In Dvorˇ ák’s hands, the timeless fairy tale of a mermaid, who trades her voice for love, is rendered in a powerful, otherworldly fable—a drama of shadowy depths, fervent love songs and endings that may not be what they seem. Set in London during WWII, this updated production of Handel’s insightful opera brings a poignant perspective to a veteran who overcomes the lasting effects of war with the help of friends.
