A Look at the Lincoln Apartments 39 units of supportive housing

Learn about a development underway to bring 40 units of supportive housing for youth and individuals experiencing homelessness on Lincoln Boulevard in Venice.

services and community-space is proposed for the ground floor VCH says they plan on including parking for staff but “zero residential parking, as allowed by local and state codes for supportive housing.”

The project is currently pending approval by the City of Los Angeles Department of City Planning where VCH is requesting a state density bonus, with off-menu incentives for height, step-back, parking, loading zone, yards and passageway reductions, and floor area.

According to VCH, the project is exempt from California Environmental Quality Act

(CEQA) review under AB 1197, a state law passed fall of 2019.

Measure HHH funds have been secured

for the project. Additional funding sources would be secured after the land use approval process, VCH says.

Candidates Still Not Talking California Issue TOM ELIAS Yo! Venice Columnist

So…, as Elizabeth Warren would start out, the Democrats held a presidential primary debate in California, in the Westchester district of Los Angeles to be specific. And still California issues get virtually no attention on the national scene.

Even now, more than a month after that debate, with ballots appearing soon in mailboxes across the state, there’s still no substantial talk about California issues except from late-coming candidate Michael Bloomberg, the former New York mayor.

Nothing much on homelessness; no creative ideas from any candidate – or from President Trump, for that matter.

Nothing much on wildfire safety, other than condemnations of big privately owned utilities like Pacific Gas & Electric and Southern California Edison. No easy-tofollow formulas for buying them up and splitting them into local pieces.

Nothing on offshore oil drilling or fracking; certainly no hints on fighting off Trump administration efforts to expand both in California. Nothing on how to solve the state’s massive housing shortage and affordability crisis. Nothing on charter schools or Trump-spurred threats to

national parks and monuments.

Not a word on water or the bullet train, which will go nowhere without more federal funding.

What’s wrong here?

If there’s any real answer to the lack of attention to this one state that will choose far more Democratic nominating convention delegates than any other both in the March 3 Super Tuesday voting and during the entire primary season, it may lie in the way Democrats apportion delegates.

While Republicans employ a winnertake-all system giving almost all of every state’s delegates to whoever gets the most votes in a primary or caucus, even if that candidate only wins a plurality, Democrats employ proportional representation.

So no one running in California’s primary – basically separate elections in each of 53 congressional districts – will get the full pot of 495 delegates. Each district will annoint anywhere from 4 to 7 delegates, split among candidates who get at least 15 percent of the vote in a district.

Another 114 delegates go mainly to the overall statewide winner.

If all California’s Democratic delegates went to that overall winner rather than getting splintered, maybe the likes of Sens.

Warren and Bernard Sanders, ex-Vice President Joe Biden and former Mayors Bloomberg and Pete Buttegieg would be forced to learn about the many issues now

But today’s Democratic system doesn’t require this from them. Yes, they’ve become conversant with local candidates and issues in Iowa and New Hampshire, where the earliest votes and caucuses might provide momentum going into Super Tuesday states like California and Texas.

The Democrats crafted their system almost 20 years ago. They wanted to prevent anyone from getting all California’s delegates – or any other state’s – with a mere 25 percent or so of the votes but still beating out competitors who finish barely a percent or two behind in the total vote.

That leaves candidates open to damaging gaffes, like Sanders’ now-revoked endorsement of a far-left candidate in the race to replace Democratic Rep. Katie Hill in the 25th Congressional District stretching from Simi Valley into the High Desert of Los Angeles County. Yes, Cenk Uygur agreed with Sanders on most things, but the podcaster and former conservative has a history of homophobic and sexist rants.

Sanders’ California staff advised him not to endorse, but he did anyway and

ran into a buzz saw, then withdrew the endorsement after barely a day. Would this have happened if Sanders had studied California issues and knew how strong the LGBT and feminist movements are here?

Instead, Sanders, like every other national candidate this year except Bloomberg, has viewed California almost entirely as a cash register, some candidates – like Buttegieg – even going to great lengths to conceal the luxury of several fund-raising venues.

Will this all add up to yet another failed effort to give California more influence in choosing presidents by moving the primary ahead from its traditional June date? It’s too early to tell. For one thing, Bloomberg is concentrating time and money here heavily, hoping to make up for his late start by doing well here. Plus, if the very early small-state primaries yield contradictory results, California can still be a bellwether.

