The Pride LA 9.2.22

On July 26, a group gathered in Harvey Milk Promenade Park to celebrate the 32nd anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act and the fi rst Disability Pride event held in downtown Long Beach. Passing the ADA made it illegal to discriminate against people with disabilities in employment, transportation, public accommodations, communications and access to state and local government programs and services, according to the U.S. Department of Labor. Rally attendees proudly held signs that read, “Disability Rights are Human Rights,” “Disabled and Proud,” “Brown, Disabled, Proud,” and “Disability is Diverse,” according to an article published by the Signal Tribune.

“What really motivated me to put on the Disability Pride rally is the lack of disability visibility,” said Jennifer Kumiyama, event organizer and Long Beach ADA coordinator. “I think it’s important for people with disabilities to have an opportunity to be seen and to be heard, and to advocate for the things that they need. And I think that it’s only appropriate that we celebrate our beautiful differences in disability on the day that is the anniversary of the ADA.” In Long Beach, there are over 46,000 working-age people and over 9,000 schoolaged children living with disabilities, according to a 2018 report by RespectAbility. Jake Jakubowski, a Long Beach resident and transgender man who uses a wheelchair, attended the rally hoping to make more connections in his community, the Signal Tribune reported.

“I really appreciate that this is a queer and trans inclusive space because I feel like sometimes that gets left out of the conversation on disability,” Jakubowski told the Signal Tribune. “And so it’s nice to see a multiracial and gender inclusive and sexuality inclusive kind of event here.”

Coffee shop closed its doors after 27 years of operation By SuSan Payne Starbucks on the corner of Santa Monica Boulevard and Westmount Drive is now closed.Affectionately called “Big Gay” Starbucks, the coffee shop closed its doors after 27 years of operation. On the day of its closing, July 31, store manager Acacia Blenchard told the WeHo Times, “It’s been a day full of heartbreak. We’ve been saying goodbye to the entire community. So now we’re asking everyone to leave so our partners can have a moment of decompression. We want to say our own goodbyes to this space and console each other privately.”

An employee of the Starbucks told WeHo Times the closure was due to safety and security concerns. Sixteen other locations in Seattle, Los Angeles, Philadelphia, Washington D.C., Portland and Oregon have or are in the process of closing.

The idea of getting a security guard would only be good for eyewitness accounts. We’re having a lot of issues that seem to be escalating. There have been fights over things. The employee said business has been steady at the WeHo Starbucks, but the escalation of heated arguments and confrontations that have become physically aggressive is one of the reasons for its closure.“There is a higher crime rate in West Hollywood right now,” said the barista. “Unfortunately, it is reflecting inside our store. On her third try, Murray passed, and went on to become captain of her graduating class – the only Black, only woman and only lesbian in the class. A traffic accident in Calabasas in which a mother survived, but her four children didn’t, spurred Murray to end her career.

“In the ambulance all the mother talked about were plans she had made for her children. We weren’t allowed to tell her they were dead. I said to myself, I can’t do this anymore,” Murray told the LA Blade. Now, Murray works with the Stars Behavioral Group in Long Beach, helping foster and transitional-aged adolescents.

California penal code 422.6(b), reads: “No person … shall knowingly deface, damage, or destroy the real or personal property of any other person for the purpose of intimidating or interfering with the free exercise or enjoyment of any right or privilege secured to the other person by the Constitution.” It is unclear whether the Santa Barbara County District Attorney’s Office will file the charges.Community leaders gathered Wednesday to raise a new Pride flag and address the theft and burning of the previous flag.

July 28 incident remians under investigation

The Santa Barbara County Sheriff’s Office (SBDS) is looking to file charges against two individuals involved in an alleged theft and destruction of Pride flags in the Santa Ynez Valley community of Los Olivos. On July 28, deputies responded to the 2900 block of Nojoqui Avenue in Los Olivos to investigate a report of a stolen pride flag, the department stated. Deputies spent several days investigating the report, collecting physical evidence, interviewing victims and witnesses and tracking down a video of a burning Pride flag shared on social media. Deputies identified two individuals as suspects in the theft who admitted to another flag theft in the Ballard area. SBSD stated that deputies have been in consistent communication with the parties involved, as well as community leaders who have voiced concern over these incidents.

“I put myself in that position and started thinking, ‘what if that was me, or my mother or cousin?’ I’d want to know someone was rooting for my return, especially the Black LGBT community,” Murray told The Los AngelesJeffreyBlade.C.King, a community activist and executive director of ‘In The Meantime Men,’ offered her a place to hold the peace rally and a staff to make it happen.

“We’re trying to share our platform with them basically,” Plantiitas co-owner Diaz told the Signal Tribune. “We know it’s hard to start a business. There’s so much that goes into it that even we didn’t realize when we were getting started.”

The idea has been harboring for more than a year, Diaz said. During this process, Diaz said the two have been paying the lease on both locations, along with added fees and labor to turn the old storefront into a community-friendly layout, according to the Signal Tribune. Diaz said the need for a space such as this become apparent as they have been building relationships with many LGBTQ and Latinx vendors and residents on their Fourth Street location.

Plantiitas Market hours are Wednesdays through Fridays 11 a.m. to 6 p.m., and Saturdays and Sundays from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.Vendor applications can be found here.

The new marketplace will provide a permanent location for LGBTQ+, immigrant, disabled and other minorityowned vendors. In the coming months, Diaz said the space will also be used by vendors to host workshops, events and meetings with clients.

“There’s so many intersectional barriers and challenges and a lot of people like us I don’t think feel seen on Retro Row right now. So I think things like that keep us motivated to know there are people who are being inspired, people whose businesses are being changed for the better,” Diaz said, holding back tears. “There’s a lot of people who are being touched by what we’re doing. And that keeps us going.” More than 20 vendors of Plantiitas met in July for an open house to discuss plans for the marketplace, which eventually turned into a mission to lock down the location and start collaborations. “So my husband and I have been — we’re exhausted and we’re really tired. It feels like we haven’t had a day off in quite some time,” Diaz said. “As a matter of fact, we haven’t and we’re having to balance all of the work and the demands that we have coming our way, while still kind of maintaining our mental, physical and emotional health. And it’s a lot it’s a lot to juggle. It’s not easy.” One vendor, Beau Beatrix, a queer, transgender Black and Filipino, neurodivergent and disabled artist, attended the initial July meeting. Beatrix became disabled after a work injury and couldn’t leave his home for more than a year due to being immunocompromised. From his pain, Beatrix started Owie Artwork, a hypoallergenic and size-inclusive jewelry business.“Istarted making my own jewelry and then made things to give to my partner,” Beatrix said. “And then at some point, something clicked, and I was like I could sell this kind of thing. I could maybe find a way to support myself.” Beatrix is one of the vendors who will get a chance at having a brick-and-mortar location through the marketplace. “I never expected to have physical space,” Beatrix said. “There’s something really special about a collective of artists being given equal footing, and a physical location to sell things. In theory, if it was successful, I feel like other spaces could follow the same model.”
