A very warm welcome to the Autumn/Winter 2012 Sanderson Young bi-annual magazine

W

hilst the housing market remains broadly in a plateau, the year 2012 has been an exceptional one for British pride, joy and success. The Jubilee earlier in the year was an amazing worldwide example of how this country celebrates its monarchy and admires its tradition and, even through the adverse weather, the celebrations were a tremendous success. The stunning Olympic Games in the summer of 2012 brought further pride and our athletes excelled in a diverse range of activities, raising inspiration for the whole country. Many congratulations to Team GB, the organisers and the volunteers who displayed the true characteristics of our country so well. Dictating this, the morning after Europe won the Ryder Cup, one feels a further sense of pride that our union has been recognised for its ability to come back from adversity and win such an exciting golfing event. I am sure we all hope that the same outcome can take place for the current financial problems experienced in Europe, so that our economies can come back stronger. Pride in what we do and how we do it is a great characteristic to employ and one which we must focus upon if we are to bring or keep our individual businesses in profit. Our main focus at Sanderson Young is to highlight quality business rather than quantity business. A recent study of my company’s performance against other estate agents within the region highlighted the fact that, in the majority, agents had 50 per cent, or even double, the stock levels that my local branch would enjoy, yet my company had more houses ‘under offer’ and ‘sold’ as a percentage of that stock. I have always said that I am much more interested in seeing a Sanderson Young board with ‘sold’ on it, than a Sanderson Young board with ‘for sale’ on it. The same parallel exists with many businesses; turnover is vanity and profit is sanity. The ability to be positive is our second focus. It is vitally important that we remain positive with our clients and that we discuss options available to them

in order to resolve their housing problems. Pricing is undoubtedly the key issue, but not the only one, to discuss with our clients. The strength of our marketing and our brand highlight the features and benefits of a property and the exposure that the house enjoys over a strong regional, national and international marketplace, which is vital. The strength of the Sanderson Young website has been developed even further over the last 12 months, moving on from the initial App which can be downloaded onto iphones, into the mobile web; a quick easy and effective search engine which will be well suited to the future mobile technology and 4G broadband speeds which will roll out throughout Britain in the near future. 4G networks will give download speeds approximately 10 times the current speed of the current 3G network. This will lead to a far greater number of users on mobile devices and here at Sanderson Young we are already prepared for this, another sign of an agent being positive. Finally, I have seen many examples in the region of companies who are proactive and who are winning new business through their actions. My many congratulations go to Close House Hotel and Golf Club, where, over the late summer, not only did we enjoy fantastic golf on its stunning course, but we had a highly successful weekend of outdoor concerts – both Mamma Mia and Katherine Jenkins, which the organisers say will become part of a regular list of events in the North East and from which I am sure the hotel will continue to prosper. The expansion of Newcastle’s airport and the development of the new Emirates route, with a larger plane carrying more passengers and greater cargo, is a further success story within the North East. In the last year we have watched with pride as Nissan, in Sunderland, has reinvested in this region, turning job cuts into new jobs and a great new investment which looks set to continue in future years with the production of the Lithium-Ion batteries. This is one of our region’s most impressive success stories.

None of us really expect prices to move very far over the next 6-12 months and demand will be patchy, but, looking beyond this time, most economists see an ever brighter light at the end of the tunnel and a tremendous landscape of opportunity for significant growth. In many cases our residential lettings market has shown real signs of being undersupplied with new stock. There is an obvious shortage of new build houses becoming available within the region and analysts have been telling us for some time that the country’s housing stock will be significantly below required demand within two to three years. It makes sense if we are living longer that we will have a greater need for housing. In 2013 Sanderson Young is working with Cussins Homes in Alnwick to support the launch of their most inspiring new homes development, to be called The Limes at Swansfield Park. From this elevated site, overlooking the historic centre of Alnwick, Cussins Homes will create a magnificent contrast of local smaller and luxury family homes and it is sites like this that I hope will inspire great success for our clients. 2013 will continue to challenge all businesses, yet those who have pride in what they do, are proactive with policies and positive with their thoughts, will welcome the challenges ahead and, like our great sportsmen, will undoubtedly reap the reward of hard work in the future by taking action now. buildingthefuture The Government has recently announced a set of measures to boost house building, with the coalition recognising that not enough has been done to assist the construction sector hit hard during the recession. In a move to encourage development and boost the economy, proposals include the relaxation of rules regarding the need for planning permission, additional funding for affordable housing and assistance to first time buyers through the First Buy scheme. Recognition of the need to assist the house building sector is positive news for the industry, as developers need the backing of planning authorities to encourage growth. Recent land sales handled by Sanderson Young have received an excellent response and it is clear that schemes can be delivered successfully if developers work together with local authorities and

also with potential purchasers. Competition is high for quality sites and growth both in the housing sector and the economy will come from an increase in housing. This is supported by changes to the National Planning Policy Framework; designed to simplify the planning process and support sustainable development. We hope that these changes will create an increased collaboration and consultation with local communities, allowing developers to win support for schemes. already well supported by a number of Newcastle’s business people, ‘shakers and movers’, celebrity, media and sporting types. The ambience along with the food is always reliable and exciting. Those in search of more caffeine can often be seen returning in mid-afternoon when this vibrant corner building calms for the first time during the day and gives time to read a book, catch up with emails on its in house wifi and enjoy a relaxing cappuccino. The onset of the school bell brings a number of early homework and late parent pick up children who are killing time until their drive home. Rod Davies opens the doors for the second time to create a candlelit, informal yet cosy and very welcome, international tapas bar. Tropical rainstorms and local streets turning into rivers had caused the professionally fitted basement kitchen to flood on two occasions. The only answer was to create a new ground floor kitchen which after 4 months of refitting has finally opened. Rod explained ‘I am delighted that I now have a place which will no longer be exposed to the extremes of the weather we have suffered and also a kitchen supported by three

chefs, where we can produce an even greater variety of international dishes and a new firm favourite of chargrilled burgers and steaks. Our supplier The Meat Merchant of Jesmond is justifiably proud of their meats and we will be adding to these over many exciting weeks to come, with traditional as well as contemporary sauces, potatoes, fries and salads, which I know will become a signature of the building’. The candlelit tables transform the building from 5.30pm onwards with those keen for a bargain able to purchase three tapas dishes for only £9.95 before 6.30pm. The truly worldwide mix of dishes brings in flavoured foods from South America, Asia, as well as India and Europe to give a true mix of inspirational choice. The wine list has also been readjusted to create affordable wines available by the glass or bottle, with soft background music and black and white images of Laurel & Hardy on the plasma screen TV, adding to the already pleasant mix of colours, a vibrant fish tank and an active high street admired from every table.

The bistro buzz and the option to drink a couple of glasses of wine with small dishes of food has already proven very popular and there is no doubt that Rod and his team will do their very best to ensure this corner of the High Street provides a very welcome, vibrant and friendly destination for families, couples and singles looking for a pleasant night out.

Newcastle Falcons coach Dean Richards has all the credentials and the attitude attitude to lead the club back to great heights, as Alastair Gilmour discovers

P

erhaps his early career in the police force never allowed Dean Richards to play the bad guy as well as the goodie. It was a good grounding, though. The Newcastle Falcons coach is politeness itself, he’s elegantly mannered, he thinks before he speaks and certainly enjoys life’s finer attractions. He is quietly spoken, appears unflustered, is cultured and diplomatic. “Bombproof” would describe him fairly. That’s Good Cop, but when does Bad Cop surface?

Does he have dressing room “hairdrier” moments when everyone around him gets a verbal blasting? Probably, but the impression is that the Richards man-management style is closer to confidencebuilding and total support rather than tyrannical. He talks of “the boys” in his charge and though some of them look disarmingly youthful, it’s obvious he treats them on an equal footing, coaxing and coaching the best from them in character and athletic ability. Rugby is a game of character and Richards’ role is to develop that on an individual, team and club basis – and he is undoubtedly the man for the Falcons’ job, chosen by owner Semore Kurdi to stabilise the club

“The ultimate thing is to get promoted,” he says of the Falcons’ 2012-13 season. “Everything is geared towards that. after its fall from Premiership high society to the Championship’s scramble for promotion. Richards also talks about getting the Kingston Park outfit back into English rugby’s elite in whatever time it takes – but really his eye is on the one-season clock, as it is for every Falcons supporter. Typically, he has committed his – and his family’s – foreseeable future to Newcastle and the North East. “I knew a little bit about the North East before I came here,” he says. “I’d done my research. I fell in love with the area and I share Semore Kurdi’s vision. “The one thing that everybody told me though was that you only have to get out of Newcastle a little bit and the countryside and scenery are absolutely beautiful. Also, people in the North East are fantastic and helpful and very caring. “My family’s here, it took a little bit of convincing because if you’re settled in a place and the kids have gone to school there it always takes a bit of time to adjust, but they’re all adjusting.” Richards’ youngsters are at the age – one 19, two 14 and one 12 – where relaxing a grip on best friends and home security take quite a bit of persuasion. They must have seen something in the region that clinched the family decision. “It can be quite difficult for them, but the place has so much to offer.” he says. “They’re the type of kids who enjoy the outdoor life – and there’s plenty of that here.” Richards enjoys the great outdoors himself with fishing, shooting and skiing essential to his relaxation, although a whirlwind summer and early rugby season have left him precious little time to pursue any of them. Then there are those finer points – a drop of good wine and some nice food.

