Tiles in San Diego: Simple Tiling Methodology for the DIY Enthusiast, PART 1 “This two part article series provides tips and advice on how to choose tiles and then lay your own tile flooring.” Does your bathroom make you feel like you are bathing in a giant peach? Or perhaps it fell victim to a now retired yet once stylish interior decorator who felt that animal brown was a refreshing color for your master bath. Well, never fear. If you are an enthusiastic do-it-yourselfer (DIY), you could have your bathroom beautifully fitted with the best tiles in San Diego in no time at all!

San Diego Tiling: How to Rejuvenate Your Floors and Walls Before you begin your DIY odyssey, you need to make sure you have the required tools you need to lay your new tiles: 1. A good tile cutter 2. Tile saw 3. Spirit level (Important for getting things even and level!) 4. A good set of knee pads (You’ll be spending a lot of time on your knees during this process, and comfort is important.) 5. Grout spreader 6. Tile adhesive 7. Adhesive Spreader 8. Tile-Cutting jig 9. A measuring stick of appropriate length and thickness.

Selecting the right Tiles: Where to start? The next step is to select the right tiles for your particular project room. There are a number of factors to consider when making your selection:

1.

The size of the room: Small spaces do well with a lighter tile color choice, which creates the illusion that the room is bigger than it really is. Darker tiles look better in larger rooms, which can handle the ‘cramped’ effect darker tiles can create.

2. Texture or patterning: Would you like to incorporate a texture or patterning in the tiling design of your floor? Or, would you like to include one feature tile per group, which tells a story as you move around the room? With the sheer variety of tiles in San Diego, the options are limitless and the ultimate choice you make is largely a matter of personal taste. Do what’s right for your home, remembering that fads of the moment can quickly go out of style. 3. Natural look or ceramic San Diego tiles? Natural-looking slate and terracotta tiles give a very different vibe or feel to baked ceramics, which come in every color of the rainbow. Take in to account the style of the fittings you have or intend to install in your bathroom and make sure it all works together. 4. Budget: Be sure to select tiles that will allow you to complete your refurbishment within your allocated project budget. Make sure to do an accurate cubic measurement of your flooring and/or wall. Don’t forget to make a large allowance for inevitable breakages! Once you have selected your favorite San Diego tiling and gathered all the tools you’ll need, you’re ready to begin transforming your bathroom into the tranquil and refreshing space it should be. Stay tuned for Part Two of this installment, where we’ll give you a step by step guide on how to lay your choice in tiles quickly, easily and effectively. We’ll also give you tips on preparation, tile cutting, straight laying and grouting your new floor. It’s as easy as D, I, Y!
