SPECIAL

WORDS The Game of Life We sometimes hear people refer to the “Game Life”. When one thinks of a “game” one thinks winning a challenge, maybe an exciting moment, adrenaline rush and maybe if one loses, depression or

of of an ire.

We all address this game with different attitudes and special skills. Some skills we learn in our daily exchanges with others, sometimes at home and sometimes in school situations. But, life is not a GAME, it is serious business, and we only have one chance at it. One thing I learned early and that was that I should enjoy life and as Monty Python sings “Always Look on The Bright Side of Life”. We all encounter dark moments, moments of tension, loss, and depression, but if one stops to reflect and focus on the bright things in life, one can confront that dark side and return to enjoying life. The time we have to share our love and caring with those we adore and respect needs to be cherished, and this should keep us happy. We can settle daily headaches and move on, but keeping a positive attitude is very important and takes some work.

Dr. Charles Richard Lyndaker, Ph.D. Headmaster

As you graduate from High School, you WILL encounter new headaches that you will cure in time, but keeping that positive attitude and cherishing the bright side of life is what will keep you going. Don’t ever give up!

It is important, dear students, boys and girls, that sports remain a game! Only by remaining a game will it do good for the body and spirit. And as sportsmen, I invite you not only to play, like you already do, but there is something more: challenge yourself in the game of life like you are in the game of sports. Challenge yourself in the quest for good, in both Church and society, without fear, with courage and enthusiasm. Get involved with others and with God; Don’t settle for a mediocre “tie”, give it your best, spend your life on what really matters and lasts forever. Don’t settle for lukewarm lives, “mediocre even-scored” lives: no, no! Go forward, seek victory, always! I also hope you can taste the beauty of teamwork, which is so important in life. No individualism! No to playing for yourselves, when a player does this, we say: “This guy wants to hog the ball all by himself!”. No, this is individualism: don’t devour the ball, be team players. To belong to a sports club means to reject every form of selfishness and isolation, it is an opportunity to encounter and be with others, to help one another, to compete in mutual esteem and to grow in brotherhood. I recommend that everyone get to play, not just the best, but everyone, with the advantages and the limitations that each has, indeed, focusing on the disadvantaged, as Jesus did. And I encourage you to carry on with your commitment through sports for children from the outskirts of cities; in addition to footballs, you can give them reasons for hope and trust. Always remember these three paths: school, sports and job opportunities. Seek this always. And I assure that this road won’t lead to drug or alcohol dependencies and other vices. I invoke upon you an abundant outpouring of the Holy Spirit. May he by his gifts sustain you on your journey and make you joyful and courageous witnesses of the Risen Jesus. I bless you and pray for you, and I ask you to pray for me, because I too play in my own game, which is your game, it is the game of the whole Church! Pray for me that I can play this game until the day the Lord calls me to himself. God bless! Msgr Dr. André Sampaio de Oliveira School Chaplain 1

Board Members DID YOU KNOW? The Our Lady of Mercy School is run by the Society of Our Lady of Mercy, which is a non-profit organization under the Archdiocese of Rio de Janeiro authority. Its members volunteer their time and knowledge to help the Society, the Parish and the School. The Society grew out of the desire of a few English-speaking Catholics, who wished to have a community where they could attend Mass in English. Their desire was fulfilled in 1919, when the Society was founded. After nearly 30 years, the Society decided to add a school for young children to the Parish. In March of 1952, the first Kindergarten class was opened in a house on Visconde de Caravelas Street and in May of 1953, a temporary wooden chapel was completed. AND THEN THE BOARDS WERE CREATED!