“I’ve heard good reports on salmon fishing on the Tyne and the Coquet,” he says. “I also ski – not very well – and it’s quite frightening for people to see me coming down at them. “I love food and wine – and on the right day and the right occasion, fish and chips is the right food, provided it’s good, of course. I’m a big fan of the Duke of Wellington at Newton, near Hexham – the food is very good there and it’s a beautiful location. That view at the back from the restaurant is fantastic. “London is supposedly where all the best restaurants are, then you come to Newcastle and find it has everything that London’s got.” Before his Newcastle Falcons appointment at the back end of last season, Dean Richards had served a three-year ban from rugby for his leading role in what has been termed Bloodgate – getting a player at Harlequins to bite on a “blood” capsule to feign injury. Several other people lost their jobs but the Dean Richards who has emerged from that episode is humbler, stronger and even more determined to demonstrate that his qualities as one of the game’s top coaches have, if anything, been enriched by his forced absence.“I wasn’t proud of myself, but you move on,” he has said. “I thought about getting away from the game altogether, but that didn’t last very long.” He has no qualms about starting rugby life again in the Championship, a familiar state of affairs, given that he took over at Harlequins in 2005 after they too had been relegated. He led them back into the top flight at the first time of asking and moulded them into one of Europe’s most feared sides. “The ultimate thing is to get promoted,” he says of the Falcons’ 2012-13 season. “Everything is geared towards that. It’s not just Semore’s and the club’s position, it’s

what the players want as well. The boys are quite resilient, which is good.” Richards responds readily to questions about his time coaching FC Grenoble in France in 2004 – a decision that with hindsight wasn’t maybe the right one, but one that was influenced by his admiration for the country and its people. He also played for a season with Roanne in the 1990s. “I love France,” he says. “I love the carefree approach to life they have and that their reasons for working are to help them live a comfortable and happy life – which includes drinking wine, eating the best cheeses, lovely food, lovely coffee, socialising in the squares and in the bars. “Work is way down in their priorities – work is there for one reason, to earn enough for them to live the lifestyle they want to live. I don’t think they save for a rainy day, either – they live for today.” Dean Richards isn’t so cavalier as to simply live for today and hope tomorrow takes care of itself. He has the weight of the North East’s rugby fans on his shoulders for a start. Plus there are wider implications – everybody knows that the region responds positively in every department when its sport is on top of its game. Newcastle Falcons players understand that too, and have responded in appropriate fashion. They realise that had they not, Bad Cop would be waiting somewhere behind that dressing room door.

Neil Gordon talks to Duncan Forster, MD of Blackthorn Timber Windows, about the advantages of choosing natural timber for double glazed windows and doors...

O

nce, uPVC seemed to be the only choice for double glazing units. Even owners of period properties, who felt ‘un-plasticisedpolyvinyl-chloride’ was out of keeping with the historic character of their homes, believed uPVC was more durable and easier to maintain than wood. But that was then, this is now. “All our timber windows and doors come with a 30 year warranty and have a life expectancy of at least 60 years,” says Duncan Forster of Northumberland based Blackthorn Timber Windows. “So we believe our products are much more durable and far better value than uPVC alternatives.” Duncan certainly knows both sides of the debate. After a spell working with uPVC double glazing he spent 6 years running a large specialist timber window and door manufacturer in Northumberland. Three years ago he went into business for himself. “I set up Blackthorn to offer traditional timber windows and doors with the benefits of modern double glazing and coatings combined with the specialist joinery skills and personal service needed to fit them properly,” Duncan continues. “Our turnover has doubled each year and we now cover an area from York to the Scottish Borders.” With uPVC still dominant in double glazing what is the secret of Blackthorn’s rapid success? “Modern materials can look OK in modern properties but equally they can be completely wrong in older houses. Timber however is more versatile so our windows and doors can be made to work perfectly with the existing architecture,” Duncan explains. “One

of the keys to this is the choice of colour which can make the windows blend harmoniously with the building and its surroundings,” he continues. “We try to retain the existing look as much as we can and one of the things that our customers really appreciate is that their neighbours often can’t tell that their windows have been changed!” Apart from better aesthetics, Duncan goes to extraordinary lengths to ensure his soft and hardwood products outperform other materials in terms of practicality. “All our frames are pressure treated, weather sealed and painted before the glass is fitted to ensure maximum long-term durability,” he adds. “The spray-painted coating is equivalent to applying eight coats of paint by hand and it is formulated to last a long time.” “Our paintwork is guaranteed not to flake or crack for 10 years and when it comes to the end of this time they don’t have to be stripped back to the wood for repainting,” says Duncan. “A light rub down and one topcoat is enough to make everything look as good as new.” A better fit, better durability and easier maintenance are not the only advantages Blackthorn windows have over their rivals. Duncan’s time served joiners can incorporate a number of extra details that can add to each home’s individuality. “We can take period stained glass from existing windows and fit it between the new panes to preserve the cherished features of the original windows,” says Duncan. “We can also install special reflective glass to

increase privacy in rooms that may be overlooked, noise-reducing glass for properties on busy roads and even fit Venetian blinds inside glazing units that will never get dusty. We install single glazed windows for homes requiring listed building consent, arches for barn conversions and large glazed screens to allow the light and the view to flood into a room.” Besides cutting heating bills (Blackthorn’s windows typically reduce heat loss by 70%), choosing natural timber fitted by expert craftsmen can also add thousands of pounds to the value of a house – but don’t take my word for it, let’s ask an expert: “When it comes to home improvements and house sales, spending money on quality is crucial to achieving the best sale price,” says Duncan Young of Sanderson Young property agents. “To give a recent example, the seller of a 1950's house in Gosforth fitted brown uPVC windows but six months later the buyer insisted the timber frames were restored or the price reduced! im Lewis is the voice of my children’s early years. The teenagers, chronically unimpressed by almost everything their mother does, express something close to interest when I mention I am to interview her. The five-year-old, with whom I am now reading Kim’s books a decade after the older children, is wide-eyed. “Is that really her dog, then?” he asks of Floss the sheepdog, one of Kim’s most well-known characters.

Floss was of course a real sheepdog, “the best we ever had”, says Kim. “She came up here on the train. A friend had spotted her on a council estate and knew she would be good.” Floss stars in a number of Kim’s stories of life on a 1,000-acre sheep farm in the North Tyne valley. As does James the shepherd boy, written in the image of her own son, for whom she began writing when he was three. I don’t know anyone with children who doesn’t love Kim’s stories and illustrations of life on the farm, though those days, sadly, are now gone. Kim’s two children, Sara and James, have flown and her husband,

… I get lost in drawing and I love the fact that you can go so deeply into something.”

Flea, who farmed the sheep, died five years ago of motor neurone disease. It was a shattering event that heralded a crippling creative block. “I thought I would never write again,” she says. But now, Kim has found a new world where her drawings and print work illustrate the words of others. Her collaborations with writers take her, she says, “to places I might not otherwise go. This work fills something of the gap left by the farm.” She works in a neat studio at The Hearth Arts Centre in Horsley, a restored manse in rural Northumberland where you can see and buy her work. Her artist’s statement says that she hopes “to express the secret kingdom of thought and feeling which happens between words and images…to capture the traces words leave in your mind,” which is a beautiful way of describing her minutely detailed work. Kim and the poet Linda France collaborated on Border Song, which celebrates a love of the land, of spirit, and love. In Through the Garden Gate, Kim’s delicate drawings respond to Moorbank, Newcastle University's Botanic Garden, where Linda France was Poet in Residence, while in Flying, a series of wood

engravings, drawings and etchings illustrate Linda’s poems on the theme of birds. In Hay Meadows, Kim and garden writer Susie White describe a year in the life of a hay meadow, and in Sanctuary, Kim’s botanical linocuts celebrate Chesters Walled Garden in Northumberland with text by Susie, the garden’s creator. And now a new chapter has arrived for Kim through her work as artist in residence with theatre company Demi-Paradise Productions in Lancaster. Her drawings are inspired by their work on a production of Much Ado About Nothing and Kim gathered text and image inspiration for ideas about expressive hand gestures by following the actors, crew and design team during rehearsals. She is, then, building a body of work which is far removed in subject matter from life on the farm, though the process remains the same. Her exquisitely detailed drawings, she says, whether they are of sheepdogs, plants or actors’ hands, “are a way of having a really good look at things. “The drawings with Demi-Paradise Productions focused on hands and body language. Hands, I find,

