T i p o f t h e M o r n i n !

What's stress got to do with it? If you decided to be a risk-taker and made a "big life decision" (as discussed in the last issue) then you're probably freaking out. Either about income, food, shelter... you know, life's basic needs. Even if you have a place to live with a paycheck and some hot pockets, you most likely have the average amount of stress affecting your mind and body. Because stress is so common and can be damaging let's compile a short list of destress tactics, shall we? 1) Take deep breaths 2) Discuss your problems with someone older 3) Map out what you have and what you need 4) Consult Resources 5) Realize that it will be okay and now is the time to make the first move. And make it a smart one. Doing these kinds of things to help reduce stress will do just that because you can relax and think clearly. Numbers 2 and 4 help you learn more so that an educated decision can be made instead of a rash one (that would lead to more problems). Stress is almost always present but in order to get out alive we've got to prepare ourselves with healthy, positive coping methods. Borrow these or create your own to tackle issues head on and solve the problem. Good luck!

People will only take your advice when they ask for it. Words of wisdom I’ll never forget from someone while I was at the mall skipping my 11th grade physics class. Although this statement is very, very true, I’m hoping that since I’m speaking in general terms and not personally attacking you these “tips” will feel less threatening and enable you to reflect on yourself. Working on "who you are" and "who you want to be" is a life long process but we can't wait until we're dead!

Whenfeelingoverwhelmed,WRITE! Thisisanotherexcellentwaytohandle stress; so excellent that it gets its own paragraph. Of course this tip wouldcomefromanarticleinamagazine, butifeelit'svalidnevertheless. Personally, I am a firm believer in free writing because I occasionallyusethisarticletoexpressmyselfandmyfeelingsandthoughts. Also, a couple years back I conducted a writing and reading program for inmates and it proved to be quite helpful for self-reflection and pos sible future changes in one's self. Not only do you feel better after yougetallyourfeelingsandemotionsoutofyourhead, buthavingwritten them you can read over all the nonsense and fill the holes. Lots of times we feel so many things at once that they don't make sense. Having the luxury of seeing it all in front of you can make it clear what is realandwhatisplainolsilly. Afteryoure-readwhatyouwroteyou'll understandthesituationbetterandmakeanactualdecisionabouthowyou want to feel and act. With a plan in motion you will be able to navigate the outcome in your favor. For example, if you are emotional about a friend and you write in a journal realizing that every word is petty and selfish it will be a lot easier for you to apologize or bring up important issues which can then be resolved sooner. Then life will be back to "normal" and you can leave the Ibuprofen on the shelf.