There are 2 Boards involved in running the school: Board of Directors and Board of Education, and they consist of a President, a Vice President, a Secretary and its elected concilors. The Boards are composed by Society members, who appoint the Headmaster and the Administrative Director, helping the school achieve excellence in education, while staying focused on the School mission. The Board of Directors is responsible for strategic plans and supervision of the school’s administration. The Board of Education is responsible for the educational and sports-related vision of the school. For more information on the Society please visit www.olmrio.com

Everyone wants to feel like they have control of their lives. If you lose a game, you play a new one hoping for a better outcome. However, the truth is that, in life, all of our choices matter. All of them have an impact on our path and how we will develop as people. It is not about winning or losing, but being conscious that our decisions affect others. This is why the games we play have such an essential role in preparing us for the many challenges we’ll face in life. Different types of games teach us different skill sets. Some games, such as hopscotch and memory games, help our brains develop from a very early age, even if they seem silly at first. Others teach us how to play by the rules, preparing us for the many norms we’ll have to follow in our lives. This also helps us adapt to different situations and environments, preparing us for challenges we might face. Last but not least, other games, such as group sports, help us work with others and grow as a team. These games show us that we should always take the whole team into consideration, also helping us realize that choosing to ignore teammates to do our own thing can sometimes lead us to failure. We learn that we cannot be selfish, always trying to think of ourselves as part of something bigger that needs teamwork in order to succeed.

At OLM, that is exactly what we learn. We learn that we are all one big team, one that works together to make our school the place it is: our second home. From students to staff, we all cooperate to make our school work and to keep improving it. As students, OLM prepares us for the world we’ll face and the people we’ll meet, always teaching us the value of teamwork, how we should take others into account, and how we should always strive to help people and to be better versions of ourselves with each passing day. That is why the 2018 Yearbook Staff chose this year’s theme: to represent the importance of teamwork and the other lessons we learn through the games that we play at school and in our lives. At OLM, everything we do, from activities in our Preschool classrooms to training with our coaches in High School, shows us that it’s never about winning or losing. It is actually about realizing that there is nothing better than learning from your surroundings and working together with other players so that every person can succeed.

DEDICATION This year’s yearbook dedication goes to someone extremely special and loved by all. With her huge smile and never-ending joy, this person is one who’s been with us for the last few years, always available to offer guidance and advice for whatever we might need. She’s agitated, enthusiastic, and has laptops in class and laziness as her worst enemies. “What I mean is”, the Class of 2018 is honored to dedicate this yearbook to Ms. Kátia Souza, a person who not only is a perfect representation of the school’s spirit, but also a person who marked our years at OLM. Even though we only got to know her a couple of years ago, she has been in OLM for as long as we are alive (literally). There isn’t one person that knows her that does not like her or is not affected by her contagious smile. During our years together, she taught us the true importance of always offering a helping hand and having a kind heart, which is something she always did with us.

It all started when we entered High School and suddenly had the obligation of completing 100 hours of community service. Ms. Souza would always come around asking us to fill out our “fichinhas” and was sending out invitations for us to participate in the next “Estenda Sua Mão Project”. We would go to religion class dreading school and stressing over our theses and she would always have the right words to ease out all the tension. One day she would show us videos about different religions around the world and on others she would come in asking for our advice. In the end, our relationship with her goes beyond that of teacher and students. We see her as a mentor and role model, and even though we are saying goodbye to OLM, we’re sure Ms. Souza will keep on putting smiles on people’s faces and amazing everyone with her huge heart! Sincerely, Class of 2018

Bernardo Tenório Benchimol Del Campo Feinstein Joined OLM in: 2003 Nickname: Be, (F)Einstein, Bezinho Famous for: Being a genius, putting unnecessary spaces on text messages, having a 4.0 GPA Usually found: Iate club, with his girlfriend, not at class parties Most likely to: Miss class reunions, become rich, become a genius scientist Pet peeve: Portuguese, B/B+, Ana Bia, noisy people, essays, dumb questions Pet expression: “Hue”, “Lesk”, “Gaxtou”, “Sou lindo”

