Foreword by the President Adhering to the motto “To learn and to apply, for the benefit of mankind”, PolyU has been striving hard, over the past seven decades, to produce quality graduates to support the social and economic development of Hong Kong. In nurturing future pillars of our society, the University attaches great importance to students’ whole-person development. We offer students a wide range of learning opportunities to enhance their intellectual and physical well-being, and to develop their social awareness and sense of responsibility, which are among the key qualities for being a leader in today’s and tomorrow’s ever-increasingly competitive world. It is most pleasing to see that our concerted efforts have borne fruit and that our students’ achievements have gained wide recognition from various sectors of society. As in the previous editions, this “Star Book” showcases the competence and versatility of our most promising students. I hope you will enjoy reading it.

GENG Kun BSc (Hons) in Engineering Physics, Year 4

During my four years’ study at PolyU, I feel honoured to get to know several professors very well in this university. I can never forget those days and nights I talked with my professors in their offices: we shared, we argued, we laughed; the more I knew them, the more I learned form them, the more I loved them. I bet my eyes were shining all the hours while listening and speaking to them. Through all those talks I understood more, more about my subjects, my future and my life. Gradually I knew what my life is supposed to be, under the influence from my professors day and night. I would like to be a university teacher in the future as I would like to nurture young students in the future in the way they have for me. I hope that one day I will return to PolyU as a physics teacher, and devote the rest of my life to pursuing the beauty of physics, to cultivating youngsters’ interest in physics. Thank you, my professors! Thank you, my PolyU!

As a member of society, it is our duty to make a contribution towards the community. We should not only play a role in the future development of Hong Kong and even our world by working in various industries and solving everyday problems in this society, but also take our social and national responsibility applying our skills by participating in community services. We all have our own unique strengths. In order to explore our potential and achieve all-round development, we should try to participate in different kinds of activities and interact with different kinds of people, so as to ensure we lead a fruitful and meaningful life. Life is full of difficulties, but I have a belief – “If it’s not happening, it’s because you’re not doing it”. If you are just idling, a dream is only a fantasy. The dream will never come true unless you are really pursuing it, so take the first step and don’t give up easily!

In the early days when I was admitted to University, I once asked myself, - Why do we need to go to a University? Thanks to the all-round education, PolyU and SAO has provided me with so many opportunities to explore, to experience, to develop and to enrich my university live. By participating in the exchange programme at National University of Singapore and the one year placement programme at HKMA, I broadened my horizons, gained valuable insight and professional knowledge and built a solid foundation for my future career. The most memorable experience for me was joining and organising various local and overseas community service activities. Both my technical and soft skills were fostered. I discovered my potential and better understood the needs of our society. I often quote the motto of the PolyU “To learn and to apply, for the benefit of mankind”, as I always enjoy assuming responsibilities and contributing to the community by applying my knowledge. I will continue to serve and contribute to society, for a better life for all.

Always unlearn what you have learnt; revise, review and rethink” is what I have understood in these five years of university life. Learning can happen anywhere, at anytime. Learning is not only an action, but a reconstruction process of the individual internally. This entails revising what we have understood about received information before, reviewing the issues from different perspectives (e.g. the point of view of users or customers), rethinking previous decision in terms of degree of appropriacy, practicality and innovation. I am very grateful for the many opportunities PolyU has given to me during these five years. I have understood different existing situations/ issues through different design projects, experienced the power of teamwork in WZQ project in Taibai village, China, and widened my horizons in Chinese traditional wisdom through China study subjects. I am proud of being a PolyU graduate and believe all this experience will help me enormously in making contributions to our community later.

