one of eight communities to be recognized for the RWJF 2017 Culture of Health Prize. City leaders, residents, and San Pablo EDC have been working diligently since 2011 to address priorities of health, safety, youth services, and jobs. Economic opportunity (e.g., jobs, entrepreneurship) is a crucial factor in health which is why San Pablo EDC creates paths to living-wage careers through job readiness porgrams, training, and small business development. A multitude of Community Services and Police Department programs made San Pablo stand out.

Congressman Mark DeSaulnier announced, “I am incredibly proud of the hard work and dedication San Pablo has demonstrated in caring for the overall well-being of its residents. Through specific and targeted investments in workforce training, community support, and youth recreation and services— like the local police department investing personal resources to help educate and empower young people—San Pablo is serving as a role model for communities across California and nationwide. It is an honor to represent San Pablo in Congress.”

A LLOECTATLE RL EFARDOEMR ST H E M A Y O R

FROM THE MAYOR’S DESK How fast time flies! 2017 was the year of innovation for San Pablo, and now, 2018 is upon us. The City continues to make tremendous strides to improve the quality of life for its residents. Notably, in August 2017, it we celebrated the ground-breaking for the new 22,000 square foot state-of-art San Pablo Library. Recently, the City also celebrated the ground-breaking of a 7,500 square foot Women, Infants and Children (WIC) building in Plaza San Pablo. The new WIC building will be a welcomed community asset to San Pablo families, providing much needed resources to mothers and children. The San Pablo City Council and I are looking forward to the opening of this facility in the upcoming year! Also planned for 2018 is construction of a new San Pablo City Hall and a new County Fire Station #70. The City continues to make significant economic development investments into our community that will greatly benefit our residents in the years to come! Stay tuned for more information of these exciting projects. With the help of San Pablo Economic Development Corporation and its “Local FIRST” initiatives, things look even brighter for the future. I want to thank everyone who contributes to making our City better and thinking Local FIRST! San Pablo is thriving!! Cecilia Valdez, Mayor Yours Truly, Cecilia Valdez, Mayor of San Pablo

At age 14, Marco was recruited by a local gang, which brought his world crashing down when his best friend was murdered. After deciding to exit gang lifestyle, Marco inspired many friends to join him. His mother told him to check out a career in real estate. “I almost quit, but my mom encouraged me to move along. So I stayed. In fact, I sold 12 homes to people who exited the same gang. Since 2003, my real estate business has gotten really busy. A big part has to do with my wife, Vanessa, who is also my rock and business partner.” Regarding his recent success closing a home for a San Pablo EDC WISH client, Marco says: “Juan and I share the same faith, so as Christians, we believe God provided all the circumstances to make the home purchase successful despite coming in fourth in a bidding war of 17 people, including some cash offers.” The gratitude from the change in his life’s trajectory still motivates Marco. His fortune propels him to be an active participant in the betterment of society. In his free time, Marco goes to schools to talk about his past, in hopes of inspiring the youth the avoid the long, arduous road he traveled.

“We had a fire last year which was a long recovery process, but when we reopened, we had complete community support.“

RAJ & THAVISINH HUNDAL H.S. Fish & Chips, 3550 San Pablo Dam Rd

www.tinyurl.com/hsfishchips • Tue-Sat 9:30am-9:00pm Written By: Vivian C. Wong, Translated by: Nora V. Ruiz

Raj, from Gujarath, India, and Thavisinh, a refugee from Laos, met as teenagers in Richmond, CA in 1992 and married the following year. Fast forward twenty years, four children and five dogs, Raj and Thavisinh liquidated their assets to open up H.S. Fish & Chips in Sobrante Plaza, named after Raj’s father, Amir Singh Hundal Sahib, who passed away in 2010. “To our surprise, it’s been successful. We had a fire last year which was a long recovery process, but when we reopened, we had complete community support. That allowed us to flourish like never before. Customers came in after we reopened and brought us plants, food, and even kissed us,” Raj recalls fondly. “We would like to expand in multiple locations throughout the Bay Area over the next five years and are looking for investors now. I think we can do this. Balancing a family of six and running a business is really hard. We hope our kids see us as good examples of being hard workers.”