Once upon a time some weird stuff happened. 9 months later I was born. I don’t remember much about those days, but legend has it that my Mom & Dad couldn’t stop staring at my newborn wrinkled and potato-y face. Fortunately, since that day they never ceased to look over me, always taking care of me, and loving me much more than I deserved. Mom & Dad: you are my greatest teachers and biggest fans, and I know that you’ll always be there for me, no matter what. Besides my parents, the only people that love me as much are my sisters, Caká & Soso. Interestingly, they are also the ones that hate me the most (I can be amazingly annoying); so, thanks for keeping up with me big sis & lil’ sis ;) Now, to Rafa (my perfect and beautiful bff/girlfriend that will own a piece of my heart for all eternity), Brownie, Titio, and the rest of my family, I can only say thank you for helping shape me into the person I am today. Needless to say, however, that I wouldn’t be whole without the influence of my beloved (sometimes despised) school: OLM. It was at OLM that I developed my intellectual self, learning everything from amazing teachers that succeed in making the school a fun place to be (usually, at least). Forever will I remember the awful/funny teacher jokes, hilarious life stories, and faces (or noises) some teachers can make when the class is not behaving properly. Yet, it is obvious that school wouldn’t feel like my second home if it weren’t for my friends, peeps, peers, bros etc. Without them I wouldn’t have the best laughs of my life, pointless/comical discussions, a thousand useless WhatsApp groups, hours of videogame play, amazing trips and sleepovers, or the countless (and priceless) memories from “rolezinhos” around the city. I met these incredibly different people throughout the years, and each and every one of them left their mark in me in one way or another. I would also like to thank my nonOLM friends for appearing (and reappearing) in my high school life, which definitely wouldn’t be complete without them. Years from now, when I’m old and wrinkly, I will recall the moments spent with you all with a smile in my face and an untranslatable feeling in my heart: saudades. Obrigado a todos por existirem na minha vida!

I entered OLM thinking about my old school, feeling completely alienated in front of all those unfamiliar faces. As time passed, you learn the customs of people around you and you don’t even realize that you are in a new place. It was like that with OLM, the beginning is always difficult, but eventually you make new friends and start to feel like home. Thank you ě—„ë§ˆ & ě•„ëš for putting me in such an amazing school. I couldn’t ask for better parents than you guys, thank you for always being there and always helping me with my life choices, 삏랑해♼. The end of a journey approaches. Even though many more are yet to come, now is the time to think back, reflect on the good and bad, and, above all, appreciate everyone who has made my situation possible. In no particular order, I first thank my mother for always being there for me, helping through the hard times and giving me a much needed push to achieve my potential. She always believed in me and never failed to be kind and loving. I thank my father, who, although capable of being hard on me, always provided the peace and fun a kid needs to develop. He played with me and my sister despite working hard in his job and introduced me to passions I’ll take with me for the rest of my life. To finalize my core family, thank you sis, because you were always the one to understand my points when mom and dad didn’t. You always helped me with school when Math got too complicated for them and, even though we fight a lot, growing up would’ve been empty without you. I can’t forget about my grandparents, on my mother’s side, who took care of me when my two morning working parents had to work. You two helped shape me with all your love. Finally, I have to thank all of my friends, especially the ones from school, whether or not you’re graduating with us this year. It was because of you that school became a whole lot more bearable. With all of you, I learned much more than school intended to teach me. I am not very good with people, but living eight hours per day, five days a week with all of you has given me the capacity to talk to types of people that, in other schools, I probably would have never talked to. School might have given me as much knowledge as it has, but without the social skills I learned from all of you, that knowledge would be useless. What OLM gave me, the class of 2018 taught me how to use in the real world. Through fights and disagreements, as well as laughter and parties, you guys became a lot more than just a class. Although I don’t have the space to thank each of you individually, I couldn’t be more happy to graduate with my second family. I swear that I’ll make you and my real family proud. You guys deserve it. Thank you. 1