express personality, mood, feelings more so than the face. I get lost in drawing and I love the fact that you can go so deeply into something.” Does she get stuck for ideas? “Never, but I do get stuck for time”, she says, which is no surprise when you consider that a book used to take her a year. No doubt her current work will become as well-known as her books, though for now it is they which have brought her international acclaim and given people all over the world a glimpse of the natural rhythms of the North Tyne - the passing of the seasons, the circle of life on the farm. Kim, who grew up in Montreal, Canada, and came to the UK as an art student - which is how she ran into Flea - has recently discovered that her mother’s family goes back to 1640s Newcastle. Perhaps that is why she has always felt this is her spiritual home and, when her son James was little and a friend suggested she write and illustrate a book for him chronicling the shepherding year, her pen, pencil, crayon and pastel so vividly illustrated this wild part of northern England. Now, she is reading those same stories for her grandson, Harry, named by her daughter Sara for another of her much-loved characters. hat do you get if you pair a renowned textiles artist with an international fashion designer? The North East's most exclusive vintage fashion fair of course. Liz Hands speaks to two friends who are aiming to bring authentic vintage style to the region. "Denoting something from the past of high quality, especially something representing the best of its kind." - That's how the Oxford English Dictionary defines "vintage". And that's exactly the stance Mandy Pattullo and Jayne Turner take when it comes to deciding which

clothes can be included in the Newcastle Vintage Fashion Fair, and which just don’t make the grade. Imagine, if you will, they play the role of hi-end fashion bouncers. With pretty exacting standards, it takes a lot to get on their “guest list”. Dealers have to be true VIPs of the vintage world to sell at the event staged in the sumptuous surroundings of the Royal Station Hotel. That means they have to be selling clothing or accessories that are most definitely vintage and not just retro (don’t worry, we’ll explain the difference shortly). And, vitally, the items should not be

We’re appealing to the more discerning customer who wants something that bit different… customised as altering them can kill their value. So, not only should they be in good condition, but they should also be ageing beautifully and gracefully without any artificial additions. To put it another way, if a perfect piece of vintage clothing were a person, then it would be someone like Helen Mirren (yes, she’s in her seventh decade, but she’s still current), rather than, say, plastic surgery devotee Janice Dickinson who freely admits to an array of alterations which have left little of her original self. As Mandy explains: “We’re not looking at crafting or customising and it’s not about t-shirts and denim. A lot of fairs tend to be aimed squarely at the student market and are more retro than vintage, where you pick up the likes of Human League t-shirts from the 80s. “We confine our dealers to those selling high-quality pieces from the beginning of the century up to the 70s. We’re appealing to the more discerning customer who wants something that bit different. They come to us to find that gorgeous little Chanel tweed jacket.” Mandy, 55, and 31-year-old Jayne, certainly know a thing or two about how to spot a quality garment. The pair met ten years ago when Mandy was in charge of the textiles course at Newcastle College and Jayne went there to teach. Nowadays Jayne has equally lofty credentials in her career as a fashion designer. You may not know it, but

you could have worn one of the garments she created at the former Consett blacksmiths in County Durham where she has her studio. Her love affair with vintage became something of an obsession after Jayne embarked on a work placement with Jessica Ogden, the designer credited with being the pioneer of salvage fashion. Now, Jayne uses distressed fabrics and collected trims, linen and lace in her creations and has sold intricate work to the likes of Topshop, Donna Karan, Calvin Klein, Abercrombie and Fitch, Coast and Monsoon. Some put Jayne’s designs into production just as they are and some use them to inspire what will eventually hit the catwalks and the High Street. Mandy’s focus is somewhat different. She works from a studio in a converted manse in Horsley, Northumberland, where she refashions old textiles into garments and framed pieces of art. But while what they do with textiles may be different, their shared passion for using vintage materials first sealed Mandy and Jayne’s friendship. Jayne sums it up neatly and self-deprecatingly when she says they came together through their “love of old things”.

“We’ve always gone to vintage fairs together,” she adds. “We used to go to Manchester and Leeds and, instead of going to Harvey Nicks, we’d take our cheque books and flasks of tea with us and off we’d go to ‘buy old rags’ as our husbands would say. Finally, fed up with travelling, the two revived the Newcastle Vintage Fashion Fair in 2011, inviting all the dealers they loved to come to the North East. It’s now a bi-annual affair which has tapped into the enduring vintage trend. While wearing vintage was once seen as the preserve of the bohemian art crowd, it has now very firmly hit the mainstream. Coming to the forefront of fashion consciousness when actress Julia Roberts wore that iconic black-and-white vintage Valentino gown to the 2001 Oscars, vintage is now worn by everyone from supermodel Kate Moss to teenagers who team a vintage Chanel jacket with their jeans and businesswomen who look for a one-off dress for their work do. And the Newcastle Vintage Fashion Fair has even converted people who weren’t previously into vintage. “My sister-in-law used to shop solely on the High Street and she bought a gorgeous sequin dress for >>

We get people who live a vintage lifestyle and dress << her Christmas party and my mum came out with a beautiful fur jacket,” says Jayne. The beauty of the fair, she adds is you never know what you’re going to get. “It’s pot luck really,” she adds. “You can pick up anything from a beautifully tailored suit to a silk scarf for 99p. Last winter, we got silk dresses and a lot of garments with head-to-toe sequins. We got quite a lot of Dior jewellery too, but you just have to come along and see what there is.” One of the dealers setting up stall is Durham-based Amanda Simpson, who runs thefashionstudio.com. “I’ve got 1950s dresses, mink stoles and coats, and costume jewellery,” she says. Labels on offer from Amanda will include vintage finds from Jaeger and Windsmoor, famous for its tailoring, along with a unique Betty Page dress with printed pictures of Paris. Owner of Lake District vintage haven Kissing Cows Gail Storr is also set to attend. “We’ll be bringing a good selection of on trend vintage pieces and classic items including a beautiful 1960s wedding suit, a stunning 1950s hand-beaded dress, fur coats and cosy knitwear,” she says. “We source our items from lots of places, some of it thrifted locally and some from markets in Paris,

London, Europe, and American wholesalers. The best selection was on a market stall on Ko Phi Phi Island in Thailand where they sold beautiful vintage dresses. When we went back later to buy more, the stall had disappeared – it was like a mirage.” While most trends come and go, vintage shows no sign of waning, something Jayne puts down to the circular nature of fashion. “Whatever is in, vintage is always on trend,” she says. “If military’s coming back, or leather, you can find a military jacket or a leather skirt. The trends on the High Street for autumn/winter – brocade, lace, velvet – are all from vintage so people will come for the real McCoy.” The chance to buy something truly original could be why the fair has gained such popularity, regularly attracting 1,000 visitors over just six hours. Who would have thought a love of old things would lead to an event that really is the best of its kind?

lways check the fit and try it on. Don’t look at the size because vintage sizes are very different to picking up a size 10 on the High Street. Look at how clean the garment is and think about how you can clean it if it’s not perfect. Check the armpits for sweat stains, because you probably won’t get those out. Make sure everything that should go with an item, like the belt, is still with it and check that the lining and stitching are in good condition. Men should look out for quality tweed. For women, search for old cashmere. It’s much softer and better quality than new, and buy tailored jackets you can wear with everything. For the home, buy linen to make into cushion covers and quilts to turn into throws. If you’re buying evening wear, look for labels like Bruce Oldfield and Jean Muir and, the Holy Grail of vintage finds would be an Ossie Clark piece from the 70s. Costume jewellery makes a great stocking filler. You can pick up a truly unique costume piece for between £2.50 and £15. Set yourself a budget before you go because it’s easy to get carried away. And, finally, haggle. Don’t be shy. Use any defects you see to get the price down.