SPECIAL Student I am very grateful to have had the chance to study in PolyU. The five-year campus life has provided me with numerous activities that have made me more mature and confident. Being a committee member in Hall Association and Study Society has strengthened my leadership and interpersonal skills as it provided me with valuable knowledge like how to organize an O-Camp. Par ticipating in community service both in Hong Kong and Mainland China has taught me that to give is creates more happiness than to get; it also gave me wonderful time working with my teammates. The one-year overseas placement in Denmark not only equipped me with practical working experience but also allowed me to live an independent and colorful life that broadened my horizon. These activities along with other programs held by SAO enabled me to become a more competitive and all-round person. I believe the skills learned during years in PolyU are essential for my future career.

SPECIAL Student I am grateful to have grown with the help of SAO. Many say there is huge gap between school life and society. In my opinion, SAO provides the best transitional help for every PolyU student to eliminate such a gap. Indeed, there are various programmes offered by SAO targeting different recipients. For my case, I think LCSP camp is very beneficial because it provides a totally different way of viewing ourselves. It taught me how to share as well. CSLP suppor ts all kinds of self-initiated volunteer service. With the grants provided by SAO, I have designed three volunteer service programmes and contributed to the community. In addition, I built up my leadership skills and social responsibility at the same time. Special e-portfolio is another powerful tool for guiding oneself to better utilize university life. You can set goals, review them and write reflections all in e-portfolio. Do not waste your university time. Stay hungry and be fulfilled!

Our university life should not only be tr appe d by tones of books. Pa r t i c i p a t i n g i n d i f f e r e n t s o c i a l progr ammes equips us to be allrounded outstanding students. PolyU opens up many oppor tunities and encourages students to take par t in different social activities. For example, I joined the Sichuan Relief Work organized by the Model United Nations, the Malaysian AIDS project organized by AIESEC, and became E xter nal Vice President of Social Service Group in PolyU. In my view, taking part in volunteer service not only helps others but also the helpers themselves to grow in experience, knowledge and skills that will prove instrumental throughout their lives.

I am glad to be a member of the volleyball team, which is an energetic, dedicated and gregarious team. I enjoyed the training and competition with my teammates all year as all of us held the same goal: to be the champions of the USFHK competition. Winning the championship this year is the result of our efforts and proves our team spirit. Apart from representing the volleyball team, I wa s nominate d to be the vice chairman of the team working group last year, which I found a great pleasure. I learnt a lot from playing this role such as how to organise a function, communicate with the working group members and handle some issues I had never met before. It was quite different from being a normal student or a member of a volleyball team. It was an invaluable opportunity for me to gain more from my university life.

PolyU has given me lots of opportunities to explore my interests a n d s tr e n g th s . T h r o u g h a c tive l y participating in SAO programmes and being the Head of Public Relations in PolyU SIFE (Student in Free Enterprise), I have been trained to work with people of different cultural backgrounds, solve problems and manage my time wisely. I have be come more mature a nd confident in myself. All these fruitful experiences make me believe that anything is possible if I maintain an open-mind and a positive attitude. Apart from the practical knowledge learned in PolyU, the skills obtained from this exposure will definitely help me overcome future challenges in my life.

I am Ray! I am happy to be nominated as a  Star in this year's  STAR Book. During my PolyU life,  I spent much of my spare time participating in  cocurricular activities and extra-curricular activities, some of which are listed below. I believe that universities aim at educating all-rounded independentthinking individuals, and the curricular education is therefore not the only essential. Therefore, apart from the credits I gained from my professional education, I also treasure much of the experiences from those activities. Of all the activities, I would especially recommend the Mental Health Caring Project (MHCP). As we grow up, more and more competition and pressure leaves less time for us, and occupies our attention to the detriment of mental he alth. The one-ye a r progr a mme MHCP  is quite a good opportunity for any PolyU student to gain more professional knowledge and valuable experience in the mental health world, which could also help them to develop personality, psychological wellness and social responsibility.

