FROM THE ARTS CENTER Dear Performing Arts Lover, There is nothing quite so thrilling as seeing your favorite character or story come to life on stage before your very eyes - such is the magic of theatre! I am pleased to share my excitement about the upcoming season with you, full of award-winning artists bringing drama, music, dance, comedy, and a bit of spectacle to Southern Colorado. This season’s programming explores topics which speak of tragedy, hope, faith, struggle, friendship, and ambition. The human condition is displayed in full and the audience is sure to feel a panoply of emotion. As Oscar Wilde said, “I regard the theatre as the greatest of all art forms, the most immediate way in which a human being can share with another the sense of what it is to be a human being.” At the heart of our performing arts series’ success is its devoted base of season ticket holders. If you are not already a season ticket holder, I hope you will consider a package this season. A subscription guarantees priority seating to great performances, supports the theatre, and gives you the best possible pricing on tickets. No matter which type of performance you prefer, one thing is certain - you can count on being inspired this season! Here’s to a great season,

[DAVID PAYNE IN]

AN EVENING WITH C.S. LEWIS

SUNDAY, OCTOBER 13, 2019 AT 2:00 PM The year is 1963 and C.S. Lewis, the famous British author, is hosting a group of American writers at his home near Oxford. They are about to experience a captivating evening with a man whose engaging conversation and spontaneous humor made him one of the great raconteurs of his day. Seated in his living room he recalls the people and events that shaped his life; his friendship with J.R.R. Tolkien; why he nearly abandoned the Narnia Chronicles; and more. Described by critics as ‘Extraordinary!’, and ‘A Must See!’, An Evening with C.S. Lewis has proved again and again to be an enthralling theatrical experience and one which has led many thousands to discover (or rediscover) the continuing impact of a man who died over 50 years ago and whose collected works made him one of the literary giants of the 20th Century.

The ensemble’s mission is the belief that music can be an important vehicle for change, one that transcends racial, tribal, religious, gender, and economic boundaries.

PIANO BATTLE

MONDAY, FEBRUARY 3, 2020 AT 7:30 PM The brainchild of internationally-accomplished pianists Andreas Kern and Paul Cibis, Piano Battle sees the duo go head-to-head on stage, charming and enchanting the audience with a variety of classical pieces. The two artists, with distinctly different performance styles, take turns to perform pieces by composers such as Chopin, Liszt and Debussy. They will even improvise based on the tunes you request. Part serious classical recital, part tongue-in-cheek performance by two classy pianists, the Piano Battle is a unique concert that pleases both the ear and the eye. Whether or not they are friends in real life, mercy is the last thing on their mind when fighting on stage. Winning the audience‘s heart is the only thing that counts!

[AQUILA THEATRE IN]

GEORGE ORWELL’S 1984

SUNDAY, MARCH 15, 2020 AT 4:00 PM As our modern world grapples with the threats and benefits of technological integration, Aquila Theatre’s production of 1984, adapted by Michael Gene Sullivan, provides a space to appreciate the value of individual thought – an evocative and timely narrative of personal freedom against political repression. Today, Orwell’s prescient story resonates around the globe as individuals, systems, and governments clash. 1984 is a classic by one of literature’s most significant authors and provides the kind of evocative and innovative storytelling that suits Aquila’s bold, ensemble driven, physical style.

REGIONAL SERIES

“Though at its foundation “The Laramie Project” was born from tragedy, it has become a beacon of light, hope and honor.” — Encore Magazine

THE LARAMIE PROJECT [BY SPRINGS ENSEMBLE THEATRE]

SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 7, 2019 AT 7:30 PM In 1998, a 21-year-old student at the University of Wyoming was kidnapped, beaten, tied to a fence and left to die outside Laramie, Wyoming. His name was Matthew Shepard, and he was the victim of this assault because he was gay. Moisés Kaufman and fellow members of the Tectonic Theater Project visited Laramie in the aftermath of the beating and during the trial of the two young men accused of killing Shepard. They conducted more than 200 interviews with the people of the town to create this docudrama. The Laramie Project is a breathtaking collage that explores the depths to which humanity can sink and the heights of compassion of which we are capable. This moving production is performed by Springs Ensemble Theatre (SET), whose mission is to produce intimate, live theatre in collaboration with artists throughout the Colorado Springs area. By telling diverse stories on stage, SET explore problems and choices central to the human condition.
