. Later both teachers and with the help of some parents organized the corner of makeup where they placed bars of makeup of different colors and a boat of cream for remove makeup with the humid taillight. And other one they liked where the children were decorating his masks since more them and as soon as they all had it they danced to the sound of a happy music. To the following day one assembled the parents which already are before informed on that material they had to bring to do the cultural disguises together with his children. Every child realized with the help of his parents his costume, decorating

snack with juice, cookies, delicacies, which the children enjoyed very much. It is necessary to highlight that this one is a fundamental day to transmit to the children values of the respect and that they accept and treat the others equally and that it is not important if it has another culture or origin. OCEANOGRAFIC On Wednesday, the 1st of March the pupils we enjoy of a day of conviviality in the OceanogrĂ fic of Valencia to learn in a practical way the different types

of

aquatic

animals

that

we

can

find

for

the

zone.

The Oceanografic of the City of the Arts and the Sciences is Europa's major aquarium, and in him the principal aquatic ecosystems of the planet are represented.

Every

building

is

identified

by

the

following

aquatic

environments: Mediterranean, Wetlands, Moderate and Tropical Seas, Oceans, Antarctic, The Arctic, Islands and Red Sea, besides the Delfinario, with 24 million liters of water and a depth of 10,5 meters. We took the school early bus to come and for the way we all sang the song of

"Bob esponja" and of the "sirenita" that the children liked them very

much. In the morning when we come, it was 11 o'clock for what before the entry we all sit down and have lunch to have energy to visit the whole Oceanographic one.

We had to Marcos, which he was

our guide who told us a heap of things on the aquatic animals, it made clear that we could not touch to none of them they

to call loudly and that the children must be always joined the group. In the evening we did a workshop on Pinniped where they explained to us everything related to walruses, marine lions and seals. Later we could visit sharks, belugas, penguins, Flemish and different types of fish. Of return in the bus we ask the children that it looked like to them the experience and we did riddles on the aquatic animals that we saw. It

TRIP TO THE PEÑISCOLA CASTLE In March our class visited the castle of Peñiscola. We decided to do this trip because we thought it was important for our students to know the history of the province. It was a great experience for everyone. First, we went on the school bus to Peñiscola town. When we arrived we ate mid-morning snack. Then everyone visited the old part of town. There we could see old houses and some touristics shops.

Secondly, we meet with the tourist guide, who was waiting for us in front of the castle. She told us that in this place had lived very important men, Papa Luna. Also, she told us that in the castle had been filmed some films and TV series. Next, we could visit some different parts of the castle like the dining room, the tower, the digeum and the museum. In all of these parts the guide explained to us the history of the castle. The most interesting thing of the visit was some olds suits armours that we saw in the museum. After that we ate outside the castle. Then the touristic guide gave the children some medieval costumes and all of them played if they were in medieval time.

Finally, wue said goodbye to her and we went back to

AN EXCURSION TO THE CITY CENTRE On the 31st of April we went on an excursion to the Valencia city center. We took advantage of the good weather and the desire of the children for a new outing. We caught the bus at 9.00 in the morning and we arrived in Valencia at 10.15am. There, we first went to the “Plaza del Ayuntamiento� to have a snack to get energy for the rest of the day. Some of the children

got wet playing with with the water fountain in the middle of the square, because it was 27 degrees. We put on suncream and the cap and we went on our way. We visited the “Plaza de la Virgen” and we went up to the “Miguelete”, which is the bell tower of the Cathedral of Valencia. The children climbed 207 steps but it did not matter because they were delighted to see Valencia from the top. Then, we were in the most commercial street of Valencia and the children could see the large number of shops, cars, people and the atmosphere that there was in that area. It was already 1.00pm so we went to the Turia river. There, we sat in the shade on the grass and ate our sandwiches. When we finished eating, we inflated some

water

balloons we

and

played

with

them.

After

about

five

minutes

walking,

we

arrived at the most famous park in Valencia: Gulliver. There, the children played and had a great time. At 5.00pm we took the bus back to Castellón and on the way we asked them what they liked most. They undoubtedly answered: The Gulliver park!.

TRIP TO THE GRAU BEACH One of the last trips we made was to the Grau beach so we could have a healthy picnic with the pupils. As you know, we only asked for the children to wear their swimming

suits

and

bring

their

own

sunscreen. We got in the bus with some toys and the food and got on rute. We had so much fun on the way to the beach! We sung different songs, played I Spy and remembered the basic rules we had to follow. To promote the use of english at home, playing I Spy is a great way to practice colors, letters and basic vocabulary. It can be really fun and entertaining for the children. It’s really easy, you only have to say “I spy with my little eye” and add a simple characteristic. When we got to the beach we applied the sunscreen -You always have to be protected against the sun!- and we started playing the games the teachers had planned. Between making sandcastles and digging in the sand, we almost forgot to play the sponge game! If you want to play this game any time you go to the beach or the swimming pool we’ll tell you how. You’ll need at least one sponge, to buckets and water. The game starts with one bucket full of water and another one empty. The objective is to fill the empty bucket using only the sponge. The children have to absorb as much water as they can with the sponge and squeeze it in the other bucket again and again. It seems really simple, but they love doing it and getting wet in the process! When we finished playing, we sat down on the towels to have the picnic. We had water and pineapple juice to drink and a chicken salad sandwich with greek yogurt instead of mayonnaise. The children loved it, this trip was definitely a success. INTERVIEW Teacher: Hello kids! Today I’m going to ask you some questions about the last trips we made during this year. Kids: Okaaaay! Teacher: Who wants to answer my questions? Juan: Me, teacher! Teacher: Perfect Juan, you will be the spokesperson of the class. So, what did you like the most? Juan: What we liked the most was the trip to “Oceanografic”. Teacher: Why? Juan: Because we saw a lot of different animals like birds, sharks or dolphins. Teacher:

recommend the trip to your friends? Juan: Of course, and we would repeat the trip with our family. Teacher: And what did you like the least? FOR THE CHILDREN

RECIPE OF THE BIRTHDAY CAKE The 11th of November was the birthday of two classmates and, taking advantage of the opportunity, we made a great chocolate cake. We asked the cooks permission and they told us that there was no problem if we wanted to cook in the school kitchen. It was a great day and the kids had a great time. But the best moment was when the children ate the cake. Most of the kids ended up with chocolate-stained faces and there was not one piece of cake left over. In view of the success that it had, we attach here the recipe of the cake if someone wants to make it at home. The measures of the ingredients are to make a cake for four people. Ingredients:  1 glass of sugar  4 eggs  2 tablespoon of vanilla extract  1 glass of oil  2 teaspoon of butter  8 tablespoon of cocoa Directions:  Pre heat your oven to 250 degrees.

 Combine all the dry and wet ingredients in a bowl and whisk together until well combined.  Put the dough into a cake-pan.  Bake for 35 minutes in an oven at 150 degrees until a knife inserted comes out clean. We hope you enjoy it again! BY PAUL A GARCÍ A BALL ESTER

BOTTOM OF THE SEA For this summer you could make this wonderful bottom sea. On these holidays you may not be near the beach but with this craft you will feel that you would be there. It is easy to do. If you want to make it, you will need some materials and you will follow some steps. Materials  A shoe box.  Scissors.  Glue or liquid silicone  Foamy: you need one blue glitter and

foamy of different colors.

Steps:  First, cut one side of the box shoe.  Secondly, stick the blue glitter foamy with glue or liquid silicone on the box shoe.  Next, cut the shape of different aquatics animals and plants.  Finally, stick the animals and plants on the blue glitter foamy. BY SARA FRANCO ROY