Innovative her work may be, but there is no place in her productions, she says, for intellectual exclusivity “I don’t want people to pay for the privilege of being made to feel stupid” – and the company is constantly developing new audiences. “And if it works here in the North East, you know you can take it on tour,” she says. She trained as a dancer, but terrible stage fright and a dislike of her own style put her off performance. “I wanted to make dance, but with other people. It’s no hardship for me not to be on stage,” she says, adding that her inspiration comes from “the potential when people come together. Our collaborators on this performance are so amazing it feels almost unreal.” These world-class collaborators include Carol Ann Duffy, Murray Gold (music), Phil Eddolls (set design), Michele Clapton (costume); Malcolm Rippeth (lighting design) and Lesley Sharp (narration). Considering the quality of the people involved, it is incredible that the opportunities to see this production will be limited to a handful. “It costs so much to stage, so yes, this is limited-edition theatre,” says Liv. “You know, people give their life to dance and they end up with a cardboard box of photos and home movies and nothing else but memories. I love nothing more than sitting in an audience and feeling their energy, and hearing from people about their memories of performances that have touched them. I

t is not unusual to feel enriched, excited, even inspired by theatre. But proud of yourself for going? Maybe when you’re on your first school trip to see Shakespeare, but not as a seasoned theatre-loving adult, surely? Well, the first time I saw Theatre Sans Frontiers, I did feel quite pleased with myself. Not because it was challenging or difficult, but because it was performed entirely in Spanish. The Spanish dramatist Lorca is familiar in translation, but as a conversational Spanish speaker (‘una cervaza por favor’) I hadn’t considered seeing his work in its original tongue until I was persuaded by a fan of Theatre Sans Frontieres, which produces and performs plays in other languages, mainly French and Spanish. The result was one of the most enriching evenings in the theatre I have experienced; an opportunity to enjoy the lyricism of language without the literal understanding of every word getting in the way. This performance of Amor en el Jardin (Love in the Garden) at Northern Stage was among my most memorable, for the best reasons, in any theatre. Co-artistic director of Hexham-based Theatre Sans Frontieres, Sarah Kemp, is instantly recognisable from that performance. She is delighted that I enjoyed it, but in the 21 years since she and three co-founders began TSF, she’s never been surprised that there are audiences. “With a background in educational drama, I always >>

We celebrate individuality.” Lorent’s work is always unusual, sometimes eccentric, invariably interesting, intriguing and emotionally charged. Her passion for her work is tangible and rooted in the fantasy of potential: “That moment when you receive an amazing piece of music in your inbox or open a parcel of costumes,” she says. Lorent is a lover of the magical, the serendipitous, the intriguing. When we meet, the company is developing a new show, Rapunzel; a new representation of the classic fairy tale adapted by the Poet Laureate Carol Ann Duffy and co-produced by Northern Stage. This is a Sadler's Wells commission, which means it is a very big deal indeed. Artistic director Liv is inspired by the dark themes of the story. “We take the story and expand the themes, including those of love and yearning for children; the pain of childlessness and the lost child. The challenge is in making a production that children [over seven] can enjoy while adults love it on another level. It is dark and beautiful.” The fantasy and beauty of dance theatre inspires Lorent, who asserts that “every single movement, no matter how minute, must have meaning and beauty”.

into a small office at Queen’s Hall, Hexham, given for free. “We had a desk and a shared phone,” says Sarah. “We were incredibly grateful.” Still based at Queen’s Hall, this small company is internationally known and has recently returned from a stint in Melbourne. It collaborates with international artists to create theatre of puppetry, mime, shadow

play, clowning, music and video. Since 1991, TSF has produced more than 40 shows in English, French, German and Spanish and toured to theatres, arts centres, schools and colleges and in recent years to festivals in Tunisia, Egypt and China. In its upcoming production, TSF explores 500 years of wine trade between the Canary Islands and the UK. Full of songs, music and outrageous characters, Canary Gold is an adventure of history and theatre. “We write collaboratively,” says Sarah, “and this began with four of us getting together and improvising elements of the story of the trade in Canary wine from the 1600s to the present day. We ended up with a play set in a wine tasting in Canary Wharf. “It’s a fascinating process during which we end up with masses of material. You have to find ways of making associations without making them contrived. We draw parallels between now and then and portray historic events with contemporary relevance.” The play is performed in English, Spanish and French; a multi-lingual performance of which Sarah never tires. “The more you do, the more you discover you can do and the more opportunities come,” she says. “Language allows the discovery of cultures and humanity. What is Chancel Repair Liability?

hancel Repair Liability is a law which dates back to medieval times and came about when every parish had its own rector and he had rights which included levying taxes and income from the land in the parish but was also responsible for the repair of the church chancel, which essentially was funded from such taxes and income. Although this law has been rarely used, when it is used, it could mean potentially huge bills for homeowners. This was brought to the attention of the public when Andrew and Gail Wallbank received a demand for almost £1,000,000 to fund repairs of their parish’s medieval church. They commenced a legal battle and ultimately the Law Lords found in

favour of the parish council, leaving the Wallbanks with a £350,000 bill after legal costs. [1] This will all change from 13th October 2013 when new laws will come into force. New owners of land will only be bound by chancel repair if the latter is entered on the Registered Title kept at the Land Registry. It will put the onus on to the Parish Church Councils to identify the land owners and register their interest before this date. We can help clients by carrying out a Chancel Repair Search at the start of the buying process which would reveal whether there was any potential liability. If a potential liability is revealed in the search we can arrange Chancel Indemnity Insurance to protect the Purchaser against any risk of potential future liability. The great outdoors beats television as family entertainment hands down – and risks are part of the enjoyment, as Alastair Gilmour discovers

A

voice calls out from a tree 40 feet above ground level. Through the branches, a pair of hands yank on a pulley. The voice’s helmeted owner appears on a small platform and takes up the slack of a rope. A teenager zips along it, whoops with delight and jerks to a halt, bouncing up and down like a human yoyo. This is the High Ropes section of Beamish Wild, an open-air adventure playground at Beamish Hall Hotel in County Durham, where children act out grown-up fantasies and adults can’t help being big kids. It’s adventure and it’s excitement and enthusiastic screams can be heard all over the wooded estate. We even resist the temptation to shout “Geronimo” – maybe kids don’t do that now; it’ll be more like “Yoshi” or “Donkey Kong” – but secretly we ache to join in. The North East offers a full alphabet of outdoor activities from archery to windsurfing, with canoeing,

mountain biking and paintballing in between. Rather than using our leisure hours to play on an Xbox or watching repeats of repeats on television, there are many of us who would much rather spend the weekend camping in a wigwam and engage in a whole host of healthy outdoor pursuits. All have one thing in common, though – there’s a sense of danger involved. However, there isn’t an activity anywhere that is free from danger, from lighting a campfire on a lakeshore to bodyboarding in the North Sea, and at the heart of parenting should be the desire to open children’s eyes to new experiences and to widen their horizons. We’ve all heard the well-meaning warnings about impending disaster: “That could take someone’s eye out”. What, a firelighter? “A swan can break a man’s arm with its wing.” Has any A&E department ever had to

deal with an arm smashed by a swan? If we never ride a horse, climb a hill, go out to sea in a heavy swell, or dangle on that zipwire, surely we’ll be depriving ourselves and our children of some of the best moments that life has to offer. And, if we decide that the likes of white-water rafting isn’t for us, then we have the option of not doing it again. “The danger is sometimes part of the excitement,” says Martin Hammill, brewery manager at Hadrian Border Brewery in Newcastle, and a former trawlerman. His adventure playground is the stretch of harbours between Craster and Holy Island.

“I got my two lads into fishing because they grew up with me doing it for a job,” he says. “I also enjoyed fishing with a rod and line for a hobby and took them camping in the holidays. I got them a rod each. We now really enjoy sea fishing together and game fishing for trout and salmon. “And, it doesn’t matter if you don’t catch anything on the odd occasion, but its great when you do.” Back on dry land, Beamish Wild reeks of woodland and anticipation. Whether you’re five or 50 you can imagine turning savage, hunting intruders from other forest villages, or simply appreciating being let loose to swing, scramble and shoot arrows to your heart’s content. There are camps and clearings and “swamps” to cross on stepping stones and imaginative use of planks. Further on there’s some sort of game going on between a green helmet group and one in orange. It involves more ropes and swings, but it’s family fun with unity and togetherness making the game spin faster. It goes without saying that recreation five miles off the Northumberland coast is a different kettle of fish from that of a verdant country estate. Physical risks should be evaluated and minimised with all safety precautions taken, but it would be particularly sad if even the tiniest bit of danger were eliminated from our children’s lives. It’s only by getting out and doing things that they can begin to engage with one another – and the world at large around them. Martin Hammill offers his advice for fishing trips. “You need to tell the skipper what your experience is and – importantly – what your expectations are. If you have youngsters or those who are in any way disabled, ask if the boat or trip will be suitable – many of them are geared up specifically for family groups.