Man Jumps to Death in Venice Coroner rules Tuesday incident death by suicide

The Los Angeles Coroner confirmed reports from the NextDoor app that a man was found deceased near the intersection of Thornton Ct. and Speedway in the afternoon of February 18th.

Coroner’s Davoud Ismaili, age 84, suffered multiple blunt force traumatic injuries when

he fell from a nearby building. The Coroner’s investigation has ruled his death a suicide.

Neither the Los Angeles Police or Fire Departments were able to confirm additional NextDoor reports of a decedent near the intersection of Rose Ave. and 4th Ave.

Venice Boulevard 7-Elevens Robbed Semi-automatic handgun used to demand cash

Los Angeles police are investigating a pair of robberies that occurred this week within a span of 10 minutes at two convenience stores on Venice Boulevard.

According to the Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD), the robberies occurred at two convenience stores located in the 12400 block of Venice Boulevard and the 11100 block of Venice Boulevard. While the LAPD would not release the name of the businesses, both of those blocks have 7-Eleven stores on them.

The LAPD says that on February 19, 2020, at 5:05 a.m. and 5:15 a.m., a lone male suspect

“Once the clerk was distracted, the suspect produced a black handgun, held the clerk at gunpoint and demanded money. Out of fear, the clerk complied and turned over an undisclosed amount of money. The suspect quickly exited the store and fled the scene. Since both convenience stores are approximately one and a half miles from each other, investigators believe the suspect may have had a getaway car nearby,” the LAPD said in a press release.

According to the LAPD, the suspect is described as a 35 to 45-year-old male Black.

Venice Homeless Shelter Opens 154-bed bridge housing center operational

Mayor Eric Garcetti and Councilmember Mike Bonin Tuesday celebrated the opening of the Pacific Sunset A Bridge Home facility in Venice, which will provide 100 beds for homeless adults and 54 beds for transitional age youth.

“The homeless and housing crisis is a citywide challenge that requires citywide solutions,” said Mayor Garcetti. “Today’s opening is a reminder that people across Los Angeles are saying ‘yes’ to delivering the housing, healing, and hope our unhoused neighbors need and deserve.”

“A roof and a bed will replace a tent and a sidewalk for many of our unhoused neighbors who have been sleeping in encampments in Venice.

This is a big and important step in our long march to confront our homelessness crisis,” ” added Councilmember Bonin.

The Pacific Sunset site is the tenth A Bridge Home facility to open, bringing the total number of beds made available by the program to 673.

The city remains on-track to stand up a total of 26 A Bridge Home sites, filled with about 2,000 beds, by July 1. This site features 100 beds for single adults — 66 men and 34 women — and 54 beds for transitional age youth — 36 men and 18 women. Pacific Sunset is the first A Bridge Home site to be partially dedicated to serving young people experiencing homelessness.

We’ve shown the city and the world how everyday citizens can step up and champion innovative and empathetic solutions that reduce homelessness and saves lives,” added Will Hawkins, a Venetian who helped champion Pacific Sunset when it was considered by the Venice Neighborhood Council’s Homelessness Committee and who now leads the non-profit organization Chamber of Hope.

While residents are not required to be sober, no drugs or alcohol will be allowed on site.

In addition, there will be 24/7 security and onsite services including case management, mental health care, substance abuse treatment and housing placement.

According to the City Administrative Officer of Los Angeles, the shelter’s capital cost is $8.5 million, $4.1 million of which came out of city funds. The shelter’s operations, to the tune of $5.6 million, will be funded by the state’s Homeless Emergency Aid Program (HEAP).

PATH will be the lead operator of the site and will work with the Venice-based SPY, which will also provide services at the temporary facility, which will provide 100 beds for adults and 54 beds for youth.

“Bridge housing is an important first step in the process of moving our most vulnerable into permanent supportive housing. We are grateful for the partnership of Safe Place for Youth, local organizations and the support of Councilmember Bonin and Venice community members for helping us move people living on the streets into a safe home,” said Jennifer Hark-Dietz, Executive Director of PATH. lot that takes up an entire block between Pacific Avenue and Main Street south of Sunset Avenue.

