“While he’s a solid team player and a pleasure to work with, he’s also an excellent designer and critical thinker. He has been able to contribute to our design discussions and bring his own, well considered ideas, to them. I can point to numerous instances where before, during, and after our discussions, Miguel was able to advance concepts in ways that were unique and added significant value. “ Tom Sutherland

This rural hospital makes use of folding roofs in order to improve day lighting to the interiors and make patients’ stay more pleasant. The folding roofs also serve to minimize the necessary presence of the mechanical penthouse. Taking advantage of the sloped site the south side, the hospital has a louver protected glass facade that allows program to spill out onto a rear courtyard. Highly involved in design development phase using physical models, computer modelling, and sketching. Preparation of presentation materials for clients.

Extreme Site - 1B Design Studio - Don Mckay Subject to sudden changes in water levels, the Armadillo Boat House is a modularly constructed building that is adept to its remote site. Its unique look is derived from a series of shuttershades that occupants can adjust manually for increased comfort. The structure can be partially constructed offsite and completed on ‘site’.

A NEW LIFE

Visions of Settlement - 1B Design Studio - Don Mckay In response to the Haitian earthquake the project brief called for a home that could be inexpensively constructed. The design not only accomplished this but sought to increase the quality of life of the Haitian people as well as grant each family some independence by way of being a productive organism. The house is designed for the main floor to have maximum versatility, perhaps doubling as a shop. The second storey is much more private and retreated; it is covered by vine trellises serving as environmental buffers as well as productive systems.

WATER STREET HOTEL

Urban Hotel - 2A Design Studio - Ryszard Sliwka This Spa/Hotel project is made up of a light glass and steel Hotel tower and an underground spa. The Hotel is comprised of two twisting elements meeting at the top creating a place of passage for chance encounters between visitors while the underground spa serves as a passage into self rediscovery and return to nature. The buried spa allows for the creation of a new urban space above it within the context of Cambridge, Ontario.

PORTLAND URBAN ZOO

Zoo - 2B Design Studio - Lola Sheppard This zoo project was based on the idea of humankinds temporality on any given site, and the idea of our creations appearing and then disappearing. Located in the old Toronto Portlands, the Portland Urban Zoo seeks to subtly undo the results of the sites industrial history and shift the focus of visitors away from captive animals. By making cuts in the asphalt arranged in a grid, the framework for a natural overgrowth is set up in the surrounding landscape. While the zoo for camouflaged animals is housed in a psuedo-warehouse filled with suspended glass boxes throughout. The human and animal programs become indistinguishable to the visitors, and due to the unlikelihood of catching a glimpse of the masters of disguise, the focus is shifted onto self and other visitors. The Zoo, in essence, discreetly appears on the industrial site and eventually, like its inhabitants and landscape, disappears and disintegrates.

In a collaborative effort by the class of 2014, a play based on the story of the fall of Troy was produced. A significant part of the story was the ‘construction’ of the Trojan Horse. At the climax of the production the small audience was suddenly surrounded by the tall wooden ‘ribs’, representing the Horse, that are used to hoist up a fabric enclosure putting the audience in the Trojan Horse and making them participants in the breach of the great walls of the city.