“Always go with a licensed or registered charter boat. They have to have insurance which makes their boats, equipment and operator competence subject to stringent safety checks. This gives them a Code of Practice certificate and dictates how far out to sea a boat can safely operate – I’ve often been out on boats where you’re nearer Germany than home.” Martin fished from Craster recently on an angling boat run by local fisherman Dougie Hogg and his sons. This sport lends itself to everyone, from hardcore wreck fishermen to youngsters just going for a few mackerel. “Dougie the skipper is very knowledgeable as he has fished these waters all his life for crab and lobster,” says Martin. “With the likes of him knowing all the hard ground, wrecks and reefs, sporting anglers can increase their chances of good-sized fish.” Picking our way along the forest trail at Beamish Wild (where some ancient-looking trees are definitely straight out of a Grimm’s fairytale), we come across several species of eagle sitting on perches jingling their secure leads. A snowy owl’s head swivels uncannily while it lets out a blood-curdling sound halfway between a whistle and a screech – let’s call it a wheech. A pair of bald eagles perch majestically on poles, the proud and haughty birds are magnificent reminders of why they symbolise the United States of America. Being close to nature in the raw on a fishing boat in the North Sea is exhilarating and steadying oneself to plunge 40 feet from a branch can be nerve-wracking, but as enthusiasts such as Martin Hammill will confirm, hazards are part of the excitement of outdoor pursuits. Trying to gain a step on the pension ladder when your finances are squeezed in the current climate can be tough. However, with the state pension age increasing to 68 by 2044, starting to save into a personal pension when you are young, could make a real difference in when you can afford to retire. TRAVEL How many of us drive or take the bus to work? Perhaps your distance to work could be a manageable walk or cycle, rather than a cramped commuter ride to the office. Not only would the fresh air and exercise do us a world of good, the savings made can also be put to better use. Currently a single bus journey in Newcastle is around £1.40. By walking or cycling to and from work you could save £14 a week. This could result in an annual saving of around £650.

Someone smoking 20 cigarettes a day, at a cost of £6, could save in excess of £2,000 in a year. EXERCISE How many of us join a gym in January with the aim of becoming more fit and losing the pounds. More often than not the pounds that are lost are from your bank account as gym attendance wanes. On a gym membership of £60 per month, this could save us around £720 per annum. Make more use of your beautiful city, walk, run or cycle through our streets and parks and it’s free.

SOCIALISING By no means should we be sitting at home counting the pennies we have saved, but become a money wise consumer. We live in a big city which offers a wide variety of restaurants, bars and entertainment. Sign up for the money saving sites to see the great deals on offer, or go out earlier and take advantage of pre-theatre deals. The average cost of a three course meal out is around £20. If you dine out once a week, take advantage of one of the many two-for-one offers and split the cost between you, that’s a saving of £520 in a year.

COFFEE TIME That ‘posh’ coffee on the way to work costs us around £2.50 a day. By limiting this treat to a Friday and filling your vacuum mug at home Monday to Thursday, savvy workers could save £10 a week, around £480 in the working year. LUNCH TIME The sandwich shop around the corner from the office is a popular destination for lunch but swapping this for home made lunches will help with the pennies (and also the lbs). By bringing lunch from home you are more aware of what you are eating and if an average lunch is around £3.50, this will save £17.50 per week. This is a saving of £840 over the working year. SMOKING Thousands of people give up smoking each year with a view to bettering their health. Why not also think about improving your finances at the same time?

I

f I ran my own business, I would get pretty cynical about the endless succession of regeneration agencies and development organisations that promise much yet deliver little. However there is something very different about NE1 and I notice it the moment I park my car. The Dean Street car park, which is opposite NE1’s offices in Milburn House, is displaying a banner announcing that parking is free after 5pm. I am so startled I have to read the banner twice because it has been a long time since I’ve seen anything offering any help for the motorist.

“It is all part of our Alive After Five campaign,” explains Sean Bullick, who is NE1’s Chief Executive. “We noticed that there was a period between offices and shops closing at 5pm and the city centre’s nightlife beginning around 8pm when Newcastle seemed to grind to a halt. We decided to make a concerted effort to plug this gap by persuading retailers to stay open longer, organising better public transport and cutting car park fees.” Of course, late night shopping and other incentives to persuade people to stay in urban centres longer are nothing new but what is different about Newcastle’s

Alive After Five is that it happens every day and all year round, not just once a week or at Christmas. “It has been a great success,” says Sean. “The scheme has attracted nearly two million extra visits and generated over £100 million in extra income for city centre businesses but we have also seen other benefits. For example, lots of offices are noticing that their staff aren’t rushing out at lunchtime to run errands because they can now shop on their way home. The result is a more relaxed and more productive working environment.” Alive After Five is just one of the innovative projects NE1 has brought to Newcastle city centre. Others include the Pocket Parks, which transform rundown corners of the city centre into attractive places to sit and have a sandwich or take a break from a busy day. Another is the Newcastle City Marina which built a 130 metre floating pontoon, with fully serviced moorings, for visiting vessels right beside the Tyne Bridge. “We are very proud of the City Marina because this is exactly the sort of thing we were established to do,” says Sean. “Our remit is to take projects that have stalled or that can’t get off the ground and make them happen as quickly and efficiently as possible.” This is no idle boast. NE1 managed to get the City Marina open for business in just six months, a phenomenally short time for any major project, but as Sean says this is exactly what Business Improvement Development companies like NE1 are designed to do. If you are unfamiliar with BIDs perhaps I should explain. They are not national government organisations like the old Regional Development Agencies such as the recently dissolved One North East. Nor are they local government schemes like the very-much-active Newcastle and Gateshead Initiative. They are not voluntary organisations for business like a Chamber of Commerce or professional bodies like the Law Society.

BIDs are all of these things and none of these things. They are independent companies set up by local businesses with the specific aim of improving business conditions in their particular area. They are small but focused, typically covering just one or two post code areas, and paid for by a levy on the business rates. To start a BID the majority of eligible businesses must vote in favour of the idea and once established, they are run as private companies with a board of directors and an executive staff. “Of course we work very closely with local and national government agencies to source funding and other support but BIDs are becoming an increasingly popular way for business to co-operate with each other at a more immediate level,” says Sean. He goes on to explain that NE1 has a threefold strategy. Alongside their Operations programme, which implements the high profile projects mentioned above, there is the Leadership function and the Events function. “Besides Alive After Five and so on, the work of our Operations programme is perhaps best illustrated by our Street Rangers and our Clean Team,” says Sean. “These dedicated people react and resolve specific problems and whether its cleaning up litter or helping visitors with their queries, they bring a level of enthusiasm and professionalism to their roles which is second to none.” These front line staff are made up of a core team of paid employees supplemented by volunteers and typically NE1 have financed them though such schemes as the government’s Future Job Fund so pressure on levy payers is reduced. Indirectly, this means NE1 has cash to invest in new technology developed by local businesses such as the bike rental locks patented by Newcastle company Scratch Bikes. This type of proactive support for new business brings us very neatly to NE1’s second role.

“Our Leadership function involves looking at long term solutions for city centre problems,” says Sean. “Take Central Station, there have been lots of proposals to improve this important gateway into the city and NE1 is perfectly positioned to bring together the organisations that can make these desperately needed improvements happen. On a smaller scale, though no less important, we support such things as rolling out free Wi-Fi for Newcastle and the Newgate Centre that helps young people find jobs, training and support for starting their own business.” My hour with Sean is nearly up and we still need to talk about NE1’s third function which brings such spectacular sporting and cultural events such as Zapcat power boat racing, New Year’s Eve fireworks, World Cities Week and Newcastle Fashion Week to the city. “Hosting sporting, cultural and arts events are crucial to re-establishing people’s habit of going into the city centre,” says Sean. “Happily our events have been such a success, and generated such enormous amounts of new business, we are planning an expanded programme for 2013 including a new landmark occasion.” Sensing a scoop I ask Sean for more details. “Unfortunately I can’t say too much at the moment but it’s bound to be something special so do watch this space,” he says and I suppose that is a good place to stop. Gail McLean offers an overview of the current residential rental market

