When well-known local artist Roseta Santiago and I developed the Canyon Road Paint Out, our primary goal was to allow art lovers and enthusiasts the opportunity to interact with artists as they work, and to see a painting being created. We were hoping for meaningful interaction—a simple yet pure motive. Eight years later, the Canyon Road Paint & Sculpt Out has become one of our community’s signature events. Many of Canyon Road's galleries have embraced it, inviting more distant artists and scheduling concurrent exhibitions. I am so gratified to see how many artists have taken advantage of this interaction with art lovers. Many a painting is sold right off the easel, much to the joy of all involved. Then came the children. Always looking for a charity angle, we invited local schoolchildren to perform music in front of the galleries and in a parade up Canyon Road. Their joy, talent, and smiling faces brought the feeling of community that embodies what Canyon Road represents to all of us. Moreover, it helps raise money for music programs in our local schools. I encourage you to join us this weekend for the Canyon Road Paint & Sculpt Out—especially on Saturday, when art, artists, children, music, fall colors, and smiling faces come together to form the magic of a generous, loving, and cohesive community that celebrates the creative process in all forms.
