Keeping Summer Fun Our kid-friendly guide for a summer to remember BY JENNIFER HERRERA

Pearsall Park This 500-plus acre South Side gem is the perfect place to escape to for summer fun. Families can enjoy an adventure course, disc golf, a skate park and children’s playground. 4838 Old Pearsall Road, sanantonio.gov/parksandrec

San Antonio Botanical Garden The San Antonio Botanical Garden is offering in-person and virtual camp experiences starting June 29. Campers ages 6 to 12 can choose from a variety of art and nature-themed camps or hands-on healthy cooking instruction offered through a partnership with the Witte Museum. 555 Funston Place, sabot.org

Hardberger Park With the recent opening of the Land Bridge Trail, which blurs the line between nature and people like never before, Hardberger Park is a great addition to anyone’s summer itinerary. Plan ahead by visiting the park’s website to download its art walk map, which points visitors to four public art installations—including Picture Your World, which displays photos from young students who received instruction from professional photographers in the park. For an interactive activity, take advantage of the park’s Grab-N-Go Nature Kits, available every second Saturday of the month. Upcoming summer kit themes include wild things, bear’s lunch, water and bees. Hardberger Park (East Entrance), 13203 Blanco Road; Hardberger Park (West Entrance) & Urban Ecology Center, 8400 N.W. Brackenridge Park When a park has been open over 100 years, it becomes more than just a place—it rises to a tradition and part of the many family narratives that make up San Antonio. It’s almost a requirement for a San Antonio summer to include some good family time in Brackenridge Park. Fortunately, there are few places with more to offer. One suggestion: Enjoy a midday picnic followed by a short stroll, and cap the day off with a ride on the San Antonio Zoo Eagle Train. Then pat yourself on the back for becoming part of San Antonio history. 3700 N. St. Mary’s St., brackenridgepark.org

San Antonio Zoo A change of environment and perspective has always been a big benefit of summer. The San Antonio Zoo makes that easy with a menu of summer camps for kindergarten through fifth grade kids, focusing on topics like A Place to Call Home, which teaches kids about how and where animals make their homes. Other fun offerings include ZSI: Zoo Science Investigator, and Camp Zoorassic, an imaginative journey back to dinosaur days. 3903 N. St. Mary’s St., sazoo.org

4 CAMPS TO CONSIDER

The DoSeum From June 7 through the week of Aug. 9, The DoSeum offers a packed schedule of camp activities for children ages 3 to 11. With topics from

anime to technology, the DoSeum will remind your kid why learning in-person is so much fun. 2800 Broadway, thedoseum.org

Cibolo Center for Conservation The Cibolo Nature Center may have changed its name to Cibolo Center for Conservation, but its mission to educate the public about the beauty and necessity of the natural world remains. Part of that mission is aimed at kids, and the center offers eight weeks of summer camps starting June 7. “We will have nature camps in the morning, art camps in the afternoon and specially tailored camps for teens, called Trailblazer Camp,” says vice president of development, Leigh Owen. Trailblazer Camp not only exposes teens to local birds and critters, it also provides a short course on land management and shows how wildlands coexist with the center’s Herff Farm. 140 City Park Road, cibolo.org