Although academic achievement is extremely important, psychological development should not be ignored. During my university studies, I ‘diversified’ my learning portfolio. I am really grateful that POLYU gave me a lot of opportunities, such as PGDP, overseas exchange program. The experience I gained from Outward Bound Training and the Mental Health Caring Project are particularly unforgettable, I met a lot of great friends, saw more of the world differently and became more mature mentally. PolyU has provided me with a lot of opportunities, both in academic d e ve l o p m e n t a n d p syc h o l o g i c a l development. It also turned me from an ordinary secondary student into a high flyer. I am so grateful that I have entered the right university.

•• Providence Foundation Outward Bound Training Award 2008/09 •• Chiang Chen Overseas Exchange Scholarship 2008/09

Besides academic knowledge, psychological wellness should also be obtaine d in our universit y life and is also a key to success. Through psychological development workshops, I got basic understanding of psychological wellness and learnt how to encourage myself and nurture positive emotions. When I became a Mental Health Caring Angel, I began to care for my friends and help them solve their problems. When talking with them, I found myself relaxed and began to understand my friends and myself more deeply. I would like to participate in and hold other psychological wellness development activities as I think they will help me all my life.

Community Service is not just about "serving". It is also a way to learn. It helps me to explore the world and explore myself. In different projects, I have had chances to live with the weak and poor, and had chances to teach and play with minority groups. It is not always money that helps, but how you listen to them, care about them, understand them and show your love. The experience gained has helped me to be a more all-rounded person. It trained me  in communication, leadership, creativity, problem solving, and time management. And through various projects, I have even gained friendships with people from around the world.

PolyU has helped me to build a solid foundation in my academic study and also provided plenty of opportunities to make contributions to society. Together with my classmates, I organized many community service projects both in Hong Kong and Mainland China. I met various kinds of people and applied my professional knowledge to help them. These projects not only helped others, but also broadened my horizon and enhanced my social responsibility. I enjoyed serving the community. It created an unforgettable experience in my university life. I realize that a little can make a difference because a little help can often make big changes to the lives of people in need.

I have served and worked with different kinds of people and understood another side of our society. Through participating in community services, I applied my knowledge learnt from lessons to help people in need. Meanwhile, I learned and enhanced many skills like leadership, coordination and contingency handling which cannot be learned in class. Finally, I would like to take this chance to recommend that my fellow university students par ticipate in community services because it is not only good for society; it is also good for you!

It is quite a significant par t of my u n i ve r s i t y l i f e t o d o c o m m u n i t y services. Those experiences have given me a better understanding of society. I gradually understood that social care really can make a difference; plus, it always gives me incredible pleasure to see changes happening because of the small effort I put in. I have also achieved great personal development during the process of planning and i m p l e m e n t i n g va r i o u s vo l u n t a r y activities. It is a good chance to make new friends with a strong sense of responsibility. In the future, I hope I can apply my professional knowledge to help others and encourage more people to join groups who carry out community service.

I s e t my s e l f t h e g o a l s o f b e i n g independent, being expose d to different languages and widening my global outlook through working in countries with people from different cultures. The three-month internship in Zurich not only enabled me to appreciate and explore different cultures, but also helped me meet challenges and become more resourceful. In addition, I have improved my interpersonal skills and developed a more outgoing personality through meeting new friends. I am sure that it was a rare and invaluable opportunity for me to enrich my life experience and enhance my social skills; things that will definitely be beneficial to my future career.

Last summer, I worked as a summer trainee at Korea Institute of Material Scie nce. The inte r nship g ave me valuable access to a real research field. Through working together with professionals, I learnt to solve problems in a scientific way and understood the spirit of research: hard work. The twomonth internship not only taught me to be patient and work co operatively when handling unexpected problems, but also to be calm in the face of challenge. I also made remarkable improvements in my communication skills after working and living in a nonEnglish speaking country. It was a really rewarding experience that provided me with some new perspectives on my future career.

