Clare Rojas “Egret” Visual artist Clare Rojas also works as folk-country singer Peggy Honeywell. In both mediums, her goal is to pare down themes to their purest essence. Not easy. She likens the process to a child’s first time jumping off a high dive, aka “bouncing courage out.” Rojas is definitely making a splash with this colorful body of work, which evokes natural yet abstract forms. The exhibition features more than 100 new pieces, including this pair of Untitled gouaches on paper. 219 N. Elizabeth Street; 312-496-3552. Thursday–Saturday: 11AM–5PM; by appointment.

“Otobong Nkanga: To Dig A Hole That Collapses Again” Otobong Nkanga’s first North American museum survey is beautiful but serious. The title, alluding to destroyed landscape, is borrowed from the translated name of a Namibian town dominated by mines. Here, it has inspired her sculpture reflecting on the effects of capitalism. Tapestries and other pieces depict fragmented human forms, violence, and disaster. The site-specific Anamnesis is closer to home. Nkanga constructed a crevice in the shape of a meandering stream, then filled it with spices most commonly imported to Chicago—cardamom, cinnamon, and cumin. Their scent permeates the gallery. 220 E. Chicago Avenue; 312-280-2660. Tuesday and Friday: 10AM–9PM; Wednesday, Thursday, and Sunday: 10AM–5PM. Closed Monday.
