2017-18 season

2017-18 SEASON

Dear Santa Barbara Symphony Family, I am excited and proud to present to you our musical program for the 2017-18 season. Our dedicated and wonderful musicians never cease to impress us with great music-making. In our tradition of leadership and collaboration, the Santa Barbara Symphony and I are thrilled to bring together–once again–various local arts organizations to enrich our music lovers’ experience through a diversity of art genres. To name a few examples: the State Street Ballet will collaborate with us on Mozart’s emotionally dramatic Requiem, the Santa Barbara Choral Society will join us for a musical celebration of Leonard Bernstein’s 100th anniversary, and you will experience a screening of the film The Red Violin with live orchestra performing the film’s Academy Awardwinning score by John Corigliano. At the center of our 2017-18 season, we will bring you beloved masterpieces: Mahler’s 6th Symphony, Rimsky-Korsakov’s Scheherazade, Tchaikovsky’s 5th Symphony, and Bizet’s L’Arlésienne to name a few. We will share the stage with phenomenal guest artists who will perform some of the most beautiful concerti in the repertoire such as Rodrigo’s Guitar Concierto d’Aranjuez, Barber’s Violin Concerto, Liszt’s Piano Concerto and more. I wish to express my sincere and profound thanks to you, our loyal audience, for being the most valuable partner and key to our success. Your support inspires our creativity, and strengthens our desire to always strive for the highest musical levels. Musically yours, Nir Kabaretti

I am so excited to announce the Santa Barbara Symphony’s new season at the beautiful Granada Theatre! This season is packed with exceptional musical experiences for everyone from start to finish. I couldn’t be more proud of this organization or its extended family of supporters and benefactors. We pride ourselves on dynamic and appealing programming, uniting the community through collaborations, bringing world-class artists to Santa Barbara and providing vital youth music education programs. Bold experimentation is included in this season’s programming starting with Mozart’s monumental Requiem with world premiere choreography by William Soleau, performed by the State Street Ballet and accompanied by a chorus of local singers. We are also launching our firstever Artist-in-Residence program with guitarist extraordinaire Pablo Sáinz Villegas. This new Artist-in-Residence program is very exciting as Pablo will be performing on our main subscription series and at smaller events. He will also be working with our expanding Music Education Center on multiple outreach opportunities. Other wonderful highlights include a double violin feature with Grammy Award-winning violinist Anne Akiko Meyers and our very own concertmaster, Jessica Guideri, the massive Sixth Symphony by Mahler, a tribute to Leonard Bernstein in his upcoming Centennial Anniversary and more! Please take the time to peruse our 2017-18 season brochure. As always, the Symphony stands ready to answer any questions you may have. I look forward to sharing it with you! Kevin A.