SUN Yining BEng (Hons) in Electronics and Information Engineering, Year 4

I worked as a Student Programmer in the IT Services Department of MTR Corporation last year. This internship, not only granted me a chance to transfer what I have learnt from classroom to workplace, but also exposed me to areas which I am unfamiliar with, e.g. information systems management. To deal with the challenges, I had to become a self-learner by learning new materials after work, which helped me pick up the job within a short period of time. Through this process I thoroughly practiced the analytical and research skills acquired at PolyU. I treasure this experience as it has been essential for my future career development.

Last summer, I was thrilled to gain an internship in Microsoft Hong Kong Limited. Working as a consulting intern, I was required to complete quality engagements and improve customer satisfaction. Working closely with different professionals and customers such as Cathay Pacific and The Hong Kong Jockey Club enabled me to get familiarized with technical and project management skills. The company allowed me to tr y many roles (e.g. Windows 7 Ambassadors), and my communication and interpersonal skills also improved a lot. The experience of working for big companies will benefit my future study and career. Not only have I discovered my own potential and interest through this internship, it has also been an invaluable experience which makes me more confident of success in the IT industry after graduation.

CHAN Yee Kwan BA (Hons) in Fashion and Textiles (Fashion and Textile Marketing and Merchandising), Year 3

It is my pleasure to be selected as one of the STAR students again. I would like to thank PolyU for the encouragement of my studies as well as the provision of valuable opportunities. PolyU has offered a way for me to make my dream come true – to be a member of the Hong Kong Police Force. Last summer, I joined the Auxiliary Police Undergraduate Scheme (APUS). The APUS’s training has broadened my horizon and enhanced my skills in critical thinking and problem solving. In the future, I will live up to PolyU’s motto – to learn and to apply for the benefit of mankind.

My study life has been enriched through the huge range of activities. The Global Student Challenge PolyU Pre-challenge Competition was a highlight of my university life. It proves that learning not only takes place inside classroom, as the competition provided me the opportunity to improve my skills in business plan writing and presentations. It also challenged me in managing time and quality simultaneously. Thanks to the valuable advice from teachers and schoolmates, our team’s idea was gradually developed into a concrete stage and was finally recognized. I will continue to take the initiative to develop my intellectual capabilities.

WONG Hei Nam BEng (Hons) in Product Analysis and Engineering Design, Year 2

At first, I cannot imagine I could have these achievements because of language of instruction in class. However, thanks to help from my classmates, teachers and the facilities in PolyU, I could get over the difficulty. I am glad that my effort has been rewarded by various scholarships from PolyU and the government. These scholarships gave me the power to continue trying my best on my studies. Also, thanks are due to donors and PolyU for supporting my exchange program in US in the face of my financial difficulties. I have had a great experience during the program which enriched my life and built up my confidence.

In my three years university life, I have enjoyed a lot opportunities from different organizations. These kinds of competition experience enhanced my critical and creative thinking, and especially my analytical and problem identifying capability. I am delighted th a t my e f fo r t s h ave p a i d of f by recognition through some competition awards and scholarships. Moreover, I become more confident and better equipped to face future challenge in my career and life. These achievements encouraged me and reminded me to keep striving for further improvement. I will always appreciate my teammates and tutors from PolyU. They really helped me a lot in my intellectual development.

CHENG Kok Ying BEng (Hons) in Product Analysis with Design, Year 3

It is my honour to be selected as a Student Star. I enjoy communicating wi t h p e o p l e a n d a p p r e c i a t e t h e ar t of speech. Given a chance to represent PolyU in the Metro Lion Cup Inter var sit y Spe e ch Contest was a challenging and unforgettable public speaking practice for me. In my 2nd year, through PolyU SAO, I was selected by Home Affairs Department as Hong Kong Delegate to go on a cultural exchange in Ireland and also I was employed by Haier Co. Ltd. working in PRC Qingdao. I would like to send my greatest thanks to SAO and show my appreciation for their work.

