We don’t impose that much. What we impose is within the context of what goes on in the world, and the changes that result are usually small. Design is very affirmative in that way. We’re affirming other people’s ideas, affirming other people’s messages and combining them with our own. I don’t see our roleas forcing a change in communication. Communication is always in flux. And information has a life of its own. Mr Keedy. The typeface doesn’t really matter, as long as the text is good. John Maeda. A mystery is the most stimulating force in unleashing the imagination. In graphic design, there is no alternative to modernism. To predate modernism, is to be a commercial artist, printer or scribe, not a designer, because the designer was born out of modernism. To post-date modernism is equally incomprehensible for most designers, because it exists outside their realm of comprehension. Mr Keedy. As processes, as acts that open the door to meaning, design is writing and writing is design. As professions, their areas of expertise are separate but connected ; typography is the intersection at which they meet. Anne Burdick. The thing that’s so wonderful about using beautiful, appropriate tools is that they become an extension of you, your body, you fingertips, and your mind. Everyone’s tried to remove a screw without a screwdriver; a task quickly becomes impossible that otherwise would be trivial. Luke Crawford. The life of a designer is a life of fight: fight against the ugliness. Massimo Vignelli. Drawing is speaking to the eye; talking is painting to the ear. Joseph Joubert. Design is the search for a magical balance between business and art; art and craft; intuition and reason; concept and detail; playfulness and formality; client and designer; designer and printer; and printer and public. Valerie Pettis. Many desperate acts of design (including gradients, drop shadows, and the gratuitous use of transparency) are perpetuated in the absence of a strong concept. A good idea provides a framework for design decisions, guiding the work. Ellen Lupton. Stop looking at yourself as a designer, and start thinking of yourself as a deliverer of ideas. Ståle Melvær. Designers must be stewards of design rather than dictators. Cassie McDaniel. Curiosity about life in all of its aspects, I think, is still the secret of great creative people. Leo Burnett. People with tiny glasses and costly shoes can always find a couple of hours to explain how you did it all wrong. Merlin Mann. The enemy of art is the absence of limitations. Orson Welles. To attempt mastery of everything inevitably makes us mediocre in many areas. Simon Collison. Influence is borrowed, inspiration is earned. Create opportunities to earn it, and have a plan to capture it. Cameron Moll. I’m sure there are fine artists out there who keep the audience in mind when they work. But it’s not the accepted trajectory of the profession. Conversely, it’s very clear in design that what we do needs to be seen an understood by an audience. Stefan Sagmeister. The simplest way to achieve simplicity is through thoughtful reduction. John Maeda. The process is really just Iterate, Iterate, Iterate. Chris Clarke. Just because something looks good doesn’t mean its useful. And just because something is useful does not make it beautiful. Joshua Brewer. Rules can be broken — but never ignored. David Jury. Solving any problem is more important than being right. Milton Glaser. I find modernist design boring, but it so much faster! Christine Suewon Lee. Your best work is your expression of yourself. Now, you may not be the greatest at it, but when you do it, you’re the only expert. Frank Gehry. Being good in business is the most fascinating kind of art. Making money is art and working is art and good business is the best art. Andy Warhol. Luck is the residue of design. Branch Rickey.