Class of 2018: I have nothing but outstanding things to say about you amazing people! Having joined OLM in the middle of my junior year, I was reasonably worried about integrating into a group that has likely known each other for over half a decade and thought it would be a difficult task. Fortunately, I was tremendously wrong! You have welcomed me amongst you with a level of sympathy, friendliness and good will I could not have previously expected or imagined! You have shown great care and attention in both and bad times, something I will remember and be grateful for. Thank you all for being such exemplary peers! OLM Faculty: My high school experience would not have been as nice as it was if it weren’t for the faculty members. You guys have truly gone beyond your line of duty with the experiences you have provided me with. Dr. Alves’ excellent thesis advising and Mr. Rucker’s very peculiar life lessons are just some examples of what I have gained as a result of spending time with you. Thank you all so much for making my time at OLM fruitful beyond expectations.

OLM has become my second home, ever since I entered the school, and saying goodbye to a place you love is always hard. The years spent here were incredible and they shaped me into who I am today. Outside of school, the support I had was even greater. Você é a melhor irmã possível. Boa sorte no resto dessa etapa e saiba que você pode contar comigo pra qualquer coisa. E pra minha Família, vocês são todos muito importantes para mim! Estar com vocês é sempre um prazer enorme! Muito obrigado por tudo! Todos as comemorações, lanches e almoços que passamos juntos sempre terão um lugar reservado no meu coração.” All of this would not be possible without my class, 2018. You guys are the funniest most amazing class to have studied in this school. Every day was made bearable because they were spent with the best company you could have. Every class was filled with lively discussions, funny comments and it created this bond between us all that is unbreakable. These moments shared turned our relationship as a class into something much greater. Whether it was laughing at the jokes, stressing out over tests and thesis, complaining about Bodytech, finishing projects at the last minute or getting excited over the “gorjões de frango”, I couldn’t say I would be happier doing this with anyone else. You have helped me grow so much in these years spent together. Thank you so much for making these memories that will last a lifetime, and helping me overcome whatever difficulties I have encountered. Good luck for all of you in your respective paths, even though you don’t need it because I know you will all succeed.

After 14 years of OLM, I wasn’t really sure of how to start saying goodbye. The only thing I was sure about is that I wanted all the people who shaped me the most in these last 14 years to know how grateful I am to them. So here is my thank you. First of all, I thank the three people who have been the most important ones in my life. Mamãe & Papai, you two are everything to me. Your warm hugs, sweet smiles and unconditional love have shaped me into the person I am today, and I could never thank you enough for that. I am so lucky to have the best parents in the world, and I know I can count on you for anything at any time. Know in your hearts that I will love you forever and that I will always do my best to make you proud! To my brother, I start off by saying that you probably have no idea of how much I love and am thankful for you! You were definitely my first friend, and one I’m sure I’ll have forever. You’re absolutely brilliant, and trust me, you can do any and every thing that you put your mind to. Be sure that you’ll always have me for whatever you need! And just as I thank my family, one of the most sincere and important thank you’s goes to another one. 2018, I have no words to describe what you are to me. I’m 100% sure that, because of you, my life at OLM, one of the most important and meaningful parts of my life, will also be one of the most special. Through all our ups and downs, you guys always had the power of cheering me up and making me laugh. You never fail to make me proud of being part of the 2018 family, and for the last 14 years of my life this class is what makes each and every school day brighter, lighter and more fun. You are a huge part of who I am, and one I will carry with me forever. I know we complain about school, but I’m also absolutely sure that these are the days we’ll miss the most. I’ll miss our inside jokes, the way we always try to get things our way, laughing until our stomachs hurt, and our crazy ideas, but, most of all, I’ll just miss having us together every day. I know this is a time that usually makes us gloomy, but be sure that this is not goodbye; actually, it’s just a “see you soon”. To all of my families and to all of OLM, I thank God every day for having you by my side.

