Trips for TWO For 26 years, Steven Shulem has been helping travelers plan great trips. “My specialty is cruises,” says the president of Santa Barbara-based STRICTLY VACATIONS, “but we do everything. I’ve been to all seven continents and every five-star hotel. I love talking to people about what’s good and what’s not.” That includes guiding honeymooners on their postwedding getaways, which have taken a new twist in recent years: “It used to be that people would get married on a Saturday and then relax on a beach in Hawaii or the Caribbean for a few days or a week,” he says. “Now honeymoons are way more exotic, longer, and more adventurous. Folks want things that are more exciting!” Popular destinations include India, Bhutan, and the Seychelles, where you can cruise on a 26-person yacht that has its own two-person submarine for undersea excursions. Also cool are new five-star all-inclusives, particularly on Mexico’s Riviera Maya. “Thailand is very romantic,” Shulem adds. “You could go to a beach for a few days, then to the north, and on to the craziness of Bangkok.” In general, “there’s more choice of upscale properties in exotic places. Vietnam and Cambodia used to be rugged two-star getaways. Now there are amazing hotels.”