T

here have undoubtedly been some major changes to the residential housing market over the past 5 years, and one of these has been the perception of the rental market. With many more people having to, or indeed choosing to, rent in this climate, there has been a shift in the category of tenant, and an overlap of the sales and lettings markets. This trend is definitely strengthening the quality of business at Sanderson Young, and head of Regional Lettings, Gail McLean, is extremely proud to announce yet another target smashed, with 2012 being their most successful year, ten years in a row. “We have proven ourselves once again, surpassing expectations and building on our strength to create an unrivalled service within this highly competitive environment.” Gail is also encouraged by the security offered in this market, with tenants choosing to stay longer in rented properties. “Where once the sales and lettings market were seen as very separate entities, we are definitely finding that rentals slots within a buying process, often with homebuyers achieving a successful sale on their own house, with a view to rent for six to twelve months whilst they make their onward purchase,” she says. “Buyers want to make sure they are in the best possible position should their dream home come onto the market, and be safe in the knowledge that they have the luxury of not having to rush into a purchase.” The sales and lettings team are also working together

much more, in order to fully service a client should the market not support a sale. “We have achieved two rentals just last week from a client who was struggling to sell investment properties, and we will then pass this back to the sales team when the tenancy is coming to an end, so there is a great deal of communication and dedication over both departments.” As well as this influx of new business as a result of difficult economic conditions, let’s not forget rental properties have been extremely popular in their own right over the past ten years. “We have very loyal landlords, who have used us for a number of years due to the service levels we provide and the quality of tenants we attract. We concentrate on secure, longer term lets, with the average term now being around 12 months. Many more tenants wish to stay on much longer than this of course, and my longest tenancy is now an incredible seven years!” Due to the rising popularity of rental, the department have also noticed some trends coming through due to high demand for particular locations. “There are several hotspots within the Newcastle area where rent is actually rising due to bidding wars,” says Gail. “The city centre is still as popular as ever, with demand purely down to location and quality. We have

recently rented a two bedroom apartment in St Ann’s Quay for £950pcm, and a one bedroom apartment in the same development for £650pcm.” “Suburban family homes in Gosforth and Jesmond also attract fantastic levels of interest. We have recently rented a five bedroom family home on Jesmond Park West for £2000pcm and a five bedroom townhouse on Carlton Terrace for £2500pcm,” adds Gail. However, rural areas are creating a niche in the market, with serious renters looking for long term lifestyle changes. “We have become truly regional, and our presence is also strong in the Tyne Valley, Ponteland and South Northumberland.” Sanderson Young have diversified further at the Alnwick office, with a fully managed service being set up to service North Northumberland. “We can now offer landlords throughout the region an extremely professional service, which also includes a full rent protection policy.” So what does this Autumn/Winter hold for Sanderson Young Regional Lettings? “The lettings market is extremely fast-paced and exciting, and at Sanderson Young we are embracing technological advancements, using iPads on valuations and viewings in order to match the tenant to their requirements, and promoting our mobile website and iPhone app to keep our target market enthused.”

orth-east house builders Cussins are about to start work on the first development in the west of the town for decades. Neil Gordon talks to Joe Dixon, MD of Gosforth based JD Joinery & Building Services, about an energy efficient building process...

I

f you are a fan of television property shows you may have already met Joe Dixon. He is one of the good guys in the BBC series Cowboy Trap in which bona fide builders (like Joe) put right the atrocious mistakes made by the cowboys of the title. “I’ve done two series with the BBC and they’re very particular about who they use as their good guys,” says Joe. “They contacted me through the Federation of Master Builders and I had to supply a lot of background information, references and testimonials.” I am talking to Joe on the top of a windswept fell near Whitfield, deep in the heart of the North Pennine Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. Behind us is the first storey of what will be a superb, stone-built house but what is the link between Joe, the BBC and this new family home? These materials, combined with the range of specialist skills needed to install them, keep solar heat in and the cold out, so cutting a building’s energy use.” The Passivhaus standard certainly makes impressive claims about reducing domestic carbon emissions and fuel bills but what are the practical benefits for the householder? Let’s look at the numbers: The home Joe is building at Whitfield is approximately 180m2. The average home owner in the North East could expect to pay around £1,500 per year for heating and hot water but with Passivhaus their fuel bill could be slashed by around 90% to £180 per year. That’s a colossal saving of £1,320 over a twelve month period,

so Passivhaus seems to be an ideal solution for a new home built in an environmentally sensitive area - but can the system be used in other locations? “Yes,” says Joe. “New buildings built to Passivhaus standards are popping up all over the UK and it can even be applied to existing buildings.” Besides being a member of the Federation of Master Builders, Joe is also a member of the Passivhaus Trust, as is his architect Mark Siddall of low energy architectural practice LEAP. Fiona Barratt has completely gutted her London home and is busy furnishing her stunning Georgian Manor house in Northumberland. She talks to Liz Hands about how she creates her consummately luxurious interiors.

W

hen empress of fashion Eleanor Lambert said: “Taste is a sharpened eye for the beautiful, the interesting and the unusual – coupled with the talent to apply all of these to one’s life,” she could easily have been talking about Fiona Barratt. For renowned interior designer Fiona clearly does have a beautiful life. She splits her time between her stunning Georgian townhouse in London and her sprawling Manor house in Northumberland, all the time juggling spending time with family – she is married to recently-retired footballer Sol Campbell and is mum to 15-month-old Isabella – with keeping an international clientele happy.

But while Fiona admits having all of that on her plate can be “physically and mentally draining,” she says it is simply a matter of being “supremely organised”. Organised she may be but clearly talent and hard work play a big part too. The Barratt surname has become synonymous with Barratt Homes, founded by Fiona’s grandfather Sir Laurie Barratt, and with Peter Barratt’s garden centres, run by her mum and dad Angela and Peter. Now, with business acumen clearly running in the family, the Barratt moniker is becoming just as well known for interiors. A former Newcastle Central High pupil, Fiona studied at Chelsea’s College of Art and Parsons School of Design in New York before spending three years working for Kelly Hoppen. She launched her own company in 2006.

Fiona counts Richard Branson among her clients, having designed his ski lodge in Verbier. She has just finished a new-build beach house in Majorca and is currently working on a 400-year-old watermill in Surrey. But her own homes are her labours of love. Fiona gutted her six-storey Grade II-listed Chelsea townhouse and has created a home that exudes the kind of style which has become her trademark – luxurious yet warm “When we bought the house it hadn’t been touched

for the best part of 40 years so it needed to be completely gutted,” she explains. The results are simply stunning. Digging out the basement under the garden and removing one floor has created a magnificent kitchen and a banquette seating area complete with a three-tier chandelier. On the first floor is a formal sitting room with a wide corridor area, which Fiona and Sol have made into a library. A lift takes you up to the top three floors where there are four bedrooms, all with their own en suites. But it is when you reach the very top floor, with its wall of windows that you get to Fiona’s favourite part of the house. “You can open up all the windows and sit outside, where we’ve got a fire. There are views over

the river and Battersea on one side and the gardens of Chelsea on the other side. It’s amazing to have so much peace in London.” And it is that get-away-from-it-all feeling Fiona adores when she comes to Northumberland. “By the end of the week, I feel I really need it,” she says. Creating such a haven at Hallington Hall, Corbridge, for her hopefully growing family – Fiona makes no secret of the fact she wants more children – has, however, taken time, hard work and vision. “We’ve had to strip everything right back,” she says. “As we were doing it, we were finding more things wrong. The front façade was simply falling away because there had been a fire at some point, so the front wall

was gradually edging away from the rest of the house.” While some may have been fazed by such a daunting project, Fiona now just needs to add the finishing touches. “It’s about 50% furnished so far because it’s a work in progress, we like to find things on our travels.” The contrast between Fiona’s city and country lives is marked by different styles of decorating. “Our London home is very calming and cool with a lot of greys. But in the country, our morning room has a lot of dark browns. It’s cosy and warm. We’ve got seagrass wallpaper, beautiful chunky wool carpet and lots of antiques.” It is in this relaxed atmosphere Fiona feels most creative and Northumberland is where she is doing most of the designs for a new range of “very textural” furniture she plans to launch within the next 12 to 18 months. With yet another project on the go, and a move in the pipeline in London to a new apartment, it is probably just as well former England defender Sol, who has just retired after two decades in the game, is giving her a hand. “He’s always loved architecture and is now getting involved to help make business decisions about how we expand. My Mum and Dad worked together for 30 years so I grew up with parents who worked together and now it’s nice Sol and I get to do the same thing.”