I would like to dedicate this space to thank those who have gotten me this far and who have prepared me for what is yet to come. First, and most importantly, my family, who were always supportive, or at least permissive, of every professional decision I made and provided me with opportunities and resources that no doubt will help me achieve my goals. My parents always loved and cared for me, which is something that I can never repay, but will always strive to reciprocate. They have helped me shape my ambitions and character, making me the person that I am today. Also, they were the ones who led me to pursue the career that I now desire. My sister, who has helped me grow intellectually and emotionally, and showed me the importance of being responsible and kind to others. Second, my teachers, who have provided me with the knowledge and perspectives, without which I wouldn’t be able to evolve personally and professionally. Mr. Zsoltz, probably the best math teacher that I have ever had, was the one who incited my passion for the sciences, as well as changed my perspective on the subject completely. Mr. Alves, who is someone with whom I truly identify personally and admire professionally, has helped me immensely with my thesis and has encouraged my passion for coding, even though his choice for programming language does not coincide with mine. Third, my friends, who were always very supportive of me and helped me constrain my social anxiety. They always cheered me up and distracted me when things weren’t going well at home or at school. They helped me control a fear that I struggled with for years. Finally, I want to give special thanks to one of the nicest people that anyone will ever meet, Gabriel Braga. He was the one who gave me a hand when I most needed. When I felt like there was nowhere to go, he helped me ground myself and reverse my perspective on life completely. Mr. Braga showed me what I could aspire to be in the future and drove me to keep going, as he would continue to do for the next five years of my academic life. Without him, I most certainly wouldn’t be where I am. 2

OLM is much more than a school, it is our second home. My years here were, undeniably, the best. Since getting here during 8th grade, I grew as a better person and met amazing people that I will always have in my heart. Love you. Grael, I never thought I would meet someone who would impact my life like you do. I want to thank you for all our endless talks, looks of death during boring classes, buzzfeed quizzes, and simply for being there when I need the most. You are not my best friend, you are my soul sister. Selma, you were one of the first people to talk to me when I arrived at school. At that time, I could not even imagine how important you would become for me. We do almost everything together and I know I can always count with you. Be, you are so annoying and still one of the best people in the school. Thank you for being one of my best friends, making me laugh, and just being there for me. Mari, “Minha frôzinha” You are such a special person! Always supporting me and keeping up with my craziness. Can’t wait to have a place to stay in England. Teachers, I want to thank you from the bottom of my heart for all those years, for having the patience to teach us, giving us boring and exhausting tests, and being a friend when we need. You gave us the most powerful thing in the world: Knowledge. Class of ‘18, Simply the best family ever. Thank you for all the amazing years and fun memories that I will always carry with me. You, guys, are amazing, and I wish you all the most wonderful things in the world. 2

Mariana Esteves d´Annunciação Joined OLM in: 2002 Nickname: Mari, Globo Famous for: Being accepted to King’s College, being artsy, her cupcakes, never paying attention to physics classes, being extremely organized Usually found: At “cursinho”, summer programs, volleyball practice, at windsurf lessons, doodling Most likely to: Become a doctor, live in Europe, become a graphic designer Pet peeve: Gabriella, Portuguese class, disorganized stuff, grammar mistakes Pet expression: “Olha, eu posso tentar...”, “Para Gabriella, eu vou te matar”, “coisa do Yearbook”, “Eu odeio vocês por terem me levado pra AP Spanish”

