Forming the third building of a 3 building First Phase of a broader masterplan for a media campus, this building was to house the required minimum parking numbers prescribed for the first phase in the masterplan as well as the generator compounds and supporting infrastructure for the back-up generators required to provide full resilience to the media campus’ production. The result is shaped by the tight geometric constraints of the unusual site shape as well as the strict parameters for the layout of the generator kit. The building negotiates a dramatic grade change, a public/private realm split, as well as provides ecological corridor connections through green roof/green wall components as well as being a naturally ventilated car park structure.

Parkdale. Strategic Infrastructures

Parkdale is a neighbourhood in Toronto that has been victim to the fallout of a series of planning moves throughout the city’s history. The construction of railways and freeways severed the area from both the amenity of the lake as well as from the rest of the city and many of its services. This and the closure of several mental health facilities in the area and the abandonment of their patients has led to low property values and in many cases, the creation of substandard and often illegal living situations.

2

3

Due to the low property values, the area also posses a large quantity of mid to late 20th Century high density towers and is the home to many newly landed immigrant groups. However, because of increasing condo development/ gentrification, Parkdale is now under the strain of the complex tensions created by future development. retail frontage

infrastructural barriers

This master-plan proposes the strategic occupation of potential sites by couplings of mixed income housing and social/ecological infrastructural amenities. These pairings create nodes within the reconnected network at 5 specific sites. By taking advantage of rising land values generated by encroaching gentrification, the plan can allow for the continued growth and development to the benefit of all.

Half graphic novel and half promotional material, this narrative tries to negotiate the territory in design between the leftist critique of spectacle in contemporary global corporatism and the value of experience and phenomenology possible in aesthetic culture. Rather than take a position or a bifurcated view of the issues the simultaneity that exists within the act of design is explored in its own messiness.