RuTH BOND Design and fashion graduate Ruth Bond recently scooped two major national accolades, Kitchen Design of the Year (over 25K) and Bathroom Design of the Year (under 15K), the first time in the history of the Design Awards that both prizes went to the same person. “The bathroom project was a refurbishment in an old Victorian house for a couple used to staying in niche hotels and who enjoy spa breaks,” explains Ruth. “They wanted to lighten up the dark, small space and achieve a luxurious, welcoming environment with a relaxing spa feeling. I think I was subconsciously inspired by a sparkling white rock called the Scala di Turche on holiday in Sicily. The starting point however was a mosaic tile sample of white stone circles-within-circles that I discovered on a research trip to a porcelain factory  in Spain. She says: “We didn’t wa nt to create a typical hol iday home interior with deckch air stripes and shells so we opted for a colour and texture palette reflective of the beautiful, rugged landscapes of Northumberland. She has also designed for The Manor House in Gosfort h, a residential home wh ere Jennifer says “we wante d to provide an interior more akin to a boutique hotel than a care establishment” In London ’s Kensington, Jennifer redesigned a luxury apa rtment. “It was our aim to maximise and counterac t the spatial limitations by creating a light and airy interior,” she says. “We use d a neutral colour palette in tandem with reflective surfaces and carefully-con sidered lighting.” www.bernhart.co.uk

GEORGEBOND Jesmond-based George Bond, who counts a host of superstars among his clientele, became a  household name after appearing on ITV’s Better Homes as its resident designer. He and his team have just completed a stunning revamp in Cleadon for someone he would only say “is in football, but not a footballer”. “My brief was to make the house habitable and glamorous,” he says. “It was very dated and Edwardian, so some of it was quite ugly. I asked if they would mind if I started again and that’s what I did, knocking walls out, putting in a new staircase and making rooms bigger.” Because his client loved American Cherrywood, that was used for doors and floors and a handmade kitchen in three shades of walnut is a key focal point. The dining room is traditional with a warm red colour scheme and, upstairs, three rooms were knocked into one to form one large bedroom and dressing room. “We’ve become close friends and, when I go for dinner and stand in the entrance hall, I think: ‘Did I really do this?’ It still takes my breath away.”  www.georgebond.tv

GEOMETRICS “Geometric patterns and prints, influenced from Mexican, South American and Scandinavian design, are at the forefront of designers’ schemes this season. The great thing about this trend is its adaptability.” So how can a mere mortal achieve this stylish look? “The geometric pattern has such presence it can be combined with most other prints without appearing lost. Prints I feel work best with geometrics have to be floral, brightly coloured damasks and animal print.” So what are Sam’s top tips for a stress-free design overhaul? “The geometric look can be as bold or as subtle as you like, so why not brighten a neutral room with a full-on feature wall of a patterned paper, or add one or two accents some throw cushions or a single statement chair. Bright patterns can really shine when used in small quantities and can be a great addition to most design aesthetics. I have a fabulous pink geometric chair in stock at One Six Three for only £175.”

he Range Rover has always been a firm favourite for not only the Royal family, but also sportsmen and leading business people and even our very own local leading estate agent! Launched back in 1970 the car was never actually designed to be a luxury vehicle. The original car had vinyl seats along with a plastic dash that was designed to be hosed down by owners. Hardly oozed class! Considering the Range Rover has been with us for 32 years, this current car is the 4th Generation and it looks quite long and athletic, or a much more butch

Evoque. The new sleeker shape not only looks sporty but it weighs a substantial 420kg less than the outgoing model. The car is the first SUV to have an all aluminium structure. The Range Rover has been given revised aluminium suspension, which will help the car to drive much flatter, and it will also give customers much more confidence in corners. Land Rover has introduced a next generation Terrain Response System, which monitors the road constantly and it selects the appropriate settings. The interior promises to be even plusher with digital dials, massage seats and electric split tailgate. The

excellent dual view screen has been carried over from the outgoing model and this allows passengers to watch a DVD while the driver concentrates on the satellite navigation map and instructions. In order to make the dash look less cluttered, there has been a 50% reduction in switchgear. The gear lever has been replaced with a rotary dial box first seen in the Jaguar XF. Passengers sitting in the rear will find the rear leg room greatly improved. The wheelbase has been extended by 40mm and rear passengers now have an extra 4.7” legroom. Emerging markets like China and Russia will be able to order a long wheelbase model, this will increase the wheelbase by an extra 150mm. As the Range Rover is going to be facing stiff competition from Bentley, Aston Martin, Maserati and Lamborghini there is going to be more emphasis on making the car much more luxurious. A two-seat rear passenger cabin will give passengers much more room to stretch out and enjoy the ultimate in luxury. Top-of-the range models should cost around £150k, but they will feature a teak lined boot, twin electric rear seats and his and hers rear iPads. Anyone looking to buy the King of the Road or Off Road should look no further and dash down to your local Land Rover dealership.

he most eagerly anticipated car launch last year was the Evoque and Land Rover had taken deposits for a massive 18,000 before the car was even launched. The car has gone on to become a sales phenomenon as waiting lists grew quickly and people were paying over list price to have the must have car this year. Land Rover and their suppliers running out of parts didn’t help as waiting lists became even longer. This car is the smallest Range Rover ever and it has the BMW X1 and Audi A3 firmly in its sights. Victoria Beckham designed the car’s interior. She has gone on to design a bespoke, more macho model that would be driven by David which is available for an eye watering £80k. Range Rover has however really aimed this car at women. They predict 90% of buyers will be new to the brand and they will also be much younger than traditional owners. The car turns heads wherever you go with the rally look wheel arches and glittering front lamps. The squat design is like no other Suv on sale at the moment. When you step inside the car, you are greeted with an array of glistening switches and dials. The rotary dial

gearbox is carried over from more expensive models, as is the great split view screen. The car is available in either a three or five-door model; the original concept was based on the three-door model. The five-door model has an extra 1.2” of extra headroom and accessing the rear of the three-door model is quite hard. Rear passengers will find it quite claustrophobic. Boot space is ideal for the supermarket run and there is enough room for two medium sized suitcases. To save weight, the designers have used Aluminium in the bonnet, roof and in the suspension components. The car weighs 1.64 tonnes and it is the lightest Range Rovers on sale. The car was launched with either a 2.0lt petrol engine or a 2.2lt diesel engine. Although the petrol engine is not as agricultural as the diesel, it will not be the best choice for resale. In a move that has shocked most die-hard Land Rover fans a two-wheel-drive Evoque was introduced and another market segment has opened for Land Rover. Although this car is based on the Freelander chassis it looks a million dollars and a year on this car is still turning heads. Eric Idle’s lyrical appeal from the 2012 Olympics has already been taken up on Tyneside. Brian Nicholls explains…

E

RIC Idle’s Olympic song and dance was a wow because Always Look on the Bright Side is an ideal antidote for “recession”. Newcastle and its coastal neighbours already have their bright sides. The city’s getting a £92m triple fillip from government to speed the presently slow-growing Science Central quarter (within a Newcastle United cheer of St James’s Park); a once jaded area behind Central Station (romantically now called “Stephenson Quarter”); and urgent transformation of neglected East Pilgrim Street. Newcastle, one of Britain’s six Science Cities, is applying science and technology to progress energy

conservation and quality of life for ageing folk. Science Central promises the city centre’s biggest commercial development in a decade, with people there day and night, where Newcastle Brewery once stood. It’ll rise in phases over 20 years - new streets with offices and shops forming science infrastructure. Homes too, many for students. A hub for science start-ups will feature – vital this, since earlier ambitions to attract multinationals look premature. And Newcastle University's Institute for Research into Sustainability will be progressing transport and marine sciences there commercially. Newcastle Science Company chaired by Paul Walker – who gave Newcastle global status in software when heading Sage plc - already works on three objectives: Ensuring the words “Newcastle” and “excellence”

always go together on matters of ageing and health, stem cell and regenerative medicine, and sustainability, maximising science-based businesses and inward investment, and drawing locals, especially young people, into scientific achievements. Good news: bright young entrepreneurs are already being encouraged there. The start also on a £200m Stephenson Quarter marks Newcastle’s first mixed-use development for three years: 300,000sq ft of offices, apartments and two hotels, reviving 10 acres beside elegant offices and railway-arch shops already introduced. And Stephenson? Think George and Robert who, from 1823, ran the world’s first locomotive factory here now an events venue. Elsewhere... “High spec with soul” – alongside that description the name Toffee Factory sounds an oxymoron. Yet the factory, rebuilt from near-total detritus to a clean, colourful brick and glass exterior, emblematic of Ouseburn Valley’s new-era business, provides now 24 excitingly furnished and serviced

offices suited to creative media - with waterside views, rooftop terrace and courtyard, apple and fig trees, low carbon biomass heating, performance spaces too. You can sail through work there, using mooring posts to arrive and depart by boat. An iconic chimney tower survives – now sootless. Duncan McEwan, of Hedley McEwan group officed there, speaks for many: “We love working in a regenerated building with so much history springing back to life.” Ouseburn: home now also to the UK’s first book museum for children. Home to artists and creative jewellers. An urban village where 300 small firms and 2,000 lucky blighters work alongside a farm, stables, galleries, a cinema, studios, music venues and good pubs. Unrecognisable from the Ouseburn once a grimy, noisy waterfront cradle of Newcastle’s industrial revolution. Even toffee making must have been sheer relief from the iron, lead and chemical works then. That sad old seaside lady Whitley Bay and her neighbour Tynemouth are recovering from their decades-long desertion by holidaymakers who