The future is defined by the past, that much has been clear to me. Our brains are wired to think of past experiences before making a new decision. In respect to that, it is incredible how much a place can shape who you become. After spending 16 years at OLM, it would be impossible for me not to have been influenced by all that I witnessed. As I prepare myself to the next step, I hope that OLM becomes the beacon of safety I can always return to, even if only in my mind. It would be preposterous for me to speak of my experience in OLM without speaking of the people whom most of my life has been centered around. The Class of 2018 is more than just a group of students. We are a family, albeit a weird and slightly-dysfunctional-at-times one. As every family, we have our defects and our mannerisms, and those things only we understand. Just as a family, despite our differences, we have the comfort of knowing someone has your back. Sometimes I wonder just how a collection of such diverse personalities could stand each other 8 hours a day, 5 days a week. In truth, sometimes we don’t, but that is also part of being a family. Of course, 2018 is not the only family that has influenced my future. The OLM community is a family of its own, and it embraces all and tries its best to adapt to every member. Without such a fluid support body, our experience at this school would have been very different. While we tend to complain more than to appreciate, there is a lot we have to thank OLM for. I, for one, could not have accomplished what I have without the help of the teachers, students, and staff I have encountered on my way here. There are others who must be taken into consideration as well. To those whose time has yet to come, I hope OLM provides to all your needs. To the teachers who have accompanied us on this journey, I thank you all for your influence and insight. To my parents, I hope I have made you proud, and thank you for your support. To my friends outside of OLM, thank you for helping me find who I want to be. And, of course, to the Class of 2018: I will never forget the memories, good and bad, and I hope each of you finds what drives you, and pursues it. 2

Selma Sarah Dantas Sabra Joined OLM in: 2003 Nickname: Selminha, Selmão, Sabra, Sabrazinha Famous for: Having her whole life planned out, being a very good student, crying for a grade when she got an A, always getting really excited about English books and plays Usually found: Manekineko, studying, home with her family Most likely to: Become a doctor, find the cure for cancer, have three children Pet peeve: calling her “Selmão”, Portuguese, receiving any grade below A Pet expression: “que top”, “Mr. podia ser um A+” , “tadinhoooooo”

When I was three years old, my parents enrolled me at OLM. At the time, I did not know what was expecting me in this new place that would soon become a second home to me or had any idea of the friendships I would make that would last many years to come. But this was exactly what happened. The OLM community embraced me, and I embraced it back. I developed relationships with several groups of people who made the fifteen years I spent at this school seem to pass by in the blink of an eye. Every day when I walk into the school, for example, the doormen welcome me. As I make my way to my locker, teachers and other staff members reach out to me to wish me a good day. When I reach my locker, my friends and classmates are all around the hallway, greeting each other and myself, asking how the other person’s day went. For these reasons, I cannot think of myself going to any other school. I know most schools are too big and end up not having space for these relationships to form. And I know that sometimes OLM can feel as if it is too small to do everything we want to do. But, in truth, it is the perfect size. It allows us to be who we are and plays a big role in forming students with character and determination. Therefore, I would like to thank the people who make this school be the wonderful institution that it is and a place I want to come back to every day. I would like to thank my parents, who were the ones who enrolled me at this school and helped me overcome any difficulties I encountered along the way, always reminding me to stay true to myself and reach for the stars. I would like to thank my siblings, who made me laugh whenever I wanted to cry and always supported me no matter the circumstance. I would like to thank my grandparents, who cheered me on for every accomplishment I ever achieved. I would like to thank my closest friends, who were always there to lighten the mood and made me smile through hard times. Finally, I would like to thank the class of 2018, which with every person and their individual traits has been able to make my days even better. May the future bring us all great success! 3

