F ro m t h e May o r ’ s Desk

by Mayor Cecilia Valdez, City San Pablo

2017 is the Year of Innovation for San Pablo. Our community is engaged and strives to impact our residents in a positive way every day. Thank you for your part in creating safer neighborhoods, better parks, and a stronger economy. Thank you for shopping Local FIRST and spending your hard-earned dollars within our community.

Through sales tax Measure K (2014), our EMS squad at Fire Station 70 is able to respond quickly to calls for service which provides higher level care and saving our tax payers money. Through sales tax Measure Q (2012), we boosted recreation services, expanded our Community Schools Initiative, supported the police department’s Cadet, School Resource Officers, and GREAT programs, trained an unprecedented number of residents in living-wage careers, and provided transformative tattoo removal. Explore an evolving San Pablo. Look for Plaza San Pablo’s continued development with the new, stateof-the-art San Pablo Library (opening July 29, 2017), a potentially new expanded County Medical Services building, and a new City Hall project in the works. Our municipal broadband initiative is advancing, promising faster, more secure internet services for local businesses and residents. Contra Costa Fire is partnering with the City to replace aging Fire Station 70. A new digital LED freeway sign initiative is underway to help promote the City and its many attributes. I will see you on July 4th at the El Portal Fields where we host a free, music-filled celebration complete with fireworks. Yours Truly, Mayor of San Pablo

letter from the Mayor | SAN PABLO LOCAL FIRST

From L to R: Chris Yee, Nhan Ngo, Linda Ly, Zach Ho, and Hai Troung, owners of Rockin’ Crawfish in San Pablo

Rockin’ Crawfish Wins Small Business of the Year 2017 by Vivian Wong

Rockin’ Crawfish in San Pablo’s College Center is a dining experience that is fun, relaxing, and filled with fresh seafood options. Chris Yee, Nhan Ngo, Zach Ho, and Hai Truong opened Rockin’ Crawfish on August 24, 2015 with live seafood, large screens, and markers for customers, not sure what would happen next.

Thank you to Marin Clean Energy, our SBOTY mixer Diamond Sponsor! Ruby sponsors were San Pablo Dental Care, First Bank, and Salesian College Preparatory.

“The restaurant business is one of the hardest industries to succeed in. The competition is so fierce,” said Zach Ho. With 30 employees from the surrounding area taking care of a hopping dinner scene, Rockin’ Crawfish is set to grow. As young entrepreneurs, the four friends are learning new lessons on staff training and management every month. You can expect consistently excellent and attentive customer service. Don’t be surprised if one of the owners is helping take care of you or doing the dishes. Staff say it is their #1 reason to work there: owners who care and do whatever needs to be done to deliver fresh food and quality service every time.

D

Join them Sunday to Thursday 2-10:30 PM and Friday – Saturday 2-10:30 PM (opens at 1 PM on Saturday & Sunday). Let’s give a big Rockin’ round of applause to these hardworking small biz owners and staff!

“Being a small business owner is hard work. We started off not knowing what we were doing. But now we say, ‘Keep it rockin’!” - Zach Ho, Rockin’ Crawfish, San Pablo

Alex’s Giant Burger takes home Small Biz of the Year Honorable Mention

ALEX’S GIANT BURGER

From L to R: Tae, Alex, Hannah, Sgt. Sohng Yook

While Hannah and Alex Yook are proud to be named Small Biz of the Year Honorable Mention, they are even prouder of their two sons, both of whom attended the celebratory mixer, which took place right before one son’s Marines deployment to Pearl Harbor. Their acceptance speech at the Small Biz celebration mixer brought tears as the Sgt. Songh Yook recounted how tirelessly his parents have worked to keep their restaurant business. Hats off to the Yook family! Thank you for your service!

Neighborhood Stabilization

What makes Alex’s Giant Burger so important is their role in stabilizing the neighborhood, sparking a transformation. Rumrill & Market Ave in San Pablo is now a place to gather and create sweet memories, especially when you top off your meal with a delicious thick chocolate milkshake. Surrounding businesses are thriving, jobs are being created, and it’s genuinely one of the tastiest neighborhoods to eat in. Outside Alex’s Giant Burger Inside Alex’s Giant Burger

“In the beginning, it was so hard. But now, we have so many customers!” - Hannah Yook, Alex’s Giant Burger

Animal Care Clinic wins Small Biz of the Year Honorable Mention

Dr. Michael Evans and his amazing team bring pets back to health with compassion, care, and skill. Dr. Evans has been hard at work creating a nonprofit arm to fund much needed medical care for animals without homes or belonging to owners who are in financial tight spots. Now, animals from 50 rescue organizations, including Milo Foundation and Animal Refugee Center, can get the care they need and find forever homes. Dr. Evans & Carrie Gadek

Kelly, Animal Care Clinic

Local Job Creation and Community Leadership

Dr. Evans believes in investing in his staff, many of who start at entry level and get support to go through school & training. When Animal Care Clinic first started, there were 7 employees. With 65 employees and growing, they are set to expand in the near future. Thank you, Animal Care Clinic, for creating excellent jobs and demonstrating what community leadership looks like.

COMMUNITY HEROES

CONSUELO LARA LOCAL EDUCATORS FOR TOMORROW www.facebook.com/localeducatorsfortomorrow Written By: Ren Floyd-Rodriguez & Vivian C. Wong

After earning teaching degrees from Mills College and Stanford, Consuelo Lara eventually took a position at Helms Middle School in San Pablo and Richmond High School, teaching English learners for the past 30 years. Early on, Consuelo emerged as a leader, spearheading district teacher trainings and became a teacher’s union representative. She is active in Senior Peer Counseling and Concilio Latino, among other organizations. “I’ve always wanted to be a teacher. They were my heroes.” Now in retirement, Consuelo dedicates her time to making strong connections between schools and the community through her nonprofit, Local Educators for Tomorrow, to address the teacher shortage and elevate the perception of teaching. Her mission is to bring back students to teach in the schools they once attended. This home-grown movement connects students with scholarships, mentors, and resources to ensure their academic success and future career in teaching.

Regarding retirement, Consuelo says, “People think when you retire, that’s the end, but for me, it’s been the opposite and I love it.”

In Loving Memory

Chaosarn S. Chao November 6, 1950 - April 5, 2017

Chaosarn S. Chao, Co-Founder, President and CEO of Lao Family Community Development (www.LFCD.org), passed away on April 5, 2017. Mr. Chao’s devotion, leadership, and vision profoundly shaped the vision and direction of Lao Family Community Development. “In honor of Mr. Chao, a matching fund has been set up in his name to support Lao Family Community Development to establish THE CARE COMMUNITY CENTER PROJECT in Oakland, which breaks ground in June 2017,” says his daughter, Kathy Chao Rothberg, former Mayor of San Pablo. Mr. Chao and over 1,000 residents and supporters have worked for a decade to build a $15M, 30,000 sq. ft. mixed use building to serve more than 10,000 needy families in the Bay Area in the following four areas: culinary, arts, recreation, and education. The center will support, train, and advance disadvantaged youth, adults, and vulnerable elders with disabilities from refugee, immigrant, and US backgrounds to help themselves and their communities. LFCD is a premier social service and community development non-profit agency headquartered in Oakland. LFCD has seven satellite offices in San Pablo, Oakland, and Sacramento. The agency also has a staff of 62 individuals, providing services in over 25 languages and over 40 diverse nationalities, serving more than 15,000 clients annually.