discovered the Mediterranean. Whitley’s famous Spanish Dome, a Grade II Listed building, is being restored and redeployed in a £60m seaside resuscitation. So rich is this building in funfair and ballroom memories, epitomised by Dire Straits’ anthem Tunnel of Love, that thousands queued recently to visit an exhibition there of photographic nostalgia - from the 1912 opening to 1990s closure. Tynemouth Station, 130 years old and also threatened with demolition in 1986, is also a lively beauty again, not just a Metro stop, thanks to 30 years’ campaigning by local resident Ylana First and other Friends. Its glazed canopies, spandrel brackets and other ornamental wrought and cast iron, and wide, gently curving platforms have never looked lovelier. One of the nation’s top 5% of buildings architecturally (Grade II* listed rating), it’s now a station cum visitor attraction with markets, book fairs, art shows and other events. Nearby, Tynemouth’s derelict lido may also be revived. Opened in 1925, it attracted besides swimmers thousands of spectators for its Miss Tynemouth and bonny baby contests, again until the mid-‘90s. North Tyneside Council’s getting public stick about some alternative uses proposed for the Dome and the lido. Surely the Dome would make an ideal audio-visual visitor centre, recounting not only its ballroom and funfair era but also the entire North Tyne seaboard’s near-3,000 years of rich history and culture. Penrith has its Rheged, Largs in Ayrshire its Vikingar! experience – attractions both, whatever the weather. And 7,000 petitioners want Tynemouth’s lido an outdoor pool once more – “safer than the sea for children”. One local journalist remembers being agog in the 1960s when Tynemouth’s entertainments officer then, Tony Reay, championed the pool because Tynemouth got more sunshine than any other seaside resort in the country, and he had figures proving it! Now if only they could bring that sunshine back as well...

Ylanacallstheshots It was at a philosophical meeting in the Lake District, of all places, that Ylana First initially learned by chance her local Tynemouth station might disappear. It was destined for Beamish Museum - to be a mere rebuilt exhibit, replaced by a modern Metro halt. The idea appalled. This was late 1970s. Ylana, now 79, launched a campaign using all means possible to have it restored and retained. A photo exhibition of its past glory alerted townspeople to impending loss. A flea market at the station won 5,000 more defenders. With 150 Friends of the station Ylana ran book fairs, art displays and other entertainments to raise money meriting match funding. By 1981 she had political backing locally. Support came also from her Euro MP, The Guardian and Today on the radio. Community Service Volunteers came aboard, English Heritage too. She wrote a paper, made a CD. In 2007 she received an MBE. But only in 2009 did sufficient public funding guarantee victory. A development company took it up. Ylana finally triumphed. "Never lose hope in something like this," she advises. "Democratic process works slowly sometimes. But I'm very pleased at what has been achieved."

Dennhofer was established in 1972 in Newcastle’s Bath Lane, before its premises were knocked down to make way for the St James’ Boulevard revamp. So, already living in Stocksfield, Heinz decided to move lock, stock and bottle to the village in 2000, where he now stocks around 400 wines. He too prefers to get samples to “taste in our own surroundings instead of being abroad where everything tastes better.” “We don’t want to buy something and get it home only to find it doesn’t suit the Northumbrian weather.” Heinz mainly supplies local restaurants, working with them to compliment their food menus. “But we’re happy for people to come in and ask for advice,” he says. “We’ll always make a suggestion. It’s lovely to go for spicy food when the weather turns

wintry, but people find it difficult to pair Asian food, Chinese or Indian, because of that spiciness. Richard Granger Wines While Alastair Stewart, who heads up Richard Granger wine merchants in Jesmond admits he fell into the business following a stint “flying jets in the air force,” he now has more than three decades’ of wine knowledge. And, while you may think the life of a wine merchant is all about flying to exotic locations for tasting trips, that could not be further from the truth. “We taste everything here in Newcastle because if it tastes good on a day like today,” says Alastair while a steady drizzle falls from grey Newcastle skies, “it’s going to be good. People go on holiday and think a wine’s the best thing since sliced bread, then get it home and think it’s awful. But it’s not the wine’s fault, they’ve been seduced by the sunshine.” But while Alastair is clearly qualified to offer advice, he says he only offers suggestions because “wine is very subjective. You should start with what you like.” Rather self-depreciatingly, given Alastair’s palate is obviously more sophisticated than most, he says: “It’s not rocket science. I’m a keen amateur cook and, without sounding too much like Heston Blumenthal, you have to understand the chemistry between the food and the wine, understand how

those elements react in your mouth. So, if you’ve got a crisp, clean, dry Sauvignon Blanc and you try to match that style with halibut cooked with a cream sauce, put the two together and it will curdle in your mouth and be most unpleasant. If you stick with the sauce, that means going for a fatter wine. You also have to think about texture. If you’re having butternut squash soup, with a very velvety flavour, a lot of white wines would work but not be textured enough. You need to go for grape varieties like Pinot Gris or Viognier which have lovely aromatics and a slightly oily quality. “I have stylistic favourites. Carruthers and kent

Food matching is a passion for the two women behind Carruthers and Kent – Claire Carruthers and Mo O’Toole – who deal with everything from customers popping in to their Gosforth shop to ask what would go with their Thai curry, steak or spaghetti vongole to clients who want a wine selection for a party. “One of the Friday night off the cuff’s was a guy who came in and asked what he could put together with a Japanese banquet,” says Mo, adding: “Gewürztraminer is a good bet.” Devoted to stocking boutique winemakers, Carruthers and Kent regularly hosts food and wine events. On St George’s Day, they paired up with The Feathers Inn, serving delights including wild rabbit pie teamed with Cantina Mesa Buio Carignano del Sulcis. A meze night with food blogger Anna Hedworth has led to Mo and Claire discovering a new favourite – the Chateau Ka Source Blanche 2011 from Lebanon. “It’s a polished blend of Sauvignon Blanc, Viogner, Chardonnay and Muscat,” says Mo, “with hints of exotic fruit and honey.” As the weather turns colder and we long for more comforting food, Mo and Claire are brimming with suggestions. Campbells Bobbie Burns Durif 2009 from Australia will be the perfect pairing with game and lamb with its aniseed flavours and woodiness. For beef stews and red pasta dishes, Mo describes the Piano del Cerro as “the best we’ve tasted in southern Italian

wines”. Another one for meaty dishes, or hard English cheeses, is the Domaine Cap Martin Vieilles Vignes 2009, which Mo says is a “big, big wine”. s most of us know, St Oswald’s Hospice has been providing specialist care for North East adults and children for over 25 years. What we may not know is that an astonishing 70% of the £9.5 million per year needed to fund the Hospice’s work comes from voluntary donations and an increasingly popular way to help raise this money is to start a Tribute Fund. These funds are not separate charities, they are ways for an individual or group to work with St Oswald’s to raise money and commemorate a loved one. Most Tribute Funds are named after a particular person and established for a set period of time or to raise a specific amount. “Tribute Funds are a vital part of our work in more ways than one,” explains Director of Fundraising Anita Ball. “Apart from the money they generate, these funds are an invaluable way of helping people come to terms with the loss of someone close as it allows their fund raising to become very personal to themselves, their family and their friends.” For some time the Fundraising Team at St Oswald’s had been looking for a way to acknowledge the importance of such funds and it was a visit to Scotland that gave Anita and her colleagues the idea for the Tribute Tree. “Glasgow’s Prince & Princess of Wales Hospice has a sculpture of a tree in their lobby and those who have started a fund can, if they wish, add a leaf to this tree,” says Anita, “When their fund has achieved its purpose, the donor is presented with their leaf as a memento. It

was such a positive way of marking the achievements of hardworking fundraisers we thought St Oswald’s could benefit from a similar tree.” The idea was raised at an appeal committee meeting and Duncan Young, of Gosforth based estate agents and property consultants Sanderson Young, was keen to support the idea. After much searching, local artist Andy McDermott, of Ouseburn’s Test House 5 artists’ group, was chosen to create the St Oswald’s Tree. “We looked at a lot of designs and a lot of artists,” says Anita, “But Andy’s vision was the one that most closely matched ours.” Andy’s tree is certainly extraordinary. Four steel rods support a lattice of branches to which a maximum of sixty detachable leaves can be fixed. Like a real tree, it sways gently in the breeze and casts a very natural shadow. If you look closely, you can also see that the artist has used the spaces between the branches to form the pattern of a flower. The commemorative leaves will be made of copper and will gradually turn green as they become coated with a natural patina of verdigris. Each leaf will be engraved with the name of the fund to be acknowledged but you can’t ‘buy’ a leaf by itself. The only way to add a leaf to this tree is through establishing a Tribute Fund. “It really is a beautiful piece of art,” says Anita. “It can be seen from the inpatient unit and the chapel and we hope those who work so hard on behalf of the Hospice will agree it is a wonderful addition to our lovely Cloister Garden.”