OLM has provided moments that will be unforgettable for the rest of our lives. More than a center of education, OLM is a community which allows students to find their place as citizens and build a character. Being a part of this would never be possible if it wasn’t for the full support of my mother. She has guided and advised me through all these years. I couldn’t have asked for such an amazing mother. I would also like to thank my dad for all he has done for us. He is the strongest person I know, and my greatest role model. Despite our problems, I am extremely grateful for having Nick as my brother. We know we can always count on each other when it comes to pairing up against others. My sister, Trine, is that person who I can talk to about anything. She is my safe haven. My grandmother has always been one of my favorite people. She has always encouraged and helped me to be able to follow my dream of studying abroad; a dream that would never have been developed without the influence of the school. I believe, however, that the greatest treasure OLM has provided me is the opportunity to meet extraordinary people that I will never forget. Lais is the living proof that completely distinct personalities might bring people together. She has an eccentric personality that brings joy and fun to our daily lives. I could not talk about true friendship without mentioning my best friend and partner in crime, Bernardo. He is one of the people who I trust the most, and my go-to whenever any problem pops up in my life. Mariana is that friend who will always help when we need the most. She might have entered our group recently, but I know that she has come to stay in our hearts forever. Selma has been one of my closest friends since my first days in school. You are definitely the person who I have more memories with. Talking about memories, being a part of the Class of 2018 turned this period of time even more special. I believe we were able to leave a deep impression in the school. Deeper than the wall we painted and all the spirit weeks we “won”. More than a class, we became a family. I will miss every single one of you. Love you with all my heart <3.

National High School Model United Nations (NHSMUN) in New York was a refreshing experience. The process began in the classroom, where we wrote our position papers on our topic. The research took months of diligent work, but paid off when we started the committee sessions. The conferences finally began Wednesday at night, after the opening ceremony. MUN follows a system of debate very similar to the United Nations. The chairs are always there to guide the delegates and are usually college students. The debate itself only begins when a country motions to open it. For all motions and voting procedures delegates must raise their placard with their country name and can only motion when the chair calls upon their country. The two main types of motions are moderated caucus, a formal debate format, and unmoderated caucus, an informal debate format. The goal of the conference is to form resolutions, or solutions sponsored by countries to solve the problem at hand. Although the conferences were tiring, as we are usually in committee for at least three hours before a break, the time was well spent. By the end we passed thorough and effective resolutions to address the issues. It was a great learning experience!

Marina Koria (´20)

Knowledge Bowl is a general knowledge competition where two teams of four players are supposed to buzz in to answer each question (the team who buzzes in faster, has the opportunity to answer said question). The nervousness we experienced at first led to our first defeat, but that didn’t stop us. Throughout the competition, we won 5 games, making us pass to the semi-finals against Graded, which we won! Everyone in our team was very excited about playing OLM’s first Knowledge Bowl Final ever. In the end, we played as best as we could, getting second place.

Dulce Silveira joined the OLM community in 1991 as a mother, becoming part of the OLM Staff months later. Having held many positions at OLM, including Elementary Supervisor, Guidance Counselor, and High School Teacher, Ms. Silveira has been a key participant in several of our school’s programs and events, among them the Family Life Program, the Wellness Program, the International Festival, and courses such as Meditation. After almost 27 years at OLM, Dulce is leaving her “second home”, as she herself puts it, for Petrópolis with her family, where she will be working as the Superintendent of a bilingual school that teaches preschool to fifth grade.

Having entered the school as a Senior Kinder student in 1991 and later graduating from OLM, Gabriel Braga came back as part of the Staff in 2013 after his time abroad. Mr. Braga worked as the Middle School Guidance Counselor, working with the students, parents, and staff on a daily basis to make sure that OLM continues to be a comfortable, healthy, and safe learning environment for everyone. He is moving to Petrópolis with his family, where he plans to start a post-grad course in humanistic psychology.

The Annual International Festival is an opportunity for our community to come together to celebrate different cultures and diversity.

This year’s theme was EMBRACE. Cåritas, an institute which embraces refugees upon their arrival in Brazil, held a booth at the Festival.

In addition to the booths from many countries and a workshop of African doll-making, we had performances by our students, such as Capoeira, Parade of typical costumes and Brazilian folklore dance.

A huge thank-you to all parents and students! Marina Vanderput Elementary School Principal

Elementary & Middle School students had the opportunity to show how the world and humans coexist, pointing out our responsibility in protecting this relationship. Projects included current issues like climate change, pollution, threatened species, solving crimes, and human health. It was a blast! Dr. Mendes & Ms. Gresh