When I took the first lesson of my design studies, a Professor said that “Design is an artwork and creation, but it should be used to solve problems or to make objects become more perfect.” I understood the truth of this through some valuable experience. I broadened my network and horizons through some exhibitions, as I was working with different manufacturers and designers. This experience improved my communication skill as I had to cooperate with other organizations. I also experienced the different working methods of people who have different characters. When I graduated with a higher diploma from PolyU, I was selected into the final stage of graduation fashion runway show, one of 24 out of 130 students. I gained recognition from some famous Hong Kong Designers and companies, so the show opened up job opportunities for me. Even though I decided to go into further study, it gave me more confidence to develop my career in the fashion design industry.

JIN Xinyue BEng (Hons) in Mechanical Engineering, Year 1

I feel very happy to be selected as an Aesthetic Star. I am very interested in music, ar t and spor t, so I have pa r ticipate d in ma ny progr a ms organized by SAO. After I entered PolyU, I have learnt a lot about playing piano, flute, violin and guitar, which I never got the chance to play before. I am so lucky that I have both the well-organized classes and my dear schoolmates who have helped me to develop a sense of aesthetic. This ability is also helpful to my future career since the way to investigate beauty in the daily life is also the way to appreciate the people you work with.

•• 2010 Summer Intern of Dah Chong Hong (Motor Service Centre) Ltd. •• Department of Mechanical Engineering Scholarship for Hall Residents 2009/10 •• Volunteer of Online Buddy Programme for Non-local Students 2009/10 •• Actress in English Language Centre English Drama Club Annual Performance 2008/09 •• ISE Scholarship for Non-local (Chinese Mainland) Students 2008/09

It is a great honour for me to be selected as a star student in the aesthetics domain. When I was in year one, I went to Shanghai for a summer internship in the Shanghai Arts and Crafts Association to plan an exhibition of Chinese frog buttons, and design and produce the installations of the exhibition. This experience helped me to build up a network with the professionals in arts and crafts field in Mainland China and I still keep on introducing some art exhibitions in Hong Kong in journals and newsletters in Shanghai. Also, some of my artworks have been published in Shanghai publications.

The importance of life-long learning is probably the most important lesson that university life has taught me. During the past four years, PolyU has given me golden opportunities to participate in va r ious a c tivitie s s u c h a s th e international student exchange program so that I could learn from people from different backgrounds and improve my global outlook. More importantly, studying in university has taught me how to learn for a life-long purpose, including learning independently as well as learning from others when working in a team. These inspiring and meaningful experiences will definitely add value to my future development for the rest of my life.

QIN Bo BSc (Hons) in Applied Biology with Biotechnology, Year 4

•• HKSAR Government Scholarship 2008/09 & 2009/10 •• Department of Applied Biology & Chemical Technology Scholarship for Hall Residents 2009/10

I enjoyed the study time in PolyU, which was filled with laughs, tears, passion and achievements. I always keep in mind that life is short, and therefore I am trying to make the best use of every moment. I achieved straight 4 in every semester and participated i n va r i o u s l e a r n i n g p r o g r a m m e s such as the exchange programme to Cornell Universit y, and several community services like the Philippine ser vice learning trip. I took those opportunities to think, to learn, and as a preparation for the future. Among all the international applications, I was the only one who received a special global nutrition scholarship provided by a university in the U.S. I will continue to pursue my dream to contribute to the health improvement of the world.

Throughout the three years’ study, the systematic and high-quality education from PolyU has greatly sharpened my core competencies, such as analytical skills, problem solving techniques, and interpersonal skills. These abilities have allowed me to achieve academic excellence and work independently in the laboratory. I have been awarded several scholarships and made the Dean’s Honours List in the year 2007/08 and 2008/09. I have also taken part in the IAESTE program for a summer internship in the Scottish Agricultural Science Agency (SASA) which greatly enhanced my per sonal development. PolyU provided variable learning experiences for me and I believe these experiences will help me in my future career.