MTA closed the lot in 2015 after receiving multiple offers from developers interested in the site. The property can be used temporarily for housing, however, because there is no deal in place.

The project has not been without controversy.

Opponents have raised issue with the shelter’s location, worrying that the site will disrupt the mostly residential neighborhood. In addition,

there has been concern raised about the housing being within a 1,000-foot radius of Westminster Elementary School.

The Venice Stakeholders Association is in the midst of a legal battle against the City of Los Angeles over the project, saying the environmental review was unjustly fast-tracked and did not take into account an increase in noise levels from individuals in the shelter or its air conditioning units.

“Romancing Peace” The “out of the box” play with a cast of 10 had a successful LA premiere on June 31, 2019, at Fanatic Salon Theatre receiving a cover story article in the Culver City News and entertaining a packed house. The next engagement is the encore on Thursday, March 19 at the Beyond Baroque theatre in Venice.

The romantic comedy is about a pro-military singer-songwriter from Tupelo Mississippi, who falls in love with a California peace activist.

There are fictional storylines throughout the play. Will she fall in love with him despite their political and cultural differences? Will he support her peace activism especially her wanting to be semi-nude in a protest on Venice beach? What tragic event makes him rethink his pro-military ideology?

However, the ending is factual presenting a new rationale that world peace is not a dream for the first time in history.

The journey to writing the play “Romancing Peace” by playwright Dan Wunsch was anything but planned.

In Nashville, Wunsch, besides being the editor of Nashville Music Guide, was a successful songwriter with seven of songs recorded by independent artists including David Frizzell, a Grammy-nominated country singer.

However, he relocated to LA in 2013 to pitch scripts, not songs, with four fully written scripts and legal representation by LA entertainment lawyer Eric Weissmann, a former VP of Warner brothers, A chance meeting with Oliva Tsu, a world

class violinist and founder of Silicon Beach Philharmonic and Chorale, changed this. He pitched his song, “Let Us Play In Peace In Our World” to her, and the original composition was awarded the Children’s Song Of The Year in 2015 by her non-profit.

That unexpected award, his meeting an LA female activist and his passion for writing art to make a difference inspired Romancing Peace.

Many of the cast from the premiere will be returning including Gary Gibson (actor and singer-songwriter), Nilou Kashfi (actor), Roz O’Connor (actor), Gary Tang (actor), Dan Wunsch (actor, singer-songwriter, playwright).

Michael Lindley, the head of the Veterans For Peace Organization in LA, will end the play with a dedication to John Kennedy and will recite his last words to the American people in his speech to the Dallas Trade Mart found in his pocket on November 22, 1963.

The encore performance of “Romancing Peace” is on Thursday, March 19th at 7 pm, at Beyond Baroque Theater in Venice.

One person was transported to a trauma center when their car fell off the top of a sixstory parking structure and crashed into the McDonald’s at 1540 2nd St. On Sunday, February 23 2020, at 12:18 a.m., the Santa Monica Fire Department (SMFD) responded to a traffic collision with a physical rescue. Three people were inside the vehicle but two managed to escape before it fell off a parking

structure at 2nd Street and Colorado Avenue.

According to the Santa Monica Police Department (SMPD) the driver drove his vehicle, a newer model Jeep vehicle, off the top level of the parking structure.

“Officers are still investigating the cause of the incident. Due to the fact the driver was transported to the hospital and receiving medical treatment, they were unable to determine if alcohol or drugs played a factor in the incident,” the SMPD said in a news release.

Firefighters worked to stabilize the vehicle and extricate one person. Paramedics transported the driver, a 20-year-old male from Twentynine Palms, California, to a local trauma center in

critical condition.

As of Sunday evening, the driver was recovering and in stable condition.

According to the SMFD, the building and parking structure suffered significant damage.

The Building and Safety Department will access the structural integrity of the parking structure.

The SMPD are conducting an investigation of the accident.

In an update released later on Sunday, the SMPD said they have obtained a warrant for the driver’s blood to determine if drugs or alcohol were a factor in the incident.

In addition, the SMPD said that two additional individuals with the driver prior to the incident.

The Los Angeles Travel Show was held this weekend with remarkable places to visit from Switzerland to Machu Picchu.
